Judge hot throw against a named room, not in general. A 3.0 × 3.3 m bedroom holds 28.7 m³ of air; a 5.5 × 4.2 m living room holds 69.3 m³, 2.41 times as much. The same candle shares the same release across that much more air. So test across a ladder of rooms, rate the candle for the largest room it fills, and change the vessel or the number of candles for bigger spaces rather than the load.
2.41×
the air in a 5.5 × 4.2 × 3.0 m living room compared with a 3.0 × 3.3 × 2.9 m bedroom · the same candle has to scent all of it
Quick answers — read this first
Why does my candle fill a bedroom but not a living room? Because the living room has far more air. On this page's example rooms, 69.3 m³ against 28.7 m³, 2.41 times the volume. The candle releases the same scent into much more air, so it is more diluted everywhere.

Should I raise the load for large rooms? You cannot load your way there. Matching 2.41× the volume by load alone would mean about 19.3% instead of 8%, above the 13% maximum Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated for, and more oil does not raise release proportionally anyway.

What works for large rooms? More pool surface: a wider, correctly wicked vessel, or two or three candles in the room. And honest labelling: rate each candle for the room size it fills in your tests.

How should I test? Burn the same candle in a ladder of rooms (for example 29, 44, 69 and 105 m³) and score each the same way. The largest room with a pass is the candle's rating. See the room ladder.
The short answer
Short answer: Hot throw is relative to room volume. Measure rooms in m³, test across a ladder of sizes, and rate the candle for the largest room it passes in. For larger rooms add pool surface or candles, not load.
Room maths: Small bedroom 3.0 × 3.3 × 2.9 m = 28.7 m³; Master bedroom 3.6 × 4.2 × 2.9 m = 43.8 m³; Living room 5.5 × 4.2 × 3.0 m = 69.3 m³; Open-plan living–dining 7.0 × 5.0 × 3.0 m = 105.0 m³.
Ceiling: Scaling 8% by 2.41 gives 19.3%, beyond the 13% stated for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and the 10% for CSI 464. The load lever runs out long before the room does.
Same candle, four rooms — floor plans to scale, volume in m³ Small bedroom 3.0 × 3.3 × 2.9 m 28.7 m³ · 1.00× Master bedroom 3.6 × 4.2 × 2.9 m 43.8 m³ · 1.53× Living room 5.5 × 4.2 × 3.0 m 69.3 m³ · 2.41× Open-plan living–dining 7.0 × 5.0 × 3.0 m 105.0 m³ · 3.66× Dot = the candle. × = volume relative to the small bedroom. Same release, more air to share it.
Floor plans drawn to one scale, with ceiling heights and volumes computed from the stated dimensions. The dimensions are illustrative examples of common Indian room sizes, not survey data. The point is proportion: the open-plan space holds several times the air of the small bedroom, and the same candle must share its release across all of it.
Straight answer
My candle fills a small bedroom but disappears in a large living room — how should room size influence how I judge hot throw?
Judge hot throw against a named room size, never in general. A 3.0 × 3.3 m bedroom with a 2.9 m ceiling holds 28.7 m³ of air. A 5.5 × 4.2 m living room with a 3.0 m ceiling holds 69.3 m³, 2.41 times as much. The candle releases the same scent in both, so in the living room it is shared across far more air and is more diluted everywhere. That is not a fault; it is arithmetic. So test across a ladder of rooms, score each the same way, and rate the candle for the largest room in which it passes. Do not try to close the gap with load: matching the living room by load alone would mean about 19.3%, above the 13% maximum Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated for, and release does not rise in step with load anyway. For larger rooms, add pool surface: a wider, correctly wicked vessel, or two or three candles. Then describe the candle honestly by room size.
One line: a candle does not have hot throw. It has hot throw in a room of a certain size.
A room-ladder test needs the same candle several times over, so a value oil keeps it affordable. British Rose at ₹342.20 for 100 g (₹3.42/g) pours four 200 g candles at 8% (64 g) with 36 g to spare, and its 1 kg is 10.3% cheaper per gram if the range goes into production.

Measure the room, not the feeling

"It fills the room" means nothing until someone says which room.

Makers, customers and reviews all describe throw in relative words: fills the room, barely there, overpowering. Each of those is true only for a particular space. The simplest improvement to any hot-throw judgement is to write down the room it was made in, as length × width × ceiling height, and multiply. Volume is the quantity that matters, because scent spreads through the air of the whole room, and a high ceiling adds air just as a longer floor does.

