CSI Soot Diagnosis · Black Rim on Long Burns
If the rim blackens after every long burn, the wick has no margin at that session length. Choose the longest session you will print, burn two wicks to the floor at that length, photograph the rim after every burn, and approve only the wick that never marks it.

Quick answers — read this first
My jar turns black around the rim after every long burn. What should I test before I sell it? Test the candle at the longest session you will allow customers, which you choose and print on the label (four hours is a common care-label figure). Burn three candles of your current wick and three one CSI rung down, all to about 1 cm from the bottom, in still air after a 5–6 mm trim, and photograph the rim after every session.

What counts as a pass? Write it before burn 1. Ours, labelled: no black mark on the rim or upper glass in any photo or on a white tissue wiped around the rim, no visible smoke, and a soot card no darker than your reference, for all three candles in every third. One marked rim fails the wick.

Can the label fix it? No. A care label carries a tested burn time, trimming and placement to the customer. It is a complement to a wick that passes, not a cure for one that doesn't.

What does the test cost? From C2, the Eco C1 20-pack (₹118.00) covers arm B and a margin candle; from Cotton Braided, an Eco C2 10-pack (₹94.40). CSI has no half-sizes between C1, C2 and Cotton Braided.
The short answer
The cause, usually: on a long burn the wick grows and caps, the pool deepens and the flame draws more fuel than it burns cleanly; a draught makes it worse. Rim soot after every long burn means the wick has no margin at that session length.
The test: sessions at your chosen maximum (4 hours here), three candles per wick, full life, rim photo and tissue wipe after every session, white card at hours 2, 3 and 4.
The candidates: your current wick (arm A) and one CSI rung down (arm B), plus one margin candle per arm at 6-hour sessions to show what happens when a customer burns longer than the label.
The decision: approve the arm with no marked rim in any approval candle; write the label from the margin candle; never approve on the margin candle.
The rim-photo grid: one cell per photo 4-hour sessions, photographed after cooling. Illustrative results. session (4 h each; margin row 6 h) 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 A1 current A2 current A3 current A: fails B1 one down B2 one down B3 one down B: passes B-6h margin label line clean rim faint mark black mark One marked cell in any approval candle fails the arm. The margin row sets your label line; it never approves a wick.
The test as it looks on paper: one row per candle, one cell per session, each cell a rim photo taken after the candle cools. Arm A, the current wick, marks the rim after nearly every 4-hour session, which matches the complaint. Arm B, one CSI rung down, stays clean in all three candles through the whole jar and passes. The margin candle on the arm B wick, burned 6 hours at a time, starts to mark from its second session: that is the evidence for printing a maximum burn time on the label. Illustrative results, not CSI data.
Straight answer
My glass jar turns black around the rim after every long burn. What should I test before approving the candle for sale?
Test the candle the way customers will burn it, at the longest session you are prepared to allow, and approve it only if the rim stays clean on every candle to the bottom of the jar. Choose the session length first: four hours is a common care-label figure; if your customers burn longer, test longer or print the limit. Burn two arms: three candles of your current wick and three one CSI rung down (Cotton Braided → C2 → C1), same formula, trimmed to 5–6 mm, in still air, in 4-hour sessions, to about 1 cm from the bottom. Record the evidence: a white card held briefly above the flame at hours 2, 3 and 4, and after each session, once cool, a rim photo from a fixed position and a white tissue wiped once around the inside rim. Apply a written rule: one marked rim in any candle fails that wick. Add one margin candle per arm at longer sessions; it doesn't approve anything, it tells you what to print on the label. A care label then carries the tested burn time, trimming and placement to the customer. It complements a passing wick; it never rescues a failing one.
One line: pick your maximum session, burn three candles per wick to the floor at that length, photograph the rim after every burn, and approve only the wick that never marks it.
The pre-approval test, priced: from C2, one Eco C1 20-pack (₹118.00) for arm B and its margin candle, with 16 spare; from Cotton Braided, an Eco C2 10-pack (₹94.40). Your own C2, oil and jars cover arm A. In stock on 7 October 2026; the C1 10-pack is not.

What a long burn does to the flame

Short burns are kind to a wick. Customers don't burn short.

