I Want to Scale a Candle Business from 100 to 10,000 Candles a Month — How Should My Wax, Fragrance Oil, Wick, Jar and Packaging Purchasing Quantities Change as Production Grows?
Aktie
Where do CSI's listed packs stop? Oils at 1 kg per scent, container waxes at 10 kg bags, Natural Soy Pearl at 50 kg, wicks at 1,000, and White Matte jars are listed in packs of 5. Beyond that, quantities are quoted on WhatsApp and no volume discount figure is published.
Does the cost per candle fall as I scale? Only slightly at listed prices: ₹262.66 at 100 and ₹257.81 from 1,000 in the example, all from oil moving to the kilo. Anything further comes from quoted volume pricing, which you have to ask for.
When should I move to the next stage of buying? When your orders are more about counting packs than choosing them. For example, when you need more than about ten 10 kg bags a month, or several kilos of one scent, it is time to ask for a quote. See the triggers.
The six-stage ladder
Every figure here uses the same candle: 200 g at an 8% load, so 184 g of wax and 16 g of oil, with a 4% allowance on both for pour loss and test burns (a working assumption; plan 3–5%). One wick and one jar per candle. The wax is Natural Soy Pearl, chosen because it is the only CSI wax listed up to 50 kg. No fragrance ceiling is quoted for it in our data, so treat 8% as a working load and check the wax's product page. If you use Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (rated up to 13%), the kilos are identical and only the price changes.
| Candles / month | Wax | Fragrance oil | Wicks (Eco Thin C1) | Jars |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100 | 19.14 kg · 2 × 10 kg (19.14 kg needed) | 1.66 kg · 100 g–500 g per scent | 1 × 100 | 20 × pack of 5 |
| 500 | 95.68 kg · 10 × 10 kg or 2 × 50 kg | 8.32 kg · 1 kg for top scents, 100 g for the tail | 1 × 500 | 100 × pack of 5 → ask for a jar quote |
| 1,000 | 191.36 kg · 4 × 50 kg (or 20 × 10 kg) | 16.64 kg · Several 1 kg per top scent | 1 × 1,000 | Jar quote on WhatsApp |
| 2,500 | 478.40 kg · ≈ 9.6 × 50 kg → monthly quote | 41.60 kg · Kilos beyond listed packs → quote | 3 × 1,000 | Jar quote on WhatsApp |
| 5,000 | 956.80 kg · ≈ 19 × 50 kg → standing order | 83.20 kg · Standing oil quote per scent | 5 × 1,000 | Standing jar order |
| 10,000 | 1,913.60 kg · ≈ 38 × 50 kg → supply agreement | 166.40 kg · Supply agreement + safety stock | 10 × 1,000 | Supply agreement + backup |
Read the table from left to right as a change in the method of buying, not just the amount. At 100 and 500 a month everything is a listed pack, and the only decision is which size. At 1,000 the numbers still fit the listings, but they get awkward: twenty 10 kg bags, or two hundred 5-packs of jars. From 2,500 they do not fit at all. Nobody should buy 48 bags or 500 five-packs one click at a time. That is the point to ask for a quote on your actual monthly quantities.
| Candles / month | Oil rate used | Material cost per candle | Monthly material spend |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 | ₹6.29/g (median 100 g) | ₹262.66 | ₹26,265.53 |
| 500 | ₹6.29/g (median 100 g) | ₹262.66 | ₹1,31,327.66 |
| 1,000 | ₹6.00/g (median 1 kg) | ₹257.81 | ₹2,57,813.09 |
| 2,500 | ₹6.00/g (median 1 kg) | ₹257.81 | ₹6,44,532.72 |
| 5,000 | ₹6.00/g (median 1 kg) | ₹257.81 | ₹12,89,065.44 |
| 10,000 | ₹6.00/g (median 1 kg) | ₹257.81 | ₹25,78,130.88 |
The per-candle figure moves once, when the oil rate drops from the median 100 g price (₹629.00) to the median 1 kg price (₹5,999.00). That is ₹4.84 a candle. Everything else is flat at listed prices. Pearl is ₹424.80 a kilo from 5 kg to 50 kg, wicks ₹5.90 at every pack and jars ₹70.80. So the monthly bill grows almost exactly a hundredfold, from ₹26,265.53 to ₹25,78,130.88. Whatever you negotiate at the top stages is the only thing that bends that line, and CSI publishes no discount figure, so plan on the listed rate until a quote says otherwise.
