My Candle Sells for ₹799 — How Much of the Selling Price Should Realistically Be Consumed by Wax Before Fragrance, Jar and Packaging Are Added?
Aktie
Is wax the biggest cost? No. Fragrance (₹91.06) and the jar (₹70.80) are each about as large; together one and a half to two times the wax.
When does the wax share become a problem? When the candle is large for its price. At 400 g the wax share reaches 29.3% in CSI 468.
Is a dearer wax worth it at ₹799? Only if a blind panel notices. Chunks vs Soy Pearl is ₹32.05 a candle. See the perception test.
About 10–15% for a 200 g candle — and it is rarely the line to worry about
Here is the direct answer, worked with CSI's real prices. A 200 g candle at 8% fragrance load holds 184 g of wax. At the 5 kg rate that costs ₹78.16 in Natural Soy Pearl, ₹93.36 in CSI 464, ₹110.22 in Chunks and ₹117.21 in CSI 468. Against ₹799, that is 9.8%, 11.7%, 13.8% and 14.7%. So for a 200 g candle, the wax realistically takes about a tenth to a seventh of the price — whichever CSI soy wax you choose.
That is smaller than most makers expect, and it puts the wax in context. The fragrance in the same candle — 16 g of Dark Vanilla Oud Fragrance Oil at the 1 kg rate — costs ₹91.06. The White Matte jar costs ₹70.80. Each is about as large as the wax line, and together they are one and a half to two times it. If a ₹799 candle is struggling to make money, the wax is unlikely to be the main reason. The size of the candle, the jar, the packaging and the channel's cut usually matter more.
A useful working check (a rule of thumb, not a standard): if wax alone is taking much more than about 15% of your selling price, either the candle is large for its price or the price is low for the candle. At 15% of ₹799 — ₹119.85 — you could put about 217 g of finished candle in Chunks or 307 g in Natural Soy Pearl before the wax alone crossed that line.
The wax share, wax by wax and size by size
| Wax | Per kg | Wax per candle | Share of ₹799 | Share of ₹719.10 net |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Natural Soy Pearl (5 kg) | ₹424.80 | ₹78.16 | 9.8% | 10.9% |
| CSI 464 (5 kg) | ₹507.40 | ₹93.36 | 11.7% | 13.0% |
| Chunks (5 kg) | ₹599.00 | ₹110.22 | 13.8% | 15.3% |
| CSI 468 (5 kg) | ₹637.00 | ₹117.21 | 14.7% | 16.3% |
The last column matters if you sell through a marketplace, a payment gateway or a stockist: the price the customer pays is not the price you receive. With an example 10% fee (replace with your channel's real terms), you receive ₹719.10 and the wax share rises slightly. If your ₹799 includes GST, divide it by one plus your GST rate first — use your accountant's figure; this page states no GST rates.
| Candle | Wax | Natural Soy Pearl | CSI 464 | Chunks | CSI 468 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 150 g | 138 g | ₹58.62 · 7.3% | ₹70.02 · 8.8% | ₹82.66 · 10.3% | ₹87.91 · 11.0% |

| 300 g | 276 g | ₹117.24 · 14.7% | ₹140.04 · 17.5% | ₹165.32 · 20.7% | ₹175.81 · 22.0% |
| 400 g | 368 g | ₹156.33 · 19.6% | ₹186.72 · 23.4% | ₹220.43 · 27.6% | ₹234.42 · 29.3% |
At 400 g the wax share roughly doubles — up to 29.3% in CSI 468. That is the real driver of the wax line: how much candle you sell for the price, more than which wax you pick. If you are pricing a large jar at ₹799, the wax choice starts to matter; at 150 g, it barely registers. What ₹20, ₹50 or ₹100 a kilo means per candle gives the same picture from the per-kilo side.
The whole ₹799, line by line
Here is the full ₹799 for two versions of the same 200 g candle: one in the lowest-priced CSI soy wax, one in Chunks. Wax, fragrance, wick, jar and tissue are CSI prices (Premium Packing Tissue Paper is ₹650.00 for 100 sheets, ₹6.50 a sheet). The box, label, labour and the 10% channel or payment fee are labelled examples you must replace with your own quotes.

| Left from ₹799 | ₹405.68 | 50.8% | ₹373.63 | 46.8% |
Switching the wax from Chunks to Soy Pearl moves ₹32.05 per candle — 4.0% of the price — from cost to margin. At 300 candles a month that is ₹9,615.84. It is worth having, but notice what is bigger: the example channel fee (₹79.90), the jar (₹70.80) and the fragrance (₹91.06). Within materials alone, wax is 27.6% of the cost of goods in the Soy Pearl version and 34.9% in the Chunks version (materials plus tissue, box and label).
Would a ₹799 customer notice the wax? A side-by-side
At ₹799 the customer is paying for an experience: how the candle looks, how it throws, how it burns. The ₹32.05 gap between Chunks and Natural Soy Pearl is only worth paying if it shows up in something a customer can perceive. CSI publishes no data claiming either is better, and the product pages do not compare them — so test it. Pour 4 candles of each with Dark Vanilla Oud Fragrance Oil at 8% (16 g oil + 184 g wax), Eco Thin C1 wicks and White Matte jars. CSI's product page for Chunks states a 13% maximum load; Natural Soy Pearl has no ceiling published, so 8% is a labelled test load.

The decision rule
| What you find | What it means | What you buy |
|---|---|---|
| Wax ≤ about 15% of price (200 g: 9.8%–14.7%) | Wax is not your margin problem | Keep the wax your test prefers; work on jar, load, fees |
| Panel cannot tell the two waxes apart | The ₹32.05 gap buys nothing a customer sees | Natural Soy Pearl, 10 kg (₹4,248.00) |
| Panel clearly prefers Chunks, safety equal | 4.0% of price for a perceived difference | Chunks, 5 kg (₹2,995.00) |
| Wax well above 15% (large candle at ₹799) | Size or price is the issue | Re-price, or reduce the candle size, before changing wax |
For the reader's ₹799, 200 g candle, the concrete purchase is: run the ₹2,720.06 perception kit, then buy Natural Soy Pearl in a 10 kg bag (₹4,248.00) if the panel cannot tell it from Chunks — or stay on Chunks in 5 kg bags (₹2,995.00) if it reliably can. Either way the wax will be about a tenth to a seventh of your price, and lowest cost per saleable candle is the next check, because rejects can move the real figure more than the per-kilo price.
From price share to true cost
This page works down from the selling price. The siblings work up from the wax: per-kilo gaps as rupees per candle, cost per saleable candle after rejects and labour, landed cost after shipping and cure time as working capital. In the first half of the cluster, ₹450 a kilo at 8% vs a cheaper wax at 10% and different fragrance capacities show how the oil line interacts with the wax. The true commercial cost formula brings it all together.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. We sell every wax on this page, and the dearer ones earn us more. At ₹799 the gap is a few percent of the price, so we tell you to keep the cheaper wax unless a blind panel can tell the difference.
Wax and oil prices are CSI live pricing pulled on 24 September 2026 and re-checked on 1 October 2026 (unchanged). Wick and jar prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026; tissue paper is ₹650.00 for 100 sheets on the store. Every share and per-candle figure is plain arithmetic shown to two decimals.
The box (₹25.00), label (₹6.00), labour (₹30.00), the 10% channel or payment fee, 300 candles a month, the candle sizes, the 15% working check and the panel test are labelled examples and working practices; ₹799 is the reader's figure.