In a short session the wick is close to its trimmed length, the pool is still forming and the glass is cool, so even a strong wick can look clean. Every extra hour shifts the balance. The pool deepens and warms, so the wick is fed more fuel. The wax surface drops, so more wick stands above it unless it burns away as fast. Carbon that the flame doesn't burn off collects on the tip as a cap, which behaves like a bigger wick. The jar warms, the room warms, and the evening's fan or AC goes on. A flame that was inside its comfort zone at hour two can be past it by hour four or five, and the soot it then makes rises with the hot plume and settles on the cooler glass at the rim.

"After every long burn" is a useful detail. It means the wick has no margin at that session length, from the top of the jar, not only near the end. If the marks appeared only in the lower jar, the explanation would lean on depth and heat build-up, which is the late-jar soot hub. If they appear only when a fan is on, it is airflow (fan or AC soot with a correct wick). Here the trigger is duration, and the approval question is: at the longest session you will tell customers is fine, does the rim stay clean?

Safety first, plainly: a candle that blackens its rim is making visible soot; stop any test session that smokes continuously and record it as a fail. Never judge glass heat by touch; use your own non-contact thermometer at marked points (CSI lists none; our Pen Thermometer is for wax). The "Safe for hot pour up to 85°C" wording on our 150 g jar pages is a pour limit, not a burn rating. Leave a wax floor (about 1 cm is a common rule of thumb). Don't let the margin candle run unattended, and don't promise a "soot-free" candle on any label.

Why the rim blackens: the causes, ranked

Two causes belong to the customer's evening. Three belong to your formula. Approval has to cover both.

Ranked by how often each explains rim soot that follows long burns (our judgement), with the test that separates them. The rim-soot attribution method across wick, load and duration is covered in depth in black soot around the rim; this table is the short version you need before designing the approval test.

Cause ranking · black rim after every long burn
Ranked by likelihood for this pattern (judgement) · signs are common observations, not CSI burn data · ₹ from CSI live pricing, 7 October 2026
Cause What you'd see Discriminating test Fix Cost
1. Wick with no margin at that session length (making: wick size) Clean card at hour 2, grey by hour 4; pool deepening; marks even when trimmed and in still air Your wick against one CSI rung down at 4-hour sessions, three candles each, full life Step down one rung, if the smaller one still reaches the glass ₹118.00 (C1 20-pack, from C2)
2. Wick grows and caps through the session (burning: trimming) A carbon cap and a long wick at the end of the session Same candle: compare wick length and cap at hours 2 and 4 A start trim every session; a wick that tolerates a skipped trim Nothing, or ₹177.00
3. Session longer than the wick can handle (burning: duration) Clean at 3–4 hours, marked at 5–6 One margin candle at 6-hour sessions Print a tested maximum burn time; approve at that length Nothing
4. Draught (burning: the room) Soot heavier on one side; flicker; worse with fan or AC Same candle in still air versus near a fan Placement advice; margin in the wick for fan rooms Nothing
5. Heavy oil, high load or dye (making: formula) Rim soot in one scent or colour, not another, on the same wick Same wick: a lighter oil, or a lower load, or undyed A per-fragrance wick, or a lower load within both ceilings Your own oils

Cause 5 is a tendency, not CSI data: vanilla-rich, resinous and dark gourmand oils, higher loads and heavy dye commonly build more carbon; no CSI oil or dye page gives soot data in the text we captured. If your blackening is scent-specific, run the approval test per scent; the per-fragrance posts in this cluster (8% to 10%, vanilla against lavender) set those up. If you can't tell whether the soot is from burning or from blowing the candle out, snuff smoke or burning soot separates them.

The rim-photo and white-card method

If the evidence can't be compared across candles and weeks, it isn't evidence.

Two records do the work. The white card catches soot in the plume while the candle burns, before it reaches the glass. The rim photo and tissue wipe record what the customer will see. The full photo standard (lighting, angle, file naming) is the photo-every-burn post; here is the minimum for an approval test.

