My Large Three-Wick Candle Generates Too Much Heat After Several Hours — How Do I Redesign the Wick System Without Creating Tunnelling?
Aktie
What are the options? A smaller trio, the same trio moved further apart, two wicks instead of three, a shorter maximum burn on the label, or more wax around the pool. In a 12 cm-inside jar, three wicks each have 37.70 cm² of pool to melt, about the same as one wick in a 7 cm jar (38.48 cm²). Three large wicks for that is usually more fuel than the pool needs.
What do I test? Four arms, three candles each, burned to the end: your trio as now, the same trio moved out, a smaller C2 trio moved out, and a two-wick version. Gate 1: pool at the glass by burn two. Gate 2: bottom-third readings inside your own written limits.
What does it cost? If you hold Cotton Braided stock: an Eco C2 10-pack and one sheet of wick stickers, ₹194.40, plus 7 kg of wax (₹3,551.80). Moving your current wicks costs nothing.

Your candle, described precisely
Your symptom, stated exactly: a large container candle with three wicks lights well. For the first hour or two the three flames look calm and the pool joins up. Then, after several hours of one session, the glass gets far hotter than you are comfortable with (measured with your own non-contact thermometer, not your hand), the flames may lean in or grow, and the pool gets deep. It is usually worse in later burns, lower in the jar. You know the obvious fix, smaller or fewer wicks, and you've probably seen what it does: wax left clinging to the glass, a candle that tunnels.
We'll work with one labelled example throughout. Your jar is your own: a 12.0 cm inside diameter container (CSI lists no 12 cm jar; our widest listings are the Apothecary Glass Candle Jar at about 10 cm across the rim and an 11 × 11 × 10 cm clip-top container). The candle is 600 g at 8% = 48 g fragrance + 552 g wax, load as a percentage of total weight. The wicks are three Cotton Braided Wicks Ready Made set in a tight triangle 2.0 cm from the centre, because their page describes them as "engineered for large-diameter candles exceeding 8 cm". If your trio is C2, read every step one rung down.
Note which hour the heat arrives, which burn, and where on the glass it is hottest. If the trio was aggressive from the very first burn, that is three wicks burning aggressively from the start. This post is about heat that builds with time.
Why three wicks pile up heat after several hours
Three wicks in a wide jar start as three small pools that grow and merge. Once joined, each flame sits in a pool the other two are also heating, so the wax round every wick is hotter than that wick alone would make it. That is why multi-wick candles often look perfect in hour one and very different by hour three.
Four things make it worse as a session runs and the candle burns down. The centre gets heat from all three; the tighter the triangle, the hotter and deeper it gets. The shrinking wax mass: lower in the jar there is less wax to soak up heat and more glass above the pool. Flame interaction: close flames draw air towards each other, lean in, lengthen and can merge. Session length: it is cumulative, so hour four is hotter than hour one. The general version of the mechanism, for any wick, is why a wick that looks correct at the top becomes too aggressive lower down; the multi-wick, half-way-down version from the jar-diameter series is multi-wick perfect for the first half, extremely hot near the bottom.
Now the edge. In a wide jar the wax against the glass is melted mainly by the outer side of the nearest flame. With three wicks 2.0 cm from the centre, each wick is 4.0 cm from the wall and only 3.46 cm from its neighbours: lots of overlapping heat in the middle, and the edge reached by heat that has to travel 4.0 cm. That is the trap. The tight triangle is hot in the centre and only just adequate at the edge, so reducing the wicks without moving them takes away edge melting first.
