₹8,402.48
CSI materials for a tier-2 retest of four fragrances — 30 candles, both waxes, oils, wicks and IPA · October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Do I retest the wick? Yes. Melt-pool behaviour is a wax property. CONFIRM on every oil after a small or large move; REPEAT on the hardest oil after a large one.

Do I retest the fragrances? Their performance in the wax, yes (throw, sweating, cure). Their choice, character and documents, no — those stay KEEP.

How do I know how much to retest? Size the change first: a small shift, a large shift, or a new wax. See the three tiers.

What does it cost? ₹8,402.48 for a large move across four oils in this example; ₹4,545.24 for a small one.
The short answer
Answer: Yes, partly. A blend change re-opens everything the wax affects — wick, throw in the wax, cure, sweating, tops and adhesion — and leaves everything only the oil decides — fragrance choice, character, documents — as KEEP.
Why: Melt pool, fragrance release, cure and contraction are commonly described as properties of the wax mixture; change the mixture and old results describe the old candle.
Method: Write a change record, size the change in tiers, sort results with KEEP / CONFIRM / REPEAT / NEW, pour new and old blends side by side for every oil, photograph for adhesion first, then burn; wick ladder on the hardest oil for a large move.
How far did the blend move? The answer sets the retest Tiers are an example house rule for change size — not an industry standard 0% 10% 20% 30% 40% 50% 60% CSI 468 share of the wax portion old 90:10 new 70:30 Tier 1 · small move same two waxes, ≤10 points Wick: CONFIRM Load & throw: CONFIRM (2 oils) Adhesion: REPEAT Fragrance choice: KEEP Tier 2 · large move same two waxes, >10 points Wick: CONFIRM all oils; REPEAT on the hardest oil Load & throw: CONFIRM all oils Adhesion, cycle: REPEAT Tier 3 · new wax in it new partner or base Wick: REPEAT every oil Load & throw: REPEAT Cure, frosting, heat: REPEAT Treat it as a new wax This example moves 20 points (90:10 → 70:30) — tier 2. Fragrance choice and oil documents stay KEEP in every tier.
The example blend moves from 90:10 to 70:30 CSI 464 : CSI 468 — a 20-point shift in the partner's share, tier 2 on the example house rule. Each tier sets which earlier results are KEEP, CONFIRM or REPEAT. Fragrance choice and oil documents stay KEEP in every tier; the wick and fragrance performance in the wax do not.
Straight answer
If I modify my wax blend to improve adhesion, do I need to repeat wick and fragrance testing?
Yes for the wick, partly for the fragrance — and how much depends on how far the blend moved. A blend change reaches everything the wax affects: melt pool and wick behaviour, fragrance release, cure, sweating, tops and adhesion. It cannot reach what only the oil decides: the fragrance choice, its character and its MSDS / IFRA documents, which stay KEEP. Size the change first — in the example, Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 : Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 moved from 90:10 to 70:30, a 20-point shift. Then pour new and old blends side by side for every oil, photograph for adhesion before any burn, and CONFIRM wick and throw; for a large move, REPEAT the wick on your hardest oil with a three-wick ladder. In CSI's Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram), four fragrances cost ₹8,402.48 in CSI materials; a small move about ₹4,545.24.
One line: size the change, sort KEEP / CONFIRM / REPEAT / NEW, retest only what the wax reaches.
Yes — some of it. How much depends on how far the blend moved. This page sorts every earlier result into KEEP, CONFIRM, REPEAT or NEW by the size of the change, and prices the retest for a range of four fragrances in CSI's Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram): ₹8,402.48 in CSI materials for a large move, or ₹4,545.24 for a small one.
See the Clear 150 g jar

Yes for the wick, partly for the fragrance — scaled to the size of the change

You changed the wax. Everything the wax touches has to be shown again; everything only the oil decides can stay.

The candle that now spots less is, strictly, a new candle. The melt pool, the way fragrance is released from it, the cure, the surface and the way the wax holds oil are all commonly described as properties of the wax mixture. Change the mixture and those results belong to the old candle, not the new one. What does not change is everything that belongs to the oil alone: its smell character, its documents, its price and the fact that you chose it. So the honest answer is not "retest everything" and not "nothing changed but the adhesion"; it is a sorted list, and the sorting depends on how big the change was.

