CSI Wick Buying · Smoke When Long
Every wick smokes if it is left long enough. If yours smokes at the length one normal burn leaves, change the wick, and save money doing it; if only neglect makes it smoke, label every candle. A trimmer is a feature with a price, not a fix.
₹3.54
saved per candle by Eco C2 → Eco C1, against a care sticker at ₹0.83 · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
My candle smokes when the wick gets long but is fine after trimming. Is it over-wicked? It depends on how long is "long". If it smokes at the wick length one normal session leaves behind, the wick is too big for real use and a smaller wick is the honest fix. If it smokes only after several untrimmed sessions, it is a maintenance problem, and a care label is the honest fix.

Which fix is cheaper? The smaller wick, if it passes. Eco C2 to Eco C1 saves ₹3.54 a candle; a care sticker adds ₹0.83; a ₹177.00 trimmer in a three-candle gift set adds ₹59.00 a candle. At 200 candles a month, the wick change saves ₹708.00 while stickers cost ₹165.20.

What do I buy to find out? One Eco C1 20-pack (₹118.00; the 10-pack is out of stock) for three test candles beside three of your current C2 build. The six candles cost ₹922.88 in materials, excluding your jars, and the saving repays that in about 1.3 months.

Should I put a trimmer in every gift set? Only as a priced feature, never as a fix. A trimmer helps customers who already trim; it does nothing for a wick that smokes after one normal burn.
The short answer
Branch: find the exposed length at which smoke starts and compare it with the length one untrimmed session leaves. Inside that length = wick. Beyond it = maintenance.
Wick branch: buy Eco C1 20-pack (₹118.00), pour 3 on C1 beside 3 on C2, approve on full life; saves ₹3.54 a candle.
Maintenance branch: a care sticker on every candle (₹0.83 from the 500 roll, ₹0.70 from the 1,000); a trimmer only where you price it into the set (₹59.00 a candle in a three-set).
Neither: if it smokes even when trimmed to 5–6 mm, this is a soot attribution problem, not a trimming one.
Smoky only when long: what each fix costs, or saves, per candle CSI live prices, 1 October 2026. Wicks flat per wick (C1 ₹5.90, C2 ₹9.44). Two panels, two scales: each drawn to its own scale. Excludes labour, freight, packaging and GST. Worked example; your set sizes replace ours. A · wick and label, rupees per candle (axis 0 to 4) C2 → C1 (saving) ₹3.54 saved Care sticker, roll of 500 ₹0.83 added Care sticker, roll of 1,000 ₹0.70 added 0 1 2 3 4 B · a ₹177.00 trimmer in the set, rupees per candle (axis 0 to 200) C2 → C1 saving, same scale ₹3.54 saved Trimmer, 6-candle set ₹29.50 Trimmer, 3-candle set ₹59.00 Trimmer, 2-candle set ₹88.50 Trimmer, single candle ₹177.00 0 50 100 150 200 Smoke at the length one normal session leaves → the wick is too big for real use: test C1 (saves money too). Smoke only after several untrimmed sessions → maintenance: a sticker on every candle; a trimmer only if priced in.
Two panels because the numbers live on different scales. Panel A: the wick change saves more per candle (₹3.54) than either sticker costs (₹0.83 or ₹0.70). Panel B: a ₹177.00 trimmer in a gift set costs ₹59.00 a candle in a three-set; on the same scale the wick saving is a sliver. The strip underneath is the only question that decides which fix is honest: at what wick length does the smoke start?
Straight answer
My candle smokes when the wick gets long but burns normally after trimming. Does that indicate over-wicking or customer maintenance?
Both are possible, and the deciding number is a length, not a feeling. Every wick smokes if it is left long enough; the question is whether yours smokes at the length a customer realistically leaves. Burn the candle the way people do (one normal session, no trim before the next light) and note the exposed length and whether it smokes. If it smokes at that length, the wick is too big for real use: test one rung down (on CSI's tabbed range, C2 → C1 or Cotton Braided → C2) with three candles through the full life. If the smaller wick passes, it is both the honest fix and the cheaper one: C2 → C1 saves ₹3.54 a candle, ₹708.00 a month at 200 candles. If it smokes only after several untrimmed sessions, the wick is right and the customer needs a reminder: a care sticker on every candle (₹0.83 each from a 500 roll) is the honest fix. A trimmer in a gift set (₹177.00, so ₹59.00 a candle in a three-set) is a feature you can sell, not a substitute for either. And if it smokes when trimmed, it is not this problem at all.
One line: if one normal burn makes it smoke, change the wick; if neglect makes it smoke, label it.
The test order: Eco C1 20-pack (₹118.00; the 10-pack is out of stock on 1 October 2026). Your three C2 controls, oil and wax come from production stock. Buy the care sticker roll (₹413.00) only once the test puts you in the maintenance branch.

