Change Control · Jar
Every wick-performance and container-heat line is repeated from one burn set taken to the end of the candle. Storage chemistry stays. What decides how worried to be is geometry — measure both jars first, because a slightly wider jar can have a much bigger pool.

more pool area from a 7.0 → 7.5 cm internal diameter (illustrative) · π × d² ÷ 4 · Stage 1 kit ₹755.20 · prices September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Which tests confirm wick performance? Pool reach to the glass and time to full pool, depth and tunnelling, flame, mushrooming, soot, consumption and hot throw — every cycle, three candidate-jar candles against three in your current jar.

Which confirm container heat? Jar-side heat at three heights every cycle and under the base near the end, burned to the end of usable wax. No worse than the current jar at any height or cycle.

What can I keep? 3 lines: the oil's documents, the wax ceiling, and sweating and frosting — wax–oil chemistry the jar does not change. Lid-off cold throw gets a CONFIRM.

What does the test cost? ₹755.20 in the worked example (Salsa jars plus a 1 g scale), ₹94.40 more if a second wick is needed. Payback on the cheaper jar: 74 candles at the 5-pack price. See the kit.
The short answer
Measure: Nine points: ID at fill line and near base, wax height, wall, base, opening, finish, fill weight, lid fit.
Geometry: Pool area = π × d² ÷ 4. 7.0 → 7.5 cm (illustrative) is +14.8% area and -12.9% column height at the same volume.
Repeat: All wick and heat lines to end of life, plus fill weight and glass adhesion. New: appearance through the glass, label and lid fit. Range depth: the hub.
Measure both jars before you pour: six numbers decide the retest Illustrative dimensions only — 7.0 cm vs 7.5 cm internal diameter · not the measurements of any CSI jar CURRENT JAR your approved jar CANDIDATE JAR wider at the top, tapers ① ID at fill line ① ID at fill line ② ID low ② ID low ③ wax height ④ wall ⑤ base ⑥ fill weight POOL AREA π × d² ÷ 4 7.0 cm → 38.48 cm² 7.5 cm → 44.18 cm² +14.8% area same wax volume: -12.9% column height 7.1% wider is not a 7.1% change
The six numbers to take from both jars before pouring: internal diameter at the fill line and near the base, wax height, wall and base thickness, and fill weight. The side panel shows why diameter matters most — pool area grows with the square of the diameter. All dimensions are illustrative; CSI publishes no internal diameters, wall or base thickness for its jars.
Straight answer
If I change only the jar, which tests should be repeated to confirm wick performance and container heat remain acceptable?
Repeat every wick-performance and heat line, from one burn set taken to the end of the candle. For the wick: pool reach to the glass and time to full pool, pool depth and tunnelling, flame height, mushrooming, soot, consumption rate and hot throw. For heat: jar-side heat at the top, middle and lower third every cycle, heat under the base near the end, how much wax is left and how the candle goes out. Three candles in the new jar against three in your current approved jar, same wax, oil, load and wick, is a sensible working set. Also repeat fill weight and glass adhesion, and add the new jar's appearance, label and lid fit. The storage chemistry — sweating and frosting — stays valid, because the jar is not part of it. Before any of that, measure both jars: pool area is π × d² ÷ 4, so an illustrative move from 7.0 to 7.5 cm internal diameter is 14.8% more area for the same wick to melt. Acceptance is simple: no worse than the current jar on any safety line, at any height, in any cycle.
One line: a jar change is geometry — measure it, compute the pool, then burn to the end and watch the heat.
Testing CSI's 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar as your new container? Stage 1 needs 4 candidate jars against your current jars — 2 packs of 5 at ₹200.60 — and a scale that reads to 1 g: ₹755.20. Stage 2, only if your current wick cannot reach the new jar's edges, adds ₹94.40.

Measure first: the jar comparison sheet

A jar change is a geometry change. Put numbers on the geometry before you light anything.

When only the jar changes, the wax, the fragrance oil and the wick are the same, and so is their chemistry. What changes is the space the candle burns in: how wide the pool can spread, how deep the wax sits, how the glass sheds heat, what the base does at the end. The fastest way to decide how much retesting you need is to measure both jars side by side before a test candle is poured. CSI does not publish internal diameters, glass or base thickness, heights or taper for its jars — only two fills are published (the Golden Aluminium Tin at 85 g and the Heart Cutout Velvet Jar at 50 g wax capacity) — so these are your measurements.

