Buyer question · Decorative mould candles
A container candle hides its oil in a jar. A mould candle has to stand up, release cleanly and keep its petals, with the oil inside it. How much it can hold depends on the wax, the shape and the oil, and no ceiling for pillar or mould wax is published in our data. This page gives you the test that finds your limit, and prices it.
100 g
of oil runs a full 6–10% ladder in five illustrative 250 g pillars · 15 + 17.5 + 20 + 22.5 + 25 g · CSI live pricing, September 2026
Quick answers — read this first
How much fragrance oil can I add to mould candles? There is no published ceiling for pillar or mould waxes in our data. Ask for the wax maker's stated maximum first, then test 6–10% as a labelled range. The highest load that still releases clean and dry is your working limit. See the ladder.

What does too much oil do to a mould candle? In general practice: oily or "sweating" surfaces, a softer candle, poorer release, mottling, and fine detail that breaks. These are common effects, not measured CSI results. See what excess oil does.

Can I use container soy wax in moulds? Container soy such as Luxury Soy Wax Chunks is made for jars. Its 13% ceiling is a container rating. For moulds, Soy Pillar Wax is made for pillar and designer candles.

How do I know how much oil my mould needs? Weigh the mould's fill: water first, then confirm with one wax pour. Multiply by the load. Cavity weights are not published for any CSI mould.
The short answer
The honest answer: No pillar or mould-wax fragrance ceiling is in our data. Treat 6–10% as a test range, ask for the wax maker's maximum on WhatsApp, and let a release-and-surface test set your number.
The test: Five illustrative 250 g pillars at 6/7/8/9/10% use exactly 100 g of oil and 1,150 g of wax. With Gardenia, the whole test is ₹3,575.82 including mould, sealer, wicks and tools.
Weighing: Fill the mould with water, weigh it, then confirm with a first wax pour — wax is lighter than water. Oil = fill weight × load.
The mould-candle load ladder — five pillars, one 100 g bottle 6%15 g oil7%17.5 g oil8%20 g oil9%22.5 g oil10%25 g oil Illustrative 250 g pillars: 15 + 17.5 + 20 + 22.5 + 25 = 100 g of oil. The highest load that still releases clean, dry and firm is your ceiling for that oil in that wax. 6–10% is a labelled test range — no fragrance ceiling for pillar or mould waxes is published in our data
Five pours of the same oil in the same mould and wax, one load step apart. Each 250 g pillar is illustrative — use your own mould's weighed fill. Because 6 + 7 + 8 + 9 + 10 = 40, and 40% of 250 g is 100 g, a single 100 g bottle runs the whole ladder with nothing left over, so plan an extra 50 g if you want a re-pour.
Straight answer
I'm making decorative mould candles. How much fragrance oil can I add without affecting the candle's structure?
There is no single published number, and we will not invent one. No fragrance ceiling for pillar or mould waxes is in our data; the only two published in this series are for container soy (Luxury Soy Wax Chunks up to 13%, CSI 464 up to 10%), and they do not transfer to moulds. So do two things. First, ask us for the wax maker's stated maximum for the wax you use, such as Soy Pillar Wax. Second, run a load ladder: the same oil at 6%, 7%, 8%, 9% and 10% in the same mould. In five illustrative 250 g pillars that is 15, 17.5, 20, 22.5 and 25 g of oil — exactly one 100 g bottle. Too much oil in a moulded candle commonly shows up as an oily or sweating surface, a softer body, a poorer release and fine detail that snaps. The highest load that still releases clean, dry and firm, and stays that way after a week, is your working limit for that oil in that wax. Weigh your mould's fill first; cavity weights are not published for any CSI mould.
One line: no published number — five pillars, one 100 g bottle, and the highest load that still releases clean is yours.
The wax made for this job: Soy Pillar Wax, listed for pillar and designer candles — 500 g ₹300.00, 1 kg ₹600.00, 5 kg ₹3,000.00, 10 kg ₹6,000.00. The five-pillar test ladder needs 1,150 g, so 1 kg + 500 g (₹900.00). Its fragrance ceiling is not in our data; ask on WhatsApp before you test.

Why there is no single number

A jar holds a candle together. A moulded candle has to hold itself together, and the oil is part of what it is made of.

Fragrance oil is a liquid carried inside the wax. In a container candle, a slightly soft or oily wax is hidden by the glass. In a pillar or decorative mould candle, the wax is the whole structure: it has to set hard, shrink away from the mould so it releases, hold sharp petals and ridges, and stay dry to the touch on a shelf. How much oil a given wax can carry while doing all of that depends on three things at once — the wax, the shape (thin petals and deep detail are more demanding than a plain cylinder) and the oil (oils differ in how readily wax holds them). That is why nobody can honestly give you one percentage for "mould candles".