| Layout | Pool area per wick | Wick to wall | Wick to wick | What it tends to do |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Trio, tight (ρ = 2.0 cm), your candle now | 37.70 cm² | 4.0 cm | 3.46 cm | Hot centre, deep middle pool, edge reached last |
| Trio, moved out (ρ = 3.0 cm, half the radius) | 37.70 cm² | 3.0 cm | 5.20 cm | Same fuel spread wider; cooler centre; edge reached sooner |
| Pair on a diameter, 6.0 cm apart | 56.55 cm² | 3.0 cm | 6.0 cm | Less fuel; two points of the edge furthest from both flames |
| For scale: one wick, 7 cm-inside jar | 38.48 cm² | 3.5 cm | — | A pool one C1 or C2 commonly covers (test) |
| For scale: one wick, 8 cm-inside jar | 50.27 cm² | 4.0 cm | — | Where the Cotton Braided page's "exceeding 8 cm" begins |
Read the first column. Three wicks in your jar each have 37.70 cm² to melt, 98% of what one wick has in a 7 cm jar. Three wicks the size CSI's own page positions for jars over 8 cm are, on this arithmetic, sized for more pool than each of them gets. It doesn't prove anything, and burns decide, but it explains why the heat appears once the pools merge, and why a smaller trio is a reasonable thing to test. The positioning question for an even pool is positioning three wicks in a 12 cm jar; we don't repeat it here.
Hot after hours: the causes, ranked
The ranking is our judgement for a three-wick candle that is fine early in a session and too hot after several hours. Signs are common observations, not CSI test data; CSI publishes no flame, soot or glass data for any wick.
| Cause | What you'd see | Discriminating test | Fix | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Wicks set too close (making: layout) | Hottest and deepest in the centre; flames lean inwards; glass evenly warm rather than hot opposite one wick | Same wicks moved out to half the radius, beside your current layout | Re-space with a template and stickers | ₹100.00 for 40 stickers |
| 2. Trio too strong for the pool (making: wick size) | Pool joins fast, then deepens past about 1–1.5 cm (rule of thumb); heat rises every hour; fast wax loss | Smaller trio moved out against the moved-out current trio; weigh g/h | One CSI rung smaller | ₹94.40 (C2 10-pack) |
| 3. Sessions longer than the label (burning) | Fine at 3 hours, hot only at 4–5 hours or longer | Your session log: hours at the first high reading | Test and label one session length | Nothing |
| 4. Draught or a fan (burning) | One side hotter, flames leaning one way, soot on one side | Repeat in still air, fans and AC off | Burn location; care wording | Nothing |
| 5. Wicks not trimmed or drifting (burning / production) | One flame larger; one wick off its mark after pouring | Measure each wick's exposed length and position before lighting | Trim to 5–6 mm; stick tabs on marks | Nothing, or stickers |
| 6. Heavy oil, high load or dye (making: formula) | Mushrooms and soot late; worse in one fragrance or colour on the same layout | Same layout with a lighter oil or unscented | A per-fragrance layout, or a lower load within both ceilings | Your own test |
Causes 1 and 2 overlap; the test below separates them. If moving the same wicks out brings the bottom-third readings inside your limits, size was never the problem. Cause 3 matters more with several flames: maximum burn duration for multi-wick candles. Cause 4 is common under Indian ceiling fans (the ceiling-fan post). Cause 6 is a tendency, not CSI data: heavier oils and higher loads commonly build more carbon, and three wicks means three times the carbon.
Five redesign options, and what each risks at the edge
These are the five levers the brief for this problem allows: smaller, wider, fewer, shorter, more wax. They are not alternatives to testing; each is a hypothesis for the same two-gate test. The table puts them side by side, in the order we'd try them.
| Option | What changes | Late heat | Edge risk (burns 1–2) | Wicks per candle |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A. Move the trio out | ρ 2.0 → 3.0 cm; wall 4.0 → 3.0 cm | Somewhat lower: less overlap in the centre | Lower: flames closer to the edge | ₹36.00 (unchanged) |
| B. Smaller trio, moved out | Cotton Braided → C2, at ρ 3.0 cm | Lower: less fuel per flame | Moderate; spacing protects the edge | ₹28.32 |
| C. Two wicks | Cotton Braided pair, 6.0 cm apart (C2 pair as contingency) | Lower: one flame fewer | Higher: two arcs of edge far from both flames | ₹24.00 (C2 pair ₹18.88) |
| D. Shorter maximum burn | Label 4 h → 3 h, tested at 3 h | Lower per session; the bottom still arrives | Higher if 3 h is too short to reach the glass | ₹36.00 (unchanged) |
| E. More wax around the pool | A wider or heavier jar for the same wicks | Slightly lower; delays the hot zone | Higher: more edge to melt | A new jar, a new test |
A. Move the trio out: the free test, always first
Moving each wick from 2.0 cm to 3.0 cm from the centre takes the wick-to-wall distance from 4.0 cm to 3.0 cm and opens the wick-to-wick distance from 3.46 cm to 5.20 cm. Same wicks, same fuel, less overlap in the centre and more heat delivered to the edge. Half the inside radius is a starting point for testing (our judgement), not a rule. Argued against our own interest: this arm uses wicks you already own. If it passes, you buy nothing from us but a sheet of stickers.
