Scaling · Cost reduction
The line to negotiate first is the one with the most rupees in it, multiplied by how much it can realistically move without touching quality. For a premium candle that is usually fragrance. For a value candle it is often wax. Draw your own pie before you pick up the phone.
35.6%
of a ₹387.00 candle is fragrance oil when the oil is Coffee Vanilla Tobacco at the 1 kg rate · with British Rose it is 16.4% · CSI live pricing, September 2026 · packaging at example prices
Quick answers — read this first
Which candle cost should I negotiate first? The one with the most rupees per candle that can move without changing the candle. Rank lines by cost × realistic reduction × annual volume. In our premium example that is fragrance oil, then wax, then jar, then packaging. The wick is last.

Is it always fragrance? No. With a value oil like British Rose (₹3.07/g at 1 kg), oil is only 16.4% of the candle and wax becomes the biggest line at 36.9%. The order depends on your own formula.

What can I cut without reducing quality? Buying the same oil in the right pack (never produce from 15 g testers), volume quotes on your biggest lines, and longer print runs on unchanged packaging. Switching wax or jar is a spec change, not a negotiation, so retest it before you call it quality-neutral.

How much is 5% worth? On the premium candle at 1,000 a month: 5% off oil is ₹82,550.40 a year, 5% off wax ₹66,129.60, 5% off wicks ₹3,540.00. The 5% is hypothetical, because CSI publishes no discount. See the ranking.
The short answer
Premium pie: Oil ₹137.58 · wax ₹110.22 · jar ₹70.80 · packaging ₹62.50 (lid, label, box examples + CSI tissue) · wick ₹5.90 = ₹387.00.
Value pie: Same candle with British Rose: oil ₹49.09 (16.4%), wax 36.9%, jar 23.7% of ₹298.50.
Order: Rank by rupees at stake → use pack-choice levers first (no quality risk) → then volume quotes → then spec changes only after a retest.
Where a ₹799-class candle's cost goes — and so where negotiating can move the most rupees Fragrance oil ₹137.58 · 35.6% of cost Wax ₹110.22 · 28.5% of cost Jar ₹70.80 · 18.3% of cost Packaging (lid, label, box, tissue) ₹62.50 · 16.1% of cost Wick ₹5.90 · 1.5% of cost Total ₹387.00 per candle 200 g at 8% · Coffee Vanilla Tobacco at the 1 kg rate Luxury Soy Wax Chunks · White Matte jar · Eco Thin C1 Lid, label and box are EXAMPLE prices; tissue is CSI's
The pie is for one example candle. Wax, oil, wick, jar and tissue are CSI live prices. The lid, label and box are example figures, because CSI does not list them. The share each line takes is what decides where negotiation effort pays. Change the oil and the pie changes shape, as the value example below shows.
Straight answer
I want to reduce my candle cost without reducing quality — should I negotiate bulk wax, fragrance, jars or packaging first based on their contribution to COGS?
Yes, rank by contribution, but by rupees at stake rather than share alone: line cost × realistic reduction × annual volume. Draw your candle's cost pie first. Our premium example is a 200 g candle at 8% with Coffee Vanilla Tobacco at the 1 kg rate, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, a White Matte jar and an Eco wick, plus example packaging. It costs ₹387.00. Fragrance is 35.6%, wax 28.5%, jar 18.3%, packaging 16.1% and wick 1.5%. So fragrance comes first, then wax. Swap in a value oil like British Rose, though, and wax becomes the biggest line, so always rank your own pie. Then use the levers in order of risk. First, pack choice on the same materials, which carries no quality risk. Never produce from 15 g testers, and move proven oils to the 1 kg where it is cheaper per gram. Second, volume quotes on the top two lines. CSI publishes no discount figure, so ask with real quantities. Third, and only after a retest, spec changes such as a different wax or jar. Those can save more, but they are not quality-neutral until your burn tests say so. Leave the wick until last. A 5% saving on it is worth ₹0.30 a candle.
One line: negotiate the line with the most rupees in it — and check the pie, because a cheaper oil flips the order.
If fragrance is your biggest line, the first saving is free: buy the same oil in the right pack. Coffee Vanilla Tobacco is ₹8.99/g at 100 g and ₹8.60/g at 1 kg (₹8,599.00). That is ₹6.26 less oil cost per candle with nothing about the candle changed.

Draw your own cost pie

Every maker has a line they think is expensive. It is often not the line where the money is.

Start with the cost of goods sold for one candle: every input that leaves with the candle. For this page that means materials and packaging. Labour, courier and payment fees are real costs too, but they are not bought from a raw-material supplier, so they sit outside this negotiation. Our example is a premium-positioned 200 g container candle at an 8% load: 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax. Materials use CSI live prices. Lid, label and box use example prices, because CSI does not list them. Replace them with your own suppliers' quotes.

