Packaging · fragrance absorption
Open the carton and the box smells strongly of your candle — but the candle itself seems weaker. The packaging may be borrowing your scent, or lending its own.

two 100 g Woody Oud packs for a 10-candle packaging test
Quick answers — read this first
Can packaging absorb candle fragrance? It can. Porous board, paper inserts, tissue and some foams can pick up fragrance from an open or loosely lidded candle over time. Test it in your own packaging.

How do I know if it is happening? Remove the candle, close the empty carton, and smell it a day later beside a new, unused carton. A strong scent in the used one shows migration.

Can packaging make a candle smell different? Yes. Board, inks, glue and damp paper can add their own odour, which you notice first when the box is opened.

Does a lid stop it? A well-fitting lid usually reduces it a lot. A lidless jar in a paper sleeve is the most exposed arrangement.
The short answer
Short answer: Yes, packaging can absorb fragrance and add its own odour. Test bare, lidded, carton and bag-in-carton candles from one batch, and smell empty cartons.
Key check: Score at the moment of opening and again after the candle has been out for a while; packaging effects fade faster than fragrance.
CSI note: CSI does not sell boxes or labels; test the packaging you actually use.

Straight answer
My Candle Packaging Absorbs Fragrance During Storage — Could Packaging Materials Be Affecting How Strong the Candle Smells When Opened?
Yes, it can — in two directions. Porous packaging such as uncoated board, paper inserts, tissue and some foams can take up fragrance from a candle over weeks, so the box smells strongly and the candle seems weaker when it comes out. Packaging can also add its own smell — board, glue, ink or damp paper — that masks the fragrance at the moment of opening. Run a packaging test from one batch: bare lidded jar, lidded jar in your carton, lidded jar in a sealed bag inside the carton, and an unscented control in the carton. Then smell the empty cartons. If the box has the scent and the bagged candle does not lose it, the packaging is the leak.
One line: if the empty box smells of your candle, your packaging is taking fragrance — test it before blaming the oil.
Woody Oud, with woods, amber and musk in its base, is a good test oil for packaging: a rich base that board and paper inserts readily pick up.

Packaging works in two directions

The box can be a sponge for your fragrance and a source of its own smell at the same time.

Makers usually notice this by accident. A retailer says the boxes smell wonderful but the candles inside are a bit weak. Or you open a carton after a few months and the scent hits you before the lid is off, then fades once the candle is out. Both are signs the packaging is part of what the customer smells.

Absorption is the first direction. Fragrance materials released from the candle surface into the air inside a box do not just sit there. Porous materials — uncoated board, kraft paper, paper or card inserts, tissue, shredded fill, some foams — can take them up over time. The more open the candle, the more fragrance is available to be taken. A lidless jar in a paper sleeve gives the most away; a well-lidded jar in a carton much less.

Addition is the second direction. Board, glue, printing ink, wood-pulp fillers and damp paper all have smells of their own. When you lift a lid inside a closed box, the first breath is a mix of candle and box. If the box smell is strong, the candle can seem weaker or different, even if nothing in the wax has changed.

Common mistake. Assuming the candle lost its fragrance because the box smells of it. A box that has absorbed some scent does not mean the candle is empty — score the candle after it has been out of the box for a while, not only at the moment of opening.

Which materials to suspect first

Start with whatever touches the candle or sits closest to it. Paper or card inserts that hug the jar, shredded paper or wood-wool fill, tissue wraps and uncoated inner cartons are the usual first suspects because they are porous and close to the source. Outer shipping cartons matter less if the inner packaging is good. Printed sleeves with strong ink or glue smells are suspects for the second direction — adding odour rather than taking it.

Note the closure too. A jar with a loose or no lid releases fragrance into the box all the time; a firmly closed jar releases far less. If you sell lidless jars, the packaging matters more, because there is nothing between the wax surface and the board.

A four-arrangement packaging test

You want to isolate the packaging. So keep everything else identical: one oil lot, one wax lot, one pour, the same jar and lid, and candles stored side by side in the same place for the same time.

1
Pour ten scented candles and two unscented. Use one batch. The counts are suggested starting points; more candles give more confidence.
2
Arrangement 1 — bare, lid on. Two scented candles stored without any packaging. This is the reference.
3
Arrangement 2 — in your carton, lid on. Three scented candles in your usual carton with your usual insert.
4
Arrangement 3 — sealed bag inside the carton. Three scented candles each in a sealed food-safe bag before going into the same carton. This shows whether a barrier stops the transfer.
5
Arrangement 4 — controls. One unscented candle in your carton and one unscented bare, to see what the carton adds on its own.
6
Keep two spare scented candles. Use them as fresh references at the final check or to repeat a doubtful score.

Store everything together for the period your stock really sits in packaging — a month, three months, a festive season. Check at one or two points you choose.

Score at opening and after the candle has breathed

Packaging effects and fragrance effects behave differently over a few minutes, and that is your best clue. Score each candle twice: in the first breath as the box and lid open, and again after it has been out of the packaging and lid-off for fifteen minutes — a suggested interval — in a neutral room.

