Most ranges climb in size and price together: a small candle, a standard one, a large one. The maths does not climb as neatly. Bigger candles use more wax and oil, heavier glass, bigger boxes and a heavier courier slab, and a premium oil in a big jar can make the top tier the weakest earner in the range.

I'm comparing a ₹499, ₹799 and ₹1,199 candle — how does jar size affect raw-material cost, shipping weight and achievable margin?
A bigger jar raises three costs together. Raw materials rise with the fill (wax and oil scale exactly), with the jar (a bigger jar costs more) and sometimes with the wick (a wide jar may need two). Shipping weight rises faster than the candle, because glass and packaging often weigh more than the wax. Margin then depends on whether the price rises faster than both. In our worked range, all in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at 8%: the ₹499 candle (160 g British Rose, Salsa jar) costs ₹167.37 in materials and keeps ₹292.40 (58.6%) after example packaging and fees; the ₹799 (200 g Bergamot Amber, White Matte) costs ₹294.52 and keeps ₹445.25 (55.7%); the ₹1,199 (400 g Santal Noir, example jar, two wicks) costs ₹671.31 and keeps only ₹430.21 (35.9%). Packed weights on example courier slabs push the ₹1,199 into a dearer slab too. The top tier earns less than the middle one because it doubled the wax and stepped up the oil while the price rose by half. Fix it by changing the oil, the size or the price. Each tier is a container candle at an 8% load in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, which the wax maker rates up to 13%. The ₹499 tier fills a 200 ml Salsa jar to an illustrative 160 g; the jar comes with its golden lug cap, ₹29.50 in packs of 100. The ₹799 tier is the series' 200 g White Matte Glass Jar at ₹70.80, with an example lid because none is listed. The ₹1,199 tier is a 400 g candle; CSI lists no jar of that size with a published fill, so the jar and lid are example figures, and two Eco Thin C1 wicks stand in for whatever a burn test decides.

Read the last two rows together. Price per gram of candle runs ₹3.12, ₹4.00 and ₹3.00: the biggest candle charges the least per gram of the three, which is how customers expect a large size to work. Materials per gram do not fall with it: they rise from ₹1.05 to ₹1.68, because each tier also steps up the oil. At ₹1,199 the oil alone is ₹294.08, more than the whole ₹499 candle's materials. The gap between price per gram and materials per gram is the margin, and it narrows sharply at the top.
Two upgrades at once. The most common reason a top tier underperforms is that it gets a bigger jar and a premium oil in the same step. Either change alone is usually affordable; together they multiply. Cost each tier from its own recipe, as the gift-set post does for sets, and you will see the problem before the price tag is printed.
Shipping weight by jar size
The customer pays for the candle; the courier charges for the parcel. CSI does not publish glass weights for its jars, so the figures below are examples — weigh an empty jar and a packed parcel of your own. The courier slabs are also examples: up to 500 g, up to 1 kg, then each extra 500 g.

In every tier the candle is less than half the parcel. The ₹499 and ₹799 parcels land in the same example slab, so the courier is the same ₹75.00 whether the customer paid ₹499 or ₹799 — 15.0% of the smaller price against 9.4% of the larger. The ₹1,199 parcel crosses 1 kg and moves up a slab. Weight is also why the ₹499 parcel is worth trimming: at 540 g it sits just over the 500 g example edge. Weigh one of each before you set the tiers
Glass weight varies a lot between jar styles of the same capacity. A heavy-based luxury jar can add more to the parcel than the extra wax does. Put an empty jar of each size on your scale, then a fully packed parcel, and read both against your courier's rate card.Margin in rupees and per cent

The ₹799 tier is the strongest in rupees, keeping ₹445.25 before courier. The ₹499 keeps the highest share of its price, 58.6%, because British Rose is cheap and the Salsa jar brings its own lid. The ₹1,199 is the weakest on both measures: it keeps less in rupees than the ₹799 despite costing the customer ₹400 more. None of this is visible from the prices alone, and all of it is visible once each tier is costed from its recipe.
The CSI principle
Each tier must earn its place on its own numbers.
A price ladder that looks logical to the customer can hide a tier that earns less than the one below it. Cost every size from its own recipe, jar, wick, packaging and parcel weight, and compare margins in rupees and per cent before you launch the range.
Fixing a weak top tier
There are four levers: a cheaper oil, a smaller fill, a higher price, or a cheaper jar and box. Here are three of them applied to the ₹1,199 candle, with everything else unchanged. The jar, lid, box and weights for the alternatives are examples like the original.

Keeping the 400 g size but using the ₹799 tier's Bergamot Amber lifts the margin to 45.5%. Keeping Santal Noir but shrinking to 300 g lifts it to 50.4% and drops the parcel under 1 kg. Keeping both and pricing at ₹1,499 lifts it to 48.3%. Which is right depends on what the top tier is for. If its job is "more candle", use the house oil. If its job is "a better scent", keep the premium oil in a standard size. If it must be both, it belongs at ₹1,499 — the ₹1,499 allocation post shows how to split that price.
Argued against our own interest, plainly. A 400 g candle with a premium oil sells us twice the wax and more than twice the fragrance of a 200 g candle. On these numbers it is the weakest earner in the range at ₹1,199. We would rather you built a top tier that makes money — with a house oil, a smaller premium candle, or a higher price — than one that sells well and quietly loses ground on every order.

How much should a large candle cost compared to a small one?
Enough that each step up keeps more rupees than the tier below. Cost each size from its own recipe, including jar, wick count, packaging and parcel weight. In our example a ₹1,199 400 g candle with a premium oil kept less than a ₹799 200 g one.
Why is my biggest candle the least profitable?
Usually because it doubled the wax and upgraded the oil in one step while the price rose by less. Switch to the house oil, reduce the size, or raise the price, and recost.
How much does a candle weigh for shipping?
More than its wax. Glass and packaging often outweigh the candle. CSI does not publish jar glass weights, so weigh an empty jar and a packed parcel, and read them against your courier's slabs.
What margin should each candle tier have?
There is no fixed rule, but each tier should keep more rupees than the one below it, and none should fall so low that courier, fixed costs and your pay cannot come out of it. Show both gross margin on price and markup on cost.
Which CSI jar is best for a ₹499 candle?
The 200 ml Salsa jar keeps costs down: ₹29.50 in packs of 100 with its golden lug cap included. Fill weight is not published, so weigh one filled to your line before costing.
Does a 400 g candle need two wicks?
It may, depending on the jar's diameter. CSI does not publish wick sizing by diameter, so run a burn test. Cost the candle at the wick count you end up using.