The worked example is a maker whose container candle is a blend of Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 and Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468, previously 90:10 by weight of the wax portion. To improve adhesion in CSI's Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram) they moved to 70:30. At 8% in a 150 g candle, the wax portion is 138 g: the old blend was 124.2 g of CSI 464 and 13.8 g of CSI 468; the new one is 96.6 g and 41.4 g. They sell four fragrances — Lavender, Jasmine, Cinnamon Vanilla, Blue Ocean — all at 8%. That is a 20-point move of the partner wax, and it sits in tier 2 of the example house rule below.

The single cheapest step is the one most makers skip: write down, before pouring anything, exactly what changed and by how much. A ratio, a lot, a supplier, a pour temperature. The change record decides the size of the retest, and without it you will either repeat more than you need or, worse, less. The blend-ladder post covers choosing the blend; this page starts once you have chosen it.

The CSI principle
Retest what the change can reach. Keep what it cannot.
A wax change reaches the pool, the release, the cure and the glass. It cannot reach the oil's character or its paperwork.

Size the change first: three example tiers

There is no industry rule for how big a blend change has to be before a test repeats; the tiers below are an example house rule, labelled as such, that you can adopt or move. The logic is that a small shift between the same two waxes is likely to move results a little, so a short side-by-side check against the old blend (CONFIRM) is enough for most lines; a large shift may move them a lot, so the lines most sensitive to the wax repeat in full; and a new wax in the mix is a new wax.

Example house rule · shift = change in the partner wax's share of the wax portion · adjust the cut-offs to your own risk
Three tiers of blend change
Tier What changed Example Retest scope
1 · Small move Same two waxes, partner share moves 10 points or less 90:10 → 80:20 CONFIRM wick on every oil; CONFIRM throw on two oils; REPEAT adhesion
2 · Large move Same two waxes, partner share moves more than 10 points 90:10 → 70:30 (this example) CONFIRM wick and throw on every oil; REPEAT the wick on the hardest oil; REPEAT adhesion and cycling
3 · New wax in the blend A different partner, a different base, or a single wax replacing the blend 464 + 468 → Chunks + 468 REPEAT wick, load, throw, cure and adhesion on every oil — a new wax

Two things push a change up a tier whatever its size: an oil that has been difficult before — one that needed a different wick, sweated at your load or gave weak throw — and a jar family you have not tested the blend in. Whether shape belongs in qualification covers the second. The tiers are about the wax; the hardest oil and the hardest jar are where any tier's checks should start.

The retest matrix

KEEP means the result stays valid; CONFIRM means a short side-by-side check against the old blend — three candles each, one oil, a few burn cycles — and the result stands if the new blend is no worse; REPEAT means the full original test, run again; NEW means a test you never needed before. The vocabulary is the same one used across CSI's change-control guidance, so your records stay comparable.

KEEP · CONFIRM · REPEAT · NEW · general candle-making knowledge applied to a blend change · your records decide the detail
What a blend change re-opens, by tier
Earlier result Tier 1 Tier 2 Tier 3 Why
Fragrance choice, smell character, oil documents (MSDS / IFRA) KEEP KEEP KEEP Depend on the oil, not the wax
Fragrance load (8%) still inside every published ceiling KEEP KEEP CONFIRM CSI 464 states 10%, CSI 468 13%; no blend ceiling is published
Glass adhesion and wet spots REPEAT REPEAT REPEAT The reason for the change — it must be shown
Wick: pool width, depth, flame, soot, jar warmth CONFIRM CONFIRM all oils; REPEAT on the hardest REPEAT Melt-pool behaviour is a wax property
Hot throw at your standard checkpoints CONFIRM (lead + hardest oil) CONFIRM every oil REPEAT Wax affects release; the oil did not change
Cure timing KEEP CONFIRM REPEAT Read throw at the same cure checkpoints as before
Sweating or oily surface at your load KEEP CONFIRM REPEAT Oil retention can change with the wax mix
Tops, frosting, sinkholes CONFIRM CONFIRM REPEAT Score on the same jars as adhesion
Heat and courier cycling KEEP REPEAT REPEAT A cycle re-checks adhesion too
Pour temperature KEEP CONFIRM NEW No blend temperature is published; record yours