B. A smaller trio, moved out: the likeliest single change
Keep three flames (customers expect them), cut the fuel per flame, and let the spacing protect the edge. From Cotton Braided, "smaller" at CSI is Eco C2: a whole rung, not a nudge. Wick cost falls from ₹36.00 to ₹28.32 a candle (₹7.68 less), a side effect, never the reason. If the C2 trio clears the heat but leaves a ledge, try more spacing or a pair, not a size we don't sell.
C. Two wicks: fewer flames, more edge to cover
Two wicks 6.0 cm apart sit 3.0 cm from the wall on their own side, but the two arcs of glass at right angles to the line between them are furthest from both flames: the classic place for a ledge. Each wick has 56.55 cm² to melt, so a pair usually needs larger wicks than a trio; hence a Cotton Braided pair, with a C2 pair as contingency. Two versus three in principle is two or three wicks for a 12 cm luxury candle; a pair that overheats later is the double-wick post.
D. A shorter maximum burn: a label change that must be tested
If readings only cross your limit in hour four, a 3-hour maximum can be part of the design, but only if the whole full-life test runs at 3-hour sessions and gate 1 still passes (a wide candle may not reach its edge in three hours). Customers burn longer than labels say, so keep margin. It is one option among five, never the first.
E. More wax mass: the weakest lever
A taller fill delays the hot zone, but the bottom of a taller candle is still a bottom. A wider jar lowers heat per area and adds edge to melt. Either is a jar change with its own tests (why the final third matters for a new glass container).
The two-gate test: four arms, three candles each
Four arms, poured the same day from one wax lot and one oil lot into the same jars: A your Cotton Braided trio as now (control); B the same trio moved out; C an Eco C2 trio moved out; D a Cotton Braided pair. Three candles each, 12 in total. Arm A is not wasted: it re-creates the original heat under today's conditions, so the others are compared with a measurement, not a memory. Worked example, labelled: at about 20 g an hour for the trio, the 500 g above a 100 g floor (about 1 cm, a common rule of thumb) is about 25.0 hours, so roughly 7 four-hour sessions per candle. Smaller arms burn more slowly, so weigh your own.
| Measure | How | When | Suggested starting limit (yours to set) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Edge | Photo from above; ledge width with a ruler | Hourly, sessions 1–3 | No ledge at the end of burn 2, or gone by burn 3 |
| Glass | Your non-contact thermometer, same marked points | Hours 2 and 4; hourly in the bottom third | Below your own written limit at every point |
| Flames | Ruler behind, photo level | As glass | Inside your band; no leaning in, no merging |
| Pool depth | Skewer midway between centre and wall | End of each session | No deeper than about 1.5 cm |
| Grams per hour | Weigh before and after | Each session | Steady; a jump in the bottom third is a warning |
| End of life | Ruler, photo | Last session | All flames finish clear of the base, about 1 cm of wax left |

| Fragrance: your oil | 576 g (12 × 48 g) | From stock | your own |
| Arm C: Eco C2 | 9 wicks | C2 10-pack (1 spare) | ₹94.40 |

| Total buying Cotton Braided too | + 3 × 10 Cotton Braided | ₹4,106.20 |
Three 10-packs of Cotton Braided (₹360.00) beat the 50-pack (₹600.00): same price per wick, and you need 24. Two 1 kg packs with the 5 kg (₹3,551.80) beat 5 kg + 1 kg + two 500 g (₹3,564.40). If arm C runs hot too, the contingency arms are a C1 trio and a C2 pair: ₹212.40 for a C1 20-pack and a C2 10-pack. Related: the double-wick candle that becomes dangerously hot near the bottom and what to revalidate after moving from one wick to two.
