One price, three builds: what ₹999.00 can actually buy in wax, fragrance, wick and vessel once your margin has taken its share.
₹399.60
what a 60% margin leaves for materials plus your own costs on an illustrative ₹999.00 candle · three builds priced from live stock at ₹220.09, ₹348.14 and ₹892.30 · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How much can I spend on materials for a ₹999.00 candle? Choose the margin first and the budget falls out. At 60% of an illustrative ₹999.00 list price you have ₹399.60 for everything you buy — CSI materials and your own labels, boxes, ribbon, courier and payment charges. At 65% it is ₹349.65; at 70% it is ₹299.70.

What does a premium candle actually cost to make from CSI stock? Three builds, priced live: a restrained 150 g candle in CSI 464 with British Rose at ₹220.09; a coconut-soy candle with White Royal Oud, a black glass jar and a wooden wick at ₹348.14; and a 500 g apothecary candle at ₹892.30.

Which of the three fits at ₹999.00? The first two. Build A leaves ₹179.51 for your own costs at a 60% margin and Build B leaves ₹51.46, which is tight but workable. Build C is ₹892.30 of materials against a ₹499.50 budget even at 50% — it is ₹392.80 over before a box is bought.

What should I cut first if the build does not fit? Rank the cuts in rupees, not in feelings. Moving from a ₹8.10/g oil to a ₹3.07/g oil at the same 8% load saves ₹60.42; dropping the fill from 150 g to 120 g saves ₹38.56; changing the vessel saves up to ₹36.20. Cut in that order and protect the wick and the throw.
The short answer
The margin decides the budget, not the other way round: on an illustrative ₹999.00 list price, a 60% margin leaves ₹399.60 for materials and your own costs, and a 70% margin leaves ₹299.70. Pick the number before you pick the jar.
Two of the three builds fit: ₹220.09 for a restrained 150 g candle, ₹348.14 for one that feels premium in the hand, and ₹892.30 for a 500 g apothecary candle that does not fit at this price and never will.
Cut the oil and the fill before you cut the wick: the fragrance line moves by ₹60.42 between CSI's own oils at the same load, and 30 g of fill is ₹38.56. A wick chosen to save ₹31.86 can cost you the whole candle.

What it shows: three candle builds priced from live CSI stock in September 2026, each drawn against an illustrative ₹999.00 list price, with the dashed line marking where materials plus the reader's own costs must stop to keep a 60% margin. Deliberately left out: printed labels, outer boxes, ribbon, mailers, courier, payment or marketplace charges and labour, none of which CSI sells or prices — they come out of the grey portion before anything is profit. The ₹999.00 price and the margin percentages are illustrative arithmetic, not recommended prices.
Straight answer
How much can you afford to spend on the materials in a candle you intend to sell for ₹999.00?
Less than you think, and the number is decided by your margin rather than by your taste. Take an illustrative list price of ₹999.00. If you want to keep 60% of it, everything you buy — CSI materials and your own labels, outer box, ribbon, mailer, courier and payment charges — has to fit inside ₹399.60. At 65% that shrinks to ₹349.65 and at 70% to ₹299.70. Now price three real builds from live CSI stock. Build A — 150 g of Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, British Rose at 8% of wax weight, a Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid and an Eco Candle Wick Thick (C2) — is ₹220.09, or 22% of the list price, and leaves ₹179.51 for everything else. Build B — 150 g of Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468, White Royal Oud at 8%, a Black Glass Jar with Black Lid and a Performance Wooden Wick — is ₹348.14, or 35%, and leaves ₹51.46, which is too thin unless your own costs are genuinely small. Build C — a 500 g Apothecary Glass Candle Jar with Dome Lid, 500 g of coconut soy and 40 g of the same oud — is ₹892.30, 89% of the price, and is not a ₹999.00 candle at all; at a 35% material share it wants a list price nearer ₹2,549.42. The practical answer is Build B trimmed: keep the coconut-soy wax and the wooden wick, which the customer notices, and move the oil and the vessel, which they do not, and you land at ₹306.59 with ₹43.06 of headroom at a 65% margin.
One line: On an illustrative ₹999.00 candle a 60% margin leaves ₹399.60 for materials and your own costs — and the three builds priced here come in at ₹220.09, ₹348.14 and ₹892.30.