Wax: bags, then sacks, then contracts
Wax is the heaviest and most predictable line, which makes it the first to move to bulk formats. At 100 a month you need 19.14 kg: two 10 kg bags of Pearl at ₹4,248.00 each, with a little carried over. At 500 it is 95.68 kg, which is ten bags or two 50 kg sacks. At 1,000 it is 191.36 kg, where four 50 kg sacks at ₹21,240.00 each become the natural format. The price per kilo is the same, but there are far fewer units to handle and order.
At 2,500 (478.40 kg) the order is nearly ten sacks a month. At 5,000 (956.80 kg) it is about nineteen, and at 10,000 (1,913.60 kg) about thirty-eight. At those volumes the questions are no longer about pack size. They are about batch consistency (can a month's wax come from one production lot?), delivery rhythm (weekly or fortnightly drops rather than one mountain of sacks) and price (a quoted rate for a committed monthly volume). All of those are conversations, not listings. I Need 1,000 Identical Candles — Should I Buy All the Wax from One Batch to Reduce Production Variation? covers why one batch matters for large identical runs.
Fragrance: bottles, kilos, then quotes
Oil scales differently from wax because it is split across scents. Total oil grows in a straight line, from 1.66 kg a month at 100 candles to 166.40 kg at 10,000. What matters for buying is kilos per scent. With 12 scents at 10,000 a month, an average scent needs about 13.87 kg a month, and a top scent several times that. CSI lists oils up to 1 kg per scent, so from the 2,500 stage your top scents are well past the listing, and they should be quoted.
| Candles / month | Total oil | Per scent, 12 scents | Per scent, 25 scents | Buying |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100 | 1.66 kg | 0.14 kg | 0.07 kg | 100 g–500 g bottles |
| 500 | 8.32 kg | 0.69 kg | 0.33 kg | 1 kg for top scents |
| 1,000 | 16.64 kg | 1.39 kg | 0.67 kg | Several 1 kg per top scent |
| 2,500 | 41.60 kg | 3.47 kg | 1.66 kg | Quote per scent beyond 1 kg |
| 5,000 | 83.20 kg | 6.93 kg | 3.33 kg | Quote per scent beyond 1 kg |
| 10,000 | 166.40 kg | 13.87 kg | 6.66 kg | Quote per scent beyond 1 kg |
Two things follow. First, the number of scents decides how early you hit the quote stage. A 25-scent range at 2,500 a month averages 1.66 kg per scent, while a 12-scent range averages 3.47 kg. The top of either range is past the listing, but the tail of a wide range can stay on 100 g bottles for a long time. I Have 30 Candle Fragrances but Most Sales Come from 10 — How Should I Change My Fragrance Oil Purchasing Quantities Based on Actual Demand? shows how to split the buying by demand tier. Second, per-gram price breaks on the listed packs are rare. For 52 of 91 oils the 1 kg costs within 1% of the 100 g per gram, and 24 save 5% or more. So the reason to move top scents to kilos and then quotes is supply security and fewer orders, with any price benefit to be confirmed in a quote.

Wicks, jars and packaging
Wicks are the easiest line to scale. Eco Thin C1 costs ₹5.90 a wick at every pack, from 10 to 1,000. At 100 a month buy the 100-pack (₹590.00). From 1,000 a month buy 1,000s (₹5,900.00), one to ten packs a month. Because the price is flat, hold them deep, six to eight weeks, and take wicks off the critical list. Wick size for your jar is not published, so settle it with burn tests before you scale.