Jar change · copy this sheet · fill in both jars before pouring
The nine measurements, how to take them, and what each one triggers
Measurement How to take it Old New Triggers
Internal diameter at the fill line Calipers or a ruler across the inside, at the height the wax surface sits Melt-pool reach, wick size, tunnelling
Internal diameter near the base Measure low inside the jar, or from a water-filled profile Late-burn pool and heat if the jar tapers
Height of wax column at your fill weight Pour your label weight and measure wax depth Number of burns, where end-of-life falls
Glass wall thickness Calipers at the rim How heat leaves the jar; how the side feels
Base thickness Calipers or a depth gauge from the inside floor End-of-life heat under the tab
Opening diameter vs body diameter Rim inside vs widest inside Airflow, flame behaviour, cold-throw release
Glass finish and colour Clear, frosted, matte-coated, coloured How the candle looks; how heat is felt
Fill weight at your fill line Three weighed pours Label net weight; whether it is the same candle at all
Lid or cap fit Lid on, check seal Cold throw retention in storage, dust, transit

Three of the nine measurements matter most for the title's two concerns. Diameter at the fill line governs whether your wick can still bring the pool to the edge. Wall and base thickness and glass finish govern how the jar handles heat. The rest tell you whether this is still the same product — if the new jar cannot hold your label weight at a sensible fill line, you are not changing a jar, you are launching a new SKU, and the same-200-g, wider-and-shorter post walks through that trade-off.

The CSI principle
Diameter changes are squared. Measure, compute the area, then decide.
Pool area is π × d² ÷ 4. A jar that looks a little wider can have a pool that is noticeably bigger — and the wick has to fill all of it.

Geometry: why small diameter changes are not small

The wick has one job in a container: melt the wax out to the glass within a burn cycle without overheating anything. The area it must melt is the circle at the wax surface, π × d² ÷ 4, so it grows with the square of the diameter. Using illustrative numbers — not the dimensions of any CSI jar — a move from a 7.0 cm to a 7.5 cm internal diameter is 7.1% wider but gives 14.8% more pool area (38.48 cm² to 44.18 cm²). And if the candle weight stays the same, the wax column gets 12.9% shorter, because the same volume is spread over the larger area. The same maths runs in reverse for a narrower jar.

Geometry only · illustrative diameters · straight-sided approximation · compute your own from the comparison sheet
Pool area and column height for some diameter changes
Internal diameter Pool area (π × d² ÷ 4) Area change Column height at equal volume
7.0 → 7.2 cm 38.48 → 40.72 cm² +5.80% -5.48%
7.0 → 7.5 cm 38.48 → 44.18 cm² +14.80% -12.89%
7.0 → 6.6 cm 38.48 → 34.21 cm² -11.10% +12.49%
6.0 → 6.5 cm 28.27 → 33.18 cm² +17.36% -14.79%
8.0 → 8.5 cm 50.27 → 56.75 cm² +12.89% -11.42%

Two things follow. First, even the smallest change in that table — 7.0 to 7.2 cm, 5.8% more area — is enough that you cannot assume the old wick still reaches the edge; the 7.6-to-7.9 cm post works a real-world-sized example of the same question. Second, the column-height change moves where end-of-life falls and how many burn cycles the candle has. Neither is a reason to panic; both are reasons to burn test. What geometry cannot tell you is the answer — CSI publishes no wick-size chart per diameter, and none would be reliable across waxes and oils anyway.

The comparison that misleads. "Same 200 ml, so same candle." A jar's millilitre rating is its brim volume, not a fill weight, and two 200 ml jars can have quite different diameters and heights. A taller, narrower 200 ml jar and a shorter, wider one produce different pools, different burn counts and different end-of-life heat. Compare the nine measurements, not the label on the carton.

The retest matrix for a jar-only change

With the measurements in hand, sort your test file. The jar is not part of the wax–oil chemistry, so the storage chemistry lines stay. It is very much part of how the candle burns, looks and is packed, so those lines are repeated, and a jar brings some genuinely new questions — appearance through different glass, label and lid fit.

