My Jar Holds 180 g of Water — How Do I Estimate the Wax Fill Weight Before Buying Wax for 500 Jars?
Aktie
How much wax for 500 jars? Between 71.21 and 74.52 kg net at 8%, depending on the factor. With an example weighed fill of 157.5 g, six test jars and 3% loss, order 76 kg of wax and 6.6 kg of oil.
Was the 180 g measured to the brim or to the fill line? It matters. Water to the brim over-states the candle. Weigh water to the line you will actually pour to. If your 180 g was brim-full, see the brim correction.
Which wax is cheapest for 76 kg? On listed prices, Natural Soy Pearl at ₹32,310.00, then CSI 464 at ₹38,562.40, then Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹45,587.00. Pearl has no published fragrance ceiling in our data; check its page. Comparison below.
From 180 g of water to an estimate band
Weighing water into a jar is the right first move, and you have made it. Because one millilitre of water weighs close to one gram at room temperature, 180 g of water means about 180 ml of space up to wherever you stopped pouring. The candle that will occupy that space is a blend of wax and fragrance oil, and solid wax is less dense than water. How much less depends on the wax, on how warm it was when poured, on how much it shrank as it set, and on whether you topped up.
For planning, candle makers commonly use a factor somewhere around 0.86 to 0.90 g of set wax per ml. It is an approximation, and we label it as one every time we use it. It is not a density we have measured for any CSI wax, and it is not printed on any product page. Its job is to turn one water reading into a sensible range, so that you can buy the right amount of wax for a test rather than for the whole run.
| Factor (approx.) | Finished per jar | Wax / oil per jar | 500 jars: wax | 500 jars: oil |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 0.86 g/ml | 154.8 g | 142.42 g / 12.38 g | 71.21 kg | 6.19 kg |
| 0.88 g/ml | 158.4 g | 145.73 g / 12.67 g | 72.86 kg | 6.34 kg |
| 0.90 g/ml | 162.0 g | 149.04 g / 12.96 g | 74.52 kg | 6.48 kg |
On one jar, the difference between the low and high estimate is 7.2 g, which looks trivial. On 500 jars it is 3.6 kg of finished candle, of which 3.31 kg is wax. That is a 5 kg bag's worth of uncertainty. It is the reason this page does not give you "the" wax figure for 500 jars; it gives you the band and the one step that removes it.
Brim water or fill-line water?
Before trusting the band, check how the 180 g was measured. There are two common ways, and they give very different candles.
| How the water was measured | What 180 g means | Finished candle at 0.88 g/ml | Wax for 500 jars at 8% |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water to your intended fill line | 180 ml of candle space | 158.4 g | 72.86 kg |
| Water to the brim; fill line at 92% of brim (example) | about 165.6 ml of candle space | 145.7 g | 67.03 kg |
| Water to the brim; fill line at 88% of brim (example) | about 158.4 ml of candle space | 139.4 g | 64.12 kg |
If your 180 g was brim-full, the candle is about 12.7 g lighter than the fill-line figure at a 92% fill, or 19.0 g at 88%, and 500 jars would need roughly 5.8–8.7 kg less wax than the first row suggests. The 92% and 88% fill levels are illustrative; your headspace is a style and safety choice. The fix is the same in every case: empty the jar, weigh water again to the exact line you intend to pour to, and start the band from that. The 200 ml jar guide explains why brim volume and fill weight part company.
What guessing costs on 500 jars
Suppose you skip the test and order straight from the band. Using the same allowances (six test jars and 3% loss, working assumptions), the three choices look like this, priced in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and British Rose. The weighed row uses our example fill of 157.5 g.
| Order based on | Wax needed | Wax bought | Wax cost | Oil needed | Outcome if the true fill is 157.5 g |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Low estimate (154.8 g) | 74.22 kg | 75 kg | ₹44,988.00 | 6.45 kg | Short by about 0.52 kg of wax: a mid-run reorder |
| High estimate (162.0 g) | 77.68 kg | 78 kg | ₹46,785.00 | 6.75 kg | About 2.48 kg of wax left over |
| Weighed test pour (157.5 g) | 75.52 kg | 76 kg | ₹45,587.00 | 6.57 kg | About 0.48 kg spare, as planned |
The high-estimate order costs ₹1,198.00 more in wax, and buying 7 kg of oil instead of 6.6 kg adds ₹1,132.80. That is the price of certainty without testing, and many makers would pay it happily. The low-estimate order is the real danger: running out of wax part-way through 500 jars means a second delivery, and a second lot of wax that may pour and set slightly differently from the first. When a client might increase the order covers the related question of buying ahead for a quantity you do not yet know.