It is also why the ceilings you may have seen on our container waxes do not apply here. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated up to 13% and CSI 464 up to 10%, but both are container waxes: soft, made to stick to glass. They are not designed to release from a mould, so those figures say nothing about a moulded rose. For the waxes that are used in moulds — Soy Pillar Wax, Fully Refined Paraffin Wax Pellets, Beeswax Pellets and Microcrystalline Wax Slab — no fragrance ceiling is published in our data.

Luxury Soy Wax Chunks (container, for comparison) 1 kg ₹599.00 ₹599.00 Up to 13% — a container rating

One practical note on that table. Stearic acid is commonly added to soy and paraffin to harden a moulded candle and help it release, and makers often reach for it when they want to carry more oil. CSI's stearic acid was out of stock on the pull date, so this plan does not rely on it. If you already use it, keep your proportion constant across the ladder so it does not muddy the result.

What excess oil commonly does

These are the signs makers commonly see when a moulded candle carries more oil than its wax and shape can hold. They are general candle-making practice, not measured results on CSI products, and some can have other causes — pour temperature and cooling speed among them. Use them as the checklist for your ladder.

General practice · not measured CSI results · check each pillar at release and after 7 days
The structure checklist
What you see When What it commonly means What to try
Oily film or droplets on the surface ("sweating") At release or after days on the shelf The wax is not holding all the oil Drop one load step; re-test
Candle sticks in the mould, or tears on release At release Softer set; detail gripping the silicone Lower load, cooler cure, longer set time
Soft body that dents with a fingernail After 24 hours Oil softening the wax Lower load or a harder wax
Petals or ridges snapping At release or in handling Weak detail, often at thin points Lower load; test the shape at the next step down
Mottling or blotches After cure Commonly linked to oil and cooling in some waxes Note it; decide if it is a look you can sell
Yellowing or browning over weeks Over time Vanilla-type oils commonly discolour wax Test and photograph at day 1 and day 14
The common mistake: judging the pillar on release day. A candle can come out of the mould clean and dry, then sweat three days later on a shelf. Always check each ladder pillar again after a week — wrapped the way you will sell it, since packaging can trap oil against the surface. A load that fails at day 7 fails.

Weigh the mould first

No CSI mould lists its fill weight. Your scale does.

Every oil figure starts with the weight of the finished candle, and that is set by the mould. CSI lists sizes for the pillar moulds (for example Tall 11.2 × 6.3 cm and Short 8.6 × 6.5 cm) but not how many grams they hold, and nothing for the decorative moulds. So weigh it. Seal any wick hole with Candle Mold Sealer (₹472.00), fill the mould with water to the pour line, and weigh the water. Wax is lighter than water, so the water weight is an upper bound: make one plain wax pour, weigh the candle, and use that number from then on.

Oil = fill weight × load · use your own weighed fill
Oil per candle, by fill weight and load
If your mould holds 6% 7% 8% 9% 10%
50 g 3 g 3.5 g 4 g 4.5 g 5 g
100 g 6 g 7 g 8 g 9 g 10 g
150 g 9 g 10.5 g 12 g 13.5 g 15 g
250 g 15 g 17.5 g 20 g 22.5 g 25 g
400 g 24 g 28 g 32 g 36 g 40 g

The 250 g and 400 g rows are the illustrative pillar sizes used on this page; the smaller rows cover typical decorative shapes. For multi-cavity moulds, weigh one cavity and multiply by the number of cavities you fill. At these small weights, a scale reading to 0.1 g matters: 7% of 50 g is 3.5 g, and a 1 g error is nearly a 2-point change in load.

The five-pillar test ladder

Here is the ladder with Gardenia as the example oil, in the illustrative 250 g pillar. Oil costs are at Gardenia's 100 g rate (₹4.33 a gram) and wax at ₹600.00 a kilo. The oil costs are small; the reason to run the ladder is the last column.

Ask for the wax maker's maximumBefore you pour, message us for the stated maximum of the wax you are using. If it is below 10%, stop your ladder there.
2
Pour one pillar per load, same everything elseSame wax batch, same pour temperature, same room, same wick. Weigh oil and wax on a scale (₹354.00) and check temperatures with a pen thermometer (₹354.00). Only the load changes.
3
Let each set fullyDo not rush release. A pillar pulled early can tear at any load, which would ruin the comparison.
4
Release and scoreFor each pillar note: clean release (yes/no), surface dry or oily, firm or soft, detail intact. Photograph each one.
5
Wait a week, score againStore the five as you would sell them. Check for sweating, softening and colour change at day 7.
6
Burn the passesOnly now burn the pillars that passed on structure, and compare scent. Pick the lowest load that gives you the scent you want — not the highest that survives.
7
Repeat per oil and per shapeYour limit is for that oil, that wax and that shape. A new oil, or a mould with thinner detail, gets its own short ladder — often just the two loads either side of your usual one.

