Change Control · Jars · Narrowing toward the base
The wick does not shrink as the candle burns down; the pool does. In a jar that narrows, "correct at the top" says nothing about the bottom. Test the wick where the pool is smallest, with a smaller bracket poured from the start.

Quick answers — read this first
Could a wick that is correct at the top become too powerful later? Yes, it can. The wick stays the same while the pool shrinks. In our illustration the last burn meets only 60% of the first burn's surface, with the glass 9.5 mm closer on every side.

What would I see? Commonly: a pool getting deeper burn by burn, a taller flame, late mushrooming or soot, warmer lower glass and a faster burn rate in the bottom third. Compare with a control, never with a number.

How should I test it? Nine candles — control, approved wick, smaller bracket — all burned to the end, scored by depth band. The bottom band decides approval. See the protocol.

What does it cost? Nine 250 g candles in Chunks and Cinnamon Vanilla with Eco Thick C2 and Thin C1 wicks: ₹2,736.00 in CSI materials.
The short answer
Geometry: Illustration: 9.0 → 6.6 cm over 8 cm, 250 g fills to 6.32 cm. Pool 56.68 cm² at the first burn, 45.30 cm² 3 cm down (index 0.80), 34.21 cm² at the base (index 0.60).
Verdict: KEEP formula data; CONFIRM the top band; REPEAT middle and bottom bands and full life; NEW bracket-down wick from the start.
Decision: Keep the wick, switch to the bracket, adopt a tested end-of-burn line, or change the jar — never keep a wick too strong for the bottom. Both taper directions: straight to tapered.
The wick stays the same size. The pool it serves does not. Straight answer
My new jar narrows toward the bottom — could a wick that is correct at the top become too powerful later?
Yes — the geometry makes it possible, and only a full-life test tells you whether it happens. A wick keeps delivering roughly the same heat while a narrowing jar gives it less and less wax to melt. In our illustration — 9.0 cm at the rim, 6.6 cm at the base, 8 cm deep, a 250 g candle at a labelled 0.88 g/ml — the first-burn pool is 56.68 cm²; three centimetres down it is 45.30 cm² (index 0.80), and at the base 34.21 cm² (index 0.60), with the glass 9.5 mm closer to the flame on every side. What makers commonly see when a wick outgrows its pool is a deepening pool, a taller flame, late soot and warmer lower glass. Keep your formula data. Pour nine candles — control, approved wick, and a smaller bracket from the start — and burn every one to the end, scoring by depth band. The bottom band decides: if the approved wick is worse than the control there and the bracket is not, choose the bracket. CSI materials: ₹2,736.00.
One line: the wick stays the same size while the pool shrinks — approve it at the narrowest depth, not the widest.
A narrowing jar needs a bracket poured from the start and every candle burned to the end. Nine 250 g candles at 8% need about 189.0 g of oil and 2,173.5 g of wax with a 5% allowance: Cinnamon Vanilla 2 × 100 g (₹967.60) and Luxury Soy Wax Chunks 2 × 1 kg + 1 × 500 g (₹1,497.00), plus Eco Thin C1 and Thick C2 wicks. Pour your own approved formula if you have it.

The same wick, a shrinking job

A wick has no idea how deep it is. It keeps burning the same way while the jar closes in around it.

The worry in your title is precise, and geometry supports it. A wick's size sets roughly how much heat it delivers; the jar sets how much wax that heat has to melt. In a straight jar that balance stays the same from the first burn to the last. In a jar that narrows toward the bottom, the wax surface shrinks as the candle burns down while the wick stays the same, so the balance tips further toward the wick with every burn. Your title gives no dimensions, so this page uses a labelled illustration: a jar 9.0 cm inside at the rim and 6.6 cm at the base, 8 cm deep, holding a 250 g candle. At a labelled 0.88 g/ml, 250 g fills it to 6.32 cm, where the first-burn pool is 8.49 cm across.

Base 6.60 cm 34.21 cm² 0.60 3.30 cm 9.5 mm

The fourth column is the one to hold on to. If the wick is right for the first-burn pool — index 1.00 — it is serving only 0.80 of that surface three centimetres down and 0.60 at the base. Put another way, by the last burn the same wick is working in what is effectively a 6.6 cm straight jar, with the glass 9.5 mm closer to the flame on every side than it was on day one. That does not prove the wick will be too strong; many candles cope. It does mean "correct at the top" is not evidence about the bottom.

The CSI principle
Correct at the top is a statement about index 1.00. The candle also has to be correct at every index below it.
In this illustration the last burn meets 60% of the first burn's surface with the same wick. Test the wick where the index is lowest, not where it is highest.