Jar changed · wax, oil and wick identical · KEEP / CONFIRM / REPEAT / NEW
Sixteen lines: 3 keep, 1 confirm, 9 repeat, 3 new
Result line Word Why
Oil MSDS and IFRA certificate KEEP Unchanged oil
Wax maker's stated fragrance maximum KEEP Unchanged wax
Sweating and frosting on the wax surface KEEP Wax–oil chemistry; the jar does not change it
Cold throw with the lid off CONFIRM A wider opening exposes more surface; sniff side by side
Cold throw retention with the lid on NEW Only if the new jar comes with a cap, as the Salsa jar does
Fill weight and label net weight REPEAT Different volume at the same fill line
Glass adhesion, wet spots, pull-away REPEAT Glass surface and cooling differ between jars
Appearance through the glass NEW Frosted, clear or coloured glass shows the wax differently
Label and lid fit NEW Physical packaging checks
Time to full melt pool, pool reach to the edge REPEAT Pool area scales with diameter squared
Pool depth and tunnelling REPEAT Diameter and taper change the pool
Flame height, mushrooming, soot REPEAT Airflow and pool size change fuel draw
Jar-side heat through the burn REPEAT Glass wall, finish and diameter
Hot throw in your fixed room REPEAT Pool area drives release
Consumption (g per hour) REPEAT Follows pool size and flame
End-of-life heat and wax left REPEAT Base thickness and lower diameter

The title asks specifically which tests confirm that wick performance and container heat remain acceptable. In the matrix, those are the REPEAT lines from time to full pool down to end-of-life: pool reach and time, depth and tunnelling, flame, mushrooming and soot, jar-side heat through the burn, hot throw, consumption, and end-of-life heat with wax left behind. They come from one burn set. The storage-side lines are handled by a single pair of unlit candles.

Taper changes the answer halfway down
If the new jar narrows toward the base, a wick that is right at the top can be too strong lower down, as the pool meets less area. That is why the burn set goes to the end, and why the comparison sheet asks for a second diameter near the base. The narrowing-jar post covers this in depth, and the thick-base post covers end-of-life heat.

The test: one burn set, one appearance pair

Wick performance and container heat are not two tests. They are two columns on the same burn sheet.
1
Measure and weighFill in the comparison sheet for both jars. Pour three of each to your fill line and weigh them. Decide the fill weight for the candidate jar — if it cannot hold your label weight sensibly, stop and treat it as a new SKU.
2
Pour the burn set and the appearance pair3 candidate-jar and 3 current-jar candles to burn; 1 + 1 unlit for adhesion, appearance, label and lid. Same wax batch, oil, load, wick and centring. Label bases.
3
Cure togetherCheck glass adhesion and appearance at 48 hours and 7 days (labelled examples). Sniff lid-off cold throw side by side at 7 days; if the new jar has a cap, check lid-on retention at your storage checkpoint.
4
Burn to the end in cycles of about 3–4 hoursA commonly used cycle with full cool-down. Each cycle: weigh, time to full pool, pool reach (does it touch the glass all round?), depth, flame, mushrooming, soot, jar-side feel at the same points each time, hot throw.
5
Watch the lower third closelyHeat at the side and under the base, how the flame behaves as the pool meets the lower diameter, how much wax is left and how the candle goes out.
6
Only if the pool will not reach the edge: Stage 2If the current wick leaves a ring of unmelted wax in the wider jar after the first few cycles, pour 3 more candidate-jar candles with the other wick you are considering and repeat. That is a second change — log it.

Heat is recorded at the same three heights on every jar, every cycle, so that a hotter lower third on the candidate shows up clearly. If you use a surface thermometer, write the reading; if not, a consistent touch check at the end of each cycle (back of the fingers, same spot) is still useful as a comparison, never as an absolute. CSI publishes no numeric jar-temperature or flame-height limit. Acceptance is no worse than the current approved jar on every safety line, within the new jar supplier's guidance and the recognised fire-safety standard you work to (ASTM F2417 is commonly cited). A frosted or matte finish changes how heat feels in the hand and how the candle looks — the frosted-glass post covers that specifically.

The priced kit, and whether the change pays

The worked example is a candle currently in a White Matte Glass Jar being moved to CSI's 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar with golden lug cap, poured in Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 with Fresh Strawberries Fragrance Oil at 8%. Neither jar's fill weight is published; this page uses an illustrative 170 g fill in the Salsa jar (13.6 g oil, 156.4 g wax) — weigh your own, because the candle you sell has to match its label. Wax, oil, wick and the control jars come from your stock: the new-jar candles need 625.6 g of wax and 54.4 g of oil.

