I'm Producing 1,000 Triple-Wick Candles — How Many Wicks Should I Order if I Also Need Enough for Development and QC Samples?
Aktie
How many QC samples should a 1,000-candle run have? There is no published standard. A practical plan is one burn per melt batch, so a fault in any batch is caught: 32 candles here. One per 100 would be 11. QC plans compared.
What does it cost? Eco Thin C1 3 × 1,000 + 2 × 100 + 50 + 2 × 20 = ₹19,411.00. Thick C2 would be ₹31,057.60; Cotton Braided ₹39,480.00. Add 83 packs of stickers (₹8,300.00).
Does CSI sell three-wick jars? No three-wick jars are listed in the catalogue data for this series. The wick and materials maths still work for your own jar; ask on WhatsApp if you need help sourcing containers.
Development, QC and retained: three different samples
Makers often lump every non-sold candle into one "samples" line. On a triple-wick run that blurs where most of the extra wicks go, and it makes the allowance impossible to trim next time. Split them by when they are made and what they prove.
| Sample | When | What it proves | Candles | Wicks | Comes out of the run? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Development | Before production | Which wick, spacing and load work in this jar | 12 | 36 | No — poured first |
| QC burn | During production | Each melt batch burns like the approved candle | 32 | 96 | Yes |
| Retained | After production | Reference for complaints, reorders and colour | 5 | 15 | Yes |
Development candles are the most important in a triple-wick candle, because three flames in one jar interact. The pools must merge without the centre overheating, and wick spacing matters as much as wick size. Three candidates with four candles each gives you two candles to burn, one to burn at a different spacing and one to keep. If your client also wants approval samples before you start, they are a fourth category; the samples-before-production guide covers how to budget them.
QC candles are production candles you burn rather than sell. They catch a batch where the oil was under-weighed, the wax overheated or a wick lot was different. Retained candles are production candles you keep, unburned, as the reference for anything that comes back. Both are taken from the 1,000-candle run, so to deliver 1,000 you pour more than 1,000. That is the step most wick orders miss.
Choosing a QC plan
There is no published QC standard for candle batches, and CSI does not publish one. A plan tied to the melt batch makes sense because the melt is where most batch-level variation starts: each batch is its own weighing of wax and oil, its own heating, its own stir. If one batch goes wrong, a batch-level QC burn catches it. With an illustrative 20 kg melter and 600 g candles, one batch pours up to 33 candles.
| QC plan | QC candles | QC wicks | Wax + oil in QC candles (600 g each) | What it can miss |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 per melt batch (this page) | 32 | 96 | 19.2 kg | Nothing batch-level |
| 1 per 100 candles | 11 | 33 | 6.6 kg | A bad batch between samples |
| 1 per 250 candles | 5 | 15 | 3.0 kg | Most single-batch faults |
The batch plan burns 32 candles, about 3.1% of the run, and costs 96 wicks and 19.2 kg of candle. The one-per-100 plan burns 11. The difference is 21 candles: roughly 12.6 kg of wax and oil and 63 wicks. For a corporate or wedding order where one bad batch means a complaint on 33 gifts, many makers would pay that. For your own retail stock, a lighter plan may be enough. Either way, decide it before ordering; it changes the wick, wax and oil totals.
The full wick count
| Line | Basis | Wicks |
|---|---|---|
| Sold candles | 1,000 × 3 | 3,000 |
| Development candles | 3 wick candidates × 4 candles = 12 candles | 36 |
| QC burn per melt batch | 32 batches of up to 33 candles → 32 candles | 96 |
| Retained candles | 5 candles kept from the run | 15 |
| Remelted rejects | 1.5% of 1,037 candles → 16 candles | 48 |
| Setting faults | 2% of 3,111 wicks set | 63 |
| Shelf spare | 1% of 3,000 | 30 |
| Total | 9.6% over the sold count | 3,288 |
Of the 288 extra wicks, 195 come from candle-level lines multiplied by three and only 93 from wick-level lines. That is the triple-wick effect: the more wicks per candle, the more every whole-candle event costs. On a single-wick run the same plan would add roughly a third as much. The single-wick guide and the double-wick guide show the same lines at one and two wicks per candle.
