Starting Budget · Lean Three Months
The fear of unused stock is healthy. The answer is not to buy less than you need, but to buy it in the order you need it — one month at a time, with each month's sales deciding the next order.
₹22,844.80
cash you keep on day one by buying month 1 only (₹6,726.20) instead of all three months (₹29,571.00) — example plan of 108 candles · CSI pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
What is a lean candle inventory? One where you hold one month of materials plus a small buffer, and buy the next month only when the current one is selling. Nothing is bought for sales you have not yet seen.

How much should I buy for my first month? Enough for your planned first-month candles and no more. For an example plan of 24 candles in four scents: 5 kg wax, 100 g of each oil, five packs of jars and 30 wicks — ₹6,726.20 of materials.

Is buying monthly more expensive? Not on CSI's listed prices. Wax and most oils are priced flat per gram above 100 g. In our example the three lean months total ₹29,171.60 against ₹29,571.00 bought up front — lean is ₹399.40 cheaper, because the up-front order rounds every oil up to 500 g. The day-one cash difference is ₹22,844.80.

What if sales are slower than planned? That is the point of lean. If months 2 and 3 sell half the plan, the up-front buyer is left holding materials for 42 candles, about ₹10,725.86. The lean buyer simply orders less. See the downside test.
The short answer
Month 1: 24 candles · 5 kg Chunks ₹2,995.00 · four oils at 100 g ₹1,784.20 · 5 packs of jars ₹1,770.00 · 30 wicks ₹177.00 = ₹6,726.20.
Rule: Hold one month plus a buffer. Reorder when stock covers about two weeks at last month's rate. Move a scent up a size only after it sells.
Up front vs lean: Day one: ₹29,571.00 vs ₹6,726.20. Three-month total: ₹29,571.00 vs ₹29,171.60. Tools one-off: ₹1,357.00.
Cash out each month — buy three months at once, or buy one month at a time ₹29,571.00₹6,726.20Month 1 · 24 candles₹9,651.00Month 2 · 36 candles₹12,794.40Month 3 · 48 candles All three months bought on day one Lean: each month bought as it starts Materials only (wax, oil, wick, jar) · example sales plan 24 / 36 / 48 candles · tools excluded
The black bar is the whole three-month order paid on day one. The grey bars are the lean route, paid as each month starts. The lean total is ₹29,171.60 against ₹29,571.00 up front — slightly lower, because CSI's wax and most oils are priced flat and the up-front order rounds every oil up to 500 g — and the lean route never commits money to a month you have not reached. Sales figures are an example plan to replace with your own.
Straight answer
I'm afraid of buying raw materials that won't get used — how do I build a lean candle-making inventory for my first three months?
Buy one month at a time and let each month's sales write the next order. Start from a sales plan you are prepared to be wrong about — our example is 24 candles in October, 36 in November (Diwali is 8 November) and 48 in December, across four scents. For month 1 buy only month 1: 5 kg of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, 100 g of each oil, five packs of jars and 30 wicks, ₹6,726.20 of materials plus ₹1,357.00 of tools you buy once. Order month 2 in the last week of month 1, sized to what actually sold. On CSI's listed prices this costs you nothing extra, because wax is flat per kilo and most oils are flat per gram above 100 g: the three lean months total ₹29,171.60, against ₹29,571.00 for buying all three months on day one, so lean is ₹399.40 cheaper here. What lean really saves is cash and risk. You keep ₹22,844.80 in hand on day one, and if months 2 and 3 sell half the plan, you are not left holding about ₹10,725.86 of materials for 42 candles nobody bought.
One line: the question is never 'how much for three months?' — it is 'how much for this month, and what will this month teach me about the next?'
Month 1 in one order: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks 5 kg (₹2,995.00), 100 g each of Orchard Pear, Fallen Leaves, British Rose and Pumpkin Spice (₹1,784.20), five packs of White Matte Glass Jars (₹1,770.00) and 30 Eco Thin C1 wicks (₹177.00). Total ₹6,726.20 for 24 candles.

Why unused stock happens

Nobody buys materials they expect to waste. They buy for a business they imagine, and then run the one that actually turns up.

Unused candle stock almost always comes from one of three decisions made on day one. The first is buying for the whole plan at once — three months, sometimes six — because a bigger order feels more serious. The second is buying every scent equally, when in practice two or three scents will outsell the rest. The third is buying bigger packs for a price break that is not there. On CSI's catalogue, wax, most oils above 100 g and Eco wicks are priced flat, so the bigger pack buys you nothing but a heavier shelf.

All three share a root cause: they commit money before the business has produced any information. A lean inventory reverses the order. You commit money in small steps, and every step comes after a month of sales has told you something. The cost of that caution, as the next section shows, is nil on CSI's prices. The cost of skipping it can be most of a month's materials. If you are still choosing scents, bulk vs trial quantities for ten fragrances covers the testing stage; this guide starts once you are selling.