What ₹999.00 actually has to cover

The price is not a budget. It is a queue, and materials are near the back of it.

Everything on this page uses ₹999.00 as an illustrative list price: it is a number to do arithmetic with, not a price CSI recommends. Out of it come five things, in this order. Whatever your channel takes. Your own costs — printed label, outer box, ribbon or tissue, mailer, courier, payment charges. The CSI materials. Your labour. And last, what you keep. Makers get into trouble because they design the candle first and discover the queue afterwards.

One thing this page deliberately does not do is work out your tax position. CSI's prices are inclusive of tax and GST invoicing is available on request, but what you owe on your own sales, and how a marketplace treats it, is a question for your accountant, not for a supplier's blog. Treat ₹999.00 here as the number on your listing and run your own figures underneath it.

Budgeting the material spend against the price instead of against the margin. A maker who decides that materials may be 'about a third' of ₹999.00 has given themselves ₹333.00 to spend and no room at all for the box, the label and the courier, because those come out of the same third in every sane accounting. Fix: subtract the margin first. At 60% you have ₹399.60 for materials plus your own costs, and the CSI share of that has to be smaller than the whole. Build A uses 22% of the list price and Build B uses 35%, which is why Build B only works when your own costs are lean.

Pick the margin, and the material budget appears

There is one sum here and it takes ten seconds. Everything else on this page is shopping.

Margin comes out of the price, not off the cost. At a 60% margin, cost is 40% of the price; at 70%, cost is 30%. So the material budget on an illustrative ₹999.00 candle is simply ₹999.00 multiplied by one minus the margin — and that budget covers everything you pay for, not just the things CSI sells.

65% ₹349.65 ₹129.56 ₹1.51 ₹43.06

Priced above: an illustrative ₹999.00 list price against Build A at ₹220.09, Build B at ₹348.14 and Build B trimmed at ₹306.59, each costed from live CSI variant prices in September 2026, taxes included. The margins are illustrative arithmetic, not recommended prices. The remaining columns are what is left for printed labels, outer boxes, ribbon, mailers, courier, payment charges and labour — none of which CSI sells or prices.

Read the right-hand columns as a warning rather than a result. A negative number means the build cannot be made at that margin. A number under about a hundred rupees means the build only survives if your box, label and courier together are genuinely cheap — which, on a candle presented as luxury, they usually are not, because presentation is exactly what a customer is paying ₹999.00 for. Build B at 65% leaves ₹1.51, which is the definition of no room.

The CSI principle
A price is a container. Everything you admire has to fit inside it, including the box it arrives in.
At a 60% margin, ₹999.00 gives you ₹399.60 for the whole physical object. Build B's materials alone are ₹348.14 of it.

Three builds, priced from live stock

Not three price points. Three answers to the same price, and one of them is a no.

All three use fragrance at 8% of wax weight, the way CSI product pages state loads. Two ceilings always apply and the lower one governs: CSI 464 publishes up to 10% and CSI 468 up to 13%, while the British Rose page gives up to 10% for soy and the White Royal Oud page gives 6–10%. Eight per cent sits comfortably under every one of those.

150 g, CSI 464, British Rose, clear glass and gold
The candle that does not fight its price. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 is a single-pour container flake whose page claims strong cold and hot throw, excellent glass adhesion and a creamy opaque finish, with a 60-month shelf life in cool dry storage. British Rose publishes a flash point of 192°C and 0% vanillin, so a white or cream wax stays white — which matters when the vessel is clear and the wax is on show. The Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid is a 150 gram vessel at ₹94.40 and an Eco Candle Wick Thick (C2) at ₹9.44 is the larger of the two Eco sizes. Prove the wick in this exact jar with a burn test before you commit — CSI does not publish wick sizes by diameter.

Premium · the build that feels like the price
150 g, CSI 468, White Royal Oud, black glass, wooden wick
Three upgrades the customer can actually detect. Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 is a coconut-soy one-pour flake whose page describes an ultra-smooth creamy finish, minimal frosting and excellent glass adhesion, with a melting point of 50–53°C and a pour temperature of 58–60°C — a lower, gentler window than a straight soy. White Royal Oud is described on its page as a modern oriental white oud at 6–10% of total wax weight with IFRA certification stated. The Black Glass Jar with Black Lid at ₹107.00 hides the wax and shows the label. A Performance Wooden Wick at ₹41.30 brings the crackle, and it is the single most expensive small part in the candle — nearly five times a C2 wick.