Illustrative room sizes · volume = length × width × ceiling height
Four rooms, their volumes, and how they compare
Room Length × width Ceiling Floor area Volume × the small bedroom
Small bedroom 3.0 × 3.3 m 2.9 m 9.90 m² 28.7 m³ 1.00×
Master bedroom 3.6 × 4.2 m 2.9 m 15.12 m² 43.8 m³ 1.53×
Living room 5.5 × 4.2 m 3.0 m 23.10 m² 69.3 m³ 2.41×
Open-plan living–dining 7.0 × 5.0 m 3.0 m 35.00 m² 105.0 m³ 3.66×

The spread is larger than it feels when you walk between rooms. The open-plan space holds 3.66 times the air of the small bedroom. If your hot-throw testing happens in a small workshop or bedroom and your customer burns the candle in a living room, you have been judging in the easiest room in the house. That alone explains many "customers say it is weak" complaints; an objective hot-throw method deals with the rest.

Two other room features change the result, even at the same volume. Openings: a room with an open doorway into a corridor or a stairwell shares its air with that space, so its effective volume is larger than its own measurements. Air movement: fans and air conditioning spread scent faster but also dilute it and disturb the flame. Testing with ceiling fans covers that separately. For a room-size comparison, keep doors closed and fans off, so volume is the only thing changing.

Write the room on every score sheet
Add three numbers to the top of every hot-throw note: length, width and ceiling height. Six months later, when you compare this candle with a new one, you will know whether the difference is the candle or the room.

Why load cannot scale to the room

A room 2.4 times bigger needs something like 2.4 times the release. Load cannot supply it.

Here is a deliberately simple model, labelled as such. Suppose scent mixes evenly through a closed room, and suppose release were proportional to load. To give the 69.3 m³ living room the same concentration the 28.7 m³ bedroom gets from an 8% candle, you would need 2.41 times the release, which the model says is an 19.3% load. Both assumptions flatter the load lever, and it still fails: 19.3% is above the 13% maximum the wax maker states for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and nearly double the 10% stated for CSI 464.

In practice release does not rise in step with load. More oil can crowd the wick, shrink the pool and raise soot, so the curve flattens or even turns down. Why an 8% candle can smell stronger than a 10% one explains that effect, and why a 12% rating is not a 12% recommendation explains why a wax's ceiling is a limit, not a target. The honest conclusion is that a candle designed for a bedroom cannot be turned into a living-room candle with more oil.

Simplified even-mixing model · 69.3 m³ living room vs 28.7 m³ bedroom · illustrative, not a prediction
What it would take to match the bedroom's result in the living room
Lever What it needs Feasible?
Load alone About 19.3% instead of 8% No: above the 13% and 10% stated maximums, and release does not scale with load
Pool surface: one wider vessel A pool about 10.9 cm across instead of 7 cm (area scales with diameter squared) Possibly, with a correctly wicked vessel; burn test needed
Pool surface: more candles 2.41 candles' worth, i.e. two or three Yes, and each candle keeps its tested formula
More time Longer burn before judging Partly; helps a diffusion-limited room, not an output-limited one
Honest rating Sell it as a bedroom candle Yes, and it avoids complaints
Argued against our own interest, plainly. The profitable answer for a fragrance supplier is "use more oil for big rooms". The arithmetic says it cannot work within the wax's stated ceiling, and pushing towards the ceiling often makes the candle burn worse. Sell the tested candle as what it is, and offer a second candle or a larger vessel for large rooms.

The room ladder

The room ladder turns room size from an excuse into a specification. You burn the same candle, cured to the same age, in rooms of increasing volume, score each in the same way, and record the largest room where it passes your standard. That becomes the candle's room rating.

1
Pick three or four rooms and measure themUse real rooms you can access: a bedroom, a larger bedroom, a living room, perhaps an open-plan space. Measure length, width and ceiling height and compute volume. Close doors and switch off fans and air conditioning.
2
Pour identical candlesPour one candle per room from the same pot: 200 g at 8% is 16 g of oil and 184 g of wax, same wick, same jar. Cure them together to one working checkpoint, for example 7 or 14 days.
3
Burn at the same time of dayLight all candles at once if you have the rooms, or on consecutive days at the same hour. Start timing when each pool reaches the glass.
4
Score on entry at a fixed spotAt 60 minutes, enter each room fresh and score at the room's centre on a 0–5 scale. Leave between rooms for a few minutes. Why fresh entries matter explains the fatigue problem.
5
Set your pass markDecide in advance what counts as a pass, for example a 3 (clearly noticeable) at the room's centre after 60 minutes. Keep it the same for every candle you ever rate.
6
Record the ratingThe largest room that passes becomes the rating: for example, "fills rooms up to about 40 m³ in our tests". Use that honestly in product descriptions.
Example sheet · pass mark 3 at room centre after 60 min · scores are made-up examples
Room-ladder sheet
Room Volume Score at 60 min Pass? Note
Small bedroom 28.7 m³ 4 Yes Clear from the doorway
Master bedroom 43.8 m³ 3 Yes Clear at centre
Living room 69.3 m³ 2 No Noticeable near the candle only
Open-plan living–dining 105.0 m³ 1 No Faint
Rating up to about 44 m³ Largest passing room
The CSI principle
Rate the candle for a room, then sell it for that room.
A bedroom candle that is sold as a bedroom candle earns good reviews. The same candle sold with "fills any room" earns complaints from everyone with a living room. The formula did not change; the promise did.
The candle didn't disappear in the living room. It was shared with two and a half bedrooms' worth of air.