Approval evidence · per candle, per session
An in-house method, not a standard · same position, light and distance every time
Record When How What you're looking for
Wick photo Before lighting, and at hour 4 before trimming Beside a ruler, same distance Start length 5–6 mm; growth and cap by hour 4
White card Hours 2, 3 and 4 Held briefly well above the tip, never touching the flame, same height each time Grey or black on the card before you can see it on the glass
Visible smoke Hours 1 to 4 Watch the tip for 30 seconds in still air Any trail or puffs
Rim photo After the candle has cooled Top-down and side, phone on a fixed stand, plain white background Any darkening on the inside rim or upper glass
Tissue wipe After the photo One white tissue, once around the inside rim, photographed beside the candle number Grey or black on the tissue; essential on dark or matte jars
Weight Before and after Scale, lid off Grams per hour; a sharp rise lower in the jar is a warning
Dark and matte jars hide soot from you, not from the customer
On black, amber or matte glass a thin soot film is hard to see in a photo but comes off on a fingertip or a cloth. That is why the tissue wipe is part of the method: it turns an invisible film into a mark you can photograph. Wipe the same arc of rim each time, use a fresh tissue per candle per session, and keep the tissues in numbered envelopes if you want a record. And don't wipe the rim clean between sessions for any other reason: the build-up is the evidence.

Over a full test that is a lot of photos: at about 7 sessions per candle, the six approval candles alone produce about 42 rim photos. Name each file with candle, wick and session (for example A2-S5) so the grid in the diagram builds itself.

The pre-approval test plan and the pass rule

Decide the session length before the first burn. It is the one number the whole approval rests on.

The test uses the series' default test candle, labelled: 200 g at 8% = 16 g fragrance + 184 g wax (load as a percentage of total weight), in your production jar; keep your own fill if it differs and scale the grams. Two arms, three approval candles each, and one margin candle per arm: 8 candles.

1
Choose your maximum session and write the ruleFour hours is a common care-label figure; we use 4 here, labelled. If your customers buy for long festive evenings, choose longer and test longer; soot only after four hours works through that decision. Write the pass rule below on the sheet and sign it.
2
Pour eight identical candlesSame wax, oil lot, load, fill and pour temperature (Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states "Pour Temperature 80°C – 90°C" and "Fragrance Load Up to 10%"), wicks centred. A1–A3 and A-6h on your current wick; B1–B3 and B-6h one CSI rung down. Number the jars.
3
Cure, then burn the approval candles at exactly 4 hoursMany makers start soy burn tests after a 48–72 hour cure. Trim to 5–6 mm at the start only, fans and AC off, candles well apart, room temperature written down. White card at hours 2, 3, 4; out at hour 4; cool fully before the rim photo and tissue wipe.
4
Burn the margin candles at 6 hoursSame method, longer sessions, always attended. They answer one question: what happens when a customer ignores the label? Stop a margin session early if it smokes continuously and record the hour.
5
Burn every candle to about 1 cm from the bottomWorked example: at 7.0 g an hour the 180 g above the floor takes about 25.7 hours, roughly 7 four-hour sessions or 5 six-hour ones. A test that stops halfway approves the top of the jar only (why a two-hour pass isn't enough).
6
Fill in the grid and decideOne cell per session per candle. Approve the arm that meets the rule; take the label line from its margin candle. If neither arm passes, test a pair or a lower load, or ask us on WhatsApp.
The pass rule (ours, labelled)
A wick passes for this jar and formula when all three approval candles, burned in 4-hour sessions in still air after a 5–6 mm start trim, show no black mark on the rim or upper glass in any photo and nothing grey on the tissue after any session, no visible smoke at any check, and a white card at hour 4 no darker than the card at hour 2, in the top, middle and bottom thirds. The margin candle never passes or fails a wick; it sets the label. This is pass/fail and an in-house protocol, not an industry standard; if you want a graded scale with a tolerance, that is the acceptable-soot post.

Care instructions: a complement, not a cure

A label tells customers how you tested. It can't make the wick pass.

Once a wick passes, the label is how your test conditions reach the customer's table. Common care-label guidance, which you should only print if your test supports it: trim the wick to about 5–6 mm before each burn; burn for no more than your tested session length; keep the candle away from fans, AC vents, open windows and draughts; never leave it unattended; stop using it when about 1 cm of wax remains. The margin candle tells you how firm the session line needs to be: if it marked the rim from its second 6-hour session, "burn no longer than 4 hours at a time" is a line your evidence supports.

What a label can't do is fix arm A. If your current wick blackens the rim inside the session length you would print, the label is asking customers to compensate for the wick. Some will trim and time their burns; most won't, and the rim will be in the photo they send you. Soot only after several hours: wick or instructions first? weighs that trade-off; the short version is: fix the wick to pass at the session you'll print, then print it. If a customer still sends a black rim, the customer-photo questions are the next step.