Two fixes, two different promises

A smaller wick changes the candle. A sticker changes what you ask of the customer. Only one of them is a design decision.

The symptom is familiar: trimmed to 5–6 mm, the flame is calm and the jar stays clean; left long, the wick grows a carbon cap, the flame lengthens and it throws dark wisps onto the glass. In testing you trim before every burn, so you see the calm candle. Your customers often do not, so they see the smoky one. Two fixes are on the table and they promise different things.

What each fix promises · and what it does not
Per-candle money from CSI live pricing, 1 October 2026 · all figures declared
Fix What changes What it promises Per candle What it cannot do
Smaller wick (C2 → C1) The candle Burns acceptably at the length people really leave ₹3.54 saved Help if the smaller wick cannot reach the glass
Care sticker The instructions The customer knows to trim and how long to burn ₹0.83 or ₹0.70 added Make anyone follow it
Trimmer in the set The customer's tools Trimming is easy for those who will do it ₹59.00 added in a three-set Fix a wick that smokes after one session

A candle designed to be safe only if every customer trims every time is designed for a customer who mostly does not exist. That is the robustness argument behind the real-world wick trimming post: choose the wick that stays acceptable at the length customers really leave, not only at 5–6 mm. This page does not repeat that test; it prices the two decisions it can lead to, so the cheaper-looking fix does not quietly win. (Where labels sit among the other ways to tame a candle that throws well but burns hard is ranked in the keep-throw, cut-power buy list; care-label stock for a first-burn tunnel that catches up is the first-burn catch-up post.)

The worked example

Your own jar, 7.5 cm across the inside (a pool of 44.18 cm²; CSI lists no jar at 7.5 cm in stock), a 175 g fill at 8% of total weight (14 g of Fresh Strawberries + 161 g of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks; 8% of total is 8.70% of wax weight, inside both the oil page's "6-9% for candles" and the Chunks page's "up to 13%"). Today's wick is Eco C2. You sell 200 candles a month: 80 singles and 40 three-candle gift sets. The fill and volumes are worked examples; weigh your own fill line.

Mistake: "The wax page says clean burning, so the smoke must be the customer." Why it fails: the Chunks page does claim "Clean burning with minimal soot", but that describes the wax burning on a wick of sensible length. A carbon-capped 15 mm wick smokes in any wax. Fix: measure where your candle starts to smoke, then decide. Page claims describe products, not your candle.

Which branch you are in

One number decides it: the exposed wick length at which the smoke starts, set against the length one normal session leaves.

Two lengths matter. The realistic length is what the wick grows to after one normal session if nobody trims before relighting; measure it on your own candles after a 3-hour burn and a full cool-down. The smoke length is the shortest exposed length at which a lit candle visibly smokes or marks a white card held above the flame. How to run twins at fixed exposed lengths (5, 10 and 15 mm) is the untrimmed-tolerance test; take its result and read it here.

Smoke length vs realistic length · what it decides and what to buy
Your measurements from the untrimmed-tolerance test · thresholds are our judgement, labelled
What you measured Branch Buy Don't buy
Smokes at or below the realistic length (after one normal session) Wick Eco C1 20-pack (₹118.00) for the C1 arm Trimmers or stickers as the fix
Calm at the realistic length; smokes only after two or more untrimmed sessions Maintenance Care sticker roll (₹413.00 for 500) A smaller wick (it may tunnel and fix nothing)
Borderline: smoke starts just above the realistic length Both Test C1 and label every candle Trimmers in every set
Smokes even when trimmed to 5–6 mm Neither Nothing yet: a three-arm attribution, the soot-on-the-rim post Anything on this page
Smoke only with a fan or AC on Airflow Nothing: move the test, the flicker-or-airflow post A smaller wick

The commonly cited practical flame range is about 2.5–5 cm with a trimmed wick; one CSI trimmer page puts the trim at "1/4 inch before every burn". If your candle needs that trim to stay inside the range, it has no margin for a customer who forgets once. What label wording and session length to print, once you are in the maintenance branch, is the label-policy post.

