I Want to Sell a Candle at ₹399 — What Is the Maximum Raw-Material and Packaging Cost I Should Target Before Finalising the Formula?
Aktie
Can a 200 g glass-jar soy candle work at ₹399? In a White Matte jar with Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, no — materials alone are ₹238.45 with the cheapest oil. In a lug-capped Salsa jar with Natural Soy Pearl Wax and Citrus Lemon, ₹163.81, which fits the ₹120 and ₹150 targets but not ₹180.
What about a smaller candle? An 85 g Golden Aluminium Tin with CSI 464 and Royal Apricot costs ₹103.10 in materials and fits every target. It is less candle for the money, which is a positioning decision, not only a cost one.
How expensive an oil can I afford? In the 200 g Salsa build with CSI 464, the ceiling allows up to ₹3.85 a gram of oil to keep ₹120.00, ₹2.04 to keep ₹150.00. The oil cap lists what fits.
Work backwards from ₹399
₹399 is a common price point because it sits under ₹400 and feels like an easy purchase or a small gift. It is also a price where a hand-poured soy candle has very little room, so it is worth designing the product to the number rather than hoping a favourite recipe fits. The method has four steps. Start with the price. Remove every per-candle cost that is not materials or packaging. Remove packaging. Remove the amount you need to keep. What remains is the ceiling for wax, oil, wick, jar and wastage together.
| Line | Keep ₹120.00 | Keep ₹150.00 | Keep ₹180.00 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Selling price | ₹399.00 | ₹399.00 | ₹399.00 |
| Payment fee (example) | − ₹10.00 | − ₹10.00 | − ₹10.00 |
| Shipping supplies (example) | − ₹18.00 | − ₹18.00 | − ₹18.00 |
| Labour (example) | − ₹20.00 | − ₹20.00 | − ₹20.00 |
| Breakage and returns allowance (example) | − ₹8.00 | − ₹8.00 | − ₹8.00 |
| Label (example) + tissue (CSI ₹6.50) + kraft sleeve (example) | − ₹26.50 | − ₹26.50 | − ₹26.50 |
| Amount you keep per candle | − ₹120.00 | − ₹150.00 | − ₹180.00 |
| Materials ceiling | ₹196.50 | ₹166.50 | ₹136.50 |
| Materials + packaging ceiling | ₹223.00 | ₹193.00 | ₹163.00 |
| Gross margin on materials + packaging | 44.1% | 51.6% | 59.1% |
| Markup on materials + packaging | 78.9% | 106.7% | 144.8% |
The last two rows show the same ceiling in the two percentages people use. Gross margin is (price − cost) ÷ price; markup is (price − cost) ÷ cost. Keeping ₹150.00 after every example cost means materials plus packaging can take no more than 48.4% of the price — a 51.6% gross margin, or a 106.7% markup, on those two lines. If you prefer to think in simple percentage caps, the table below shows what 30%, 35% and 40% of ₹399 allow.
| Cap on materials + packaging | Rupees | Leaves for materials | Gross margin on those lines | Markup on those lines |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30% of price | ₹119.70 | ₹93.20 | 70.0% | 233.3% |
| 35% of price | ₹139.65 | ₹113.15 | 65.0% | 185.7% |
| 40% of price | ₹159.60 | ₹133.10 | 60.0% | 150.0% |
Six real builds against the ceiling
Here are six candles built entirely from CSI's listed wax, oil, wick and container prices, each at an 8% fragrance load with a 4% wastage allowance on wax and oil (a working assumption within the usual 3–5%). The first is the default 200 g candle used across this cluster. The rest change one or two lines at a time to see what it takes to get under ₹399's ceilings.
| Build | What it is | Oil | Wax | Container | Materials incl. wastage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | 200 g · White Matte jar · Luxury Soy Wax Chunks · Citrus Lemon 1 kg | ₹45.31 | ₹110.22 | ₹70.80 | ₹238.45 |
| B | 200 g · Salsa jar with lug cap · CSI 464 · Citrus Lemon 1 kg | ₹45.31 | ₹93.36 | ₹29.50 | ₹179.62 |
| C | 200 g · Salsa jar with lug cap · Natural Soy Pearl 5 kg · Citrus Lemon 1 kg | ₹45.31 | ₹78.16 | ₹29.50 | ₹163.81 |
| D | 200 g · Salsa jar with lug cap · CSI 464 · Peach Melon Berry 1 kg | ₹66.84 | ₹93.36 | ₹29.50 | ₹202.01 |
| E | 85 g · Golden Aluminium Tin · CSI 464 · Royal Apricot 1 kg | ₹24.94 | ₹39.68 | ₹30.00 | ₹103.10 |
| F | 85 g · Golden Aluminium Tin · Luxury Soy Wax Chunks · Eucalyptus Spearmint 1 kg | ₹20.86 | ₹46.84 | ₹30.00 | ₹106.31 |
| Build | Materials | Keep ₹120 (ceiling ₹196.50) | Keep ₹150 (ceiling ₹166.50) | Keep ₹180 (ceiling ₹136.50) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | ₹238.45 | over by ₹41.95 | over by ₹71.95 | over by ₹101.95 |
| B | ₹179.62 | fits | over by ₹13.12 | over by ₹43.12 |
| C | ₹163.81 | fits | fits | over by ₹27.31 |
| D | ₹202.01 | over by ₹5.51 | over by ₹35.51 | over by ₹65.51 |
| E | ₹103.10 | fits | fits | fits |
| F | ₹106.31 | fits | fits | fits |
Build A, the White Matte jar with Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, misses every target even with the lowest-priced oil in the catalogue — the jar alone is ₹70.80. That candle belongs at a higher price, which the ₹799 post costs in full. Switching to the lug-capped 200 ml Salsa jar (build B) saves ₹41.30 a candle and includes a closure. Switching the wax to Natural Soy Pearl (build C) saves another ₹15.81. Swapping Citrus Lemon for Peach Melon Berry (build D) adds ₹22.39 and pushes it over every ceiling. The 85 g tins (E and F) fit comfortably at any target.
