Cost per Candle · Dosage vs Price
‘Twice the price but you need half as much’ sounds like a wash. It is not quite: the grams of oil you save are replaced by wax, so the dearer oil has to work at slightly less than half the dosage to break even. Here is the formula, and how to find out whether it does.
3.64%
dosage at which Jasmine Coconut Spa Ceylon (₹8.00/g) costs the same per 200 g candle as Mango Coconut (₹3.96/g) at 8% · 1 kg rates · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Which oil is cheaper per candle? The dearer oil is cheaper only if it works below its break-even dosage: L_B = L_A × (p_A − w) ÷ (p_B − w), where w is the wax price per gram. For Mango Coconut at 8% against Jasmine Coconut Spa Ceylon at 1 kg rates, L_B = 3.64%.

Why isn't it simply 4% for twice the price? Because every gram of oil you leave out becomes a gram of wax, and wax costs money. The ratio here is 2.02×, so the naive answer is 3.96%; with the wax included it is 3.64%. The dearer oil has to do slightly better than ‘half as much’.

Does CSI say which oils work at a lower dosage? No. CSI publishes no dosage or throw data per oil. The dosage that matches your current candle is something only a side-by-side test in your wax and jar can tell you — the ladder test shows how.

What if my test says the dearer oil works at 6%? Then, using that example result, the dearer oil costs ₹208.60 of oil and wax per candle against ₹173.64 for the cheaper oil at 8% — ₹34.96 more. At 3.64% or below it would be cheaper. The worked example has the numbers.
The short answer
Formula: Break-even dosage L_B = L_A × (p_A − w) ÷ (p_B − w). If your tested dosage for oil B is below L_B, B is cheaper per candle; above it, A is.
Real pair: Mango Coconut ₹3.96/g vs Jasmine Coconut Spa Ceylon ₹8.00/g at 1 kg (2.02×): break-even 3.64%. At 100 g rates (1.60×): 4.76%.
Your test: Example: B matches A-at-8% at 6% → B costs ₹34.96 more per candle. The load-reduction post covers cutting a single oil.
The oil at twice the price is cheaper only below its break-even dosage ₹100 ₹130 ₹160 ₹190 2% 3% 4% 5% 6% 7% 8% 9% Dosage of the dearer oil (Jasmine Coconut Spa Ceylon, ₹8.00/g) in a 200 g candle Mango Coconut at 8%: ₹173.64 break-even 3.64% Solid line: oil + wax cost of the dearer oil at each dosage · dashed: the cheaper oil at 8% · 1 kg rates, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks
The dearer oil's cost rises steeply with dosage; the cheaper oil at 8% is a flat line. They cross at 3.64%. Below that point the dearer oil is cheaper per candle; above it, the cheaper oil wins. Where your candle sits on the solid line is not in any price list — it comes from your own test.
Straight answer
I'm comparing two fragrance oils where one costs twice as much but works at a lower dosage — which one is actually cheaper per finished candle?
Compare them per finished candle, including the wax that replaces any oil you leave out. The dearer oil B is cheaper only if it works at or below the break-even dosage: L_B = L_A × (p_A − w) ÷ (p_B − w), where p is each oil's price per gram and w the wax's. Take a real pair: Mango Coconut at ₹3.96 a gram (1 kg) and Jasmine Coconut Spa Ceylon at ₹8.00 a gram (1 kg), 2.02 times the price, with Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹0.60. If Mango Coconut runs at 8%, Jasmine Coconut Spa Ceylon must match it at 3.64% or less — not the 3.96% that ‘twice the price, half the dose’ suggests. CSI publishes no dosage data for any oil, so the dosage that really matches your candle must come from your own blind test. Suppose your test says 6%: then the dearer oil costs ₹208.60 of oil and wax per 200 g candle against ₹173.64 — ₹34.96 more. Also check the pack size: at 100 g rates the price ratio is only 1.60× and the break-even rises to 4.76%. The true-cost hub shows where these lines sit in the full cost.
One line: the dearer oil must beat ‘half the dose’, because the oil you save is replaced by wax.
To compare two oils properly you need enough of each for a small dosage ladder. Jasmine Coconut Spa Ceylon 50 g at ₹399.00 pours test candles at 5%, 6% and 7% (36 g in 200 g candles), and Mango Coconut 50 g at ₹250.00 pours the 8% reference with enough over for a second.

The break-even dosage

A supplier says an oil ‘goes further’. That claim is only worth money if it survives the arithmetic — and the arithmetic includes the wax.

