Scaling · Stock or made to order
Made to order, your money sits in raw materials that can still become any scent. Finished stock turns part of that money into specific candles in specific scents, ready to ship. Purchasing changes in three ways: a one-time build, scent-by-scent replenishment and packaging bought at pour time.
₹17,064.61
more held in the example once finished stock is added (₹56,830.71 → ₹73,895.32) · CSI live pricing, September 2026 · packaging at example prices
Quick answers — read this first
How does moving to finished inventory change what I buy? You make a one-time build purchase of materials for the finished stock (117 candles in our example), then you replenish scent by scent as finished units sell. Labels and lids move from order time to pour time. Oil gets committed to scents earlier, so top scents need bigger packs.

Does finished stock need more cash? Yes, but less than you might fear. In the example, 3 weeks of raw materials for made-to-order is ₹56,830.71. Two weeks of finished candles per scent plus 2 weeks of raw materials is ₹73,895.32, or ₹17,064.61 more.

How many finished candles should I keep per scent? About two weeks of that scent's sales, with a floor so slow scents are never empty. We use a floor of four. The top scent in the example holds 21. The slowest holds 4.

Should I stock everything or only bestsellers? Often only the head. Stocking the top five scents finished and making the rest to order holds 77 finished candles instead of 117. See the hybrid.
The short answer
Build: One-time purchase for 117 finished candles: 22.39 kg wax, 1.95 kg oil across scents, 117 jars and wicks, plus labels at pour.
Replenish: Trigger by finished units per scent, not by raw-material level. Pour a batch of about two weeks' sales when a scent hits its floor.
Packaging: Labels and lids at pour time, boxes and mailers at dispatch. CSI does not list labels, lids or boxes, so use your own supplier's quotes.
What the same 240-candle month ties up — made to order against finished stock Wax Jars Oil (34 × 100 g) Made to order · ₹56,830.71 Finished candles (117) Wax Jars Oil (23 × 100 g) Finished stock · ₹73,895.32 3 weeks of raw materials 2 weeks of sales per scent (min 4) + 2 weeks raw Example: 12 scents, 240 candles a month, 200 g at 8%. Wicks (under ₹1,000) are counted in the totals, not drawn. Packaging uses example prices you replace.
Made to order holds more raw material because it has no finished buffer, so the raw shelf has to absorb every order. Finished stock holds less raw material, since the finished candles are the buffer, but adds the candles themselves. The net increase in this example is modest. The bigger change is that the finished part is committed to specific scents.
Straight answer
I'm moving from made-to-order candles to keeping finished inventory — how does that change how much wax, fragrance and packaging I should purchase?
Three things change. First, you make a one-time build purchase to pour the finished stock. In our example of 12 scents and 240 candles a month, holding about two weeks of sales per scent (never fewer than four) means 117 finished candles, which need 22.39 kg of wax, 1.95 kg of oil, 117 jars and 117 wicks on top of your normal month. Second, replenishment becomes scent by scent. You pour a batch when a scent's finished count hits its floor, so your top scents need oil in larger packs and your tail can stay in 100 g. Third, packaging moves to pour time: labels and lids go on as you pour, while boxes can wait for dispatch. Because the finished candles now act as the buffer, you can hold fewer weeks of raw materials, two instead of three in the example. So total inventory rises less than you might expect: ₹56,830.71 made to order against ₹73,895.32 with finished stock, with packaging at example prices. Many makers stock only their best sellers and make the tail to order. That keeps 77 finished candles instead of 117, and it is where the demand ranking earns its keep.
One line: finished stock is a buffer made of candles — it lets the raw shelf shrink, but it commits oil to scents early.
Your top scent carries the most finished stock, so it is the first to outgrow 100 g bottles. Blue Ocean is priced flat from 50 g (₹4.94–₹4.96/g), so moving it to the 500 g at ₹2,478.00 costs nothing extra per gram and covers about 30 candles, which is enough for a full two-week batch of the top scent in the example.

What each model holds

Made to order keeps your money flexible. Finished stock keeps your customer waiting less. Each has a purchasing pattern of its own.