Read the fragrance rows carefully, because "fragrance testing" means two different things. Choosing the fragrance — does it smell right, does it suit the brand, are its documents in order — depends only on the oil and stays KEEP in every tier. Testing the fragrance in the wax — does it release well at 8%, does the candle sweat, does the throw hold at your cure checkpoint — depends on the wax and re-opens. You do not have to re-choose your four fragrances. You do have to show that each still performs in the new blend.

The common mistake: retesting only the oil that prompted the change. A maker shifts the blend to fix wet spots in one fragrance, confirms that fragrance, and releases the new blend across the whole range. Two months later another fragrance starts sweating at 8% in the new mix. Fix: a blend change applies to every candle made with that blend, so every oil gets at least a CONFIRM. The fragrance that prompted the change gets no special treatment; the hardest one does.

The minimum tier-2 plan, candle by candle

Every CONFIRM needs a control poured the same day. A retained sample from last year is a memory, not a control.

For each oil, pour 3 candles in the new blend and 3 in the old blend on the same day, from the same oil bottle, with the same wick, cleaning, pour method and rack. Photograph all of them for adhesion first, then burn them in your standard protocol. For the hardest oil — here Cinnamon Vanilla, flagged by the maker's own records as the one that needed the most wick work before — add a wick ladder in the new blend: your current wick and two neighbouring wicks from your range, 3 candles each. CSI publishes no wick size for the 150 g jar, so the neighbours are yours to choose; the kit prices Eco Thick C2 and Cotton Braided 10-packs only as examples.

1
Write the change recordOld blend 90:10, new 70:30, wax lots, date, reason (adhesion), tier 2. List every result the matrix marks CONFIRM, REPEAT or NEW.
2
Pour the pairs4 oils × (3 new + 3 old) = 24 candles, plus 6 wick-ladder candles for the hardest oil. Each blend melted as one batch per oil; pour temperature measured and recorded — no blend temperature is published, so use the one you validated for the old blend and note it.
3
Adhesion first, before any burnPhotograph every candle from four marked sides at 48 hours and 7 days. Run the example temperature cycle — 8 hours warm, 16 hours at room temperature, 3–5 times, warm phase well below CSI 468's stated 50–53°C melting point — on one candle per arm, and photograph again. This is the REPEAT that justifies the change.
4
Burn: wick CONFIRM and throw CONFIRMFrom the cure checkpoint you used before, burn new beside old in cycles of about 3–4 hours with full cool-down. Record pool diameter and depth, time to full pool, flame height, soot, mushrooming, jar warmth and weight loss. Throw on your blind panel in your fixed room.
5
Wick REPEAT on the hardest oilBurn the three-wick ladder to the end of usable wax, recording the same lines. Choose the wick that is no worse than the old approved candle on every safety line and meets your throw rule — never a bigger flame for more throw.
6
Release or escalateEvery CONFIRM passes → release the new blend for that oil. A CONFIRM fails → that oil moves to REPEAT. Sign the change record with the date.

The plan is designed so that adhesion — the reason for the change — is proven on the same candles before they are burned, and every other line is a comparison with the old blend made the same day. That is the cheapest way to separate "the blend changed this" from "this week was different".

Keep the old blend alive until release
Do not finish your old-blend wax before the CONFIRMs are done. You need it for the controls, and if a CONFIRM fails you may need it for production while you investigate. Label the bags with the ratio and the date the change record was opened.

The release sheet

One line per oil. Every CONFIRM is judged as "new no worse than old" on your written rules; every REPEAT is judged against the original acceptance rule for that test. No industry figure exists for any of these lines — the rules are your house standard.