What "too powerful later" looks like

No burn result is published by CSI for any wick in any jar, and the size of each effect depends on your wax, oil and wick. The list below is what candle makers commonly describe when a wick outgrows a narrowing pool. Use it to design the scoring sheet: every item is a line you can measure against a control.

Signs commonly associated with a wick that is strong for its pool · compare with a control, never with a number
Symptoms by depth
Symptom Why a narrowing pool can cause it How to measure
Pool depth increasing burn by burn Same heat, less surface: the pool goes deeper instead of wider Marked skewer at end of each burn
Flame taller in the lower half Fuel supply can outpace what a smaller surface needs Ruler behind flame at fixed times
Mushrooming and soot appearing late Excess fuel not fully burned 0–3 scale; tissue wipe of the glass
Glass warmer in the lower third Flame closer to the wall; jar heated over many cycles Same thermometer, same point, same time into the burn
Faster burn rate late in life More heat into less wax Weight loss ÷ hours, by depth band
Full melt pool reached very quickly Not a problem in itself — a sign the wick has spare capacity Minutes to full pool, by band
"The top burns were slow, so I'll go up a wick size." In a jar that narrows, this is the move that turns a mild top-of-candle problem into a serious bottom-of-candle one. A wick chosen to fix the widest pool is the wick most likely to be too strong at the narrowest. If the top is slow, test whether the ring closes by the middle band before changing anything — and if you do test a larger wick, burn it to the end.

Where the wax sits: the thirds of a narrowing candle

Splitting the fill into thirds of its height shows something the depth table hides: a narrowing jar puts less wax in its lower third than its upper third, so the burns spent in the risky zone are fewer — but they are also the last, when the jar has been heated the most times and is least watched.

Illustrative narrowing jar · 250 g · thirds of the fill height (2.11 cm each) · 0.88 g/ml
How much of the candle burns in each band
Band Candle in band Share Pool diameter range Pool index range
Top third 97.4 g 39.0% 8.49 cm → 7.86 cm 1.00 → 0.86
Middle third 82.9 g 33.2% 7.86 cm → 7.23 cm 0.86 → 0.72
Bottom third 69.7 g 27.9% 7.23 cm → 6.60 cm 0.72 → 0.60

In the illustration the bottom third holds about 28% of the candle, and the pool index runs from 0.72 down to 0.60 across it. That is the band where the approved wick must prove itself, and it is the band a partial burn test never reaches.

Find your own index in two minutes
Measure the inside diameter at your fill surface and just above the base with a caliper. Square each, divide the base figure by the surface figure, and you have your jar's end-of-life index — the share of the first-burn pool the wick will be serving at the last burn. 0.60 means the wick meets 60% of the surface it was approved for. Write it on the jar spec.

The retest matrix for a jar that narrows

The series' four verdicts — KEEP, CONFIRM, REPEAT, NEW. Compared with the general straight-to-tapered post, this matrix leans harder on the lower band and on the safety lines.

Retest matrix · old jar straight at the new jar's first-burn diameter · new jar narrows toward the base
Top: confirm. Bottom: repeat, with a bracket poured.
Test Verdict Why
Oil–wax compatibility, cure, cold throw KEEP Formula unchanged
Top band: full pool, flame, soot CONFIRM Index 1.00 — the wick's approved condition
Middle band: all lines REPEAT Index falling
Bottom band: pool depth, flame, soot, jar readings REPEAT Index down to 0.60; glass 9.5 mm closer
Burn rate by band NEW Late-life rate may differ from early
Full-life burn REPEAT, every set The risk is at the end
Smaller bracket wick, full life NEW The alternative if the approved wick is too strong late
Hot throw CONFIRM Top and middle bands
Label burn time NEW calculation Sum of band hours

The protocol: bracket down from the start

If you wait for the bottom third to fail before pouring the alternative, you add a whole candle life to the test.

Because the risk sits at the end of the candle's life, a staged test is slow: you would have to burn the approved wick to the bottom, find a problem, then pour and burn a second set all the way down. Pour the bracket at the start instead. In the worked example the approved wick is Eco Thick C2 and the bracket is Eco Thin C1, the two Eco sizes CSI lists; we do not claim either suits this jar or that they are one step apart for your wax. If your wick range has more sizes, bracket with the next size down in that range.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. The "fix" most often suggested for a candle that runs hot near the bottom is a bigger-looking one — a different wick type, a new wax, an additive. None of those is indicated by this geometry. The candle is too strong late because the jar narrows; the choices are a wick chosen for the narrowest pool, a different jar, or a tested end-of-burn line. Only the first involves buying anything from us, and it costs a ₹59.00 pack of wicks.