Under made to order, nothing is committed until a customer pays. Your shelf holds wax, jars, wicks and bottles of oil, and any of them can become any candle. The price of that flexibility is that the raw shelf must cover every order that might arrive before your next delivery, and that the customer waits for the pour, the cure and the dispatch. Under finished stock, a candle is already cured and labelled, so the customer waits only for dispatch. The price of that speed is that each finished candle is a specific scent in a specific jar, and it cannot become anything else.

Here is the example we use throughout. It is illustrative, not CSI data: 12 scents selling 240 candles a month, all in a 200 g White Matte jar at an 8% load in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks. The oil is priced at the median in-stock 100 g rate across the catalogue, ₹629.00 per 100 g (₹6.29/g), which puts the material cost at ₹287.56 a candle. Packaging uses example figures, a ₹8.00 label and a ₹25.00 box. Those are placeholders for your own printer's and box supplier's quotes, not prices CSI lists.

Example · 240 candles a month · 12 scents · wax, oil, wick, jar at CSI prices · packaging at example prices

Total held ₹56,830.71 ₹73,895.32

Finished stock holds ₹17,064.61 more, about 30% more, because the raw shelf shrinks while the finished shelf grows. That is the part most makers do not expect. The finished candles are safety stock. A maker holding two weeks of finished candles does not also need three weeks of raw materials to protect against a surge, because the surge is served from the shelf while the next batch is poured.

Oil has a floor that does not shrink
Each scent needs at least one bottle open whichever model you use, which is 12 × 100 g in the example however few candles a scent sells. That floor is why cutting slow scents matters more than any change of model. I Have 30 Candle Fragrances but Most Sales Come from 10 — How Should I Change My Fragrance Oil Purchasing Quantities Based on Actual Demand? shows how to move the tail to 50 g, which costs the same per gram as 100 g for most oils.

The one-time build

The switch is not free, because you have to pour the finished stock before it can sell. That means one month where you buy for normal sales plus the build. Set a target for each scent first. We use two weeks of that scent's sales, rounded up, with a floor of four so a slow scent always has something to ship:

Finished-stock targets · two weeks of sales, minimum 4 · 4.33 weeks per month
How many finished candles per scent
Scent rank Candles / month Candles / week Finished target Weeks of finished cover
1 45 10.38 21 2.02
2 38 8.77 18 2.05
3 32 7.38 15 2.03
4 26 6.00 12 2.00
5 22 5.08 11 2.17
6 18 4.15 9 2.17
7 15 3.46 7 2.02
8 12 2.77 6 2.17
9 10 2.31 5 2.17
10 9 2.08 5 2.41
11 7 1.62 4 2.48
12 6 1.38 4 2.89
Total 240 55.38 117 2.11

The floor matters more than it looks. The slowest scents sell under two candles a week, so four candles gives them nearly three weeks of cover. That is more than the top scent's two. Across the range, 117 finished candles is about 2.11 weeks of total sales. The build purchase for those candles, on top of the normal month, is:

Build purchase for 117 finished candles · 4% allowance on wax and oil · CSI live pricing, September 2026
What the switch adds to one month's buying
Material Quantity How to buy it Cost
Luxury Soy Wax Chunks 22.39 kg 2 × 10 kg + 3 × 1 kg (23 kg) ₹13,795.00
Fragrance oil, per scent 1.95 kg total Per scent: 16.64 g × its target About ₹12,245.88 at ₹6.29/g
White Matte Glass Jars 117 24 × pack of 5 ₹8,496.00
Eco Thin C1 wicks 117 1 × 100 + 1 × 20 ₹708.00
Labels (example ₹8.00, replace with your quote) 117 Your printer ₹936.00

The build is a one-off. After it, your monthly purchases go back to matching sales, because each candle sold is replaced by one poured. Plan the build for a quiet month, not for the run-up to a festival. Pouring a finished-stock build and a festive surge in the same four weeks doubles the pressure on your melter and your cash at once. With Diwali on 8 November 2026, a maker switching now should build only the top scents before the festival and the rest in the quieter weeks after. My Candle Sales Double During Diwali — How Early Should I Start Increasing Wax, Fragrance Oil, Wick and Jar Inventory Before the Season? sets out the festive calendar.