Don't buy yet: not the sticker roll, not the trimmers, not a 100-pack of C1. Until you know the smoke length, every purchase is a guess about which branch you are in, and the wrong one costs twice: stickers on a candle that needed a wick change, or a wick change on a candle that needed a sticker. Argued against our own interest: the first step costs one C1 20-pack at most, and nothing at all if you already stock C1 for another product.

The wick fix: what it costs to prove and what it saves

The smaller wick is the only fix on this page that pays you back. It still has to earn its place through the full life.

Three candles on C1 beside three on C2, poured from one pot, cured together and burned the way your customers burn: a normal session, no trim before the next light, logged each time. The C2 candles are not wasted; they are the reference that shows the C1 difference is the wick and not the week.

Per candle, excluding your jar: ₹155.58 on C2 and ₹152.04 on C1 (₹49.56 of oil and ₹96.58 of wax at production prices, plus the wick). These exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST. A very rough rule of thumb puts a full pool in a 7.5 cm jar at about 3.0 hours, so a 3-hour session is a fair "normal" burn for the realistic-length step.

The approval rule for the smaller wick

1
Burn 1 trimmed, burns 2 onward as customers doTrim to about 5–6 mm for the first light only. From burn 2, relight without trimming after each full cool-down, and note the exposed length at every relight.
2
Smoke card at 1 hourHold a white card about 15 cm above the flame for a few seconds at 1 hour into each session, or wipe a strip of the glass after each burn with isopropyl alcohol on a cloth. Record clean, faint or marked.
3
Gate 1 at burn 3: is C1 big enough? All three C1 candles must reach the glass all round by burn 3 in still air. If they leave a ring, C1 is too small for this jar and oil: the wick branch is closed, and the honest fix is the label.
4
Gate 2 at the end: does it stay clean? All three C1 candles finish the full life (to about 1 cm left) calm at the realistic length, with no drowning low down and no flame close to the glass, judged by eye, never by touch. Then switch.
5
Check the throw did not go with the smokeA blind comparison of one C1 and one C2 candle at 1 and 2 hours, coded by someone else. A smaller flame sometimes throws a little less; whether you notice it in a room is what matters.

If C1 passes, the arithmetic is simple. The six test candles cost ₹922.88 in materials; at 200 candles a month the switch saves ₹708.00, so the test pays for itself in about 1.3 months, and every month after that is saving. Few fixes in candle making pay you to make the candle safer. If you are already on C1 and it still smokes at realistic lengths, there is no smaller sized, tabbed wick at CSI; what lies below C1 is in the smaller-wick post.

When the wick fix is not available: if C1 leaves a ring at burn 3, the answer sits between C1 and C2, and CSI lists no sized, tabbed wick between them. Do not keep the C1 and hope; do not reach for Cotton Braided (that is a step up). Keep C2, put a care sticker on every candle and print a session length the candle passes. If you want a finer step, ask us on WhatsApp; we will say plainly if we have nothing in between, and another supplier may.

The maintenance fix: stickers and trimmers per candle

A sticker costs less than a rupee. A trimmer costs as much as the candle's wax. Price them like what they are.

If the wick is right and the smoke comes only from neglect, the honest fix is to tell the customer, clearly, on the candle. CSI's Candle Care Stickers Roll comes in two sizes; the per-sticker figure below is price ÷ stickers.