Jars scale badly on a retail listing. The White Matte Glass Jar is listed in packs of 5 (₹354.00). At 100 a month that is 20 packs, which is fine. At 1,000 it is 200 packs, and at 10,000 it is 2,000, which is not a sensible way to buy. The 200 ml Salsa jar with lug cap is listed up to 100 (₹2,950.00). From the 500–1,000 stage, ask for a jar quote on WhatsApp. At 10,000, jars need the same treatment as wax: a supply agreement and a pre-tested backup jar, because running out of jars stops everything. I'm Producing Thousands of Candles a Month — Is It Better to Negotiate with One Main Raw-Material Supplier or Maintain Backup Suppliers for Critical Materials? covers the backup.
Packaging is the one line CSI mostly does not supply. We list Premium Packing Tissue Paper at ₹650.00 per 100 sheets, but no labels, boxes, lids (apart from capped jars) or mailers. Its scaling curve is a printer's curve. Longer runs usually lower the unit price, but they raise the minimum order and the risk of printing labels for a scent that stops selling. As an example only, a label that costs ₹10.00 on a short run might cost ₹4.00 on a long one. Get your own printer's prices at each stage. Match print runs to your demand tiers, with long runs for top scents and short runs for the tail.
| Candles / month | Wicks | Jars (White Matte, packs of 5) | Labels and boxes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 | 1 × 100 (₹590.00) | 20 packs (₹7,080.00) | Short print runs |
| 500 | 1 × 500 (₹2,950.00) | 100 packs (₹35,400.00) or ask for a quote | Runs per top scent |
| 1,000 | 1 × 1,000 (₹5,900.00) | Ask for a jar quote | Longer runs, tiered by scent |
| 2,500 | 3 × 1,000 (₹17,700.00) | Monthly jar quote | Printer contract |
| 5,000 | 5 × 1,000 (₹29,500.00) | Standing jar order | Printer contract + second printer |
| 10,000 | 10 × 1,000 (₹59,000.00) | Supply agreement + backup jar | Contracts with backup |
Melting capacity by stage
Purchasing and melting scale together, because wax you cannot melt is wax you should not have bought yet. CSI lists a 1-litre mini electric melter at ₹2,360.00 and an imported electric wax melter at ₹21,240.00 (10 kg capacity) or ₹25,960.00 (20 kg capacity). Melter throughput is not published, so the figures below count full melts only. How many melts a day your workshop can do depends on your own heat-up, pour and cleaning times.
| Candles / month | Wax / month | Full 10 kg melts | Full 20 kg melts | Per working day (26 days), 20 kg |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100 | 19.14 kg | 1.9 | 1.0 | 0.04 |
| 500 | 95.68 kg | 9.6 | 4.8 | 0.18 |
| 1,000 | 191.36 kg | 19.1 | 9.6 | 0.37 |
| 2,500 | 478.40 kg | 47.8 | 23.9 | 0.92 |
| 5,000 | 956.80 kg | 95.7 | 47.8 | 1.84 |
| 10,000 | 1,913.60 kg | 191.4 | 95.7 | 3.68 |
At 100 a month, a hob and a pouring jug, or the mini melter, is enough. At 1,000, a 10 kg melter doing about 19 full melts a month is realistic. At 10,000, even a 20 kg melter needs almost four full melts every working day, which usually means several melters and a production layout designed around them. If your purchasing plan outruns your melting plan, the wax waits in sacks. CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. This page shows where our listed packs stop (1 kg per oil, 10 kg container wax, 50 kg Natural Soy Pearl, 1,000 wicks, jars in fives) and tells you not to buy ahead of your stage, because our listed prices barely reward it.
Every oil and wax price on this page comes from CSI live listings pulled on 24 September 2026. Melter, tissue, Salsa jar and wick pack prices come from the 25 September pull. The White Matte jar was verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026. Quantities, spend and melts are arithmetic on those figures, shown to two decimals.
The 200 g candle, the 8% working load (no ceiling is quoted for Natural Soy Pearl in our data), the 4% allowance, the median oil rates, the 12- and 25-scent splits, the example label prices and the stage triggers are working assumptions.
