Quick answers — read this first
Why does my fragrance oil smell different in the candle than in the bottle? Three things change at once. Concentration: 16 g of oil in 200 g of wax is 16 g in 216 g of poured candle — 7.4%, or 13.5 times weaker than the neat bottle. Material: soy is a solid fat that holds heavy base notes tightly and lets light top notes go. Temperature: a bottle at 30°C and a melt pool at melting heat release completely different parts of the same oil.

Is a different smell in the candle a sign of a bad oil? Usually not. A candle that reads heavier, sweeter, softer or less sharp than the bottle is behaving exactly as the oil was built to behave. Suspect a real fault only when you get a burnt, solvent or sour note that was never in the bottle, when two jars from one batch differ, or when you can smell your previous scent.

Which part of the scent survives into the candle? The heart and the base carry the candle. Roasted Coffee publishes top notes of fresh coffee beans over a base of vanilla and caramel — in wax the base is what you live with. Citrus Lemon publishes zesty lemon and lime on top with a tangy mandarin base, which is why a lemon candle smells rounder than the bottle.

How do I check whether the difference is normal? Smell the same oil in four places on one evening: the bottle, a paper blotter at 24 hours, a cured chip of your own wax, and the lit jar. Two votive pours per oil cost about ₹86.15 each in materials. If the blotter dry-down already smells like your candle, nothing is wrong.
The short answer
Normal: the candle is the same oil at 7.4% of the poured mass, read from the base upwards instead of from the top down.
Also normal: soy has a faint character of its own, dye and jar change what you expect before you smell anything, and a lidded jar concentrates what an open bottle never had to hold. CSI 464 is described on its page as giving a creamy, opaque finish.
Not normal: a burnt or solvent edge, two jars from one batch smelling different, or the previous scent turning up in the new one. Those three are process faults, and every one of them is fixable this week.

What it shows: fragrance as a share of the mass in front of your nose. An open bottle is effectively 100% fragrance; a 200 g candle at the default 8% of wax weight holds 16 g of oil in 216 g of poured candle, or 7.4% — 13.5 times weaker. Even at the 13% ceiling that CSI’s Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page publishes, the candle is 8.7 times weaker than the bottle. Deliberately left out: how much of that fragrance the wax actually releases into a room, which no supplier publishes and only your own burn test can tell you.
Straight answer
Why does the same fragrance oil smell different in a finished candle than it does in the bottle?
Because you are smelling two different things. In the bottle you meet neat fragrance concentrate in a saturated headspace, and what reaches you first is the most volatile fraction — the top notes. In a candle you meet the same oil at 7.4% of the poured mass (16 g of oil in 200 g of wax at the default 8% of wax weight, 13.5 times weaker than the bottle), dissolved in a solid fat that binds heavy materials far more willingly than light ones, then released either slowly at room temperature or quickly from a hot melt pool. The published structures make the direction predictable: Roasted Coffee lists fresh coffee beans on top and vanilla and caramel at the base, Blue Ocean lists sea salt and ozone on top and driftwood and musk at the base, Citrus Lemon lists zesty lemon and lime over a tangy mandarin finish. In every case the bottle sells you the opening and the candle delivers the ending, so a candle that smells heavier, sweeter, softer, less sharp is not a fault — it is the same oil read from the other end. Three differences are faults, and they are worth ruling out tonight: a burnt, solvent or sour note that was never in the bottle (usually heat or a dirty pitcher), two jars from one batch that do not match (usually an under-stirred pot, and the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for a slow two-minute stir at 80–90°C), and the previous scent arriving with the new one (carryover). At 8% in CSI 464, a 200 g Roasted Coffee candle carries ₹59.81 of oil and ₹107.38 of wax and wick, so the whole diagnosis costs less than two jars of stock.
One line: The bottle is the opening and the candle is the ending of the same oil — judge it in cured wax, and only call it a fault if the note is burnt, uneven between jars, or somebody else’s scent.
The short version: the same oil at 7.4% of the poured mass instead of 100%, held in a fat that keeps base notes and lets top notes go. Judge it in cured wax, not at the neck of the bottle — three trial bottles to run the test cost ₹421.64.

Why the bottle and the candle can never smell the same

You are not comparing two smells. You are comparing a raw material with a finished product made mostly of something else.

Here is the situation as makers usually describe it on WhatsApp. You bought Roasted Coffee Fragrance Oil — opened the bottle, got that dark espresso hit, and ordered the kilo. You poured 200 g candles in Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 at 8% of wax weight, waited three days, lit one, and what filled the room was sweet: caramel, cream, something closer to a coffee dessert than to a roastery. Nothing smells wrong. It just does not smell like the bottle you approved. The obvious conclusion — wrong batch, weak oil, something missing — is almost always the wrong one.

