I Want to Reduce Fragrance Cost Without Making My Candles Smell Weaker — Should I First Optimise Dosage, Wax Compatibility, Wick Performance or Fragrance Selection?
Aktie
How much does cutting load from 10% to 8% save? On a 200 g Vanilla Bean candle, 4 g of oil: ₹29.20 a candle at the 100 g rate after the extra wax, ₹8,761.20 a month at 300 candles. See dosage.
Is switching to a cheaper fragrance the best saving? It is the biggest single number (₹49.46 a candle, Vanilla Bean → Cinnamon Vanilla) and the riskiest, because it changes what the customer buys. Do it last, and only if a blind test says customers prefer or accept it.
Does buying 1 kg instead of 100 g help? A little, for free: ₹4.06 a candle for Vanilla Bean. For 24 oils in CSI's catalogue the kilo saves 5% or more; for most it is within 1%. See the free lever.
The order, and why
Four levers change fragrance cost per candle: how much oil you use, how well the wick releases it, what wax it sits in, and which oil it is. They are not equal. The first two are usually invisible to the customer when done properly. The third is invisible if it passes a retest, and expensive to get wrong. The fourth is by definition visible: it changes what the customer bought last time. So the order is set by risk to the product, not by the size of the saving.
| Order | Lever | Change modelled | Per candle | Per month | Risk to the product |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Dosage | 10% → 8% (20 g → 16 g oil) | −₹29.20 | −₹8,761.20 | Low, if a blind hot-throw test passes |
| 2 | Wick and pool | Thin C1 → Thick C2 to reach a full pool | +₹3.54 | +₹1,062.00 | Low; it is what lets lever 1 pass |
| — | Pack size | 100 g → 1 kg | −₹4.06 | −₹1,219.20 | None — same oil |
| 3 | Wax | Luxury Soy Wax Chunks → CSI 464 | −₹16.85 | −₹5,056.32 | Medium: full retest; CSI 464 rated up to 10% |
| 4 | Selection | Vanilla Bean → Cinnamon Vanilla | −₹49.46 | −₹14,837.76 | High: a different scent |
The first three levers and the pack size take the candle from ₹342.52 to ₹295.94 — ₹46.58 a candle, ₹13,974.72 a month — with the same fragrance. Material cost here is oil, wax, wick and jar only; labour, packaging, freight and GST are extra. The wick row is the one people skip because it adds cost. It is the reason lever 1 works. I'm Using 6% Fragrance Load but My Candle Smells Weak — Should I Immediately Increase It to 10% or Troubleshoot the Wick and Wax First? covers why a weak candle at 6% is usually a wick and wax problem before it is a load problem.
Lever 1: dosage
Load is the most direct lever, and the one most often set by habit or fear. A maker who once had a weak candle at 8% moves the whole range to 10% and never tests it again. At Vanilla Bean's 1 kg rate, each percentage point in a 200 g candle is 2 g of oil, ₹15.29. The table shows what each step is worth at 300 candles a month, before you consider whether the candle still performs.
| Load | Oil | Oil cost | Material cost per candle | Monthly saving vs 10% (300 candles) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10% | 20 g | ₹152.92 | ₹337.44 | ₹0.00 |
| 9% | 18 g | ₹137.63 | ₹323.35 | ₹4,228.20 |
| 8% | 16 g | ₹122.34 | ₹309.25 | ₹8,456.40 |
| 7% | 14 g | ₹107.04 | ₹295.16 | ₹12,684.60 |
| 6% | 12 g | ₹91.75 | ₹281.06 | ₹16,912.80 |
Two rules keep lever 1 honest. Test downward, blind, at matched cure age: pour the current load and one or two lower loads the same day, in the same wax and wick, and score them without knowing which is which. How Do I Compare the Performance of 6%, 8% and 10% Fragrance Loads Objectively Instead of Choosing Whichever Candle Smells Strongest to Me? sets out an objective comparison, and How Do I Find the Lowest Fragrance Load That Still Gives Strong Hot Throw so I'm Not Wasting Expensive Fragrance Oil? covers finding the lowest load that still throws well. And stay within the wax's ceiling in both directions of thinking: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated up to 13% and CSI 464 up to 10%. Those are the wax makers' stated maximums, not targets. I Reduced My Fragrance Load from 10% to 8% and the Candle Suddenly Burns Better — How Can Less Fragrance Sometimes Produce Better Overall Performance? explains how less oil can sometimes burn better.
