A drop-in replacement is a wax your formulas cannot tell apart from the old one. Screen ceilings on paper, check fill and set on the bench, then pour three representative SKUs unchanged beside control candles in the old wax.
3 gates
paper · bench · carry-over · 18 replacement candles for ₹3,734.00 in CSI materials · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Which properties should I compare? The ones your formulas depend on: fragrance ceiling vs your highest load, temperatures, format; fill weight, set, tops, adhesion, colour; and wick fit, heat, throw and sweating with your actual SKUs.

Can I compare from data sheets? Only the paper gate. CSI 468's page gives 13%, 50–53°C melting point and 58–60°C pour; Natural Soy Pearl's gives none. Bench and carry-over properties must be measured.

How many SKUs do I test? Three representative ones: the bestseller, the highest-load formula and one from a different family or load — three candles each per wax, beside controls in the old wax.

What does it cost? ₹3,734.00 in CSI wax, jars and wicks for 18 replacement candles, using your own oil lot and old-wax controls. See the priced kit.
The short answer
Answer: Compare the properties your formulas depend on, in three gates: paper (ceiling, temperatures, format, packs), bench (fill weight, set, adhesion, colour) and carry-over (your SKUs burned beside control).
Why: Formulas are tuned to the old wax. The wax affects wick feed, oil binding and crystallisation, so a same-label wax can still shift results.
Test: Three SKUs × three candles × (old wax + each candidate), same oil lot, wick, jar and cure; per-SKU pass/fail. Objective protocol.
Three gates between your old wax and a drop-in replacement A property only counts as 'compared' when it has passed the gate that can actually measure it 1 · PAPER read, don't pour Fragrance ceiling vs your highest-load SKU Temperatures & format Pack sizes, price per kg Shelf life, documents 2 · BENCH unscented, your jar Fill weight at your line Melting & pour handling Set time & tops Glass adhesion Base colour vs old wax 3 · CARRY-OVER your formulas, unchanged 3 SKUs: bestseller, other family, highest load Same wick, jar, load, cure Burn, throw, sweat vs control in the old wax Fail at gate 1 = that SKU cannot carry over (e.g. a 12% formula in a wax rated to 10%). Fail at gate 3 = that SKU needs reformulating. Pass all three = the formula moves across without change.
The three gates a replacement wax passes before your formulas can move across unchanged. Paper properties are read; bench properties are measured with unscented wax in your jar; carry-over properties are measured by pouring your own SKUs beside control candles in the old wax. A SKU that fails a gate needs reformulating.
Straight answer
I want to switch soy wax suppliers without reformulating my entire collection — what properties should I compare between my existing and replacement wax?
Compare the properties your formulas depend on, in three gates — and only call it a drop-in when your own SKUs pass beside the old wax. Gate 1 is paper: the fragrance ceiling against your highest-load SKU, the handling temperatures, format, pack sizes and price. That alone rules candidates in or out — CSI 464's 10% ceiling cannot carry a 12% formula; CSI 468's page states 13%; Natural Soy Pearl publishes no ceiling, so ask first. Gate 2 is the bench: unscented wax in your jar for fill weight at your line, melt and pour handling, set, tops, adhesion and base colour against a retained puck of the old wax. Gate 3 is carry-over: pour three representative SKUs — bestseller, highest load, a different family — unchanged in each candidate beside control candles in the old wax, and score wick, pool, flame, jar heat, throw and sweating. A SKU that passes all three moves across; one that fails needs reformulating. CSI materials for the example's 18 replacement candles cost ₹3,734.00.
One line: match the wax to your formulas, not to the old wax's data sheet.
The carry-over test on this page takes three SKUs from your existing collection — the bestseller, a mid-load fruity and the highest-load formula — and pours each, unchanged, in two CSI candidates: Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 (rated up to 13%) and Natural Soy Pearl Wax (no ceiling published), beside control candles in your current wax. CSI wax, jars and wicks for the 18 replacement candles cost ₹3,734.00.

Compare the properties your formulas depend on — in three gates

You are not looking for a wax that is similar. You are looking for a wax your formulas cannot tell apart.

Switching suppliers without reformulating is a specific goal, and it changes what "compare" means. You do not need the new wax to match the old one on every property a data sheet could list. You need it to match on the properties your existing formulas depend on — so that every SKU's load, wick, jar, pour routine and cure still produce a candle that passes your standard. Those properties fall into three groups, and each group can only be compared one way.

