I'm Scaling My Candle Business — At What Point Should I Move From Retail Packs of Jars to Wholesale Cartons?
Aktie
Do CSI's jar listings get cheaper in bigger packs? Mostly not. 43 multi-pack container listings charge the same per unit at every pack size, including the 200 ml Matte family (₹70.80) and the 150 g clear jar with golden lid (₹94.40). The clearest exceptions are the clear 200ml Salsa jar, Tea Lights Aluminium and Mini Glass Jars.
What are the break points? Clear 200ml Salsa: buy the 50 Pcs from 36 jars. Tea lights: the 50 from 31 cups, the 100 from 81, the 500 from 451. Mini Glass Jars (black lid): the 25 from 21, the 50 from 46.
What if my jar is flat-priced? Then bigger orders save only your fixed cost per order: in our worked example, ₹600.00 per order adds ₹30.00 per jar on 20 jars and ₹6.00 on 100. Beyond the largest listed pack, ask for a written quote on WhatsApp.

Which CSI listings actually get cheaper in bigger packs
"Wholesale" suggests a lower price per piece. On CSI's container listings on 26 September 2026, that is the exception. Of the listings sold in more than one pack size, 43 charge exactly the same per unit whichever pack you choose. That includes the whole 200 ml Matte, Glossy and Frosted family (₹70.80 at 5 or 10), the 150 g clear jar with golden lid (₹94.40 at 10 or 20), the coloured 150 g jars and the coloured 200ml Salsa jars. Buying the bigger pack there saves you clicks, not rupees.
| Listing | Per unit, smallest pack | Per unit, largest pack | Where the ladder steps |
|---|---|---|---|
| 200ml Salsa clear (5 / 50 / 100 Pcs) | ₹40.12 | ₹29.50 | 5 → 50 Pcs; 100 = two 50s |
| Tea Lights Aluminium (10 / 50 / 100 / 500) | ₹9.44 | ₹6.02 | every step |
| Mini Glass Jars, black lid (5 / 25 / 50 / 100) | ₹25.96 | ₹21.24 | every step |
| Mini Glass Jars, golden lid | ₹25.96 | ₹21.24 | Golden 25 priced as the 50: skip it |
| Colorful Votive Glass Jars, Black (1 / 5 / 10) | ₹35.40 | ₹31.86 | 1 → 5; 10 = two 5s |
| 200 ml Matte family, 150 g jars, coloured Salsa and 40 more | same | same | no step: flat per unit |
The same check applies to everything else you buy in bulk. It is worth doing once for your whole bill of materials, because some ladders run the other way.
| Item | Smaller size | Larger size | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 500 g ₹0.52/g | 1 kg to 10 kg ₹0.51/g | one small step at 1 kg, then flat to 10 kg |
| Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 | 500 g and 1 kg ₹0.65/g | 5 kg and 10 kg ₹0.64/g | about 2% less per gram from 5 kg |
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | 500 g ₹299.00 | 10 kg ₹5,999.00 | the 10 kg costs ₹19.00 more than twenty 500 g bags (₹5,980.00); the 1 kg costs ₹1.00 more than two 500 g |
| Eco Candle Wicks C1 / C2 | ₹5.90 / ₹9.44 each | same at 1,000 | flat per wick |
| Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made | ₹12.00 each | same at 1,000 | flat per wick |
| Performance Wooden Wicks | ₹59.00 each | ₹41.30 each | real ladder; the 50's "Save 25%" works out to 20% |
State these as facts and move on: several of CSI's fragrance oils also cost the same per gram at 500 g and 1 kg, and on some, such as Jasmine, the 1 kg costs ₹1.00 more than two 500 g packs. Check each oil page before assuming the bigger bottle is the cheaper way to buy.
Finding the break point on a listing
Where a ladder exists, the break point is simply the order size at which the bigger pack costs less than the smaller packs you would otherwise buy. You find it by pricing both routes at your real order size.
| Listing | Move up to | From | Because |
|---|---|---|---|
| 200ml Salsa clear | 50 Pcs | 36 jars | ₹1,475.00 against eight 5 Pcs at ₹1,604.80 |
| Tea Lights Aluminium | Pack of 50 | 31 cups | ₹330.40 against four 10s at ₹377.60 (three 10s, ₹283.20, still cover 30) |
| Tea Lights Aluminium | Pack of 100 | 81 cups | ₹649.00 against a 50 + three 10s at ₹613.60 for 80 |
| Tea Lights Aluminium | Pack of 500 | 451 cups | ₹3,009.00 against four 100s + a 50 at ₹2,926.40 for 450 |
| Mini Glass Jars, black lid | Pack of 25 | 21 jars | ₹634.25 against five 5s at ₹649.00 |
| Mini Glass Jars, black lid | Pack of 50 | 46 jars | ₹1,180.00 against a 25 + four 5s at ₹1,153.45 for 45 |
| Performance Wooden Wicks | Pack of 50 | 31 wicks (tie) | four 10s cost ₹2,360.00, the same as the 50 |
| Performance Wooden Wicks | Pack of 100 | 71 wicks (tie) | seven 10s cost ₹4,130.00, the same as the 100 |
When the price is flat: your order costs decide
For most CSI jars, the listing gives you no reason to buy more at once. But ordering itself costs money: part of the freight or courier charge behaves like a fixed amount per shipment, someone has to place, receive, unpack and check the order, and every order is one more chance of a delay. That fixed cost per order is spread over however many jars you buy at once.