Write the sales plan down, then treat it as a guess
Lean does not mean planless. Write down the candles you expect to sell each month, split by scent. Then buy month 1 only. At the end of the month, compare the plan to what sold, and let the difference change month 2. The plan gets better every month; the inventory never gets ahead of it.
The mistake that looks like prudence: buying every scent the same. Four scents at 500 g each (₹8,537.00) feels balanced. In practice, one or two will lead and one will lag, and the laggard's 500 g sits for months. At ₹2,950.00, a 500 g Pumpkin Spice that sells four candles leaves 436 g on the shelf. Buy every scent at 100 g until sales tell you which ones deserve more.

The three-month plan, month by month

The example below uses a 200 g candle at 8% (16 g of oil, 184 g of wax), Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, an Eco Thin C1 wick and a White Matte Glass Jar. Wax is planned at 184 g plus a 5% allowance for pour loss and test burns (193.2 g a candle), a working assumption. The sales plan — 24, 36 and 48 candles, split evenly across four scents — is an example; replace it with your own. The months are October, November and December 2026, which puts Diwali (8 November) in month 2.

Example sales plan · materials only · oils and wax CSI live pricing 24 September 2026 · jars and wicks verified 10 September 2026
What to buy at the start of each month
Month Candles Wax (Chunks) Oil (four scents) Jars (5-packs) Wicks (Thin C1) Month total
Month 1 (October) 24 5 kg · ₹2,995.00 100 g each · ₹1,784.20 5 packs · ₹1,770.00 20 + 10 · ₹177.00 ₹6,726.20
Month 2 (November, Diwali) 36 5 kg + 2 × 1 kg · ₹4,193.00 100 g + 50 g each · ₹2,803.00 7 packs · ₹2,478.00 20 + 10 · ₹177.00 ₹9,651.00
Month 3 (December) 48 5 kg + 4 × 1 kg · ₹5,391.00 2 × 100 g each · ₹3,568.40 10 packs · ₹3,540.00 50 · ₹295.00 ₹12,794.40
Three months 108 ₹12,579.00 ₹8,155.60 ₹7,788.00 ₹649.00 ₹29,171.60

Three things keep this plan lean. Oil is bought in 100 g and 50 g steps, never 500 g, until a scent has earned it. Six candles a scent in month 1 use 96 g, so one 100 g bottle each is enough. Nine in month 2 use 144 g, which the 4 g left over plus a 100 g and a 50 g cover. Twelve in month 3 use 192 g, covered by two 100 g bottles. Wax is bought as a 5 kg bag plus 1 kg packs, because the Chunks cost ₹599.00 a kilo either way and the 1 kg packs let you stop at exactly what the month needs. Jars and wicks are bought in the packs that just cover the month. Every month starts with a small leftover, not a cupboard.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. We would sell more if we told you to buy the quarter up front. On our listed prices it would cost you more, not less: ₹29,571.00 up front against ₹29,171.60 lean. British Rose and Fallen Leaves are cheaper per gram at 500 g, but rounding all four scents up to a 500 g bottle buys 68 g more of each than the plan needs, and a 10 kg bag of Chunks is ₹0.90 a kilo dearer than the 1 kg pack. Buy the 500 g when a scent has sold through two 100 g bottles in a month, not before.

What is left at the end of each month

A lean plan is judged by its leftovers. They should be small enough to ignore and big enough to cover a slow delivery.
Example plan · after each month's pours
Stock carried into the next month
After Wax left Oil left Jars left Wicks left
Month 1 (October) 363 g 4 g per scent 1 6
Month 2 (November, Diwali) 408 g 10 g per scent 0 0
Month 3 (December) 134 g 18 g per scent 2 2

At no point does the business carry more than about half a kilo of wax, a few grams of oil per scent or a couple of jars. The 5% wax allowance is already spent inside each month, so the carried wax is genuine spare. That buffer is deliberately small. If CSI's delivery to you takes longer than a few days, or if Diwali demand in month 2 runs ahead of plan, you will want a slightly larger buffer — say a week's candles — and the next section shows how to set it. Delivery times are not published in our data; ask on WhatsApp when you place your first order and plan around the answer.

Compare that with the day-one route. Buying all 108 candles' worth at once means 21 kg of wax (two 10 kg bags and a 1 kg, ₹12,597.00), four 500 g oils (₹8,537.00), 22 packs of jars (₹7,788.00) and 110 wicks (₹649.00): ₹29,571.00 on day one. For the first month, most of that sits unused. A jar bought in October for a December candle has done nothing for your cash for two months.

The downside test

Every inventory plan should be tested against the month you fear. Suppose month 1 goes to plan, but months 2 and 3 sell only half: 18 and 24 candles instead of 36 and 48. The lean buyer has over-bought November by 18 candles' worth — that is the most lean can ever be wrong by, one month — and sees it before ordering December. December's order then covers only the 6 candles those leftovers cannot. The up-front buyer has already paid for 108 candles and has made 66.