Premium example · CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026 · packaging lines marked example
One candle, ₹387.00, line by line
Line What it is Cost per candle Share
Fragrance oil Coffee Vanilla Tobacco, 16 g at the 1 kg rate (₹8,599.00) ₹137.58 35.6%
Wax Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, 184 g at ₹599.00/kg ₹110.22 28.5%
Jar White Matte Glass Jar (₹354.00 / 5) ₹70.80 18.3%
Lid (example) Example: replace with your quote ₹18.00 4.7%
Label (example) Example: replace with your quote ₹8.00 2.1%
Box (example) Example: replace with your quote ₹30.00 7.8%
Tissue sheet (CSI) ₹650.00 / 100 sheets ₹6.50 1.7%
Wick Eco Thin C1 ₹5.90 1.5%
Total — ₹387.00 100.0%

Three lines, oil, wax and jar, make up 82.3% of the candle. Packaging, spread across four items, makes 16.1%. The wick, the item makers most often shop around for, is 1.5%. That single observation saves a lot of wasted effort. An afternoon spent finding a wick ₹0.50 cheaper is worth less than ten minutes choosing the right oil pack.

Use your real fill and your real oil
A 300 g candle, a 10% load or a ₹12-a-gram inspired-by oil changes the pie completely. Rebuild it with your own figures. The whole method is one table of your inputs, each priced at the pack you actually buy.

Rank by rupees at stake

Share tells you where the money is. What a negotiation can win is share × the reduction you can realistically get × how many candles you make. We illustrate with a hypothetical 5% on every line at 1,000 candles a month. The 5% is the reader's hypothetical, not a CSI offer, since CSI publishes no volume discount.

Premium example · hypothetical 5% on each line · 12,000 candles a year
What 5% is worth on each line
Line Cost per candle Share 5% per candle 5% over a year
Fragrance oil ₹137.58 35.6% ₹6.88 ₹82,550.40
Wax ₹110.22 28.5% ₹5.51 ₹66,129.60
Jar ₹70.80 18.3% ₹3.54 ₹42,480.00
Packaging (lid, label, box, tissue) ₹62.50 16.1% ₹3.12 ₹37,500.00
Wick ₹5.90 1.5% ₹0.30 ₹3,540.00

The ranking follows the pie exactly, because the same percentage is applied everywhere. Real negotiations are not that tidy. Some lines move more easily than others. Printed packaging often has the most room, because run length and spec drive the price. A single listed wick priced flat at ₹5.90 has the least. Weight each line by what you think is achievable, and the order can change. The size of the prize, though, is set by the pie: 5% of fragrance is worth ₹82,550.40 a year here, and 5% of the wick ₹3,540.00.

Negotiating the easy line instead of the big one. Makers often push hardest where they feel most confident, on jars or boxes, and never ask about fragrance because it feels "specialist". In the premium example, a 10% win on boxes (example ₹30.00) is ₹3.00 a candle. A 5% win on the oil is ₹6.88. Ask about the big line first, even if the answer is no.

Same method, cheaper oil, different order

Now keep everything the same except the oil. Use British Rose at its 1 kg rate of ₹3,068.00 (₹3.07/g), one of the lowest per-gram prices in the collection. The candle falls to ₹298.50, and the pie changes shape:

Value example · British Rose at the 1 kg rate · same wax, jar, wick and example packaging
Cheaper oil, different ranking
Line Cost per candle Share 5% per candle 5% over a year
Wax ₹110.22 36.9% ₹5.51 ₹66,129.60
Jar ₹70.80 23.7% ₹3.54 ₹42,480.00
Packaging (lid, label, box, tissue) ₹62.50 20.9% ₹3.12 ₹37,500.00
Fragrance oil ₹49.09 16.4% ₹2.45 ₹29,452.80
Wick ₹5.90 2.0% ₹0.30 ₹3,540.00

With a value oil, wax leads at 36.9%, the jar is second and fragrance drops to third at 16.4%. The same maker, advised to "negotiate fragrance first", would be working on the third-biggest line. This is why a rule of thumb is no substitute for your own pie. It is also why makers with a mixed range should pie their top-selling candle, not their most expensive one.

The CSI principle
Negotiate your pie, not someone else's.
Fragrance is the biggest line in many premium candles and a minor one in many value candles. Wax and jars dominate cheap candles, and packaging can dominate a small one. The right first negotiation is whichever slice of your own best-seller is biggest.

Quality-safe levers, line by line

Some savings change nothing about the candle. Some change the candle and only look like savings. Know which you are taking.