Don't approve at two hours and print four. The session on the label must be the session you tested. Don't approve on the margin candle, in either direction: a clean margin candle is welcome, a marked one is a label line, not a fail. Don't wick down without the full life: a smaller wick that keeps the rim clean but tunnels for the first three burns has swapped one complaint for another. And don't let a sticker carry the wick: "trim every hour" is not a care instruction anyone follows.

The CSI buy list and the step to production

Our wick range is short. Here's exactly what that means for arm B.

CSI's sized, tabbed wicks are three rungs: C1 → C2 → Cotton Braided. Arm B is always one of Cotton Braided → C2, C2 → C1, or a C2 pair → a C1 pair. There is no sized, tabbed wick between C1 and C2 or between C2 and Cotton Braided, no smaller sized, tabbed wick than C1, and one wooden-wick listing with no widths. Rim soot on long burns often needs a smaller correction than a whole rung; if arm B passes on the rim but tunnels, try a lower load on your current wick, or ask us on WhatsApp, and we will tell you plainly if we have nothing in between.

Arm B buy list · smallest in-stock pack
Per-wick ₹ = pack price ÷ wicks · C1, C2 and Cotton Braided cost the same per wick at every pack · Eco C1 10-pack out of stock on 7 October 2026

Performance Wooden C2 (no narrower wood) C2 10 ₹94.40 ₹9.44 6 C2

Argued against our own interest: if arm A passes when you keep to 4-hour sessions and the marks only came from five- and six-hour evenings, the fix is the label line, not a wick, and your purchase is a sticker roll. And because C1 (₹5.90), C2 (₹9.44) and Cotton Braided (₹12.00) cost the same per wick at every pack size, a bigger pack buys stock, not savings. Stepping C2 → C1 saves ₹3.54 a candle: never the reason.

The step to production quantity

Production wicks = candles × wicks per candle × (1 + a defect allowance). Worked example, labelled: 350 single-wick candles a month with a 2% allowance is 357 wicks. If arm B passes on C1, buy 3 × 100 + 50 + 20 = 370 for ₹2,183.00; if it passes on C2, 360 C2 wicks are ₹3,398.40. One 500-sticker care roll (₹413.00) labels the month with 143 to spare. Reorder point = daily use × your lead time + safety stock; CSI publishes no lead times, so ask on WhatsApp. Keep one candle from each production batch for a single 4-hour session and a rim photo: it is the cheapest early warning that a wick or oil lot has changed.

Don't buy 1,000 wicks after the first clean rim. The 1,000-packs are ₹5,900.00 (C1), ₹9,440.00 (C2) and ₹12,000.00 (Cotton Braided), with no per-wick saving. A clean rim on session one is a top-of-jar result; approval is a bottom-of-jar result.
Diwali is 8 November 2026, 32 days from 7 October 2026. Festive evenings are long burns. The approval test (a 3-day cure, then about seven daily 4-hour sessions) takes about 10 days. If your gifting batch depends on it, pour this week and send us your wick and sticker count on WhatsApp for stock, dispatch and a GST invoice.

Argued against our own interest: arm B plus its margin candle need four wicks; the C1 20-pack (₹118.00) is the smallest C1 pack in stock, and no bigger pack is cheaper per wick. In a jar of 8 cm or less, the page's own positioning sits above your jar, which makes rim soot on long burns more likely, and C2 is the arm B wick. ₹12.00 a wick at every pack. Limitation: no tabbed size sits between Cotton Braided and C2; if C2 tunnels and this one blackens the rim, the options are a pair, a lower load, or a question to us.

Candle Care Stickers Roll
Once a wick passes at your chosen session length, the label carries that length to the customer, along with trimming and placement. The page says the stickers help "keep your candles burning clean and strong" (its claim) and lists a 1 inch roll of 500 and a 1.5 inch roll of 1,000. In the text we captured, it does not state what the stickers say, so ask us for a photo of the wording before you rely on it, and print your own tested burn time if the sticker doesn't carry one. Argued against our own interest: a sticker on a candle that fails arm A's test is a warning, not a fix. Don't buy it until a wick passes.