Maintenance options per candle · CSI live pricing, 1 October 2026
Sticker = roll price ÷ stickers · trimmer = price ÷ candles in the set · all figures declared
Option Price Single candle Two-candle set Three-candle set Six-candle set
Care sticker, roll of 500 (1 inch) ₹413.00 ₹0.83 ₹0.83 ₹0.83 ₹0.83
Care sticker, roll of 1,000 (1.5 inch) ₹699.00 ₹0.70 ₹0.70 ₹0.70 ₹0.70
Trimmer, 3 cm blade ₹177.00 ₹177.00 ₹88.50 ₹59.00 ₹29.50
Trimmer, 5.5 cm blade ₹295.00 ₹295.00 ₹147.50 ₹98.33 ₹49.17
Trimmer with debris catcher ₹588.82 ₹588.82 ₹294.41 ₹196.27 ₹98.14
For comparison: C2 → C1 — ₹3.54 saved ₹3.54 saved ₹3.54 saved ₹3.54 saved

Two things stand out. The smaller wick saves about 4.3 times what a sticker costs, so where the wick fix is available, a sticker is an addition, not an alternative. And a trimmer is in a different league: in a three-candle set it adds ₹59.00 a candle, about 17 times the wick saving. That does not make trimmers bad. It makes them a product, with a price.

When a trimmer in the set is honest

A trimmer is honest when the candle already burns acceptably at the realistic length, the set is sold as a gift where a tool adds value, and the set price carries it: at least ₹177.00 more per set just to stand still on margin. It is not honest as a quiet fix for a wick that smokes after one session; most people who receive a trimmer still forget to use it some of the time. For single candles, a sticker is the proportionate tool. If you want to offer a trimmer to single-candle buyers, sell it as a separate line rather than bundling it.

Check the sticker wording first
The text we captured for the sticker listing does not say what is printed on it. Before you buy 500, ask us for the wording and make sure it covers trimming and a session length your candle passed. A sticker that says nothing about trimming does not fix this problem.
Don't buy the 1,000 roll by reflex, and don't refuse it by reflex either: unlike CSI's tabbed wicks, the sticker roll is genuinely cheaper per piece in the bigger size (₹0.70 against ₹0.83). It is also a 1.5 inch sticker rather than 1 inch and lasts 4.8 months at 200 candles; the 500 roll lasts 2.4. Choose on whether the larger sticker fits your jar or lid, not on the saving alone.

A month of production, side by side

Per candle, the differences look like small change. Per month, they decide what you can afford to do properly.

The worked example: 200 candles a month, 80 singles and 40 three-candle gift sets (120 candles). Wick figures exclude the allowance so they compare like with like.

One month, four ways · worked example, 200 candles
Change against today's C2 build with no sticker or trimmer · CSI live pricing, 1 October 2026 · all figures declared
Option Branch it suits Change a month Per candle
C1 instead of C2 Wick ₹708.00 saved ₹3.54 saved

Sticker on every candle, keep C2 (500 roll) Maintenance ₹165.20 added ₹0.83 added
Sticker on every candle, keep C2 (1,000 roll) Maintenance ₹139.80 added ₹0.70 added
₹177.00 trimmer in each of 40 gift sets Maintenance, as a priced feature ₹7,080.00 added ₹35.40 across all 200
Trimmer in every set + sticker on every candle Maintenance, premium sets ₹7,245.20 added —

C1 plus a sticker on every candle still saves ₹542.80 a month against today: if the wick fix passes, there is no money reason not to label as well. Trimmers in every set cost ₹7,080.00 a month, ₹84,960.00 a year, which is real money for a small business and a real benefit only if the set price carries it.

Mistake: choosing stickers because they are "only ₹0.83" when the candle smokes after one normal session. Why it fails: it moves a design problem onto the customer for less than a rupee, and the wick fix you skipped would have saved ₹3.54 a candle. Fix: let the smoke length choose the branch; let the money choose only between options inside that branch.

From the decision to the standing order

Whichever branch wins, the purchase becomes routine: a formula, a reorder point, and no big packs for their own sake.

For anything you buy per candle: units to buy = candles × units per candle × (1 + allowance), reorder at daily use × lead time + safety stock. The 5% allowance and the 10-day lead time with 7 days of safety stock are worked-example figures: CSI dispatches from Pune and does not publish lead times or stock depth, so confirm on WhatsApp.