A worked example with illustrative figures (plug in your own courier quotes; we do not publish freight rates, and couriers commonly bill on actual or volumetric weight, whichever is higher, so check your courier's terms). Suppose each order carries ₹400.00 of freight and handling that does not change much with size, plus one hour of your time valued at ₹200.00: ₹600.00 per order.
| Jars per order | Fixed cost per jar | Jar + fixed cost | Orders a year at 400 jars | Fixed cost a year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20 (two packs of 10) | ₹30.00 (42% on top) | ₹100.80 | 20 | ₹12,000.00 |
| 50 | ₹12.00 | ₹82.80 | 8 | ₹4,800.00 |
| 100 | ₹6.00 (8.5% on top) | ₹76.80 | 4 | ₹2,400.00 |
| 200 | ₹3.00 | ₹73.80 | 2 | ₹1,200.00 |
Moving from 20 at a time to 100 at a time saves ₹9,600.00 a year in this example, with no change in the jar price. That is the real "retail to wholesale" step for a flat-priced jar: not a lower price per piece, but fewer, larger orders. The cost is holding more stock: ₹7,080.00 of jars on the shelf at the start of each 100-jar cycle rather than ₹1,416.00. Going from 100 to 200 saves much less (₹1,200.00 a year) and doubles the stock again, which is why the curve flattens and many makers settle on an order of a few weeks' use.
The practical signals you are ready
The maths tells you when a bigger order is cheaper. These signals tell you whether you are ready to hold it. They are our planning judgement, not industry rules; if any one is missing, stay with smaller, more frequent orders for that jar.
| Signal | What it looks like | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| The jar is proven | fill weight measured, wick bracket passed, full burn-downs done | a carton of the wrong jar is dead stock; see testing a design before buying 1,000 |
| You reorder on a rhythm | the same jar at least twice a month for three months | steady use is what turns a carton into weeks of stock, not months |
| The carton fits your cycle | carton quantity is within about 6–8 weeks of use | beyond that, cash, storage and shelf breakage erode the saving |
| You can store and check it | a dry shelf, space to open and inspect cartons on arrival | damage found late is harder to claim; see the jar QC checklist |
| Cash is not needed elsewhere | wax and oil for the same period are also affordable | jars without wax and oil are not candles |
The fourth signal is easy to underrate. A pack of 10 is opened, checked and used within days; a carton of a few hundred jars sits for weeks, and a chipped or cracked jar found in week five is harder to trace back to delivery. Plan to open and inspect every carton on arrival, and keep the packing until you have. What packaging to expect for glass shipped from another state covers what a well-packed carton looks like.
Making the move without getting stuck
Scaling is rarely one leap. A pattern that works well for small makers is to move one jar at a time, starting with the one you use most.
Start with your top jar only
List your jars by monthly use. Move only the top one to larger orders first, and only if it passes the five signals. Everything else stays on retail packs until it earns the move. This keeps cash and shelf space for the jar that is actually selling, and it gives you one clean test of your storage and receiving process before you repeat it.
Match the carton to the season
On 26 September 2026, Diwali (8 November 2026) is 43 days away and Christmas (25 December 2026) 90. Your monthly use in October and December is not your use in February. A carton that is six weeks of stock in festive season can be four months of stock in the lean weeks after Valentine's Day (14 February 2027). Size carton orders to the season you are buying for, not to your best month.
Keep the retail pack as your safety valve
Even after moving to larger orders, a retail pack is a cheap way to cover a surprise order or to trial a new colour without disturbing your carton stock. On flat-priced listings it costs the same per jar, so there is no penalty for topping up a carton order with a pack of 10.

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells every product named here and does not sell finished candles. This page tells you that most of our jar listings give no discount for bigger packs, that one pack label overstates its saving, that one mini-jar option is priced like the pack twice its size, and that a 10 kg bag of one wax costs more than twenty 500 g bags. Makers who buy on the real numbers stay with a supplier longer.
Every price, per-unit and per-gram figure was verified on CSI's live store on 26 September 2026; every pack in a pick table is in stock on that date, and out-of-stock colours are named. Capacity and heat wording is quoted from the product pages; where a page is silent, we say so.
