I Want to Make a ₹799 Premium Candle — How Much Can I Reasonably Spend on Fragrance Oil and Packaging While Maintaining My Target Gross Margin?
Aktie
Which CSI oils fit a ₹60 box at ₹799? At 1 kg prices, Citrus Lemon, British Rose and Eucalyptus Spearmint fit. Woody Oud, Sandalwood and Lavender need a cheaper box or a lower margin.
Does Dark Vanilla fit a ₹799 candle? Not at 8% in this build with a 65% margin. 16 g costs ₹122.34, which is ₹12.75 over the shared pot before any packaging.
What does an extra 1% of load cost? On a 200 g candle, about ₹9.43 with Lavender and ₹14.28 with Dark Vanilla, because 2 g of oil replaces 2 g of CSI 464.
Fragrance and packaging share one pot of money
A premium candle at ₹799 has two costs that the customer notices straight away: what it smells like and what it arrives in. Everything else, the wax, the wick, the glass, is either invisible or quickly taken for granted. So the useful way to plan a ₹799 candle is to lock the boring parts first, work out what is left under your margin target, and then decide how that remainder is shared between fragrance oil and packaging.
How GST is handled here: the ₹799 in every calculation below is the net amount per candle after GST is removed. A GST-inclusive ₹799 would leave you less, so if that is your situation, strip out your applicable rate before using these numbers. All CSI material prices are as listed on the store in October 2026.
The fixed part of the candle
The example product is a 200 g candle in the matte 200 ml glass jar, poured in Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 with an Eco C1 wick, at an 8% fragrance load measured against total candle weight. That gives 184 g of wax and 16 g of oil. The fixed costs are wax 184 g × ₹0.5074 = ₹93.36, jar ₹70.80 and wick ₹5.90, a total of ₹170.06 before any fragrance.
The ceiling
Assume a target gross margin of 65%. That figure is the reader's own example, chosen because premium candles usually need more headroom than a ₹499 line. The total allowable cost per candle is ₹799 × 0.35 = ₹279.65. Subtract the fixed ₹170.06 and you have ₹109.59 to divide between fragrance oil and packaging.
How much packaging each oil leaves you
The table prices 16 g of each oil at its 1 kg rate and shows the packaging allowance that remains inside the ₹109.59 pot. It is the fastest way to see which oils suit a ₹799 product with a gift box and which only work with simpler packaging.
| Fragrance oil (1 kg price) | 16 g costs | Packaging allowance left | Fits a ₹60 box? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Citrus Lemon (₹2,832.00) | ₹45.31 | ₹109.59 − ₹45.31 = ₹64.28 | Yes |
| British Rose (₹3,068.00) | ₹49.09 | ₹60.50 | Yes, just |
| Jasmine (₹3,923.00) | ₹62.77 | ₹46.82 | No |
| Woody Oud (₹4,531.20) | ₹72.50 | ₹37.09 | No |
| Sandalwood (₹5,026.80) | ₹80.43 | ₹29.16 | No |
| Lavender (₹5,221.00) | ₹83.54 | ₹26.05 | No |
| Dark Vanilla (₹7,646.00) | ₹122.34 | ₹109.59 − ₹122.34 = −₹12.75 | No, over the ceiling before packaging |
A ₹60 packaging quote, which is again your figure, means the oil can cost no more than ₹109.59 − ₹60 = ₹49.59 for 16 g. Divide by 16 and the oil must cost ₹3.10 per gram or less (₹49.59 ÷ 16 = ₹3.0994), which is roughly ₹3,099 per kg. Only Citrus Lemon, British Rose and Eucalyptus Spearmint (₹3,068.00 per kg) sit under that line among the oils in this table.
That is not an argument for lemon-and-rose-only premium candles. It is a signal that a ₹799 candle with a rich gift box and a woody or gourmand oil is a margin conflict, and you have to choose which one carries the premium.
Three ways to resolve the conflict
Option 1: spend on the oil, keep packaging simple
If the scent is the product, give it the money. Woody Oud at 8% leaves ₹37.09 for packaging. A sturdy sleeve and label may fit inside that; a rigid box with an insert probably will not. The customer smells the oil every time they light the candle and sees the box once.