Packaging test record
How to read the scores (example pattern)
Arrangement At opening After 15 minutes out What it suggests
1 Bare, lid on Clean, true to formula Same Reference
2 Carton, lid on Strong, mixed with box Weaker than reference Carton is taking fragrance and adding its own
3 Bag in carton Clean Close to reference A barrier stops the transfer
4a Unscented in carton Faint cardboard or glue Fades Box odour, not fragrance
4b Unscented bare Neutral Neutral Wax is clean
Empty carton from 2, closed overnight Smells of the candle — Fragrance has migrated into the board

The empty-carton check is the clearest single sign. Take the candle out of an arrangement-2 carton, close the empty carton, leave it overnight, and smell it beside a new, never-used carton. If the used one smells clearly of your fragrance, the board and insert have taken it up.

Burn-test before you conclude
Cold throw at opening is not the whole story. Burn the arrangement-2 and arrangement-1 candles side by side, supervised and never left unattended. If hot throw is the same, the packaging affected the first impression, not the candle's performance.

What the test costs, and what to buy for it

Ten scented 200 g candles at 8% need 10 × 16 = 160 g of oil. With Woody Oud, two 100 g packs cover it: 2 × ₹453.12 = ₹906.24. The 500 g pack is ₹2,265.60 and works out cheaper per gram — 160 × ₹4.5312 = ₹724.99 of oil used — but it leaves 340 g open before you know whether your packaging works. Buy the two small packs for the test.

Wax for twelve candles is about 2.4 kg of CSI 464: 3 × ₹507.40 = ₹1,522.20 for 3 kg. Jars depend on what you sell in. CSI does not sell cartons, inserts, sleeves or bags, so test the exact packaging you buy elsewhere and add its cost yourself.

Testers and gift boxes

Gift boxes and display boxes are often the most porous packaging a maker uses, and they sit on shelves the longest. If a retailer keeps your boxed candles for a season, the box has a long time to take up fragrance. Run the test with your gift box as well as your shipping carton; they may behave quite differently.

Fixes, from cheapest to most involved

Keep lids on firmly in storage. Use a lidded jar if your current one has no lid. Put the candle in a sealed bag before it goes into the carton, if your results show the bag helps. Replace porous inserts and fillers with ones that take up less fragrance — and test them the same way. Ask your packaging supplier about coated or lined board if the carton is the main absorber.

Write the result into your packaging specification: which insert, which board, bag or no bag, lid tightness checked at packing. When a new packer joins or a supplier changes a material, the specification tells everyone what was tested and approved.

Re-run the test whenever you change a packaging supplier, board grade, insert or print finish. Packaging that looks identical can behave differently, and it is far cheaper to find out with ten test candles than with a season's stock.

Only if the bagged candle also drifts away from the bare reference over time is the change in the candle itself — and that is a fragrance-ageing question. Our oil pages give no shelf life or storage temperature. Ask us on WhatsApp (+91 7397976926) for the IFRA certificate, MSDS and any storage guidance for your oil and lot, in writing. The 60-month shelf life on CSI 464 is a wax statement, not a packaging or fragrance one.

Payal Patel said of Woody Oud: "Good quality wood fragrance oil with a warm, long-lasting scent and strong performance in candles." That is one customer's experience, in one setup. Your packaging can still take some of that scent away before your customer ever lights the candle, which is exactly why the test is worth running.

Argue against interest
Test your box before you blame your oil.
Packaging can both take fragrance and add its own smell. A cheap barrier or a better insert can recover what a more expensive oil never would.
If the empty box smells better than the candle, the box is wearing your fragrance.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general fragrance-ageing practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly that CSI's oil pages publish no shelf life, storage temperature or ageing data, treats the 60-month shelf life on the CSI 464 and 468 pages as a wax statement only, and labels every test day, cabinet temperature, candle count, reject rate or lead time as a starting point or the reader's own figure.

Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. No fragrance-oil pack above 1 kg is listed, so larger quantities are shown as multiples of the 1 kg price; ask for a quote rather than assuming a discount.

Frequently asked questions

Can cardboard boxes absorb candle fragrance?
They can. Porous board, paper inserts, tissue and some fillers pick up fragrance released from the candle over time, especially if the jar is unlidded. Test your actual packaging against a bare, lidded reference.
Why does my candle box smell stronger than the candle?
The box may have absorbed fragrance during storage, and the first breath on opening mixes box and candle. Score the candle again after fifteen minutes out of the box to separate the two.
How do I test whether packaging affects candle scent?
Store candles from one batch bare, in your carton, and in a sealed bag inside the carton, plus an unscented control in the carton. Compare blind and smell the empty cartons.
Does packaging affect hot throw?
Usually less than cold throw at opening. Burn a packaged and a bare candle side by side, supervised, to check. If hot throw matches, the packaging mainly affected the first impression.
Will a plastic bag inside the carton help?
Often, in testing. A sealed bag can stop board and inserts taking up fragrance. Check that the bag material itself adds no odour and suits contact with your candle. Your packaging test shows whether it does.
Does CSI sell candle boxes or inserts?
No. CSI does not sell packaging boxes or labels. Test the packaging you buy elsewhere, and add its cost to your own candle costing. Run a carton and insert test with the packaging you choose.

Assumptions: Fragrance load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g = 184 g wax + 16 g oil at 8%).