The oil cap
Take build B — 200 g, CSI 464, Salsa jar, Eco wick, 4% wastage. Solve for the oil: maximum oil ₹/g = [(ceiling − wick − jar) ÷ 1.04 − wax] ÷ 16 g. The wax line is ₹93.36. Here is what each target allows, and how many of the 73 oils in stock at 1 kg fall under it at the kilo rate.
| Target kept | Materials ceiling | Max oil ₹/g | Max oil per candle | Oils in stock at 1 kg under the cap |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ₹120.00 | ₹196.50 | ₹3.85 | ₹61.54 | 11 |
| ₹150.00 | ₹166.50 | ₹2.04 | ₹32.70 | 0 |
| ₹180.00 | ₹136.50 | ₹0.24 | ₹3.85 | 0 |
At a ₹150 target the cap is ₹2.04 a gram, and no in-stock oil is that cheap even at the kilo rate — once the CSI 464 wax, wick and jar are paid for, there is not enough left for fragrance. At ₹120, the cap is ₹3.85 a gram, which admits 11 in-stock 1 kg oils, from Citrus Lemon (₹2.83), Citronella (₹2.89), British Rose and Eucalyptus Spearmint (₹3.07 each) through Fresh Strawberries (₹3.54), Royal Apricot (₹3.67) and Orchard Pear (₹3.74). That is why build C swaps the wax: Natural Soy Pearl frees about ₹15 a candle, which is enough to bring the ₹150 target back within reach of the cheapest oils.
Note that these caps use 1 kg rates. Bought at 100 g, most of these oils cost the same or slightly more per gram, but a few cost noticeably more: Honeydew Melon is ₹4.35 a gram at 100 g against ₹3.40 at 1 kg, one of the 24 oils where the kilo is at least 5% cheaper. Per-gram price breaks are rare across the catalogue, so check each oil's own ladder. The load question — whether 7% would do the job of 8% — belongs in the load-reduction post, and should be tested, not assumed.
Designing to the price
A smaller format is the other honest route to ₹399. The 85 g Golden Aluminium Tin costs ₹103.10 in materials with CSI 464 and Royal Apricot, leaving a lot of room at any target. But a ₹399 tin is ₹4.69 per gram of candle, against ₹2.00 for a ₹399 200 g jar. Customers notice size. Whether that positioning works is a product decision; the smaller affordable candle post looks at it from the range-planning side, and the cost-per-gram post explains why small candles cost more per gram to make.

A ₹399 launch, priced
One way to launch at ₹399 without cutting the product to the bone is two formats: a 200 g Salsa-jar candle (build C) and an 85 g tin (build E), so the customer can choose size. Here is the raw-material list for 50 jars and 36 tins, with 4% extra wax and oil. You need 9,568 g of Soy Pearl, 2,928 g of CSI 464, 832 g of Citrus Lemon and 255 g of Royal Apricot.
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Natural Soy Pearl Wax, 10 kg | ₹4,248.00 |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, 3 × 1 kg | ₹1,522.20 |
| Citrus Lemon Fragrance Oil, 1 kg | ₹2,832.00 |
| Royal Apricot Fragrance Oil, 3 × 100 g | ₹1,101.00 |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1, 100 | ₹590.00 |
| Wick stickers, 3 × 40 | ₹300.00 |
| 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar with golden lug cap, 50 | ₹1,475.00 |
| Golden Aluminium Tin 85 g, 3 × 12 | ₹1,080.00 |
| Premium Packing Tissue Paper, 100 sheets | ₹650.00 |
| Total | ₹13,798.20 |
| Labels and sleeves | your quotes |
That is ₹160.44 per candle across both formats, before labels and sleeves, and it leaves some wax and oil over. Royal Apricot is bought as three 100 g bottles because at ₹3.67 a gram the kilo is no cheaper and would leave most of it unused. If the tins sell, the next order can go to 1 kg. Wick stickers come in 40s, so 120 cover 86 candles with spares for test pours. Wick size for the tin and the Salsa jar should be confirmed in a burn test before the labels are printed.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. The builds that fit ₹399 best use our lowest-priced wax, oil and containers. We say so, and we say plainly that our White Matte jar with Luxury Soy Wax Chunks does not fit this price, because a candle that cannot make money at its price is no use to you or to us.
Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026. Container, wick, sticker and tissue prices are CSI's listed prices as recorded for this series (Eco wicks and White Matte jar verified 10 September 2026; Salsa jar, Golden Aluminium Tin, stickers and tissue from the 24–25 September pull). Ceilings, caps and totals are plain arithmetic, shown to two decimals.
Payment fee, shipping supplies, labour, breakage allowance, label, sleeve and the amounts kept per candle are examples to replace with your own figures; they are not CSI prices or market rates. Fill weights for the Salsa jar are not published, and wick sizing must be confirmed by burn test. For help building a ₹399 candle, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.