Rounding 3,288 wicks
CSI's wick packs stop at 1,000, so a triple-wick run is always a combination. With flat per-wick prices the cheapest combination is simply the one that lands closest above 3,288:
| Wick | Packs | Price | Per candle (3 wicks) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eco Thin C1 | 3 × 1,000 + 2 × 100 + 50 + 2 × 20 | ₹19,411.00 | ₹17.70 |
| Eco Thick C2 | 3 × 1,000 + 2 × 100 + 4 × 20 + 10 | ₹31,057.60 | ₹28.32 |
| Cotton Braided Ready Made | 3 × 1,000 + 2 × 100 + 50 + 4 × 10 | ₹39,480.00 | ₹36.00 |
| Wick Stickers | 83 × 40 | ₹8,300.00 | ₹7.50 |
Wick type moves the bill by up to ₹20,069.00, far more than any allowance. Stickers are a real cost at this count: ₹8,300.00, or ₹7.50 a candle. Three-wick jars are not listed by CSI, and CSI does not publish wick size or spacing for any diameter, so the wick type is a result of the development candles, not a guess from this table. Stock of three or more 1,000-packs of one wick at the same time is worth confirming on WhatsApp before you fix a production date.
| Pack | Price | Candles (3 wicks) |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | ₹59.00 | 3 |
| 20 | ₹118.00 | 6 |
| 50 | ₹295.00 | 16 |
| 100 | ₹590.00 | 33 |
| 500 | ₹2,950.00 | 166 |
| 1,000 | ₹5,900.00 | 333 |
| Pack | Price | Candles (3 wicks) |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | ₹94.40 | 3 |
| 20 | ₹188.80 | 6 |
| 100 | ₹944.00 | 33 |
| 1,000 | ₹9,440.00 | 333 |
Making the samples pay for themselves
Thirty-six development wicks and ninety-six QC wicks are only worth buying if the candles they go into are recorded. A development candle that was burned but not measured teaches nothing, and a QC burn with no pass or fail rule is just a candle you did not sell. The two logs below are the minimum. Keep them on paper beside the melter or in a spreadsheet; either works if every batch gets a line.
| Field | Example entry | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Candidate and spacing | Thin C1 × 3, triangle spacing (example) | Spacing is half the result on a triple-wick jar |
| Fill weight, wax, load | 600 g · Natural Soy Pearl · 8% | Development must match production |
| Cure checkpoint before burning | Your chosen checkpoint (labelled) | CSI publishes no cure time |
| Pool at each check | Width across and whether the three pools merged | Unmerged pools mean tunnelling later |
| Flame and soot | Height, flicker, any black on the glass | Three flames heat each other |
| Glass temperature by hand | Comfortable to touch or not (observation) | A safety check, not a measurement |
| Decision | Chosen / rejected and why | Stops you re-testing next season |
| Field | Example entry |
|---|---|
| Batch number and date | Batch 14 of 32 · date of pour |
| Wax lot and oil lot | From the bag and bottle labels |
| Oil weighed vs planned | 1.584 kg planned for 33 candles at 48 g |
| QC candle burn result | Pass / fail against the approved development candle |
| Action | Release batch / hold batch / remelt |
The oil line in the QC log is the one that catches most batch faults. At 48 g per 600 g candle, a 33-candle batch needs 1.584 kg of oil; if the log shows 1.3 kg went in, the QC burn will usually confirm what the numbers already say. Weighing on a Candle Making Weighing Scale (₹354.00) for every batch is cheaper than any number of QC wicks. Wastage and margin on larger orders shows how batch records feed back into quoting the next job.
Wax and oil at triple-wick scale
Triple-wick candles are large. CSI publishes no three-wick jar or fill, so this series uses an illustrative 600 g finished candle; replace it with your weighed fill. At 8%, one candle is 48 g of oil and 552 g of wax. The development, QC and retained candles all need wax and oil too:
| Step | Candles | Finished | Wax | Oil |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sold candles | 1,000 | 600.00 kg | 552.00 kg | 48.00 kg |
| + development, QC and retained | 1,049 | 629.40 kg | 579.05 kg | 50.35 kg |
| + 3% pour loss | — | 648.28 kg | 596.42 kg | 51.86 kg |
| Rounded | — | — | 597 kg | 52 kg |
These quantities are beyond what most makers would build from retail packs. On listed prices, 597 kg of Natural Soy Pearl Wax is 11 × 50 kg + 4 × 10 kg + 5 kg + 2 × 1 kg = ₹2,53,656.00, and 52 kg of British Rose as 52 × 1 kg bottles would be ₹1,59,536.00. Oils are listed only up to 1 kg per bottle, and 52 bottles of one oil will not be sitting in stock together, so for this run ask CSI on WhatsApp for a quote; no volume discount figure is published, so do not assume one. Planning around 100 kg of wax and a 10,000-piece festive order cover procurement at this scale.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. This page recommends buying under ₹550 of test wicks before any bulk wick, and it says plainly that CSI lists no three-wick jar, publishes no wick spacing, and cannot supply 52 kg of one oil off the shelf.
Wick, sticker and melter prices are Blog 760's and the catalogue addendum's figures, verified 10 September 2026 and re-checked 24–25 September 2026. Wax and oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026. Counts and totals are arithmetic on the stated plan.
The development plan, the batch-level QC plan, the 20 kg batch of 33 candles, the 600 g candle, the retained count, remelt and fault rates and 3% loss are labelled working assumptions. There is no published candle QC standard. For a quote at this scale, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.