Paper properties are read from the product page and documents: the fragrance ceiling (does it cover your highest-load SKU?), the handling temperatures, the format, the pack sizes and the price. Bench properties are measured with unscented wax in your own jar: fill weight at your fill line, how it melts and pours, how it sets, how its tops and glass adhesion look, its base colour next to the old wax. Carry-over properties can only be measured by pouring your actual formulas in the new wax beside control candles in the old: wick fit, melt pool, flame, jar heat, hot and cold throw, sweating and appearance through cure. A replacement that passes all three gates for a representative set of SKUs is one you can switch to without reformulating.

The example uses two CSI candidates because they make the paper gate vivid. CSI's product page for CSI 468 states a fragrance ceiling of 13%, a melting point of 50–53°C and a pour temperature of 58–60°C. The page for Natural Soy Pearl publishes none of these. And CSI 464 — rated up to 10% — fails the paper gate outright for any SKU poured above 10%, before a single candle is made.

The CSI principle
Match the wax to your formulas, not to the old wax's data sheet.
A property only counts as compared when it has been through the gate that measures it: paper, bench, or your own formulas burned beside a control.

The property comparison sheet

Fill this table in for your existing wax and every candidate. The CSI columns show what each product page states; your old wax's column is whatever its supplier published plus what you measure. Where a cell says "measure", no data sheet can answer it for your jar — CSI publishes no melt-behaviour, hardness, colour, adhesion or burn data for its waxes, and neither does it know your old wax.

The table also makes clear what you cannot compare. A melting point, where one is published, is a single number about a solid wax; it does not tell you how that wax carries your oils or feeds your wick. Why two waxes both called container soy can behave completely differently explains the mechanisms behind that, and why waxes with similar melt points still differ in throw, adhesion and wick needs goes further.

Keep a retained puck of your old wax before the last bag runs out
Pour 200–300 g of the old wax, unscented, into a labelled container and keep a finished candle of each bestseller. Once the old supplier's stock is gone, those are the only controls you will ever have — and every bench and carry-over comparison needs one.

Gate 1: the paper screen against your collection

Run the paper gate SKU by SKU, not wax by wax. The deciding line is almost always the fragrance ceiling against your highest-load formula. In the example collection below — three CSI oils, 200 g candles — the highest-load SKU runs at 12%. That single fact rules a candidate in or out for that SKU before any money is spent on testing.

Example collection · loads are the reader's formulas · ceilings from CSI product pages · CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026
Paper screen: can each formula move across unchanged?
SKU Load Oil + wax per 200 g Why it is in the test CSI 468 (13%) CSI 464 (10%) Soy Pearl
Japanese Cherry Blossom Fragrance Oil 8% 16 g + 184 g Bestseller Yes (13%) Yes Not published — ask CSI
Mango Coconut Fragrance Oil 10% 20 g + 180 g Fruity, mid load Yes (13%) Yes Not published — ask CSI
Blue Ocean Fragrance Oil 12% 24 g + 176 g Highest load in the range Yes (13%) No — above 10% Not published — ask CSI

Three outcomes are possible at this gate. A candidate whose ceiling covers every SKU goes on to the bench. A candidate that fails only the highest-load SKU can still replace the old wax for the rest of the range — but that SKU will need reformulating, so the switch is no longer "without reformulating". And a candidate with no published ceiling, like Natural Soy Pearl here, has to be asked: message CSI on WhatsApp for the wax maker's stated maximum before planning a 12% formula in it. A reader's own supplier figure of "12%" for the old wax is that supplier's figure; it does not transfer.

The mistake: choosing the replacement on price, then discovering the ceiling. The cheaper wax is ordered in bulk, and the 12% bestseller cannot be poured in it at all. Fix: list every SKU's load first and run the paper gate before you request a single sample. It takes ten minutes and it removes the most expensive surprise.

Why carry-over has to be tested, not assumed

Your formulas were tuned to your old wax. Every number on the batch sheet assumes it.

Each of your approved formulas is a set of choices that worked together in the old wax: a wick that fed the flame the right amount of melted fuel, a load the wax held through cure, a pour temperature that gave clean tops in your jar. In general candle-making practice, the wax affects every one of those: how readily it melts and how fluid the pool is, how it crystallises as it sets and cures, how it holds and releases fragrance. Two waxes can share a label and a price band and still shift those relationships enough to change a wick result or a summer shelf. These are mechanisms commonly described, not CSI measurements.