Candle Wick Cutter | Candle Wick Trimmer
Every approval session starts at 5–6 mm, or the rim photos compare wick lengths rather than wicks. CSI lists two Candle Wick Cutters (3 cm and 5.5 cm blades) and a Candle Wick Trimmer whose page says "Trim your wick to 1/4 inch before every burn" and "Perfect Length: Ensures optimal flame height" (the page's claim). Argued against our own interest: scissors that reach the wick do the job for a test; buy a cutter if you trim many candles a day, and the 5.5 cm blade only if the shorter one can't reach the bottom third of your jar.
Listing Price Stock Use
Candle Wick Cutter, 3 cm blade ₹177.00 In stock the 5–6 mm start trim

Skip for now: the sticker roll until a wick passes; any 500- or 1,000-pack before three candles per arm reach the floor; a new oil "that burns cleaner" while the wick question is open; and a non-contact thermometer from us, because we don't list one.

The CSI principle
Test at the session you'll print, to the bottom of the jar, and let the rim decide.
Two arms, three candles each, a rim photo and a tissue after every 4-hour session, one margin candle per arm for the label. From C2 the wicks cost ₹118.00.

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the wicks, wax, tools and labels named here, not finished candles. This page still tells you that the fix may be a label line rather than a wick, that our sticker roll can't rescue a failing wick, that our bigger wick packs cost no less per wick, and that our range has no half-sizes and one wooden width.

Every CSI price was checked on the live store on 7 October 2026, with stock checked per pack: the Eco C1 10-pack is out of stock and is not used, and every other item priced here is in stock on that date. Page wording is quoted and attributed, including the care roll's "burning clean and strong", the Eco wick page's "minimal soot or smoke" and the Cotton Braided page's "exceeding 8 cm".

The four-hour session, 5–6 mm trim and 1 cm wax floor are common rules of thumb or care-label practice. The pass rule, the margin candle, the grid values, the 7.0 g/h example and the production figures are labelled examples or our judgement. Fragrance and dye effects are tendencies, not CSI test data. Soot from the flame settles on the cooler glass at the rim. On long burns the wick grows and caps, the pool deepens and the flame draws more fuel than it burns cleanly; draughts and heavy oils make it worse. If it happens after every long burn, the wick has no margin at that session length.
How long should I burn a candle when testing it?
At the longest session you will allow on the label (four hours is a common figure), repeated until about 1 cm of wax is left, on at least three candles per wick, judging the top, middle and bottom thirds.
How do I test a candle for soot?
Hold a white card briefly well above the flame at hours 2, 3 and 4, and after each session photograph the cooled rim and wipe it once with a white tissue. Compare candles and sessions; any black mark or grey tissue is a fail under a strict rule.
Can I just tell customers to trim the wick to stop soot?
Print it, but don't rely on it. Care instructions complement a wick that already passes at your tested session length; they don't fix one that blackens the rim when burned the way people really burn candles.
What should a candle warning label say about burn time?
The longest session your own test supports, commonly four hours, along with trimming before each burn, keeping away from draughts, never leaving it unattended, and stopping when about 1 cm of wax remains. Check current labelling requirements for your market; this isn't legal advice.
Will a smaller wick stop rim soot?
Often, if the smaller wick still reaches the glass. Test it beside your current wick, three candles each to the end. At CSI one size smaller than C2 is C1 (20-pack ₹118.00); there is nothing in between, so ask us on WhatsApp if you need a finer step.
Black rim after every long burn
Choose your session length, burn two wicks to the floor at that length, and approve only the one that never marks the rim.
From C2 the test wicks cost ₹118.00; from Cotton Braided, ₹94.40. If the smaller wick keeps the rim clean but tunnels, tell us on WhatsApp and we will say plainly what we stock in between, and what we don't.

About this guide: part of CSI's cluster "Black Smoke & Soot on the Jar" (6921–6940) in the series on large flames, soot, smoke, mushrooming and wick purchase. It sets out what to test before approving a candle whose rim blackens after long burns: a cause ranking, the rim-photo, tissue and white-card method, a two-arm full-life test at a chosen session length with margin candles, a pass rule, the role of the care label, a CSI wick buy list and a production step.

Non-price figures: "black around the rim" and "after every long burn" are the reader's description (title). The 200 g test candle at 8% (16 g oil + 184 g wax, load as a percentage of total weight) is labelled; wax ceiling as the page states (Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 up to 10%), a formulation limit, not a regulatory one. The 4-hour approval session and 6-hour margin session are labelled choices; 5–6 mm trim and the 1 cm wax floor are common rules of thumb. Grid results and the 7.0 g/h figure are illustrative. The pass rule is an in-house protocol, not a standard. Costs are materials only and exclude labour, freight, packaging and GST. Diwali 8 November 2026 is a calendar fact; labelling requirements are for you to check, not legal advice.