Option 2: spend on packaging, choose a lower-cost oil
If your channel is gifting, the unboxing may genuinely matter more. Then choose an oil from the top of the table and test it hard so it still performs. British Rose states up to 10% in soy, has 0% vanillin and a flashpoint of 192°C; Citrus Lemon's page suggests the upper end of its range because citrus top notes fade faster than warmer families.
Option 3: change the load, not the oil
Each extra percentage point of load on a 200 g candle swaps 2 g of wax for 2 g of oil. With Lavender that adds 2 × (₹5.221 − ₹0.5074) = ₹9.43 per point; with Dark Vanilla it adds 2 × (₹7.646 − ₹0.5074) = ₹14.28. Going the other way, from 8% to 7%, gives those amounts back. Use this only if burn tests show the lower load still throws well enough, because a weaker candle is a poor trade for a nicer box.
Test the shortlist before you commit
Once you have picked a direction, test two or three oils from the right part of the table in the same jar, wax and wick, so the only variable is the fragrance. Four candles per oil is a suggested starting point: two for burn tests, two kept back for cold-throw checks.
Buy this to test, then buy this once validated
The test list assumes three oils from the table: British Rose for a gifting build, Woody Oud for a scent-led build and Citrus Lemon as a low-cost reference. The production list assumes British Rose won and you are making 100 candles.
| Stage | Item | Pack | Price | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Test | CSI 464 | 1 kg | ₹507.40 | 12 candles × 184 g = 2,208 g, so buy three 1 kg packs (₹1,522.20) |
| Test | British Rose | 100 g | ₹342.20 | 4 × 16 g = 64 g |
| Test | Woody Oud | 100 g | ₹453.12 | Same price per gram as its 1 kg pack |
| Test | Citrus Lemon | 100 g | ₹300.00 | Reference oil |
| Test | Matte 200 ml jars | Pack of 10 + pack of 5 | ₹1,062.00 | ₹708.00 + ₹354.00 for 15 jars |
| Test | Eco C1 wicks | 20 | ₹118.00 | Plus Eco C2 10-pack at ₹94.40 |
| Production | CSI 464 | 10 kg + 5 kg + 4 × 1 kg | ₹9,640.60 | 100 × 184 g = 18.4 kg; ₹5,074.00 + ₹2,537.00 + ₹2,029.60 for 19 kg |
| Production | British Rose | 1 kg + 500 g + 100 g | ₹5,003.20 | 100 × 16 g = 1,600 g; ₹3,068.00 + ₹1,593.00 + ₹342.20 |
| Production | Matte 200 ml jars | 10 × pack of 10 | ₹7,080.00 | ₹70.80 each |
| Production | Eco C1 wicks | 100 | ₹590.00 | Or Eco C2 at ₹944.00 if it won |
Test spend: ₹1,522.20 + ₹342.20 + ₹453.12 + ₹300.00 + ₹1,062.00 + ₹118.00 + ₹94.40 = ₹3,891.92. The 100-unit production order comes to ₹22,313.80 (₹9,640.60 + ₹5,003.20 + ₹7,080.00 + ₹590.00), or about ₹223.14 per candle in materials, before packaging. Because CSI 464 costs the same per kg at every pack, you can split that 19 kg across whatever bag sizes are easiest to store.
Keep the decision honest. If every test candle smells better with Woody Oud and customers in your channel do not care about the box, take Option 1 and stop paying for packaging nobody keeps.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general candle-making practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly where CSI publishes no figure (wick sizes, burn times, hardness), and labels every wick, load, test count or margin as a starting point for your own validation.
Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. Where a spec is not published — such as a wick size for your jar, a mould's cycle life or a wax's survival temperature — this guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Assumptions: Fragrance load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g = 184 g wax + 16 g oil at 8%); CSI wax pages phrase their ceilings as a share of wax weight. Material cost per candle covers wax, oil, vessel, wick and dye only — it excludes packaging, labels, labour, shipping and GST. CSI publishes no wick sizing chart, burn times or wax survival temperatures, so every wick named is a candidate to test. Retail prices, budgets, margins and packaging costs are the reader's own figures. Test counts and loads are suggested starting points.