That is why the carry-over gate pours formulas, not just wax. It also explains the choice of SKUs. The bestseller is in because it carries the most revenue. The highest-load formula is in because it stresses the wax's ability to hold oil. The fruity mid-load formula is in because it is a different oil family and a different load, so the three together sample the range rather than repeat one corner of it. If your collection has a gourmand or a very expensive oil, swap it in; how many fragrance families to test covers that choice in depth.

Carry-over results are per SKU. If two pass and one fails, the replacement is a drop-in for two SKUs and a reformulation for the third. That is still a useful answer; it tells you exactly how much work the switch really is. When one oil fails and others pass shows how to tell an oil problem from a wax problem in that third SKU.

Gates 2 and 3, candle by candle

1
Bench: one unscented candle per wax, plus your old waxSame jar, same fill line, your usual routine (CSI 468's page states pour at 58–60°C; Soy Pearl's page publishes no temperature — ask CSI). Weigh each at the fill line, note set time, tops, adhesion and colour beside the old wax puck.
2
Correct the fill weight if it movesIf the same fill line gives, say, 196 g instead of 200 g (an example), your formula's grams of oil and wax must be recalculated for the true weight — otherwise the load is no longer the one you approved.
3
Carry-over: pour three SKUs × three candles × three waxesOld wax (control), CSI 468 and Natural Soy Pearl, each SKU at its own approved load, wick, jar and routine. 3 candles per cell: two burned, one shelf. That is 18 candles in CSI wax and 9 controls.
4
Same oil lot for all three waxesTake every SKU's oil from the lot you already hold, so the only difference between cells is the wax.
5
Cure everything togetherYour usual cure, identical for all three waxes, on the same shelf.
6
Burn each SKU's three waxes together3–4 hour cycles with full cool-down (a commonly used cycle — label it yours), one candle per wax to end of life. Score against the control in the old wax, line by line.
7
Decide per SKU, then per waxA wax is a drop-in replacement only for the SKUs that passed every line without a change to their formula.
Copy per SKU · one column per wax · the control column is your old wax
Carry-over scoring sheet
Line Old wax (control) CSI 468 Soy Pearl Pass rule
Fill weight at your line ___ g ___ g ___ g Formula recalculated if different
Full-pool time / depth ___ / ___ ___ / ___ ___ / ___ Within your tolerance of control

Cold throw 0–5 at your cure ___ ___ ___ Equal or better
Sweating / frosting at 14 days ___ ___ ___ No worse than control
Tops, adhesion, colour ___ ___ ___ Within your cosmetic standard
Carries over unchanged? — ___ ___ All lines, no formula change

The control column is essential. Without it you are comparing the new wax with your memory of the old one, and memory always flatters the familiar candle. CSI publishes no numeric flame-height or jar-temperature limit, and this page invents none; the safety rule is no worse than your approved control, within your jar supplier's guidance and the recognised candle fire-safety standard you work to. The objective comparison protocol covers blinding and replicates.

What the switch costs and saves

Price both sides. With an example volume of 400 candles a month across the three SKUs (average 180.0 g of wax per candle, so 72.00 kg a month) and an example existing price of ₹550.00/kg — replace both with your own — the monthly wax bill compares like this at CSI's 10 kg rates.

Example volume and existing price are the reader's to replace · CSI wax at 10 kg rates · CSI live pricing, re-checked 1 October 2026
Monthly wax cost for 400 candles
Wax Price per kg 72.00 kg a month Difference vs existing
Your existing wax (example) ₹550.00 ₹39,600.00 —
Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 ₹637.00 ₹45,864.00 ₹6,264.00
Natural Soy Pearl Wax ₹424.80 ₹30,585.60 -₹9,014.40

Against that, the carry-over test costs ₹3,734.00 in CSI wax, jars and wicks (plus your own oil and control candles). If a SKU fails carry-over, reformulating it is a separate cost: a six-candle wick bracket for the 12% Blue Ocean formula in CSI 468, for example, uses about ₹1,880.64 of materials at small-pack prices. The point of the gates is to know which of those two bills you are paying before you place the bulk order, not after. What to retest when a supplier is ₹60 a kilo cheaper and the true commercial cost of a wax cover the economics in more depth.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. If you are switching to CSI, we would like you to switch every SKU at once. But the honest result of this test may be that only some of your formulas carry over — or that the wax your formulas need is not the cheapest one we list. CSI 468 costs more per kilo than your example existing price; Natural Soy Pearl costs less but publishes no ceiling. If neither carries your bestseller over unchanged, keep the old wax for that SKU while you reformulate, or keep the old supplier altogether.