Three things change between the neck of that bottle and the jar on your customer’s table, and all three push in the same direction. The first is arithmetic. Neat oil in a bottle is, for practical purposes, 100% fragrance. Your candle at 8% of wax weight carries 16 g of oil in 200 g of wax, which is 16 g in 216 g of poured candle, or 7.4% of the mass in front of you. That is 13.5 times weaker. Push to the 13% maximum that the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page publishes and you are still at 11.5%, or 8.7 times weaker. There is no load available to any maker at which a candle approaches bottle strength, and that is not a limitation to be worked around — it is what a candle is.

The second is the material. A bottle holds fragrance in fragrance. A candle holds fragrance in a solid fat, and fats are not neutral hosts. Heavy, oily, non-volatile materials — vanillin, musks, resins, woods, ambers — are chemically at home in wax and stay dissolved in it, coming out slowly and steadily. Light, thin, volatile materials — citrus terpenes, aldehydes, sharp green and ozonic notes — are the ones that would rather be in the air, and in a soy candle a good share of them leave during the pour, the set and the first days on the shelf. This is general candle-making behaviour rather than a CSI measurement: no supplier publishes how much of each fraction a given wax retains, ours included.

The third is temperature and timing. A bottle sniff is a three-second event at room temperature from a saturated headspace — the air in the neck has been sitting over neat oil for weeks and is thick with whatever evaporates most readily. A candle is a three-hour event. Cold, it releases only what the surface will give up at 28°C in a Chennai living room. Lit, it works from a melt pool at melting heat, which drives out heavier material the bottle never showed you at all. So the bottle is a snapshot of the most volatile part of the oil, and the candle is a slow performance of the rest of it.

One more factor sits outside the wax entirely: your own expectation. You smelled the bottle while you were excited about it, with no distraction and no context. You smell the candle in a room that already has its own smells, after twenty minutes of pouring the same scent, looking at a jar whose colour tells your brain what to expect. A cream-coloured candle reads sweeter than a white one with the identical oil in it. None of that is measurable, and all of it is real — which is why the test later on this page insists you smell the four windows in a fixed order, on the same evening, before you decide anything.

Four windows on the same oil, and the only one your customer buys

Every oil shows you a different face depending on where you meet it. Three of those faces are for you. One is for the customer.

Most disappointment with fragrance oil comes from approving it at window one and selling it at window four. The four windows are the open bottle, the paper blotter at dry-down, a cured chip of your own wax, and the lit jar. They are not four qualities of oil; they are four stages of the same oil, and each predicts the next better than the bottle predicts anything.

Window two is the one most Indian makers skip, and it is free. Put two drops on a strip of paper, write the oil and the date on it, and smell it after ten minutes and again the next morning. What you get at ten minutes is roughly the bottle. What you get the next morning — after the volatile fraction has gone and the heavy materials are all that is left on the paper — is a remarkably good preview of what your cured candle will smell like. If the 24-hour blotter smells like your candle, your candle is correct and your expectation was the thing that was wrong.

Build a blotter card before you build a range

Take one sheet of thick paper, cut it into ten strips, and run every oil you own through the ten-minute and 24-hour check on the same day, in the same room, with the strips lined up. Write the oil, the date and one word for each stage on every strip. This costs nothing, takes twenty minutes and gives you the single most useful reference document in a small candle business: your own record of where each oil travels. Do it again when a new lot arrives, and you can compare the new dry-down against the old one rather than against a memory. What a normal shift looks like, oil by oil

The direction of travel is not a mystery. On most CSI pages it is printed as a note structure, top to base.

Where a product page publishes a top, middle and base for an oil, it is telling you in advance which part will lead in the bottle and which part will lead in the candle. Read it as a forecast. The table below takes six in-stock CSI oils whose pages publish that structure and sets the bottle-led note against the candle-led one, with what 16 g of each costs in a 200 g candle at 8% so you can see that the shift has nothing to do with price.

Read down that fourth column and a pattern appears. Every one of them moves the same way: towards the base. A citrus goes rounder. An aquatic goes softer and woodier. A spice goes creamier. A woody goes darker. If your candle has moved in that direction, you have a normal candle — and if you wanted the bottle’s opening in the room, no load and no wax will give it to you, because the material that made the opening is the material a candle loses first.

