I'm Launching a Candle Brand Online — Should I Avoid Very Heavy Glass Jars Because of Courier Cost and Breakage Risk?
Aktie
How do I know if my jar is too heavy? Work out its weight budget: your courier's next weight step, minus the candle, minus the packed box and padding. In our worked example, a 150 g candle leaves about 270 g for glass under a 0.5 kg step. Weigh your jar; no CSI listing states a jar weight.
What does crossing a step cost? Only your courier can say. With illustrative inputs of ₹60.00 for the first 0.5 kg and ₹40.00 per extra 0.5 kg, one step is 67% more per parcel, ₹20,000.00 over 500 orders.
And breakage? Plan for it with packaging and a replacement policy, not with thicker glass. In the worked example, one step up costs the same as one breakage in every 5.8 parcels, a rate no reasonable packing should come near.

How couriers turn grams into rupees
Every courier sets its own terms, and they change, so read yours. Two features are common enough to plan around.
Weight steps. Parcels are commonly billed in weight bands or steps rather than by the exact gram: a charge for the first step, then a charge for each additional step. A parcel a few grams over a boundary is billed for the whole next step. That makes freight a staircase, not a slope, and it is why a jar's weight either costs nothing or costs a full step.
Actual versus volumetric weight. Couriers commonly bill on the higher of the actual weight and a volumetric weight worked out from the box's dimensions (length × width × height divided by a divisor the courier sets). A big, light box can be billed as if it were heavy. For small glass candles in snug boxes, actual weight usually governs. Worked example with an assumed divisor of 5,000, used here only as an input: CSI's 11 × 11 × 8 cm box is 968 cm³, a volumetric weight of about 0.19 kg; the 7 x 5 x 4 inch box (about 17.8 × 12.7 × 10.2 cm) is about 2,294 cm³, about 0.46 kg. A packed glass candle will usually weigh more than 0.19 kg, so in the small box actual weight decides; in the larger box the two can be close, so work out both. Use your courier's real divisor.
Freight matters on the way in as well as out. One CSI customer's review reads: "the delivery charges are very high which is restricting me to purchase more". Heavy jars cost more to receive from any supplier, us included, before they cost more to send. CSI dispatches from Pune and does not publish freight rates; ask for a quote on WhatsApp.
Your glass weight budget
The useful question is not "is this jar heavy?" but "how much glass can this product carry before the parcel moves up a step?" That number is the glass weight budget, and you can work it out before you buy a single production jar.
| Product | Candle (from the listing) | Box and padding (illustrative) | Next step | Glass budget |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 150 g candle · Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid | 150 g | 80 g | 500 g | 270 g |
| ~150 g candle · 200 ml Matte / Frosted jar | 150 g | 80 g | 500 g | 270 g |
| 300 g candle · Green Iridescent jar | 300 g | 100 g | 500 g | 100 g |
| 500 g candle · Apothecary dome-lid jar | 500 g | 150 g | 1000 g | 350 g |
| 550 g candle · Clip-top container | 550 g | 150 g | 1000 g | 300 g |
| 700 g candle · Apothecary dome-lid jar | 700 g | 150 g | 1000 g | 150 g |
Three things stand out. Small candles (about 150 g) have a generous budget: a jar and lid under about 270 g keep them in the first step. A 300 g candle has almost no room under 500 g: with 100 g of budget, it will probably land in the second step whatever jar you choose, so that product should be priced for it. Large candles (500 g and up) start in the second step on wax alone; the question for them is whether a heavy jar and a glass lid push them into a third.
Candle weights come from the listings: "150g fill capacity", the 200 ml family's roughly 150 g planning figure (worked example in the 200 ml jar hub), "Capacity - 300g", "~500 g - 700 g", "Wax Fill - 550g". Packaging weights are illustrative. Replace both with your own weighings.
Worked example: what crossing a step costs
Illustrative courier inputs, not a quote from any courier: ₹60.00 for the first 0.5 kg and ₹40.00 for each further 0.5 kg. Plug in your own.
| Item | Light jar, parcel under 0.5 kg | Heavy jar, parcel just over 0.5 kg |
|---|---|---|
| Billable step | 0.5 kg | 1.0 kg |
| Courier charge per parcel (illustrative) | ₹60.00 | ₹100.00 |
| Difference per parcel | — | ₹40.00 (67% more) |
| Over 500 orders | — | ₹20,000.00 |
| Who pays | You, from margin, or your customer, as a higher shipping charge at checkout, on every order | |
A large candle that moves from the 1.0 kg step to 1.5 kg because of a heavy glass lid pays the same ₹40.00 again (₹100.00 to ₹140.00 in the example). When you compare jars, put the step next to the jar price, because both are paid per candle: the Apothecary 500 gm dome-lid jar costs ₹118.00 more per jar than the Clear 150 g jar, but it is a different size of candle and should be priced as one. Between two jars of similar size, a heavier one that crosses a step can cost more per order in freight than it saves or adds in jar price, and that cost is easy to miss because it never appears on the jar invoice.
