Strong fragrance · citrus
Every lemon smells bright in the first ten minutes. The oil worth buying is the one still recognisable as lemon at the two-hour mark.
2 hours
the burn point at which each citrus oil is judged
Quick answers — read this first
Why does lemon fade during a burn? Citrus top notes are volatile. CSI's Citrus Lemon page says so itself and advises a full 48–72 h cure and the upper end of the load range.

Which CSI citrus oils should I compare? Citrus Lemon (lemon, lime, grapefruit, orange, mandarin), Zesty Lemon (lemon top, floral citrus heart, clean musk base) and Lemongrass and Lime (citrus over cedarwood and soft musk).

What load should I test? 9% of total candle weight as a suggested starting point: 18 g of oil and 182 g of wax in a 200 g candle, inside each oil's stated range.

What makes a lemon last? Often the base. An oil with musk or cedar underneath can stay recognisable after the brightest notes thin out. Test it rather than assume.
The short answer
Test design: Three citrus oils at 9% in CSI 464, each with Eco C1 and Eco C2: six candles.
Judging: Score brightness and 'still lemon' at 15, 60 and 120 minutes in the same room.
Oil cost per candle: Citrus Lemon ₹50.98, Zesty Lemon ₹61.20, Lemongrass and Lime ₹93.60 at 18 g.
Oil cost per 200 g candle at 9% (18 g)Citrus Lemon₹51Zesty Lemon₹61Lemongrass and Lime₹94
The most expensive oil is not automatically the one that lasts longest; the two-hour log decides.
Straight answer
I Want to Make a Lemon Candle That Still Smells Bright After Burning for Two Hours — What Should I Test When Selecting a Citrus Fragrance Oil?
Test for the two-hour mark, not the first sniff. Pour three CSI citrus oils, Citrus Lemon, Zesty Lemon and Lemongrass and Lime, at the same load, for example 9% of a 200 g candle (18 g oil, 182 g wax), in CSI 464 with Eco C1 and Eco C2. Cure the full 48–72 h the pages state. Then burn each in the same room and score brightness and whether it still reads as lemon at 15, 60 and 120 minutes. A lemon with a supporting base, such as Zesty Lemon's clean musk or Lemongrass and Lime's cedarwood, may hold its shape longer than a purely bright one. Buy the oil that wins at two hours.
One line: compare three citrus oils at one load and judge them at the two-hour mark, because staying power is the property you are buying.
Zesty Lemon pairs a lemon top with a floral citrus heart and a clean musk base; its page says start at 8% and assess after a 72 h cure.

Why lemon is bright at lighting and thin by hour two

A lemon candle is judged not when it is lit but when someone notices, an hour later, that the room still smells of lemon.

Citrus character lives largely in light, fast-moving top materials. CSI's own Citrus Lemon page says it directly: citrus top notes are volatile and fade faster than warmer families, so cure the full 48–72 h and use the upper end of the range. That is honest guidance, and it shapes this test. You are not asking which oil smells best from the bottle. You are asking which one still reads as lemon after two hours of burning.

Structure helps. When the bright top thins, what remains is the heart and base. An oil with something underneath to carry the citrus impression, a clean musk or a soft cedar, may keep the room recognisably lemon for longer than one built almost entirely from top notes. That is a general pattern, not a promise, so it is the hypothesis you test.

The three CSI citrus oils to compare

Candidates
What each page lists
Oil Notes Page guidance 50 g / 1 kg
Citrus Lemon Lemon, lime; grapefruit, orange; mandarin base Vanillin about 0%; soy 6–10%, paraffin 6–8%; use the upper end ₹170.00 / ₹2,832.00
Zesty Lemon Lemon top; soft floral citrus heart; subtle clean musk base 0% vanillin; up to 10% soy, start at 8%, assess after 72 h ₹200.00 / ₹3,400.00
Lemongrass and Lime Citrus with cedarwood and soft musk base Rated moderate on its page; stated load 6–10% ₹330.00 / ₹5,200.00

Each one has a different base. Citrus Lemon stays in the citrus family down to mandarin. Zesty Lemon adds a clean musk. Lemongrass and Lime moves to a herbal citrus with cedar beneath. The moderate rating on Lemongrass and Lime is the product page's own description, not a measurement; it may still perform well at two hours, which is why it belongs in the test.

Why Juicy Orange is not in this test

CSI's Juicy Orange is a bright citrus with a light musk and amber base, and its page states soy 8–10% and a low discolouration risk. It is an orange, not a lemon, so it does not answer this brief on its own. If your lemon candle ends up feeling one-dimensional, though, it is a reasonable candidate for a later blending round to add juiciness, tested at the same total load.

Low colour risk
All three are citrus oils with little or no vanillin listed, so yellowing is a smaller worry than with gourmand oils. You can judge the white wax for colour as a secondary note, not the main concern.

The six-candle two-hour test

Keep every variable fixed except oil and wick. A 200 g candle at 9% is 200 × 0.09 = 18 g of oil and 182 g of wax, inside every candidate's stated soy range. Nine percent is a suggested starting point near the upper end, following the Citrus Lemon page's advice.

Test matrix
CSI 464, matte 200 ml jar
Candle Oil Load Oil Wax Wick
1 Citrus Lemon 9% 18 g 182 g Eco C1
2 Citrus Lemon 9% 18 g 182 g Eco C2
3 Zesty Lemon 9% 18 g 182 g Eco C1
4 Zesty Lemon 9% 18 g 182 g Eco C2
5 Lemongrass and Lime 9% 18 g 182 g Eco C1
6 Lemongrass and Lime 9% 18 g 182 g Eco C2

None of the three pages publishes a flashpoint, so add each oil to cooled wax at a moderate temperature and never with the melter at full heat. Pour all six on the same day, label each base, and cure for the full 48–72 h. Zesty Lemon's page suggests assessing after 72 h, so treat 72 h as the earliest burn and repeat the log around day 7 as a suggested starting point.