Standing orders by branch · worked example: 200 candles a month
Flat per wick: packs only need to add up to the need · stickers are cheaper per piece in the 1,000 roll · all figures declared
Branch Item A month Packs Reorder point
Wick Eco C1 210 = ₹1,239.00 two 100-packs + one 20-pack = ₹1,298.00 120 wicks
Wick (today, for comparison) Eco C2 210 = ₹1,982.40 stop reordering once C1 is approved —
Maintenance Care stickers 210 a 500 roll every 2.4 months, or a 1,000 roll every 4.8 120 stickers
Maintenance, gift sets Trimmers (₹177.00) 40, one per set order to your set forecast your set forecast × lead time

Two cautions. First, do not jump to the C1 1,000-pack once C1 is approved: it is ₹5.90 a wick, the same as the 20-pack, so it only moves cash onto the shelf. Second, if the wick branch wins, any C2 left on your shelf goes to products where C2 is approved, never back into this candle; how to run that transition against stock and lead time is the wicking-down transition post.

Diwali gift sets: 8 November 2026 is 38 days from 1 October 2026. If your sets include trimmers or stickers, decide the branch now: a C1 test poured this week can pass Gate 1 within days of curing, and the trimmers and stickers then become a simple count. Send us the set count and we will quote with a GST invoice and a dispatch date.

Candle Wick Cutter (Candle Wick Trimmer), 3 cm blade
The ₹177.00 trimmer the brief names, and the cheapest of the three CSI lists. The page describes a "Sharp, stainless steel blade" and gives "Total Size : 10.5cm Blade Size : 3 cm Width : 2 cm". It is the right add-on when your candle passes at the length customers actually leave and you want to make trimming easy for the ones who do trim. Limitation: a trimmer in the box does not make anyone use it; it is not a fix for a wick that smokes after one normal session. Argued against our own interest: don't put a trimmer in every set to cover a wick problem; at ₹59.00 a candle in a three-candle set it costs about 17 times what the smaller wick would save.

Candle Care Stickers Roll
Printed care instructions on every candle. The listing sells a roll of 500 at 1 inch or 1,000 at 1.5 inch. The text we captured does not describe what is printed on the sticker, so ask us on WhatsApp for the wording before you rely on it for trimming and session length. Unlike wicks, the bigger roll is cheaper per sticker (₹0.70 against ₹0.83), but it is also a larger sticker, so check it fits your jar or lid. Limitation: a label shares responsibility with the customer; it does not change how the candle burns.

Luxury Soy Wax Chunks for Jar / Container Candles
The worked example's wax. The page states "up to 13% fragrance load capacity" and claims "Clean burning with minimal soot"; that claim describes the wax, not an untrimmed 15 mm wick, and no wax prevents soot from an over-length wick. No pour temperature is stated in the text we captured: follow your usual practice and keep it the same for every test candle. Per gram it is ₹0.60 at every size from 500 g to 10 kg, so there is no bulk saving to chase before the test.
Pack Price Per unit What it covers here
500 g ₹299.00 ₹0.60 per g 3 candles
1 kg ₹599.00 ₹0.60 per g the six test candles (966 g) with room to spare
5 kg ₹2,995.00 ₹0.60 per g the same per gram as the 1 kg
10 kg ₹5,999.00 ₹0.60 per g production; costed here

Skip for this problem: Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made: a step up, the wrong direction for a smoking wick. Performance Wooden Wicks: a different system with its own trimming behaviour; not a fix for a cotton wick left long. Wick stickers and centring tools: useful in production, irrelevant to trimming. The ₹588.82 trimmer with a debris catcher is a nicer tool for your own bench, but in a gift set it adds ₹196.27 a candle.

The CSI principle
Design for the wick length people really leave.
If one normal burn makes it smoke, the wick is the fix, and it saves money. If only neglect makes it smoke, a label is the fix. A trimmer is a feature with a price, never a substitute for either.
"Every wick smokes if you leave it long enough. The test is whether yours smokes at the length your customer leaves it."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the wicks, trimmers, stickers, oil and wax named here, and does not sell finished candles. This page still tells you not to put trimmers in gift sets as a fix, that the cheaper wick is usually the better answer, and that our captured sticker listing does not describe its printed wording.