The CSI buy list and the step to production
CSI's sized, tabbed wicks are three rungs, C1 → C2 → Cotton Braided, with no sized, tabbed wick between C1 and C2 or between C2 and Cotton Braided, none smaller than C1, and one wooden-wick listing with no widths. So a smaller trio from Cotton Braided is a C2 trio, and the step after that is a C1 trio. The braided rolls (Eco Braided Wicks by the metre, the Braided Wick Roll with 100 tabs) are cut-to-length constructions, not half-sizes. If the C2 trio clears the heat but loses the edge, and the Cotton Braided trio holds the edge but cooks the glass, you are between rungs we don't sell: spacing, a pair, the fragrance load (within both ceilings) or a jar change are your levers, or ask us on WhatsApp and we'll say plainly what we have.
| Your trio now | Arms to buy for | Pack and price | Per wick | Left after the test |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cotton Braided | C2 trio moved out | C2 10 ₹94.40 + stickers 40 ₹100.00 = ₹194.40 | ₹9.44 | 1 C2, 7 stickers |
| Cotton Braided, no stock left | All four arms | + CB 3 × 10 ₹360.00 = ₹554.40 | ₹12.00 / ₹9.44 | 6 CB, 1 C2 |
| Eco C2 | C1 trio moved out; C2 pair | C1 20 ₹118.00 + stickers ₹100.00 | ₹5.90 | 11 C1 |
| Eco C1 | Nothing smaller | Spacing, a pair, the formula or the label; ask us | — | — |
| Performance Wooden | No narrower width listed | C2 or Cotton Braided arms; ask us | — | — |
Argued against our own interest: if arm B (your own wicks, moved out) passes both gates, you need nothing from this list except stickers. And because C1, C2 and Cotton Braided cost the same per wick at every pack, buying more now buys you stock, not savings.
The step to production quantity
Only after three full-life candles of the chosen arm pass both gates. Wicks = candles × wicks per candle × (1 + a defect allowance). Worked example, labelled: 100 three-wick candles a month plus 2% is 306 wicks. If the C2 trio passes, buy 3 × 100 + 10 = 310 for ₹2,926.40; a 500-pack is the same ₹9.44 a wick and ties up ₹1,793.60 more cash. If the Cotton Braided pair passes, 204 wicks round to 210 for ₹2,520.00, against ₹3,720.00 for 310 Cotton Braided at today's trio. Stickers: 8 sheets of 40 a month (₹800.00) at this volume. Reorder point = daily use × your lead time + safety stock; CSI publishes no lead times, so ask on WhatsApp. A new wick lot, a new jar batch or a new fragrance in the same layout is a change: re-test it.

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the wicks, wax and accessories named here, not finished candles. This page still tells you to move your own wicks before buying ours, that our bigger wick packs save nothing per wick, that our tabbed range has no sizes between C1, C2 and Cotton Braided, and that our Steel Wick Holder is the wrong tool for this jar.
Every CSI price was checked on the live store on 7 October 2026, with stock checked per pack: the Eco C1 10-pack and the 100-sticker sheet are out of stock and are not offered. Page wording is quoted and attributed, including the Cotton Braided page's "exceeding 8 cm" and the Steel Wick Holder's "up to 9 cm wide".
The 12 cm-inside jar, 600 g fill, 20 g/h, 100 g floor, wick positions, 100 candles a month and 2% allowance are labelled worked examples; the trade-off positions and the half-radius starting point are our judgement; the geometry is arithmetic, not a burn prediction. The flame band, pool depth, trim and floor are common rules of thumb. For bulk pricing, GST invoicing, and MSDS and IFRA documentation on request, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.