Statement · the build that does not fit
500 g apothecary jar, coconut soy, 40 g of oud, two wicks
This is the candle most makers picture when they say luxury, and it is the reason the sum has to be done first. The Apothecary Glass Candle Jar with Dome Lid at ₹212.40 for the 500 gm size is a genuinely handsome vessel, but a 500 g fill needs 500 g of wax and, at the same 8% load, 40 g of oil — ₹324.12 of White Royal Oud on its own. The page gives an outer-rim diameter of approximately 10 cm and a fill capacity of about 500–700 g, and a vessel that wide needs more than one wick: Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made are described as being for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm, and two of them is ₹24.00. Everything about it is correct except the price you wanted to charge.
Component Quantity Rate Cost
Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 500 g ₹637.00/kg (5 kg) ₹318.50
White Royal Oud 40 g at 8% ₹8.10/g (1 kg) ₹324.12
Apothecary Glass Candle Jar with Dome Lid 1 500 gm size ₹212.40

₹892.30 of CSI materials · 89% of an illustrative ₹999.00 · ₹392.80 over budget even at a 50% margin See the apothecary jar

Put the three side by side and the pattern is obvious. Between Build A and Build B the wax rises by ₹19.44, the oil by ₹60.42, the vessel by ₹12.60 and the wick by ₹31.86 — four small decisions that together add ₹128.05, which is more than half of what a 60% margin leaves you. Build C is not a slightly dearer Build B; it is 3.3 times the fill weight, and fill weight multiplies the two lines that scale.

Fill weight is the only ingredient that charges you twice — once for wax, once for the fragrance it needs.
— CandleMakingSuppliesIndia

What Build C really needs, and why it is not ₹999.00

The candle is not wrong. The price tag is on the wrong candle.

A 500 g apothecary candle at ₹892.30 of materials is a perfectly good product. It is simply not a ₹999.00 product: at that list price materials alone are 89% of the money, before a single label is printed. If you want materials at about 35% of the list price — a share that leaves room for the presentation a candle like this demands — the arithmetic wants a list price nearer ₹2,549.42. That figure is illustrative arithmetic, not advice on what to charge.

There are only three honest ways out and you should choose one deliberately. Raise the price and sell it as the piece it is. Shrink the candle — the same wax, oil and vessel family at 150 g is Build B, which does fit. Or change the oil: at 40 g, the difference between White Royal Oud and British Rose is ₹201.40 on one candle, which is most of the gap on its own. What you must not do is quietly drop the load below the range the oil page publishes to make the sum work; 6% is the bottom of White Royal Oud's stated range, and under it you are guessing.

Cutting the fragrance load to rescue a price. It is the first lever makers reach for and the worst one. Dropping from 8% to 6% on Build C saves ₹81.03, and it changes the product the customer is buying — throw is the single thing a candle is judged on, and a candle that smells weak at ₹999.00 is worse than no candle at that price. The reviewer who wrote that after five years of testing she had found a fragrance strong enough to use at the minimum percentage was describing the right way round to arrive here: choose an oil that performs low, do not simply dose an expensive oil low. Fix: change the oil, the fill weight or the price — not the load you tested.
Testing a premium build? Buy trial sizes rather than committing a kilo: Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 500 g ₹325.00 · White Royal Oud 15 gm ₹130.00 · Dark Vanilla Oud 15 gm ₹105.02 · Black Glass Jar with Black Lid 10 for ₹1,070.00 · Pen Thermometer ₹354.00 for the 58–60°C pour window.

What has to give, ranked in rupees

Cut in the order the customer notices least. That order is not the order of your affection.

When a build is over budget, the temptation is to shave everything by a little. Do the opposite: find the one or two lines that move the most rupees, decide whether the customer can detect them, and leave the rest alone. Here is every lever on Build B, with what it is worth on one candle.