Result Meaning What you do and buy
All SKUs pass all three gates in one candidate A true drop-in for your collection Pilot one batch per SKU, then switch; buy the production bag
Some SKUs pass, some fail gate 3 Partial drop-in Switch the passing SKUs; reformulate the rest (5416) or keep the old wax for them
The highest-load SKU fails gate 1 Ceiling too low for that formula Choose a candidate whose ceiling covers it, or reformulate that SKU

If CSI 468 carries all three SKUs over, the production need at the example volume is 72.00 kg a month: 7 × 10 kg + 2 × 1 kg (₹45,890.00) covers it — the 10 kg and 5 kg bags are ₹637.00/kg, the 1 kg bag ₹650.00/kg. If Natural Soy Pearl carries them over and CSI confirms a ceiling that covers 12%, 7 × 10 kg + 2 × 1 kg (₹30,636.00) covers the month at ₹424.80/kg; the 50 kg bag is the same rate, so it only makes sense if you have the storage and the stock is confirmed on WhatsApp. Larger regular quantities are quoted on WhatsApp; no volume discount figure is published. The qualification test is where the passed SKUs and the new wax are written into your approved-material record.

Switch in the same order you tested
Move the SKUs across one at a time, bestseller last if its result was the closest call. Keep the old wax and a few control candles until every switched SKU has completed one production batch and a burn from that batch. Qualifying a second supplier without changing your bestsellers is the long-term version of this.
Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026. A supplier switch in the middle of festive production is the riskiest timing there is; running the three gates now gives you either a clean switch before the peak or a clear reason to wait until after it. Send us your SKU list with loads on WhatsApp and we will run the paper gate with you and price the carry-over kit. Container soy wax bags go up to 10 kg (Natural Soy Pearl to 50 kg, limited stock); larger quantities are quoted on WhatsApp and no volume discount figure is published.

Considering CSI's other waxes? Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (up to 13%) passes the paper gate for a 12% SKU; Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 (up to 10%) does not, but can still carry any SKU at 10% or below. Premium Coconut Soy Wax and Soy Butter Wax publish no ceiling, and Soy Butter's page describes a blend of soy pellets, soy chunks and beeswax — so it is not a like-for-like soy replacement. The full range is in Candle Wax.
Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. If you are considering switching to us, we would rather you found out on twenty-seven candles that one SKU needs reformulating than on a production order. We publish no burn, adhesion, colour or hardness data for our waxes, and we know nothing about your old one, so this page quotes our product pages exactly and gives you the test that decides.

Wax prices are CSI live pricing, re-checked 1 October 2026 (unchanged from the 24–25 September pull); oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026. Jar and wick prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026. Candle splits, pack rounding and monthly cost comparisons are plain arithmetic.

The example SKUs and loads, the 400-candle month, the ₹550.00/kg existing price, the fill-weight example, three candles per cell, the 5% pour loss and burn cycles are labelled examples and working practices. Frequently asked questions

Can I switch soy wax without changing my wicks?
Only if your formulas pass a side-by-side burn against control candles in the old wax. Start with your current wick — it often works — but prove it per SKU before switching.
What should I compare when changing soy wax supplier?
Fragrance ceiling against your highest load, temperatures and format on paper; fill weight, set, adhesion and colour on the bench; and burn, throw and sweating with your actual SKUs beside the old wax.
Is a higher fragrance load wax better for replacing my old wax?
Only in the sense that its stated ceiling must cover your highest-load formula. CSI 468 and Chunks are rated up to 13%, CSI 464 up to 10%; a higher ceiling is not evidence of better throw.
How many candles to test a new soy wax supplier?
A working minimum of three per SKU per wax, on three representative SKUs, plus controls in the old wax — 18 candles for two candidates in the example.
Why does my candle weigh less with a new wax at the same fill line?
Waxes can settle to slightly different weights at the same line. Weigh one pour in the new wax and recalculate the oil and wax grams so the load stays the one you approved.
What if the new wax works for some candles but not others?
Switch the SKUs that passed and reformulate or keep the old wax for the rest. The single-oil diagnostic helps decide whether the failing SKU's problem is the oil or the wax.