Building the whole range at full depth on day one. A maker switches to stock and pours a month of every scent. The tail scents then sit for eight to twelve weeks. Build to the targets in the table, which are two weeks with a floor, and let real sell-through tell you which scents deserve more depth.

Replenishing by scent

Under made to order, you reorder raw materials when the shelf runs low. Under finished stock, the trigger moves one step closer to the customer. You pour a batch of a scent when its finished count reaches a set level, and you buy raw materials to feed those batches. The purchasing question then becomes how big each scent's batch is, which decides how big its oil pack needs to be.

Replenishment batch = two weeks of sales · oil at 16.64 g a candle (16 g + 4%)
Batch sizes and the oil pack each scent needs
Scent rank Batch (candles) Oil per batch Pack that covers a batch Why
1 21 349.44 g 500 g Several batches per pack, same ₹/g as 100 g for most oils
2–3 18–15 249.60–299.52 g 500 g Same logic, and fewer orders
4–6 9–12 149.76–199.68 g 2 × 100 g or 500 g Depends on whether the oil has a real 500 g or 1 kg break
7–12 4–7 66.56–116.48 g 100 g One bottle covers one or two batches
1
Set a floor and a batch for every scentFloor: the finished count at which you pour. One week of sales or two candles, whichever is higher, is a sensible start. Batch: about two weeks of sales. Both are working assumptions to tune.
2
Count finished units weeklyEvery scent at or below its floor goes on this week's pour list. Group the pour list by wax and jar so one melt serves several scents.
3
Check oil before you pourEach batch needs its batch size × 16.64 g. If the open bottle cannot cover it, that scent's oil is the item to reorder today, not the wax.
4
Top up shared materials to two weeksWax, jars and wicks serve every scent. Keep them at about two weeks of total pouring and re-count them in candles, as in I'm Running Out of One Raw Material While Having Months of Another — How Do I Synchronise Wax, Fragrance, Wick and Jar Purchasing with Actual Production?.
5
Order labels in step with poursLabels go on at pour time now. Hold enough for two weeks of pours per scent, not a year's print run of every scent.
6
Review floors monthlyIf a scent keeps hitting its floor mid-week, raise its batch. If its finished stock sits for a month, lower it or move the scent to made to order.
The CSI principle
Stock the candles people buy without thinking. Make the ones they choose carefully.
Bestsellers turn over fast enough that a shelf of finished candles is always fresh and always earning. Tail scents sell in ones and twos. A finished shelf of them is just oil committed early. Let the sales curve decide which side of the line each scent sits on.

Packaging moves to pour time

Made to order lets you buy most packaging just in time, because each order is packed as it is made. Finished stock splits packaging into two groups. Pour-time packaging, meaning the label, the warning sticker and the lid if you use one, has to be on hand for every batch, so it scales with finished stock and with the number of scents. Dispatch-time packaging, meaning the box, tissue, filler and mailer, can still be bought against orders, because it goes on when the candle leaves.

CSI does not list labels, lids (apart from jars sold with a cap, such as the 200 ml Salsa jar with golden lug cap and the Yankee 130 ml jar with clear cap), boxes or mailers. So every packaging figure here is an example you replace with your own quote. The one packaging item CSI does list is Premium Packing Tissue Paper, at ₹650.00 for 100 sheets of 50 × 75 cm (₹6.50 a sheet). It is a dispatch-time item, so buy it against orders rather than against finished stock.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. The switch to finished stock makes some makers buy everything bigger, including wax and jars from us. You do not need to. Because finished candles are now the buffer, your raw shelf can shrink, from three weeks to two in the example. On our flat-priced lines, buying more wax or jars at once saves nothing per unit either. The build is a one-time purchase, and after it your monthly buying should look much as it did before.

The hybrid most makers land on

Pure finished stock across every scent is rarely the right answer for a small or mid-sized brand. The common landing point is a hybrid: stock the head, make the tail. In the example, stocking only the top five scents finished means 77 candles on the shelf (₹22,757.81 including example labels) instead of 117 (₹34,580.05). Those five scents sell 163 of the 240 candles a month, 67.9% of sales, so most customers get a candle that ships at once. The other seven scents keep the made-to-order flexibility, in 100 g or 50 g bottles.