Build B · every lever, largest first

Change Saves per candle Does the customer notice? Verdict
White Royal Oud → British Rose, same 8% load ₹60.42 Yes — it is a different candle, not a cheaper one Only if the new scent is one you would have chosen anyway

All at a 150 g fill and an 8% fragrance load of wax weight unless stated.

Take the two best-value rows and Build B becomes ₹306.59: coconut-soy wax and the wooden wick kept, Dark Vanilla Oud in place of the White Royal Oud and a clear jar with a golden lid in place of black glass. That is ₹41.54 saved without touching the two things a customer meets first — the smell and the sound — and it leaves ₹43.06 at a 65% margin instead of ₹1.51.

Spend the saving on the label, not on the wax

At this price the customer's first three seconds are the box, the label and the lid. None of those are CSI products and none of them have a figure on this page, which is exactly why they are so easy to underfund: they sit in the part of the budget nobody costs. If trimming the build frees ₹41.54 a candle, the highest-return place to put it is almost never a dearer wax — it is print quality, a rigid box instead of a folding one, or a courier service that arrives without dents. One CSI reviewer's whole complaint about a tin was that some arrived dented; at ₹999.00 that is the difference between a repeat customer and a refund.

The costs CSI cannot price for you

The grey part of every bar on that diagram is yours, and it is where luxury actually lives.

CSI sells wax, fragrance, wicks, vessels, dyes, finishing stickers and tools. It does not sell printed labels, rigid boxes, sleeves, ribbon, tissue, mailers or courier services, and it does not publish freight rates or delivery times. So this page cannot put a number on any of them, and neither should you until you have an invoice. Use the worksheet below, fill it from real quotations, and total the candle as materials plus your own costs.

Assuming a premium candle can travel in a standard mailer. Glass at 150 g plus a rigid box is a heavier, bulkier parcel than the candle you used to post, and both the packing and the courier line change with it — in an Indian summer a parcel can also sit in a van at 40°C, which soft soy does not enjoy. None of that has a figure here because none of it is a CSI cost, but it is the row most likely to be wrong in your first costing. Fix: pack one real candle, weigh it, and get a real quotation before you publish the price. One CSI reviewer said plainly that delivery charges were restricting what she ordered; your customers will feel the same way about yours.

Prove the build before you print the price

A price you publish is a promise about a candle you have burned. Burn it first.
1
1. Buy the trial sizes, not the kilosCSI 468 at 500 g is ₹325.00 and White Royal Oud at 15 gm is ₹130.00. That is enough for three candles of each variant you are considering, and it costs a fraction of the 1 kg pricing you will move to once the build is settled. Buy the vessel in its smallest pack too — the packs of 10 are the smallest most of these jars come in.
2
2. Pour the same candle three waysOne variable at a time: the oil, then the vessel, then the wick. Pour two of each — one to burn, one sealed and dated as a retained sample. Use a Pen Thermometer and respect CSI 468's published pour window of 58–60°C; a lower, gentler pour window is one of the reasons this grade behaves well in glass, and guessing at it undoes the advantage.
3
3. Cure properly, then burn properly14–21 days, and take the long end before you make a pricing decision on the result. Then burn to a full melt pool, twice, in a room of the size you expect the customer to have. What you are testing is whether the candle feels like its price at the moment of lighting, not whether it looks right on a table.
4
4. Cost the winner, then set the priceOnly now do the sum on this page. Materials from the winning build, your own costs from real quotations, margin on top, and see whether ₹999.00 is the right number or whether the candle you actually want to sell is a ₹2,549.42 candle. A trial run of 100 of Build B trimmed is ₹30,659.30 of CSI materials — enough to launch with, small enough to be wrong about.

One last honesty. CSI sells every grade compared here, and the page still says that the cheaper wax is usually the right one: moving Build B from CSI 468 to CSI 464 saves only ₹19.44 and most customers will not detect it after a proper cure. The upgrades worth paying for at this price are the ones the customer meets in the first minute — the vessel, the scent and the wick — and even those should be chosen after a burn test rather than from a product description. If you want the working figures a page does not publish before you commit, ask on WhatsApp rather than guessing.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles, and sells every grade, oil, wick and vessel compared on this page — which is why the page says plainly that the dearer wax is usually not the upgrade worth paying for. Moving Build B from Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 to Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 saves only ₹19.44 on a 150 g candle and most customers will not detect it after a proper cure, while the fragrance line moves by ₹60.42 between two oils CSI stocks. The page also states that one of its three builds does not fit the price at all: at ₹892.30 of materials, 89% of an illustrative ₹999.00, Build C is ₹392.80 over budget even at a 50% margin.