The two-hour log sheet

Burn one candle per session in the same room, door closed, and let the room air out between sessions. At each checkpoint, step outside for a minute and come back in.

Log sheet
Score each checkpoint 1–5 (a suggested scale)
Checkpoint Brightness Still reads as lemon? Pool width Flame and soot
15 min
60 min
120 min

The second column is the one that matters. A candle can still smell of something at two hours while no longer smelling of lemon; it may have drifted into generic sweetness or plain musk. Write the word you would use, not just a number. Smell a clean strip of the neat oil before each checkpoint if it helps you remember what 'lemon' meant at the start, and ask someone who has not been in the room all afternoon to score the 120-minute check, because your own nose adapts quickly to a scent it has been sitting in. Extinguish at the end of the session, and keep each step outside to a brief pause at the doorway so the candle is never left unattended.

All three fade by hour two. Check the pool first. If the C1 candles left a narrow pool, compare their C2 sisters. If the pools were full, try the winner at 10%, the top of its stated range, before giving up on the oil.
One oil lasts but smells woody, not lemony. That may be Lemongrass and Lime's cedar base showing. Decide whether your product is a lemon candle or a citrus-herbal one, and name it honestly.

Cost per candle for each citrus option

Oil per gram from the 1 kg packs: Citrus Lemon ₹2.832, Zesty Lemon ₹3.40, Lemongrass and Lime ₹5.20. Wax 182 g of CSI 464 at ₹0.5074 per gram is ₹92.35; the matte jar is ₹70.80 and Eco C1 is ₹5.90.

Cost per candle
200 g at 9%, Eco C1
Line Citrus Lemon Zesty Lemon Lemongrass and Lime
Oil 18 g ₹50.98 ₹61.20 ₹93.60
Wax 182 g ₹92.35 ₹92.35 ₹92.35
Jar ₹70.80 ₹70.80 ₹70.80
Wick ₹5.90 ₹5.90 ₹5.90
Total ₹220.03 ₹230.25 ₹262.65

The spread between cheapest and dearest is ₹42.62 per candle. If Citrus Lemon holds up at two hours, it is the obvious buy. If only Zesty Lemon does, the extra ₹10.22 per candle is small for a lemon that still smells of lemon.

If no single oil wins outright, a blend may. Suppose Zesty Lemon is bright but thin by hour two and Lemongrass and Lime holds on but smells too herbal. A 70:30 blend at 9% puts 18 × 0.70 = 12.6 g of Zesty Lemon and 18 × 0.30 = 5.4 g of Lemongrass and Lime in each candle. The oil then costs 12.6 × ₹3.40 = ₹42.84 plus 5.4 × ₹5.20 = ₹28.08, a total of ₹70.92, which sits between the two single-oil options. Treat the ratio as a suggested starting point and run it through the same two-hour log. Mix it as one master blend for the batch, so the share of each oil stays fixed from the first jar to the last. Your packaging, labels, labour, shipping and GST come on top.

Buy this to test, buy this once validated

To test: 50 g each of Citrus Lemon ₹170.00, Zesty Lemon ₹200.00 and Lemongrass and Lime ₹330.00 (each candle pair uses 36 g). Six candles need 6 × 182 g = 1,092 g of wax, so CSI 464 1 kg ₹507.40 plus 500 g ₹260.00. Add a pack of ten matte 200 ml jars ₹708.00, Eco C1 20 wicks ₹118.00 and Eco C2 10 wicks ₹94.40. The full test set is ₹2,387.80.

Once validated: 50 candles at 9% need 50 × 18 g = 900 g of the winning oil, which is a single 1 kg pack, and 50 × 182 g = 9,100 g of wax, which is a 10 kg CSI 464 pack at ₹5,074.00. If Zesty Lemon wins and you want a coconut-soy version, run one more round in CSI 468; its page states up to 10% in coconut, so the 9% load still fits.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general candle-making practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly where CSI publishes no figure (wick sizes, burn times, hardness), and labels every wick, load, test count or margin as a starting point for your own validation.

Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. Where a spec is not published — such as a wick size for your jar, a mould's cycle life or a wax's survival temperature — this guide says so rather than filling the gap.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my lemon candle lose its scent while burning?
Citrus top notes are volatile and fade faster than warmer families, as CSI's Citrus Lemon page states. A full cure, the upper end of the load range and an oil with a supporting base can help; test them in your candle.
What is the best lemon fragrance oil for candles?
There is no universal answer. Compare Citrus Lemon, Zesty Lemon and Lemongrass and Lime from CSI at the same load and judge which still reads as lemon after two hours of burning.
What fragrance load should a citrus candle use?
Citrus Lemon's page advises the upper end of its 6–10% soy range. As a suggested starting point, test 9% of total candle weight, which is 18 g in a 200 g candle.
How long should a lemon candle cure?
The pages state 48–72 h, and Zesty Lemon's suggests assessing after 72 h. Burn your first test after 72 h and a sister candle around day 7 as a suggested starting point, then compare the two logs.
Do lemon fragrance oils discolour white soy wax?
Citrus Lemon lists vanillin at about 0% and Zesty Lemon at 0%, so colour change is a smaller concern than with vanilla oils. Still note the colour of each test candle.
How much does a 200 g lemon candle cost to make?
At 9% in CSI 464 with a matte 200 ml jar and Eco C1, materials cost ₹220.03 with Citrus Lemon, ₹230.25 with Zesty Lemon and ₹262.65 with Lemongrass and Lime, before packaging and other costs.