Example release sheet · tier 2 · fill per oil · "no worse" means within your written margin
Blend change release sheet
Oil Adhesion (REPEAT) Cycle (REPEAT) Wick (CONFIRM / REPEAT) Throw (CONFIRM) Sweat / tops (CONFIRM) Released? Signed / date
Lavender pass / fail pass / fail no worse / worse no worse / worse no worse / worse yes / no ___
Jasmine pass / fail pass / fail no worse / worse no worse / worse no worse / worse yes / no ___
Cinnamon Vanilla pass / fail pass / fail REPEAT: wick ___ no worse / worse no worse / worse yes / no ___
Blue Ocean pass / fail pass / fail no worse / worse no worse / worse no worse / worse yes / no ___

If one oil fails its throw CONFIRM in the new blend, you have three honest options: move that oil to a load or wick REPEAT inside the published ceilings — CSI 464 states 10%, so a blend that is mostly CSI 464 has little headroom above 8% if you treat each parent's ceiling as a cautious limit; keep that oil in the old blend as a separate formula; or accept that this blend does not suit it. Changing one fragrance's load rather than the whole collection's wax is the neighbouring decision.

A change record turns "we tweaked the wax" into a list of things you have proven again — and a much shorter list of things you did not need to.

A tier-1 change — CONFIRMs on the lead oil (Lavender) and the hardest oil only, three new and three old candles each, no wick ladder — would need 12 candles and about ₹4,545.24 in CSI materials on the same basis. A tier-3 change costs more than either, because every line repeats for every oil. The size of the change is the biggest lever on what the retest costs, which is one more reason to blend in small steps.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. Most of this kit is oil and wax you already hold. If you are buying all of it from us to run a retest, check first whether the change is worth making at all: if your old 90:10 candle only spots in winter, a process fix such as warmer glass or slower cooling leaves every other result in the KEEP column and costs no retest.

What the new blend costs per candle

Material cost barely moves between blends of these two waxes. At the 5 kg rates — CSI 464 ₹507.40/kg and CSI 468 ₹637.00/kg — the old 90:10 candle with Lavender at the 1 kg rate, an example Eco Thin C1 wick and the jar at ₹94.40 costs ₹234.76 in CSI materials; the new 70:30 costs ₹238.34, ₹3.58 more. The real cost of a blend change is the retest, not the wax — which is why sizing the change matters more than shaving the blend's material price.

The decision rule

Working decision rule · tiers and margins are your house rules
From the change record to release
If this is true It means Do / buy
New blend does not improve adhesion (REPEAT fails) The change has no reason to exist Stop. Return to the old blend; buy nothing
Adhesion improves; every CONFIRM passes The blend is released Buy production packs of both waxes; sign the record
One oil fails its throw or wick CONFIRM That oil reacts to the blend Move that oil to REPEAT, or keep it in the old blend
The hardest oil needs a different wick The wick ladder found it Buy the new wick for that oil only; update its spec
Several oils fail The move was bigger than it looked Treat as tier 3 — or go back to a smaller step

If the whole exercise feels heavy, that is useful information too: it is the cost of changing a formula after launch, and it is the reason a fair wax comparison and choosing a wax on every criterion together are worth doing before a range goes into production.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A retest sells wax and oil, and we would rather you ran a smaller one. This page keeps every oil-only result in the KEEP column, points to process fixes that need no retest, and publishes no blend ceiling, blend temperature or wick size, because none exists.

Oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026, stock re-checked 7 October 2026. Chunks, CSI 464 and CSI 468 prices are CSI live pricing, re-checked 7 October 2026; Natural Soy Pearl is CSI live pricing, re-checked 1 October 2026. Every candle split, per-jar figure, test-kit total and cost-per-acceptable-candle figure on this page is computed and shown to two decimals so you can check it; geometry is labelled illustrative where the dimensions are yours rather than published.