Every price comes from live CSI stock on 11 September 2026 at September 2026 pricing, taxes included, and the linked product pages are authoritative if anything changes. Fragrance loads are percentages of wax weight, as CSI product pages state them: Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 publishes up to 10%, Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 up to 13% with a melting point of 50–53°C and a pour temperature of 58–60°C, British Rose publishes up to 10% for soy with a 192°C flash point and 0% vanillin, White Royal Oud publishes 6–10% and states IFRA certification, and Dark Vanilla Oud publishes 6–10% and states IFRA certification. Where a wax ceiling and an oil range differ the lower governs. The ₹999.00 list price, the {inr(C_price)} price implied for Build C and every margin percentage are illustrative arithmetic, not recommended prices; CSI does not advise on pricing, tax or licensing. Wick sizes by diameter are not published on the wick pages, so every build here says to settle the wick with a burn test. Printed labels, rigid boxes, sleeves, ribbon, tissue, mailers, courier, payment or marketplace charges and labour are not sold or published by CSI, carry no figure anywhere on this page, and are left as the reader's own rows.

Frequently asked questions

What percentage of my selling price should raw materials be?
There is no universal answer, but the arithmetic is fixed: materials plus your own costs equal the price times one minus your margin. On an illustrative ₹999.00 candle at 60%, that whole allowance is ₹399.60, and CSI materials have to be comfortably less than it. Build A here uses 22% of the list price and Build B uses 35%.
Is coconut soy worth the extra over plain soy in a premium candle?
On cost, the gap is small: ₹19.44 on a 150 g candle between CSI 468 and CSI 464. What you are buying is the finish the page describes — ultra-smooth and creamy, minimal frosting — and a lower 58–60°C pour window. Whether your customer detects it is a question your own burn test answers, not a product description.
Can I use a cheaper fragrance oil and keep the candle premium?
Often yes, and the numbers are large: 12 g at 8% costs ₹36.82 as British Rose, ₹68.29 as Dark Vanilla Oud and ₹97.24 as White Royal Oud. Choose an oil that performs at the bottom of its published range rather than dosing an expensive oil below the range it publishes.
Why does a 500 g candle cost so much more than three times a 150 g one?
Because fill weight charges you twice — for wax and for the fragrance that wax needs — and then the vessel and the extra wick arrive on top. Build C at 500 g is ₹892.30 against Build B's ₹348.14: the wax and oil alone are ₹642.62, and a wide vessel needs two wicks rather than one.
Should I include packaging in the material budget?
Yes, in the budget — but never as a number taken from a supplier's blog. Printed labels, rigid boxes, ribbon, mailers and courier are not sold or priced by CSI, so they belong in your worksheet as rows you fill from real quotations. At a premium price they are frequently larger than the wick, the stickers and the dye put together.
How many candles should I make before I commit to the price?
Enough to burn and to be wrong about cheaply. Two candles of each variant — one burned, one retained and dated — settles the build; a first run of 100 of Build B trimmed is ₹30,659.30 of CSI materials. Cure 14–21 days before you judge throw, because a candle judged at day three will always seem worse than the one your customer receives.
Price it, then build it
₹999.00 at a 60% margin leaves ₹399.60 for the whole object — here is what that buys.
Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 ₹637.00/kg, up to 13%, pour 58–60°C · White Royal Oud ₹8.10/g at 1 kg, 6–10% · Dark Vanilla Oud ₹5.69/g at 1 kg · Black Glass Jar with Black Lid ₹107.00 · Performance Wooden Wicks ₹41.30 each at 100 · GST invoicing, MSDS and IFRA documentation on request.

About this guide: Written by the CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA team. The method — subtract the margin first, cost two or three complete builds from live prices, rank the possible cuts in rupees against what a customer can detect, and leave every cost your supplier does not sell as a blank row — applies to any candle maker, at any price point, with any supplier.