Family by family, what to expect

Citrus and fresh. The biggest apparent loss of all, and the family that most often gets an oil returned. Citrus Lemon, whose page states approximately 0% vanillin and a soy load of 6–10% of wax weight, will always read quieter and rounder in wax than in the bottle. Its page asks for a full 48 to 72 hour cure precisely because citrus needs the time. Aquatic and ozonic. Same story with an extra twist: the base often carries the room. Blue Ocean’s published driftwood-and-musk base is what people describe as “clean laundry” after three days in a jar, even though the bottle smelled of sea air.

Florals. Usually the best-behaved translation, because floral materials tend to sit in the heart rather than the top. British Rose publishes a single-note rose build with a flash point of 192°C, 0% vanillin and a soy load of up to 10%; the candle reads softer than the bottle but recognisably the same flower. Gourmands. These often smell better in wax than in the bottle, which surprises people: the sugar-and-vanilla materials that read as cloying at full strength become the thing that carries the room at 7.4%. Woods, oud and amber. The most faithful of all, and the family where a bottle sniff undersells the candle badly.

One visual footnote on the gourmand families, because it changes how a candle seems to smell. Oils built on vanilla and amber materials contain vanillin, and vanillin warms the colour of white wax over time. The Roasted Coffee page states that its vanilla and caramel base notes contain vanillin, which can cause slight yellowing in white wax over time, and adds that the discolouration is cosmetic only and does not affect burn performance. Cinnamon Vanilla publishes 2.5% vanillin with a moderate discolouration risk in light wax. A jar that has gone cream in three weeks will be described by customers as smelling sweeter than the one they bought, even when the oil in it has not moved at all.

Six differences that are not normal

Different is normal. Wrong has a smell of its own, and it is usually your process rather than the bottle.

Everything so far has been the oil behaving as built. These six are not. Each has a characteristic smell, a check you can run without buying anything, and a fix. Work down the table in order — the cheap checks are first for a reason.

Adding the oil to wax that is hotter than the page window. This is the single most common cause of a genuinely wrong note, and it is invisible without a thermometer — melted wax at 95°C and at 85°C look identical. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page gives melting at approximately 80–85°C, fragrance at 80–90°C with a slow two-minute stir, and a pour at 75–80°C. Eco Soy CSI 400 asks for fragrance at 85°C within an 80–90°C band. Overshoot and the light top-note materials you were hoping to keep are the first to go, while some materials take on a scorched edge. Fix: a Pen Thermometer at ₹354.00 and the discipline of reading it at the moment of adding. Flash point is a separate matter — it is a transport and handling property, not the temperature at which fragrance burns off — and the 80–90°C window sits well below the flash points most CSI oil pages publish, such as 192°C for British Rose and approximately 191–193°C for Roasted Coffee.
One pitcher, four scents, one afternoon. Wax residue in a pouring pitcher holds fragrance, and the next batch inherits it. A maker pouring coffee, then lemon, then lavender in one session will find the lemon candle has a coffee floor and blame the lemon oil. The check costs 60 g of wax: melt plain wax in the suspect pitcher and smell it. Fix: wash and dry between families, keep a second Steel Pouring Pitcher at ₹708.00 for the 600 ml size if you run gourmands and fresh scents in the same day, and finish with Isopropyl Alcohol Spray at ₹383.00 for 150 ml — sprayed, wiped and allowed to dry completely, because alcohol that has not flashed off is itself a contaminant.
Thirty seconds of stirring instead of two minutes. Fragrance oil and molten wax are not instantly miscible, and a fast stir leaves a pot that is richer at the bottom than the top. Pour that and the first jars are under-scented while the last are over-scented, and none of them matches the bottle. Under-stirring also shows up later as oily patches on the surface of the set candle. Fix: two full timed minutes, slowly — fast stirring whips air in, which brings its own surface problems — and pour the whole pitcher rather than leaving a heel to stand and separate.
Reordering a name instead of a product page. A fragrance name is not an identifier. CSI’s collection is large, several oils share words or a whole name with another listing, and the note structure printed on one listing does not carry across to another. If you approved an oil, put the product page and the pack size in your recipe sheet, bookmark the page, and reorder from it — not from a search box and not from a screenshot. This matters most when you have already sold the candle: a customer reorder that smells different is a much more expensive problem than a test pour that does. Ask for the technical sheet on WhatsApp if you want it in writing before a production run.

One honest note on cure, because it is the most common false alarm on this list. A candle test-burned on day two is not showing you the finished product. Several CSI oil pages give 48 to 72 hours as a cure time, and that is a fair statement of the earliest point at which a candle can be usefully burned. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page goes further and asks for a minimum of 48 hours, ideally one to two weeks, before burn testing — and 14 to 21 days is standard practice for soy container candles. If your day-two candle smelled thin and your day-fourteen candle does not, nothing was ever wrong with the oil.