Choosing the wax for a 76 kg order
At this size the wax choice moves the bill by thousands of rupees, so it is worth comparing the three container-suitable soy waxes CSI lists at production sizes. The order is the same 76 kg in each case, built from the listed bag sizes. All three are fine at 8% in principle, but only two have a published ceiling: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks up to 13% and CSI 464 up to 10%, as the wax makers' stated formulation maximums. Natural Soy Pearl Wax has no ceiling in our data; check its product page or ask us.
| Wax | Bags | Price | Per kg | Published fragrance ceiling |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Natural Soy Pearl Wax | 50 kg + 2 × 10 kg + 5 kg + 1 kg | ₹32,310.00 | ₹425.13 | Not in our data — check the page |
| Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 | 7 × 10 kg + 5 kg + 1 kg | ₹38,562.40 | ₹507.40 | Up to 10% |
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | 7 × 10 kg + 5 kg + 1 kg | ₹45,587.00 | ₹599.83 | Up to 13% |
Natural Soy Pearl is the only CSI wax with a listed 50 kg bag, and the only one with a genuine bulk break: ₹450.00 a kilo at 1 kg, ₹424.80 at 5, 10 and 50 kg. That is a 5.6% break. Chunks and CSI 464 are flat per kilo. The price gap between Pearl and Chunks on this order is ₹13,277.00. That is real money, but a wax change is a formulation change: the fill factor, the set surface and the way your chosen oil behaves can all differ, so the test pours must be in the wax you will produce in. Do not test in Chunks and produce in Pearl.

The staged order, priced
Here is the whole purchase in the order you would actually place it. Stage one buys the number; stage two buys the run. The six test jars and the 3% pour loss are working assumptions; change them in your own sheet.
| Item | Packs | Covers | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury Soy Wax Chunks | 7 × 10 kg + 5 kg + 1 kg | 76 kg (need 75.52 kg) | ₹45,587.00 |
| or Natural Soy Pearl Wax | 50 kg + 2 × 10 kg + 5 kg + 1 kg | 76 kg | ₹32,310.00 |
| British Rose Fragrance Oil | 6 × 1 kg + 500 g + 100 g | 6.6 kg (need 6.57 kg) | ₹20,343.20 |
| Eco Candle Wicks Thin C1 | 500 + 10 | 510 (500 jars + 10 spare; test wicks came in stage 1) | ₹3,009.00 |
| Run total with Chunks | ₹68,939.20 | ||
| Run total with Pearl | ₹55,662.20 |
Why 510 wicks and not 1,000? The Thin C1 is ₹5.90 a wick at every pack size, so there is no saving in the 1,000-pack. A 500-pack plus a 10-pack covers every jar with ten spares for ₹3,009.00, and the six test jars already used wicks from the stage-one 10-pack. Buy the 1,000 (₹5,900.00) only if the spare 490 will go into your next run. How many extra wicks to keep works through that decision properly. Per jar, the Chunks run comes to about ₹131.35 of wax, oil and wick before the jar itself, excluding labour, packaging, freight and GST.
The record sheet that makes the next order easy
The second time you fill this jar you should not need a water test at all. Keep one line per jar type, and the next 500-jar order becomes a multiplication.
| Field | Example entry | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Jar and supplier | Your 180 ml-to-line jar | The fill belongs to one jar model |
| Water to line (average of 3) | 180 g | Detects a moving fill line |
| Wax and load | Chunks · 8% | The factor changes with the wax |
| Weighed finished fill (average of 6) | 157.5 g | The number you order against |
| Implied factor | 0.875 g/ml | Your own factor, replacing 0.86–0.90 |
| Wick and burn result | Thin C1 · pool reached edge (example) | Stops you re-testing next time |
| Pour loss on the run | Measure it: wax bought − wax in jars | Replaces the 3% assumption |
The implied factor is worth writing down. In our example, 157.5 g from 180 ml is 0.875 g/ml, which sits inside the approximate range but is now your number for this wax in this jar. Use it for the next jar of a similar shape as a better first estimate, and still confirm with a weighed pour. 250 jars at a tested 160 g starts from exactly this kind of confirmed figure.
Measure the real pour loss on this run as well. Weigh the wax you open, weigh what is left at the end, and compare with jars × fill. If your actual loss is 1.5% rather than 3%, your next 500-jar order can be about 1.1 kg lighter on wax. If it is 6%, you have found a process problem worth fixing before the next run. Wastage and margin on larger orders shows how that loss figure feeds into quoting.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. On a 500-jar order the most profitable advice for us would be "round up to the high estimate". This page recommends a ₹1,000 test kit instead, and it names Natural Soy Pearl as the cheapest listed route to 76 kg even though Chunks earn us more per kilo.
Oil and wax prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026. Wick prices are Blog 760's figures verified 10 September 2026, with pack sizes re-checked on 25 September 2026. Every estimate, allowance and total is arithmetic on those prices and on the stated example figures, shown to two decimals.
The 0.86–0.90 g/ml factor, the example weighed fill of 157.5 g, the six test jars and the 3% loss are working assumptions, not CSI measurements or specifications. Stock of multiple 1 kg bottles of one oil is not guaranteed; confirm before production. Non-price figures and assumptions: Water taken as about 1 g per ml. The approximate wax factor of 0.86–0.90 g/ml is a labelled working range, not a CSI specification; it varies by wax, temperature and fill line. The 157.5 g weighed fill is an illustrative example. Six test jars and 3% pour loss are labelled allowances. The 92% and 88% brim fill levels are illustrative. Load is a share of finished weight (oil = weight × load). Fragrance-load ceilings (Chunks up to 13%, CSI 464 up to 10%) are the wax makers' stated formulation maximums, not regulatory limits; Natural Soy Pearl has no ceiling in this data.