Two candles made with different oils differ in only two lines: the oil and the wax. The wick, jar, lid and label are the same. So the comparison needs just those two lines. For a candle of weight W at load L, oil and wax together cost W × [L × p + (1 − L) × w], where p is the oil's price per gram and w the wax's. Set the dearer oil B's cost equal to the cheaper oil A's and solve for B's load:

The CSI principle
L_B = L_A × (p_A − w) ÷ (p_B − w)
The candle weight cancels out, so this holds for any size. If your tested dosage for B is below L_B, B is the cheaper oil per finished candle. If it is above, A is. The wax term w is why ‘twice the price, half the dose’ is not quite a draw.

Why the wax matters: if B works at a lower load, you pour more wax into each candle to keep the weight the same. That extra wax is a cost the naive comparison forgets. With Chunks at ₹0.60 a gram it is small but not negligible — it moves the break-even for our pair from 3.96% to 3.64%. With a dearer wax the effect is larger; with Natural Soy Pearl at ₹0.42 a gram it is smaller.

8% 16 g 184 g ₹238.20 ₹173.64 +₹64.56 Mango Coconut

Read down the table: at 3.5% the dearer oil is fractionally cheaper; at 4% it is already dearer by ₹5.36, at 5% by ₹20.16 and at an equal 8% by ₹64.56. The break-even sits at 3.64%. Add the identical lines back — an Eco Thin C1 wick (₹5.90) and a White Matte Glass Jar (₹70.80) — and each candle's materials are ₹76.70 higher, but the difference between the two oils does not change.

The ratio depends on the pack

‘Twice the price’ is usually a comparison of two bottles. But the price ratio per gram can change with the size you buy, because a few oils have a real kilo break and most do not. Mango Coconut is one of the 24 oils where the kilo is at least 5% cheaper per gram (20.7%); Jasmine Coconut Spa Ceylon is priced flat. So the pair's ratio — and the break-even — depends on which sizes you compare.

CSI live pricing, 24 September 2026 · break-even for B against A at 8%, Chunks ₹0.60/g

1 kg ₹3.96 ₹8.00 2.02× 3.96% 3.64%

From the 15 g tester to the 100 g the dearer oil is only about 1.4 to 1.6 times the price, so it needs to work at roughly 4.8% to 5.4% to break even. At the kilo it is 2.02 times, and the bar drops to 3.64%. If you are comparing a kilo of one against 100 g of the other, you are comparing sizes as much as oils. Always compare at the size you will actually produce from. Per-gram price breaks are rare across CSI's listed catalogue, so for most pairs the ratio is the same at every size — but check both oils' ladders before assuming it.

A second pair to try the formula on
British Rose at ₹3.42 a gram (100 g) against Smoked Rose Royale at ₹7.99 a gram (100 g, its smallest size) is a 2.33× ratio. With Chunks, the smoky rose must match British Rose-at-8% at 3.06% or less to be the cheaper candle. The two oils are different scents, so this only matters if a customer would accept either — which is itself worth testing.

A worked example with your test result

The formula tells you the target. Only your test tells you whether the dearer oil hits it.

CSI has not published dosage or throw measurements for any oil, and a claim that an oil ‘works at a lower dosage’ means nothing until you have seen it in your own wax, jar and room. So the worked example below uses a labelled example test result, the kind you would get from the ladder test in the next section: your blind scorers rated Jasmine Coconut Spa Ceylon at 6% as equal to Mango Coconut at 8%. Replace 6% with your own finding.

1
Price each oil per gram at your production size1 kg: Mango Coconut ₹3,964.00 ÷ 1,000 = ₹3.96; Jasmine Coconut Spa Ceylon ₹7,999.00 ÷ 1,000 = ₹8.00. Wax: Chunks ₹599.00 ÷ 1,000 = ₹0.60.
2
Compute the break-even dosageL_B = 8% × (3.964 − 0.599) ÷ (7.999 − 0.599) = 3.64%.
3
Enter your tested dosageExample result: 6%. (This is not a CSI figure — it is the kind of number your own test produces.)
4
Compare it with break-even6% is above 3.64%, so the dearer oil is the more expensive candle.
5
Price the differenceMango Coconut at 8%: 16 g × ₹3.96 + 184 g × ₹0.60 = ₹173.64. Jasmine Coconut Spa Ceylon at 6%: 12 g × ₹8.00 + 188 g × ₹0.60 = ₹208.60. Difference: ₹34.96 a candle in favour of the cheaper oil.
6
Decide on more than costIf customers prefer the dearer scent, that may be worth the difference — but then you are choosing it for the scent, not the saving, and should price the candle accordingly.
Argued against our own interest, plainly. ‘It works at a lower dosage’ is the kind of line that sells premium oils, including ours. We cannot back it for any specific oil, because we have not published dosage data. On the numbers above, a dearer oil needs a remarkably strong result to be the cheaper choice. If you want to pay more for a scent because it is better, do — but do not let a dosage claim you have not tested do the justifying.
Do not test at different cures or wicks. The most common way to ‘prove’ a lower dosage is to compare a well-cured candle of oil B with a freshly poured one of oil A, or to give them different wicks. Pour both on the same day, in the same wax and jar, with the same wick, and cure them the same way. Otherwise you are measuring the process, not the oil.