Festive timing, because this test needs days not hours: Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November 2026. For a 14 to 21 day cure plus courier time, festive candles should be poured by about mid-October — so the bottle-versus-jar decision on a new scent needs making in September. Fifty 200 g Roasted Coffee candles at 8% cost ₹8,359.40 in wax, wick and oil.

One evening, one oil, four windows: the test that settles it

Two votive jars and a strip of paper will tell you more than a month of arguing with your own memory.

This is deliberately small. You are not testing whether the oil is good — you are testing whether the difference you noticed is the normal bottle-to-base shift or a fault in your process. One oil, two 70 g votives, one blotter, one evening of smelling and one week of waiting. In materials, each votive costs about ₹86.15 with Roasted Coffee in it: ₹30.44 of wax, ₹31.86 for the jar, ₹5.90 for the wick and ₹17.94 of oil at 8% on a 60 g fill.

Window 1 and 2 on the same evening, before you melt anything. Smell the bottle once, briefly, and write down three words. Then put two drops on a paper strip, label it with the oil and the date, and smell it at ten minutes. Write three more words. Leave the strip somewhere dark and dry overnight. Do not smell the bottle again tonight — repeated sniffing flattens your judgement quickly, which is exactly why a pour-day nose is a poor judge.

Pour two identical votives, with the thermometer in the pot. Weigh 120 g of CSI 464 for the pair, melt it, and check the temperature at the moment you add the oil: 9.6 g total for the two, which is 8% of 120 g. Stir slowly for two full timed minutes, pour both White Matte Votive Jars from the same pitcher within a minute of each other, and wick them identically with C1. Two jars from one pour is the whole point — if they later disagree, your stirring is the fault and no amount of oil-swapping will fix it.

Window 3 at 24 hours, then again at day 7 and day 14. Smell the 24-hour blotter first and write three words; then smell the unlit votives from about 10 cm. Compare the words. In most cases the blotter dry-down and the cold candle will read as the same thing, and both will differ from your bottle notes — that is your answer, and the oil is behaving. Record the colour too: the Cinnamon Vanilla page publishes 2.5% vanillin and a moderate risk of the wax warming in tone, and colour change over two weeks is worth logging alongside the smell.

Window 4: burn one votive at day 14, keep the other sealed. Burn one jar for two hours in a closed room of ordinary size, then walk out, wait five minutes and walk back in — you cannot judge throw with a nose that has been sitting in it. Then compare against your notes. The second votive stays unburned and labelled as the reference for the next lot of the same oil. That single sealed jar is worth more than any certificate when you need to know whether a new bottle matches the one your customers already bought.

Two practical warnings about the test itself. First, smell in a fixed order — bottle, blotter, cold jar, lit jar — and never go back up the order on the same evening, because the bottle will overwhelm everything after it for several minutes. Second, do this in the room the candle will actually be used in, not in your pouring space. A workshop that has smelled of coffee all afternoon cannot tell you what a coffee candle smells like, and this is the most common reason a maker declares an oil dead on arrival and orders a replacement that behaves identically.

Putting words on the difference — and what to send us

“It smells different” cannot be diagnosed. “It smells thinner and slightly burnt” can be fixed on the first reply.

A vocabulary is a diagnostic tool. The words below are the ones makers actually use, with what each usually points to. Use them in your own notes, and use them when you message a supplier — including us — because the difference between a useful answer and a generic one is almost always the specificity of the description.

Keep one sealed jar from every approved batch

The reference jar is the cheapest quality system in candle making. One unburned 70 g votive per approved scent, sealed, labelled with the oil, the product page, the load in grams and the pour date — about ₹81.80 of materials with Citrus Lemon in it. When a new kilo arrives, pour one votive from the new lot and smell it against the reference. That is a real batch-to-batch comparison, and it is the only way to answer a customer who says this year’s candle is not like last year’s. Label with Candle Care Stickers at ₹413.00 for 500 if you want them to look like part of the brand.

What this changes about how you buy fragrance oil

Stop approving oils at the neck of the bottle and the whole problem disappears from your business.

The practical conclusion is a buying rule, not a formulation change. Buy the small pack first. CSI lists 15 gm bottles on many oils from ₹68.44 — enough for four 200 g candles at 8% with a little over — and a 15 gm bottle that fails in wax has cost you less than a coffee. Then approve in cured wax at your own load, in your own jar, and only then buy the kilo. The per-gram rate rewards the kilo heavily: Citrus Lemon runs ₹5.43 a gram at 15 gm and ₹2.83 at 1 kg, so the discipline of testing small costs you almost nothing and saves the cost of a kilo you cannot use.