Deeper trade-offs between a lighter jar and heavier glass for perceived quality across pan-India shipping are worked through in the lighter-versus-heavier guide; ways to make a 200 g candle look substantial without adding weight are in I Want My 200 g Candle to Look Substantial Without Dramatically Increasing Packaging and Courier Weight — What Type of Jar Should I Choose?.
Breakage: glass mass versus packaging
It is tempting to assume that heavier, thicker glass survives transit better. Sometimes a thicker wall does resist a knock that would crack a thin one. But a heavier jar also carries more momentum into every drop and pushes harder against its packaging, and a thick jar that is loose in its box can break just as easily. In our judgement, for parcels, how the jar is held in the box matters more than how thick the glass is. CSI publishes no transit breakage data for any jar, and we would not trust anyone's general figure over your own test shipments.
What a breakage actually costs
Worked example, a 150 g candle in the Clear 150 g jar: replacement materials are ₹173.86 (jar ₹94.40, 138 g of CSI 464 at ₹70.02, a C2 wick at ₹9.44), plus a second shipment at the illustrative ₹60.00: ₹233.86 before fragrance oil, labour, packaging and the customer's patience. Spread across parcels at illustrative rates, that is ₹4.68 per parcel if 1 in 50 breaks, or ₹2.34 if 1 in 100 breaks. These rates are for the arithmetic only, not a prediction.
Now compare with the step increase: ₹40.00 per parcel. For a heavier jar to pay for a courier step through fewer breakages alone, it would have to prevent one breakage in about every 5.8 parcels. If your breakage rate is anywhere near that, the fix is the packaging, not the glass.
Packaging runs the other way. An illustrative extra ₹10.00 per parcel on better wrap and a snugger box pays for itself if it prevents one breakage in about every 23.4 parcels. That is why the money belongs in the box.
Packing a glass candle for Indian couriers
General packing practice for glass, as our judgement rather than any courier's rule; your courier's own packing guidance comes first.
Hold it still. The jar should not move when you shake the closed box. Wrap it (air-column wrap or several layers of bubble wrap), then fill every gap. Movement is what turns a bump into a crack.
Keep clearance on every side, including the top and bottom. A jar that touches the box wall takes every knock directly. The 11 × 11 × 8 cm box gives side clearance for a 7 cm jar but none on top for an 8 cm-tall one; test the fit, or choose a taller box.
Protect the lid and the wax surface. A lid that can unscrew or lift lets wax get scuffed; a glass dome is a second breakable part and needs its own wrap. Lidless jars need something over the wax surface, such as packing tissue (₹650.00 for 100 sheets, ₹6.50 a sheet).
Mark it, but do not rely on the mark. "Fragile" labels help at the counter; they do not change how a sorting belt treats a box. Put candle safety and care information inside the parcel; the Candle Care Stickers Roll (₹413.00 for 500, ₹699.00 for 1,000) is one way.
Crinkle Paper Filler is out of stock in every colour on 26 September 2026, and the 4.5 x 3 x 2.5 inch box is out of stock; the in-stock packaging is linked in the picks below. What good packaging looks like when you receive glass from a supplier is in the inbound packaging guide.

When a heavy jar is worth it
Heavy glass is not wrong; it is wrong for the first months of an online-only brand. It earns its place in four situations:
1. Sold in person. At markets, pop-ups and your own studio, a heavy jar's weight in the hand is part of the sale and there is no courier step.
2. Sold to shops in bulk. Many candles in one carton spread freight across units, and a shelf rewards presence. Ask your courier or transporter for carton rates.
3. Gifting at a price that absorbs the step. A bridal or corporate gift candle priced well above your everyday range can carry a second weight step and a rigid gift box; price the step in.
4. Large candles that start in a higher step anyway. A 500 g or 700 g candle is already over 0.5 kg; the question is only whether the jar and lid push it one step further. Weigh and check.
Argued against our own interest: we sell the Apothecary dome-lid jars, the clip-top and the 600 g borosilicate jar, and they look wonderful. For your first online range, do not start with them. Start light, measure, and let your own numbers tell you when a heavy jar will pay.
CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the heavy statement jars and the light jars on this page, and the packaging, and does not sell finished candles. We are telling you not to launch online with our dearest jars, that none of our listings states a jar weight, and that we cannot give you a per-parcel cost for our own bubble roll without its length.
Every price and per-unit figure was verified on CSI's live store on 26 September 2026; every pack in the pick tables is in stock on that date, and out-of-stock packaging is named. Capacity, heat and lid wording is quoted from the product pages.
Courier charges (₹60.00 and ₹40.00 per step), the 0.5 kg step, the 5,000 divisor, packaging weights, breakage rates (1 in 50, 1 in 100) and the ₹10.00 packaging upgrade are illustrative worked-example inputs, not quotes or data; the recommendation is editorial judgement. CSI dispatches from Pune and does not publish freight rates. For bulk pricing, GST invoicing, and MSDS and IFRA documentation on request, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.