"Without reducing quality" rules out the obvious cuts: a cheaper oil, a lower load or a thinner jar. That leaves three kinds of lever, which differ in risk. Pack choice means the same material bought more cheaply, with no quality risk. Negotiation means the same material at a quoted price, also with no quality risk. Spec change means a different material that may perform the same, but only a retest can confirm it.

Every lever, what it saves and what it risks
Lever Type Saving per candle Quality risk Basis
Oil: 100 g → 1 kg of the same oil Pack choice ₹6.26 None: same oil Coffee Vanilla Tobacco ₹8.99/g → ₹8.60/g
Oil: stop producing from 15 g testers Pack choice ₹25.62 None: same oil Lavender 15 g ₹7.00/g vs 100 g ₹5.40/g
Oil: volume quote beyond 1 kg Negotiation ₹6.88 if 5% None Hypothetical 5%; CSI publishes no discount
Wax: Chunks → CSI 464 Spec change ₹16.85 Retest wick, load (≤10%), cure ₹599.00 → ₹507.40 per kg
Wax: Chunks → Natural Soy Pearl (5 kg+) Spec change ₹32.05 Retest; no ceiling quoted here ₹599.00 → ₹424.80 per kg
Wax: volume quote Negotiation ₹5.51 if 5% None Hypothetical 5%
Jar: volume quote Negotiation ₹3.54 if 5% None Hypothetical 5%
Packaging: longer print run (example 10%) Negotiation ₹5.60 if 10% None if spec unchanged Lid, label, box are example prices
Wick: anything Negotiation ₹0.30 if 5% None ₹5.90 at every pack

Pack choice comes first because it is free. The biggest pack-choice mistake is producing from 15 g testers. Across the catalogue, 15 g carries a median 23.1% premium per gram over the same oil's 100 g. For Lavender that is ₹25.62 more oil cost on every 200 g candle. The next step, from 100 g to 1 kg, saves money for some oils and not others. Of 91 oils listing both, 52 are within 1% per gram, and 24 save 5% or more. Coffee Vanilla Tobacco saves 4.3%, and British Rose 10.3%. Check your oil before you assume.

Wax is where the largest single savings sit, and they are spec changes. Moving from Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (₹599.00/kg, up to 13% load) to CSI 464 (₹507.40/kg, up to 10%) saves ₹16.85 a candle. Moving to Natural Soy Pearl at its 5 kg-and-over rate (₹424.80/kg) saves ₹32.05. Both need new test burns: wick, load, cure and surface. No fragrance ceiling for Natural Soy Pearl is quoted in our data, so check its product page. Treat these as formula decisions, and make them before a negotiation, not instead of one.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. The cheapest way to lower your wax line with us is often to buy a cheaper wax from us, CSI 464 or Natural Soy Pearl, rather than to negotiate the price of the one you use. It is also true that some of the most negotiable lines in your pie, such as labels, boxes and lids, are not ones we sell. Work those with your printer. We would rather you save the money than spend the effort on our ₹5.90 wick.

The negotiation sequence

1
Pie your best-selling candleEvery input priced at the pack you buy today, with packaging from your own quotes. Mark each line's share.
2
Take the free savings firstNo production from 15 g testers. Move proven oils to 100 g or 1 kg where the per-gram price is lower. I Have 30 Candle Fragrances but Most Sales Come from 10 — How Should I Change My Fragrance Oil Purchasing Quantities Based on Actual Demand? shows how to size packs to demand so the bigger pack does not become dead stock.
3
Ask for volume quotes on the top two linesSend real monthly quantities. CSI publishes no volume discount, so ask on WhatsApp and get the answer in writing before you build it into prices.
4
Re-quote packaging at a longer runPrinters usually price by run length. Keep the spec identical, so the saving is quality-neutral.
5
Test spec changes separatelyIf a cheaper wax or jar is attractive, run a side-by-side test batch. Only adopt it if the burn, look and throw pass your standard.
6
Leave low-share lines aloneWicks and tissue are small shares. Buy them at a sensible pack and spend your effort elsewhere.
7
Re-pie every quarterA new best-seller, a new jar or a price change reshapes the pie. The first line to negotiate can change with it.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. This page tells you that some of your most negotiable costs are items we do not sell, and that the cheapest way to lower your wax line with us may be a cheaper wax rather than a discount. It also says plainly that we publish no discount figure.

Every oil and wax price on this page comes from CSI live listings pulled on 24 September 2026, and the tissue price from the 25 September pull. Wick and White Matte jar prices were verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026. Shares, per-candle savings and annual figures are arithmetic on those prices, shown to two decimals.

The lid, label and box prices, the hypothetical 5% and 10% reductions and the 1,000-a-month volume are examples and hypotheticals to replace with your own quotes and volumes. For a volume quote on wax or oils, GST invoicing or documentation, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.