Stage 1 is ₹755.20, or ₹401.20 if you already own a 1 g scale. Now the question most jar changes are really about: does it pay? The White Matte jar is ₹70.80 each (₹354.00 for 5). The Salsa jar is ₹40.12 each in a 5-pack, ₹29.50 in a 50-pack and ₹29.50 in a 100-pack. So the jar saving is ₹30.68 per candle at the smallest pack and ₹41.30 at 100. Add an example ₹1,500.00 for your own time on the test (replace it with your figure) and the one-off revalidation is ₹2,255.20. Payback is revalidation ÷ saving: 74 candles at the 5-pack price, 55 at the 100-pack. Those numbers only hold if the smaller illustrative fill is acceptable to your customers — a 170 g candle is not a 200 g candle, and pricing it as one would be dishonest.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. A cheaper jar is the easiest saving to see and one of the easiest to regret, because a jar change reopens every burn and heat line on every SKU that uses it. If your current jar is fine and you only save a few rupees, keep it. If the saving is real, test on one SKU first and let the hub's bracketing decide how many others need the full burn set.
Diwali is on 8 November 2026. Jar stock-outs before the festive season push makers into last-minute substitutions. If your jar is running short, send us your current jar's measurements on WhatsApp and we will tell you which CSI jars are in stock to measure against. Decision rule · jar change
What the scores mean
Result Condition Next step
Pass Pool reaches the glass within the same number of cycles or fewer; no safety line worse at any height or cycle; appearance, label and lid acceptable Release; update the SKU specification with the jar, its measurements and the fill weight
Wick change needed Safety lines fine but the pool does not reach the edge Stage 2 with another wick — a second change on the record
Escalate Upper burns fine, lower third hotter or wax left differs Full-life result governs; see the taller-jar post for later-stage heat
Fail Any safety line worse than the current jar Do not release; the jar is not a like-for-like substitute

Record the jar on the specification by its measurements, not just its name. Two jars sold under the same name by different suppliers — or even the same supplier across moulds — can differ, and the comparison sheet is what lets a future reorder be checked in two minutes. Keep one empty jar from the approved order as a physical reference beside the retained candle. The 1,000-candle jar post shows how to use those reference measurements when a substitution is forced at short notice, and the out-of-stock jar post covers choosing the alternative that needs the least redevelopment.

Measure the jar before you burn the candle. Most of the answer is in the calipers.
— CandleMakingSuppliesIndia

For the other single-component changes, compare how different the pattern is. A wax change voids storage chemistry and burn results together. A fragrance change keeps jar and wax data but repeats every candle result. A wick change keeps storage and repeats combustion. A jar change keeps storage chemistry, repeats combustion and heat, and adds packaging questions no other change asks. Knowing which pattern you are in is most of change control.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. The cheaper jar in the worked example is ours, and the page still tells you to keep your current jar if the saving is small — a jar change reopens every burn and heat line on every SKU that uses it.

The Salsa jar and oil and wax prices were pulled on 24–25 September 2026 (CSI live pricing); the White Matte jar and scale were verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026, and the wick packs rechecked on 25 September 2026. Pool areas, column heights, per-jar prices and payback are plain arithmetic.

Every jar dimension on this page is illustrative — CSI publishes no internal diameters, wall or base thickness, heights, taper, or fill weights for these jars. The 170 g fill, the ₹1,500.00 time figure, the three-plus-three set and the checkpoints are labelled assumptions. For jar stock or bulk quotes, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to retest my wick if I change candle jars?
Yes. The pool the wick must melt depends on the jar's internal diameter, and area grows with its square. Repeat pool reach, depth, flame, soot, consumption and end-of-life against a control in your current jar.
How do I test container heat for a new candle jar?
Burn three candles in the new jar and three in the old to the end of usable wax, checking the side at three heights and under the base each cycle. No worse than the old jar on any safety line is the pass condition.
Does a wider jar need a bigger wick?
It may. A wider jar has a larger pool — 7.0 to 7.5 cm (illustrative) is 14.8% more area — so the old wick may not reach the edge. CSI publishes no wick-size chart per diameter; test it.
Is a 200 ml jar the same as a 200 g candle?
No. 200 ml is brim volume. Wax is lighter than water and nobody fills to the brim, so weigh your own fill — and keep the label weight true.
Do I need to repeat storage tests after a jar change?
Not the wax–oil chemistry — sweating and frosting stay. Do repeat glass adhesion and check appearance through the new glass, label and lid fit with one unlit pair.
Is a thicker glass jar safer?
Not automatically. Thicker glass changes how heat leaves the jar and how it feels, and a thicker base changes end-of-life heat. The thicker-glass post treats it as a new candle system.