Jar counts per arm, photo checkpoints, glass-warm settings, temperature-cycle conditions, the scoring scale and every acceptance threshold are labelled working practices or your own house standard — no industry figure exists for an acceptable wet spot. Frequently asked questions

Do I need to retest my wick after changing my wax blend?
Yes. Melt-pool width and depth, flame and jar warmth are commonly described as depending on the wax mixture. CONFIRM on every oil; REPEAT with a wick ladder on your hardest oil if the change is large.
Do I need to retest every fragrance after a wax change?
Every fragrance needs at least a short side-by-side CONFIRM in the new blend — throw, sweating and cure. The choice of fragrance and its documents do not change.
How much can I change a wax blend without retesting?
No industry rule exists. As an example house rule, a shift of 10 points or less between the same two waxes gets CONFIRMs; more gets REPEATs on the sensitive lines; a new wax in the blend gets a full retest.
What does CONFIRM mean in candle testing?
A short side-by-side check: three candles in the new formula and three in the old, poured the same day, judged as 'no worse' on your written rules. If it fails, the line moves to a full REPEAT.
Does changing wax affect fragrance load?
It can change how the candle holds and releases oil. Keep the load inside the published ceilings — CSI 464 states 10%, CSI 468 and Chunks 13%; no blend ceiling is published — and CONFIRM for sweating and throw.
Should I keep my old wax blend during retesting?
Yes. You need it for same-day controls, and for production if a CONFIRM fails. Label bags with the ratio and the change-record date.

Customer reviews: The six reviews at the top of this page are genuine, published Judge.me reviews left by CSI customers on the product pages named on each card — Eco Candle Wicks, Premium Candle Wicking Needle and Bamboo Wick Holder. They are general product reviews, not assessments of the guidance set out here. Names, star ratings, dates and products are as recorded by Judge.me and wording is unedited. "Verified buyer" appears only on the three reviews Judge.me recorded as verified — Monika Deep, Subhankar Roy and Sneha Tamang; the reviews from Ashwini, LJ and Lalitha Jagan are published but not recorded as verified, and carry no badge.

Non-price figures and assumptions: Load convention: fragrance load is a share of the finished candle (oil = W × L; wax = W × (1 − L)). Series default candle 150 g at 8% (12 g oil + 138 g wax). Blend ratios are shares of the wax portion: old 90:10 (124.2 g + 13.8 g), new 70:30 (96.6 g + 41.4 g). Example house tiers (≤10 points; >10 points; new wax). Illustrative 'hardest oil'. Working practices: 3 candles per arm, same-day old-blend controls, 5% pour loss, adhesion photos at 48 h and 7 days plus a cycle (example 8 h warm / 16 h room, 3–5 cycles), burn cycles of about 3–4 hours. Example neighbour wicks Eco Thick C2 and Cotton Braided are not size recommendations. Production cost uses 5 kg wax rates, Lavender at the 1 kg rate and an example Eco Thin C1 wick. What CSI's product pages state (quoted, not CSI test results): Luxury Soy Wax Chunks — maximum fragrance load 13%, fragrance addition 80–90°C, pour 75–80°C in the spec table (the step list also shows 70–80°C), stir 2 minutes, cure minimum 48 hours, ideally 1–2 weeks, and "excellent adhesion to glass and container surfaces reduces wet spots and pull-away"; Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 — fragrance load up to 10%, an 80–90°C melt/pour working range, "excellent glass adhesion", single-pour, low frosting; Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 — melting point 50–53°C, pour 58–60°C, fragrance load up to 13%, "formulated for excellent glass adhesion and a one-pour finish"; Natural Soy Pearl — no fragrance ceiling, temperature, cure or adhesion statement published. Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid (150 gram) — thick-walled clear glass, approximately 150 g wax fill, about 8 cm tall with lid, rim about 7 cm, base about 6.5 cm, "safe for hot pour up to 85°C". All three wax pages make the same adhesion claim, so the claim cannot rank them. CSI publishes no adhesion, wet-spot, shrinkage, contraction or frosting data for any wax, oil, dye or jar, no glass thickness in millimetres, no internal jar diameters and no wick-size-per-jar chart; no industry acceptance threshold for wet spots exists. Mechanisms (wax contraction as it cools and crystallises, glass temperature, cooling rate, residues, temperature cycling, load and dye effects) are general candle-making knowledge, phrased as commonly described. Material costs exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November.