Two honest limits on that advice, against our own interest. Not every oil has a 15 gm pack — Blue Ocean starts at 50 gm at ₹247.00, and several of the perfume-grade oils start at 50 g — so for those the trial costs more and it is worth pouring the full two-votive test rather than one hopeful jar. And a trial bottle tells you about that bottle. It does not guarantee the next lot, which is why the sealed reference jar in the tip above matters more than any single test. The page publishes a full build — zesty lemon and lime on top, bright grapefruit and orange in the middle, tangy mandarin at the base — a soy load of 6–10% of total wax weight, paraffin at 6–8%, approximately 0% vanillin, and a cure of 48 to 72 hours with the note that citrus benefits from a full cure for the best cold throw. That makes it the best teaching oil on this page: the bottle is sharp, the candle is round, and the page told you so in advance.

It is also the cheapest way to see the effect. At ₹2.83 a gram in the kilo, 16 g in a 200 g candle is ₹45.31, and a 15 gm trial bottle is ₹81.42. Roasted Coffee Fragrance Oil

Published build: fresh coffee beans on top, dark chocolate and espresso in the middle, vanilla and caramel at the base, with a soy load of 6–10% of total wax weight, a flash point of approximately 191–193°C and a cure of 48 to 72 hours. This is the oil that produces the most “it smells different” messages, and the page explains why in one line: the ending is sweet and the opening is not.

The page also states that its vanilla and caramel base notes contain vanillin, which can cause slight yellowing in white wax over time, and that the discolouration is cosmetic only and does not affect burn performance. Plan an ivory or dark jar rather than a bright white one and the visual half of the surprise disappears too. Published build: sea salt and ozone on top, jasmine and lily of the valley in the middle, driftwood and musk at the base, with a flash point of 143°C, 0% vanillin and a stated load of up to 10% for soy, paraffin and natural wax blends. The 0% vanillin figure makes it one of the safe choices for a white or pastel jar, which matters here because an aquatic is usually sold in pale packaging.

Why does my fragrance oil smell different in the candle than in the bottle?
Because the candle holds the same oil at 7.4% of the poured mass at an 8% load, dissolved in a solid fat that keeps heavy base materials and releases light top materials early, and releases it at room temperature or from a hot melt pool rather than from a saturated bottle neck. The bottle shows you the opening; the candle delivers the ending. Every family moves in the same direction — towards the base.
Will a higher fragrance load make the candle smell more like the bottle?
No. Going from 8% to the 13% maximum that the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page publishes lifts the fragrance share of the poured candle from 7.4% to 11.5% — still 8.7 times weaker than the bottle — and it lifts the base notes as much as the top notes, so the balance does not change. Remember that two ceilings apply: the wax page’s maximum and the oil page’s stated candle range, and the lower figure governs.
How long should I wait before judging the scent of a new candle?
Several CSI oil pages give 48 to 72 hours as a cure time, and that is the earliest a candle can usefully be burned. The Chunks page asks for a minimum of 48 hours and ideally one to two weeks before burn testing, and 14 to 21 days is standard practice for soy container candles. Judge at day 14, not day 2, and keep the day-2 note for comparison.
My candle smells burnt rather than just different. What causes that?
Almost always heat at the moment of adding, or wax held hot for a long stretch in a melter. Add inside the window the wax page publishes — 80–90°C for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and for Eco Soy CSI 400 — and read the pot with a thermometer as you add rather than before. Flash point is unrelated: it is a transport and handling property, and the published flash points on CSI oil pages, such as 192°C for British Rose, sit far above the pour window.
Two candles from the same batch smell different. Is that the oil?
No — that is dispersion. Fragrance oil does not mix into molten wax instantly, so a short stir leaves a pitcher that is richer at the bottom than the top. Stir two full timed minutes slowly, as the Chunks page asks, and pour the whole pitcher in one go rather than leaving a heel to stand. If three jars from one pour still disagree after that, look at contamination in the pitcher next.
Does the jar change how the fragrance smells?
It changes how much of it reaches you and what you expect before you smell it. A lidded jar re-concentrates the headspace, so the first sniff after opening is much stronger than the room ever is; a wide jar gives a bigger melt pool and a faster release than a narrow one at the same load; and colour sets expectation, so an ivory candle reads sweeter than a white one with identical oil.