Scenting large rooms

If your customers want to scent living rooms and open-plan spaces, change the product, not the formula. The options below keep a tested formula intact and add release through more pool surface.

British Rose at the 100 g rate · Luxury Soy Wax Chunks · Eco Thin C1 · White Matte Glass Jar · material cost only
Ways to cover the living room, with material cost
Option What changes Material cost Caveat
One 200 g candle (bedroom rating) Nothing ₹241.67 Rated for the bedroom-sized rooms
Two 200 g candles Twice the pool surface, same formula ₹483.34 Place them apart in the room
Three 200 g candles Three times the pool surface ₹725.00 For open-plan spaces
One 400 g candle in a wider vessel (illustrative) 32 g oil + 368 g wax ₹329.94 oil and wax, plus vessel and wick Needs its own wick test; no three-wick jar is listed at CSI

Material cost covers oil (₹54.75 of British Rose per 200 g candle at the 100 g rate), wax (₹110.22), wick (₹5.90) and jar (₹70.80). It excludes labour, packaging, freight and GST. The larger vessel's cost is shown for oil and wax only because a wide single vessel is not a CSI-listed item; the 400 g figure follows this blog's illustrative large-jar convention. CSI does not list three-wick jars, and wick sizing for a wider jar is not published, so a wider vessel means a new burn test. Ask on WhatsApp if you are looking for a wider container.

Pairs and trios are also a product idea in their own right. A "living-room pair" of the same scent, or a trio of complementary scents in one family, gives the customer the release they need without asking one candle to do what it cannot. Keep every candle in the set at its tested formula. If you blend scents across a set, how load applies to a blend sets out the maths.

Testing only in the workshop. A small workshop full of scented wax is the least representative room you can test in. Its volume is small, and its air already carries fragrance. If every candle you make passes in the workshop, that tells you nothing about the living room. Add at least one large room to every test round.

What to buy

A room ladder uses several identical candles, so oil cost adds up faster than in a single test. British Rose is one of the lowest per-gram oils in the catalogue and one of the few with a real 1 kg break. Dark Vanilla Oud is a richer second option for a premium large-room range. Prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026; we publish no throw data for either.

If the candle fails even in the small bedroom, the problem is not room size. Output versus diffusion and the variable checklist are the next reads.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. "Use more oil for big rooms" would sell more oil. On the arithmetic it cannot work within the wax's stated ceiling, so this page recommends more pool surface and honest room ratings instead.

Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled 24 September 2026. Wick and jar prices are Blog 760's, verified 10 September 2026. Room volumes are length × width × height from stated illustrative dimensions. Per-candle costs and the shopping-list total are arithmetic on CSI prices.

The even-mixing model is a deliberate simplification to show proportion, not a prediction of any candle. Example scores are made up to show the method. CSI publishes no throw data for any oil. For advice on large-room products, containers or bulk quotes, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

how does room size affect candle throw
The same release is spread through more air in a larger room, so the scent is more diluted. On this page's examples, a 5.5 × 4.2 × 3.0 m living room has 2.41 times the air of a 3.0 × 3.3 × 2.9 m bedroom. Judge throw against a named room size.
how big a room can one candle fill
There is no general figure; it depends on the candle, the wax, the wick and the room. Test your candle across a ladder of rooms and rate it for the largest room where it passes your standard. That rating is the honest answer for your product.
should I use more fragrance oil for large rooms
Not as the main lever. A simple model says matching 2.41 times the volume would need about 19.3% load, above the 13% maximum stated for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, and real release does not rise in step with load. Add pool surface or candles instead.
how to calculate room volume for candle testing
Multiply length × width × ceiling height in metres. A 3.0 × 3.3 m room with a 2.9 m ceiling is 28.71 m³. Write the volume on every hot-throw note so later comparisons are fair.
is a 3 wick candle better for large rooms
A wider vessel with more pool surface can release more, but it needs its own wick test. CSI does not list three-wick jars, and wick sizes by jar diameter are not published. Two or three single-wick candles of a tested formula are the simpler route.
why does my candle smell strong in the shop but weak at home
A small, closed, already-scented space makes most candles seem strong. Homes have larger rooms, open doorways and moving air. Customers Say My Candle Is Weak but I Can Smell It Clearly in My Workshop — How Do I Create a More Objective Hot-Throw Testing Method? sets out how to test in conditions closer to the customer's.