Lever 2: wick and melt pool
Hot throw comes from the melt pool. If the wick is too small for the jar, the pool stays narrow, less fragranced wax is warm at any moment, and the candle seems weak. The instinctive fix is more oil. The right fix is usually the wick. In the example, moving from an Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 (₹5.90) to a Thick C2 (₹9.44) adds ₹3.54 a candle — and if that is what lets 8% pass, it pays for itself about 8.2 times over. We cannot tell you which wick your jar needs; wick size per jar diameter is not in our data. Burn-test it: the right wick gives a full pool within your normal burn time without soot or an oversized flame.
Lever 3: wax
Wax affects cost twice: directly, because it is most of the candle's weight, and indirectly, because some wax-and-oil pairings release fragrance better than others, which can let a lower load pass. Our data has no wax-compatibility measurements for individual oils, so the indirect effect can only be found by testing. The direct effect is simple arithmetic. Switching the 184 g of wax from Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (₹599.00/kg) to Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 (₹507.40/kg) saves ₹16.85 a candle. Natural Soy Pearl Wax at ₹450.00/kg would save ₹27.42 — but no fragrance ceiling for it is published in our data, so check the product page or ask on WhatsApp before testing it.
Lever 4: fragrance selection
Changing the oil is the biggest single saving on the page. Cinnamon Vanilla at ₹4.55 a gram instead of Vanilla Bean at ₹7.65 saves ₹49.46 per candle at 16 g. It is last because it is not a cost reduction on the same product. It is a new product at a lower cost. Customers who bought the Vanilla Bean candle will notice, and some of the repeat orders that made it worth costing will stop. One Fragrance Oil Costs More but Gives Stronger Hot Throw at a Lower Dosage — How Do I Compare Fragrance Oils by Cost per Finished Candle Rather than Price per Kilogram? covers comparing oils by cost per finished candle, and I'm Comparing a ₹2,000/kg Fragrance That Performs at 10% with a ₹4,000/kg Fragrance That Performs Strongly at 6% — Which One Actually Costs Less per Candle? works through a cheaper oil that needs a higher load.
The free lever: how you buy
Pack size is not a formulation lever, but it is the only one with no risk at all. Vanilla Bean costs ₹7.90 a gram at 100 g and ₹7.65 at 1 kg, a saving of ₹4.06 per 16 g candle. That is small, and typical: for 52 of 91 CSI oils the kilo is within 1% of the 100 g. For 24 oils the saving is 5% or more — Citronella 62.3%, Honeydew Melon 22.0%, Mango Coconut 20.7%, Verbena 20.0% among them — and for those the kilo is a real lever. The one step that is reliable across the catalogue is out of 15 g: a median 23.1% premium per gram over 100 g. Never produce from 15 g testers. Beyond the listed packs, volume pricing is quoted on WhatsApp and no discount figure is published.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. Two of the levers on this page reduce how much oil you buy from us, and the page puts them first because they are the ones your customers cannot smell. We publish no throw, dosage or wax-compatibility data for individual oils, so every lever is framed as a test, not a promise.
Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026; Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 and White Matte Glass Jar prices were verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026, with Thick C2 and cotton braided wick prices from the 25 September wick pull. Every per-candle and per-month figure (₹342.52 → ₹295.94, ₹13,974.72 a month) is plain arithmetic on those prices.
The 10% starting load, the 300-candle month and the Thick C2 wick change are illustrative; whether 8% and a larger wick pass for your candle is decided only by your own blind test. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated up to 13% and CSI 464 up to 10% — wax makers' stated maximums, not targets. For help with sizes or a volume quote, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.