The mould, sealer and tools are one-off purchases; a second oil's ladder costs only its 100 g bottle and about 1.2 kg of wax. Wick size for a given pillar diameter is not published in our data, so treat your first pillar as a wick check too. Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made are ₹12.00 each at every pack size; the Braided Wick Roll (61 m with 100 tabs, ₹706.82) suits you once you know your length.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. The easy advice for a supplier is "more oil, stronger candle". For a moulded candle, that advice costs you twice: every extra point of load is more oil bought, and past the wax's comfortable limit it is a sweating, soft or broken candle you cannot sell. A decorative candle is often bought for how it looks as much as how it smells. If 7% holds the petals and 9% does not, 7% is the right answer for your business.

Moulds, and what each is for

Plain pillar moulds are the right place to run the ladder, because a clean cylinder isolates the oil from the shape. Once you have a working load, re-test it once in your decorative mould, since thin detail is less forgiving.

Say the ladder settles Orchard Pear at 8% in Soy Pillar Wax, and you plan 20 illustrative 400 g pillars. That is 640 g of oil and 7,360 g of wax. With a 3% working allowance, the cheapest listed packs are 1 × 500 g + 1 × 100 g + 1 × 50 g + 1 × 15 g of oil (665 g, ₹2,595.02) and 1 × 5 kg + 3 × 1 kg of Soy Pillar Wax (₹4,800.00). Twenty Cotton Braided wicks add ₹240.00. Materials for the run: ₹7,635.02, or ₹381.75 per pillar, before the mould you already own, labour, packaging, freight and GST. A 1 kg of Orchard Pear would cost ₹3,738.00 and leave 360 g for the next run — the kilo is only worth it if that next run is coming.

The CSI principle
Your load limit belongs to one oil, one wax and one shape.
Change any of the three and the limit can move. Record the ladder result for each combination, and when a new oil or mould joins the range, run the two loads either side of your usual one before you pour a batch.
Decorative candles are a Diwali and November–February wedding-season staple. Diwali falls on 8 November 2026. A ladder needs a week of shelf time before you trust it, so start now. Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. No fragrance ceiling for pillar or mould waxes is published in our data, and we will not invent one. This page gives you a test that finds your own limit, and prices it.

Oil and wax prices come from live CSI listings pulled on 24 September 2026; mould, sealer and wick prices from the 24–25 September 2026 pull; scale and thermometer prices are Blog 760's figures verified on 10 September 2026. Stearic acid was out of stock on the pull date. Costings are arithmetic on those prices.

The effects of excess oil described here are general candle-making practice, not measured CSI results. The 250 g and 400 g pillars are illustrative; mould fill weights are not published. The 6–10% ladder is a labelled test range. For the wax maker's stated maximum, MSDS and IFRA documentation, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

How much fragrance oil should I use in a pillar candle?
No pillar-wax ceiling is published in our data. Ask for the wax maker's stated maximum, then test 6–10% in steps. At 8%, a 250 g pillar holds 20 g of oil and a 400 g pillar 32 g.
Why is my mould candle sweating oil?
In general practice, an oily surface means the wax is not holding all the oil — often the load is too high for that wax and shape. Drop one load step and re-test, and check again after a week.
Does fragrance oil make candles soft?
Oil is a liquid inside the wax, so in general practice higher loads can make a candle softer. In a container it is hidden; in a moulded candle it shows as denting, poor release or broken detail.
What wax is best for silicone mould candles?
For soy, Soy Pillar Wax, which CSI lists for pillar and designer candles (₹600.00 a kilo). Container soys like Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are made to stick to glass, not release from a mould. Paraffin and beeswax are also listed; none has a published ceiling in our data.
How do I calculate fragrance oil for a candle mould?
Weigh the mould's fill (water first, then confirm with a wax pour), then multiply by the load: a 150 g fill at 7% needs 10.5 g of oil. Cavity weights are not published for CSI moulds.
Can I add more fragrance to pillar candles with stearic acid?
Stearic acid is commonly used to harden moulded candles, but CSI's stearic acid was out of stock on the pull date. Whatever you add, re-run the load ladder — additives change what the wax can hold.

Non-price figures and assumptions: No fragrance-load ceiling for Soy Pillar Wax, paraffin, beeswax or microcrystalline wax is published in our data; 6–10% is a labelled test range. The only published ceilings in this series are for container waxes: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks up to 13% and CSI 464 up to 10%, the wax makers' stated formulation maximums. The 250 g and 400 g pillars are illustrative; mould fill and cavity weights are not published. Effects of excess oil (sweating, softness, poor release, mottling, discolouration) are general candle-making practice, not measured CSI results. The 3% allowance is a working assumption. No throw measurements are published for any oil. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November. Prices and availability change — the linked product pages are always authoritative.