The hybrid also makes the purchasing split clean. Stocked scents move to 500 g or 1 kg oil packs sized to their batches. Made-to-order scents stay in small bottles. Wax, jars and wicks serve both and are counted together. Reclassify every quarter, promoting a made-to-order scent to stock when it climbs into the top five and demoting a stocked scent when it falls out.

What finished stock costs you besides cash

Commitment. Oil in a bottle can become any candle. Oil in a finished candle is that scent in that jar forever. If a scent stops selling, finished stock of it goes through the discontinuation process in I Want to Discontinue a Slow-Selling Candle — How Do I Use the Remaining Fragrance Oil, Wax, Jars and Packaging Without Wasting Inventory? rather than simply being used elsewhere.

Space and handling. A hundred finished candles take far more shelf space than the wax and oil they came from, and they need protecting from heat, dust and knocks. That is a real cost in a home workshop, even though no rupee figure attaches to it here.

Age. Finished stock should rotate oldest first. Mark each batch with its pour date and ship in that order. A two-week target keeps candles moving. It is when targets creep to two months that stock starts sitting.

The upside you are buying. Candles ship at once, cure happens on your shelf instead of in the customer's wait, and pouring moves from reactive single orders to planned batches, which is easier on your melter and your day. For most growing brands that is worth the extra inventory. Just buy it deliberately, scent by scent. For the inventory capital at higher volumes, see I Want to Grow from 500 to 2,000 Candles per Month — How Much Working Capital Will I Need Just for Raw-Material Inventory?.

The switch does not change how much you sell. It changes when you commit money to a specific scent.
Made to order, your shelf holds possibilities. Finished stock, it holds decisions. Stock only the decisions your sales have already made for you.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. Moving to finished stock can look like a reason to buy more of everything. This page shows the raw shelf can shrink once finished candles act as the buffer, and that the extra spend is a one-time build rather than a permanently larger order.

Every oil and wax price on this page comes from CSI live listings pulled on 24 September 2026. Tissue and capped-jar references come from the same catalogue pull, and wick and White Matte jar prices were verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026. The oil in the example is priced at the median in-stock 100 g rate. Totals are arithmetic on those prices, shown to two decimals.

The 12-scent sales split, the two-week targets, the floor of four, the weeks of raw cover and the ₹8.00 label and ₹25.00 box are working assumptions and example prices. Replace them with your own. Frequently asked questions

should I make candles to order or keep stock
Keep finished stock of scents that sell steadily, because they ship at once and cure on your shelf. Make slow scents to order so their oil stays flexible. Most growing brands end up with this hybrid.
how much finished candle inventory should I keep
About two weeks of each scent's sales, with a small floor (we use four) so slow scents are never empty. In our example of 240 candles a month across 12 scents, that is 117 finished candles.
does keeping candle stock need more working capital
Some, but less than it seems, because finished candles replace part of your raw-material buffer. In the example, total inventory rises from ₹56,830.71 to ₹73,895.32 with packaging at example prices.
when should I buy candle labels and packaging
Labels and lids at pour time, in step with your batches, because they go on finished candles. Boxes, tissue and mailers at dispatch, against orders. Do not print a year of every scent's labels up front.
how big should a candle production batch be
For a stocked scent, about two weeks of its sales. That is 21 candles for a scent selling 45 a month. The batch size then decides the oil pack. For most oils, 500 g covers several batches at the same price per gram as 100 g.
how do I switch from made to order to stock without overbuying
Set per-scent targets first, buy one build for those targets in a quiet month, then replenish only what sells. Consider stocking only your top five scents. I Have 30 Candle Fragrances but Most Sales Come from 10 — How Should I Change My Fragrance Oil Purchasing Quantities Based on Actual Demand? shows how to rank them.
Stock the head, make the tail
Buy the build once. Replenish scent by scent. Let the finished shelf be your buffer.
93 fragrance oils from 15 g to 1 kg, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹599.00 a kilo, Eco wicks at ₹5.90 and White Matte jars at ₹354.00 for 5. Send us your targets and batch sizes and we will quote the build.