Example · months 2 and 3 sell half the plan · materials valued at the up-front purchase prices
What each route is left holding
Up front (bought day one) Lean (bought monthly)
Candles sold over three months 66 66
Candles' worth of materials unused 42 at the end of month 3 18 at the end of month 2, poured in month 3
Oil left unpoured 944 g across four 500 g bottles A few grams per scent
Value of unused materials at the end of month 3 about ₹10,725.86 close to nothing
Cash committed on day one ₹29,571.00 ₹6,726.20

The ₹10,725.86 is 42 candles' worth of oil at the four scents' average 500 g rate, 184 g of Chunks at the 10 kg rate, a wick and a jar each (₹255.38 a candle). It is not lost — the materials still work — but it is cash that cannot pay for a new scent, a better jar or next season's stock. That is the real cost of a slow month when you bought too early. How much raw-material inventory to hold as you grow takes the same idea into later stages, and safety stock when sales are unpredictable covers the buffer once volumes rise.

The CSI principle
Commit money in the same rhythm that sales arrive.
If candles sell month by month, materials should be bought month by month. Every order placed ahead of the sales that justify it is a bet, and on CSI's flat per-kilo and per-gram prices it is a bet with almost no payoff.

Reorder triggers

Lean works only if you reorder on time. Waiting until the wax runs out turns a lean plan into an emergency order and a missed Diwali week. Set a trigger for each material in terms of candles, not kilos, because candles are what you count every day.

1
Count candles, not gramsDivide what is left by the per-candle amount: wax by 193.2 g, each oil by 16 g, jars and wicks by one. The smallest number is how many candles you can still make.
2
Set the trigger at two weeks of last month's salesIf last month sold 36, two weeks is about 18 candles. When any material falls below 18 candles' worth, reorder that material. Two weeks is a working assumption; shorten it if deliveries to you are quick, lengthen it before Diwali.
3
Size the order to next month's plan, adjustedTake next month's plan, adjust each scent up or down by how it sold against plan this month, subtract what is left, and round up to the nearest pack.
4
Move a scent up a size only after two bottlesWhen a scent has used two 100 g bottles in a month, its next order can be a 500 g. For British Rose that is ₹3.19/g against ₹3.42/g at 100 g; for Orchard Pear ₹3.74/g against ₹3.80/g. When to stop buying 100 g bottles sets the threshold properly.
5
Drop a scent down a size when it slowsA scent that sold two candles last month gets a 50 g next month, not another 100 g. Lean works in both directions.

Diwali deserves its own note. Month 2 in this plan is November, and the festive week falls early in it. If your November plan depends on Diwali gifting, place the month 2 order in mid-October rather than the last days of the month, so the candles can cure before they are sold. That is the one point in the three months where lean means ordering earlier, not later. How early to build inventory before Diwali covers the festive ramp in detail.

Labels and packaging are not in this list because CSI does not sell them, apart from Premium Packing Tissue Paper (₹650.00 for 100 sheets). Apply the same lean rule to them: order the first month's labels, not a year's. For example, 24 labels at ₹8.00 — replace with your printer's quote — is ₹192.00, against a minimum print run that may be far larger. Packaging cost per order covers that side. If you are also making wax melts, sharing materials between candles and melts keeps the lean plan lean, and the order-of-purchase guide puts all of this in sequence.

Month 2 is Diwali month. If your October candles are selling, your November order needs to arrive by mid-October to cure in time. Send us your month 1 sales by scent and we will help you size month 2, with GST invoicing and IFRA documentation on request.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. A quarter's order on day one would suit us better than a month's. This page recommends the month's order because our own flat pricing on wax and most oils means the bigger order saves you very little, and the risk is yours.

Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing pulled on 24 September 2026. Wick, jar and tool prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026; tissue paper was pulled on 25 September 2026. Month totals, leftovers and the downside value are plain arithmetic on those prices, shown to two decimals.

The 24 / 36 / 48 sales plan, the half-sales downside, the two-week reorder trigger, the 5% wax allowance and the ₹8.00 label are working assumptions or labelled examples, not forecasts or quotes. Delivery times are not published. For help sizing a monthly order, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

How much candle inventory should a beginner keep?
One month of planned production plus a small buffer — about two weeks' worth of your slowest-to-arrive material. Buy the next month when the current month's sales have told you what to adjust.
Is it cheaper to buy candle supplies in bulk or monthly?
On CSI's listed prices, rarely much cheaper in bulk, because wax and most oils above 100 g are priced flat. In our example, three lean months cost ₹29,171.60 against ₹29,571.00 bought up front. The big difference is the cash committed on day one.
How do I avoid wasting fragrance oil?
Buy 100 g per scent until a scent has used two bottles in a month, drop slow scents to 50 g, and never buy every scent in the same size. A 15 g tester is the cheapest way to try a new one.
When should I reorder candle wax?
When what is left covers about two weeks of last month's candles. At 193.2 g a candle (184 g plus 5%), two weeks of 36 candles a month is about 18 candles, or roughly 3.5 kg. Adjust for your delivery time.
How many candles should I make in my first month?
As many as you can realistically sell or gift for feedback, not as many as your materials allow. Our example uses 24 in four scents — six each — which is enough to see which scents move.
Does wax go bad if I store it?
Shelf life is not published in our data. Store wax sealed, cool and dry, and ask on WhatsApp for the product's storage guidance. A lean plan avoids the question by keeping only about a month on hand.
Lean from the first order