Every price was verified on CSI's live store on 1 October 2026. Stock was checked per size: the Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock on that date and is flagged wherever it appears; every other size shown is in stock. Product wording is quoted from the pages; where a page is silent in the text we captured, we say so.

The 7.5 cm jar, 175 g fill, 200-candle month, 40 gift sets, 5% allowance, lead time and branch thresholds are worked examples or our judgement; flame and melt-pool figures are commonly cited rules of thumb, not CSI data; CSI publishes no wick-performance or soot data. Frequently asked questions

Why does my candle smoke when the wick is long?
A long wick carries more fuel to the flame than it can burn cleanly, so the flame grows, carbon builds on the tip and unburnt soot escapes. Every wick does this if left long enough; the question is whether yours does it at the length a normal session leaves.
Is a smoking candle wick too big?
Only if it smokes at realistic lengths. If it smokes after one normal, untrimmed session, test one rung down (Eco C2 → Eco C1, three candles, full life). If it smokes only after several untrimmed sessions, the wick is fine and a care label is the right fix.
Should I include a wick trimmer with my candles?
As a priced gift feature, yes if you like. As a fix for smoke, no. A ₹177.00 trimmer adds ₹59.00 a candle in a three-candle set, far more than a sticker (₹0.83) or the wick saving (₹3.54).
How much do candle care stickers cost per candle?
From CSI's Candle Care Stickers Roll, ₹0.83 a candle from the roll of 500 (1 inch, ₹413.00) or ₹0.70 from the roll of 1,000 (1.5 inch, ₹699.00). Check the printed wording on WhatsApp before you buy.
Does a thinner wick smoke less?
Often, because it feeds a smaller flame, but it can also leave a ring of unmelted wax. That is why the smaller wick has to pass the full life: reach the glass by burn 3, stay calm at realistic lengths, and finish without drowning.
How long should a candle wick be trimmed?
Many makers trim to about 5–6 mm before every burn; one CSI trimmer page says "Trim your wick to 1/4 inch before every burn". Design the candle so it stays acceptable when a customer forgets once.
Smoky only when long
Measure the smoke length, then buy for the branch you are in.
Wick branch: an Eco C1 20-pack (₹118.00) and three test candles, saving ₹3.54 a candle if it passes. Maintenance branch: a care sticker on every candle (₹0.83). Trimmers only where the set price carries them.

Editorial standards & sources
About this guide: part of CSI's cluster on tunnelling, flame, soot and melt-pool decisions (5541–5560) in the series on wick purchase × jar × wax × fragrance. This page owns the per-candle economics of the two fixes for a candle that smokes only when the wick is left long: a smaller wick (money saved per candle) against care stickers and trimmers included in sets (money added per candle), and which is the honest choice in each branch.

Customer reviews: The six reviews at the top of this page are genuine, published Judge.me reviews left by CSI customers on the product pages named on each card — Eco Candle Wicks, Fresh Strawberries, Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 (Flakes Form) For Container Candles, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks for Jar / Container Candles. They are general product reviews, not assessments of the wick-purchase advice on this page. Names, star ratings, dates and products are as recorded by Judge.me and wording is unedited. "Verified buyer" appears only on reviews Judge.me recorded as verified — Uchu Omoide, Monika Deep, Sakshi Jain, Jaya Sawlani. The reviews from Kavitha murthy, Ashwini are published but not recorded as verified, and carry no badge. Reviews below five stars are included as published, not filtered out.

Non-price figures: load is a percentage of total candle weight (175 g at 8% = 14 g oil + 161 g wax). The 7.5 cm inside diameter, 175 g fill, 200-candle month (80 singles, 40 three-candle sets), 5% allowance, 10-day lead time and 7-day safety stock are labelled worked examples. Ceilings are as the pages state (Fresh Strawberries 6–9% for candles; Chunks up to 13%): formulation limits, not regulatory ones. Flame height (about 2.5–5 cm), trim length (about 5–6 mm) and melt-pool time (about an hour per 2.5 cm) are commonly cited rules of thumb. Costs exclude jars, labour, freight, packaging and GST. Diwali 8 November 2026 is a calendar fact.