Finding the real dosage: the ladder test

The ladder test finds the lowest dosage at which the dearer oil matches your current candle. Pour the cheaper oil at your normal load as the reference, and the dearer oil at three or four lower loads. Score them blind. The lowest load that scores level with the reference is your tested dosage — the number that goes into the formula.

Ref Mango Coconut 8% —
1 Jasmine Coconut Spa Ceylon 5% yes / no
2 Jasmine Coconut Spa Ceylon 6% yes / no
3 Jasmine Coconut Spa Ceylon 7% yes / no

Keep every load inside the wax maker's stated maximum — Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated up to 13%, CSI 464 up to 10% — which a lower-dosage ladder always does. If none of the lower loads matches the reference, the dearer oil does not ‘work at a lower dosage’ in your candle, and the question is settled. If you want to go below the break-even, add a 3.6% candle to the ladder: that is the load at which the two oils cost the same.

Differences of a few rupees a candle become real money over a production run. Here is the monthly difference over 500 candles for the dearer oil at several tested dosages, against Mango Coconut at 8%, at 1 kg rates. Positive numbers mean the dearer oil costs more.

The last column is worth a glance too: a lower dosage means fewer kilos to buy and store, which matters for cash flow. Where this fits: the oil and wax lines compared here sit inside the full cost sheet. At a fixed selling price, the break-even dosage interacts with the oil cap in the ₹399 post and the ₹799 post, and at the luxury tier with the allocation in the ₹1,499 post. If the dearer oil wins your test and becomes a best-seller, the five-bestsellers post covers when to move it to kilos.

Twice the price has to mean a little less than half the dose. Test for that number, not for ‘it seems stronger’.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. Premium oils are often sold on the promise that you need less of them. We sell premium oils, and we still say plainly that we have published no dosage data for any of them, and that on the numbers the dearer oil has to perform very well to be the cheaper candle.

Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026. Wick and jar figures are those verified 10 September 2026. Break-even dosages, per-candle and batch figures are plain arithmetic on those prices, shown to two decimals. The 6% test result is an example, not a CSI measurement.

Only two fragrance ceilings are quoted in this data — Luxury Soy Wax Chunks up to 13%, CSI 464 up to 10% — and every load on this page sits within them. For help setting up a comparison between two oils, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

Is a more expensive fragrance oil more economical?
Only if it works at or below its break-even dosage: L_B = L_A × (p_A − w) ÷ (p_B − w). For an oil at about twice the price, that is a little under half your current load — 3.64% against 8% for our pair.
How do I compare fragrance oil cost per candle?
Price each oil per gram at the size you produce from, multiply by the grams in the candle at the load you have tested, and add the wax that makes up the rest of the weight. Compare those two totals; the other lines are identical.
Can I use less fragrance oil with a stronger oil?
Possibly, but CSI has not published dosage or throw data for any oil. Find out with a blind ladder test: the dearer oil at several lower loads against your current oil at its normal load.
What is the formula for break-even fragrance load?
L_B = L_A × (p_A − w) ÷ (p_B − w). p_A and p_B are the two oils' prices per gram, w the wax's price per gram, L_A the load of the cheaper oil. The candle weight cancels out.
Does the wax price affect which fragrance oil is cheaper?
Yes, a little. A lower dosage means more wax per candle. With Chunks at ₹0.60 a gram, our pair's break-even is 3.64% rather than 3.96%. The dearer the wax, the bigger the effect.
Should I buy the 1 kg to compare fragrance oils?
No — test first with the smallest sizes that give you enough for a ladder (usually 50 g). But compare costs at the size you will produce from, because a few oils, like Mango Coconut, are much cheaper per gram at 1 kg. I Use 500 g of One Fragrance Oil Every Month — When Should I Stop Buying 100 g Bottles and Move to 500 g or 1 Kg Packs? covers when to move up a size.