Decision rule: four options when the bottom runs strong

CSI publishes no numeric flame-height or jar-temperature limits. Approval means every band no worse than the control on every safety line, within your jar supplier's guidance and the fire-safety standard you work to (ASTM F2417 is a commonly cited US one). A wick is never kept too strong for the bottom in exchange for a faster pool or more throw at the top.

Decision rule · narrowing jar
Choosing between the options
Result Option Trade-off
Approved wick no worse than control in every band PASS — keep the wick None; record the three diameters
Approved wick strong late; bracket safe to the end, slower at the top Switch to the bracket Slower full pool on early burns — acceptable only if the ring closes by the middle band
Both wicks strong in the last band only Tested end-of-burn line Your label tells the customer to stop earlier; valid only if proven by your full-life data
Bracket tunnels at the top and approved wick runs hot at the bottom Change the jar The taper is too steep for one wick in this formula
Choose the wick for the narrowest pool it will ever meet, then check it can still open the widest.

Record the jar as three diameters plus depth, the chosen wick, the band results and any end-of-burn instruction, with the date and supplier. The reproducibility-record post shows the format; the change-control form post turns it into a sign-off. For the general jar list see the only-the-jar post.

Diwali is 8 November 2026 and every candle in this test has to burn to the end. If a narrowing festive jar is in your plan, pour the nine candles this week. Send us your rim, middle and base diameters on WhatsApp and we will help you size the kit and the production order; larger quantities are quoted on WhatsApp with no published discount figure.
Plan a narrowing-jar test

If your jar tapers the other way — wider at the base — the risk reverses to tunnelling late in life, and the straight-to-tapered post covers both directions. A narrowing jar with a thick base combines two end-of-life changes; add the last-centimetre sheet from the thicker-base post. For the underlying area maths, the diameter hub is the starting point, and the alternative-container post scores how much taper a candidate jar has before you commit to one.

CSI containers: CSI does not list a tapered jar with published dimensions. The White Matte Glass Jar, 200 ml Salsa Glass Jar and Yankee Glass Jar 130 ml are listed without published internal diameters or fill weights; measure rim, middle and base on a sample. See all glass jars.
Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not jars. This page argues against the purchases people reach for when a candle runs hot near the base — a new wax, an additive, a different wick type — because the geometry points to a smaller wick, a different jar or a tested end-of-burn line.

Wax and oil prices are CSI live pricing, pulled on 24 September 2026; wick and tool prices are those verified for Blog 760 on 10 September 2026, rechecked 25 September 2026. Jar dimensions and the 250 g candle are illustrations; fill height (solved from the frustum volume), pool diameters, area indices, wick-to-glass distances and band weights are plain geometry.

The 8% load, 0.88 g/ml wax factor, 5% allowance, three-candle sets, 3–4 hour cycles, 7-day cure and thirds-based bands are labelled working practices. The symptom list is general candle-making practice, not CSI measurement. CSI does not publish jar dimensions, wick charts, burn results or safety limits. Frequently asked questions

Why does my candle burn hotter as it gets lower in the jar?
One common cause is a jar that narrows toward the base: the same wick meets a smaller pool with the glass closer to the flame. Compare against a control candle by depth band before changing anything.
How do I choose a wick for a tapered candle jar?
Choose it for the narrowest pool it will meet, then check it can still open the widest. In practice that means testing the approved wick and a smaller bracket, both burned to the end.
Can a candle wick be too big for the bottom of the jar?
It can, in a jar that narrows toward the base. The signs commonly described are a deeper pool, taller flame, late soot and warmer lower glass — measured against a control candle.
Should I use a smaller wick in a jar that narrows?
Test one alongside your approved wick from the start. If it is safe to the end and still reaches the wall by the middle band, it is often the better choice for the whole candle.
How do I calculate the melt pool at the bottom of a tapered jar?
Measure the inside diameter just above the base and use π × d² ÷ 4. Divide by the first-burn pool area to see how much the wick's job shrinks.
Can I tell customers to stop burning earlier instead of changing the wick?
Only if your own full-life test shows the candle is well behaved down to that line, and only as an instruction you have proven. The thicker-base post covers end-of-life testing.
Approve it at the narrowest depth
The wick does not shrink. Test it where the pool is smallest, with a smaller bracket beside it, all the way to the end.
