Oud is not automatically the dearer oil: CSI Woody Oud costs ₹11.04 less than Lavender per 200 g candle. When an oud does cost more, a price corridor tells you whether one price can carry it.

Woody Oud cheaper than Lavender per 200 g candle at 8% · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Should my oud and lavender candles have the same selling price? Yes, if both sit inside one price corridor: each candle's cost of goods within a band you set as a share of the price (worked example: 30%–40% of ₹799.00, so ₹239.70 to ₹319.60). No, if the oud pushes its candle above the band; then tier its price or fix its cost. The fragrance gap per candle decides which, not the price per kilo.

Is oud always the more expensive oil? No, so check the premise first. At CSI, Woody Oud is ₹4,531.20 a kilo and Lavender ₹5,221.00: in a 200 g candle at 8% the oud costs ₹72.50 and the lavender ₹83.54. Same price, no question. A premium oud is different: White Royal Oud costs ₹129.65 a candle, ₹46.11 more than lavender; perfume-grade Amber Oud Royal ₹186.24, ₹102.70 more.

What does one price cost me? At ₹799.00 with ₹110.00 of selling costs (worked examples), lavender earns ₹395.64 a candle and a White Royal Oud candle ₹349.53: ₹46.11 less each, ₹22,132.80 a year at 40 oud candles a month. With Amber Oud Royal, ₹102.70 less each.

What would a tier look like? Price that restores lavender's rupee contribution: ₹845.11 for White Royal Oud, ₹901.70 for Amber Oud Royal. As round price points (worked): ₹849.00 brings White Royal Oud back to a 40.0% material ratio; ₹999.00 brings Amber Oud Royal to 39.6%. Test a tier on real customers before you commit; whether to cut the oud's load instead is the next post's question.
The short answer
Rule: one price while every candle's COGS sits inside your corridor (worked: 30%–40% of price). Tier any candle that sits above it, or reduce its cost.
Premise: CSI's Woody Oud (₹4,531.20/kg) is cheaper than CSI's Lavender (₹5,221.00/kg): ₹11.04 less per 200 g candle at 8%.
Premium oud: White Royal Oud adds ₹46.11 a candle (COGS ₹339.47, 42.5% of ₹799.00); Amber Oud Royal adds ₹102.70 (₹396.06, 49.6%).
Tier: worked ₹849.00 for White Royal Oud, ₹999.00 for Amber Oud Royal; at 40 oud candles a month the ₹849.00 tier adds ₹24,000.00 a year if volume holds, and still wins unless you lose more than 5.0 oud sales a month.
One price, four oils: who fits the corridor? COGS of a 200 g candle at 8% (1 kg oil prices, Chunks wax, C2 wick, worked jar and box). Band: 30%–40% of a ₹799.00 price (worked example). CSI live prices, 4 October 2026. corridor ceiling ₹319.60 Woody Oud ₹4,531.20 a kilo ₹282.32 fragrance ₹72.50 · material ratio 35.3% Lavender ₹5,221.00 a kilo ₹293.36 fragrance ₹83.54 · material ratio 36.7% White Royal Oud ₹8,103.00 a kilo ₹339.47 fragrance ₹129.65 · material ratio 42.5% Amber Oud Royal ₹11,640.00 a kilo ₹396.06 fragrance ₹186.24 · material ratio 49.6% 0 200 400 600 800 COGS per candle (₹) wax, wick, jar, box: ₹209.82 fragrance at 8% Inside the band: one price. Above it: tier the price, or fix the cost (6028).
Every bar is the same candle except for the black segment, the fragrance at 8%. Woody Oud and Lavender land inside the shaded corridor at a ₹799.00 price, so they can share it. White Royal Oud and Amber Oud Royal land past the ₹319.60 ceiling: they need their own price, a lower cost, or a decision to accept less. The corridor (30%–40% material ratio), the price, jar and box are worked examples; CSI prices live on 4 October 2026.
Straight answer
My oud fragrance is much more expensive than my lavender. Should both candles have the same selling price?
Only if the oud candle still earns enough at that price, and that depends on rupees per candle, not rupees per kilo. Start by checking the premise: oud fragrance oils are not uniformly expensive. At CSI, Woody Oud costs ₹4,531.20 a kilo and Lavender ₹5,221.00, so a Woody Oud candle is ₹11.04 cheaper than a lavender one, and one price is easy. If your oud is a premium oil, put both candles through the same bill of materials and set a corridor: the range of cost of goods, as a share of the selling price, you are willing to carry on one price. In our worked example (a 200 g candle at 8%, ₹799.00, corridor 30%–40%), lavender sits at 36.7%; White Royal Oud at 42.5% and perfume-grade Amber Oud Royal at 49.6% sit above it. Inside the corridor, keep one price: it is simpler to sell, easier to bundle, and customers choose by scent. Above it, you have three choices: a separate price tier (here ₹849.00 or ₹999.00, worked), a lower cost for that candle, or accepting less on it knowingly as a flagship. Do not let the decision happen by default.
One line: one price while each candle's COGS stays inside your corridor; tier the one that does not, and check whether your "expensive" oud really is.
Pricing an oud against a lavender? Sample both at the same load before you set the price. 100 g covers six 200 g candles at 8%: Woody Oud ₹453.12, Lavender ₹540.00, White Royal Oud ₹810.00. All sizes in stock on 4 October 2026.

Check the premise: which oud, at what price?

"Oud is expensive" is true of agarwood. It is not automatically true of a fragrance oil called oud.

Real oud (agarwood) is famously costly. A candle fragrance oil named oud is a blend whose price is set by its supplier's formulation and positioning; fragrance oils are not essential oils, and CSI does not publish composition. So the word on the label tells you nothing about the price per kilo. Across CSI's oud listings the spread is wide:

CSI oud listings against CSI Lavender · price per kilo and per 200 g candle at 8%
1 kg prices · 16 g per candle · in stock on 4 October 2026 · candle wording as each page states it
Oil 1 kg price Per gram 16 g per candle vs Lavender Candle wording on the page
Woody Oud ₹4,531.20 ₹4.53 ₹72.50 ₹11.04 cheaper "candles (6-10%)"
Lavender ₹5,221.00 ₹5.22 ₹83.54 — "Recommended fragrance load 6-10% for candles"
Midnight Bakhoor Royale ₹7,999.00 ₹8.00 ₹127.98 ₹44.44 dearer no candle load stated in the text we captured
White Royal Oud ₹8,103.00 ₹8.10 ₹129.65 ₹46.11 dearer "Recommended fragrance load 6-10% for candles"
Amber Oud Royal ₹11,640.00 ₹11.64 ₹186.24 ₹102.70 dearer usage table "Candles (Soy/Paraffin/Blends) 10%"

So "my oud is much more expensive than my lavender" is true for some ouds and false for others, even inside one catalogue. Regal Royal Oud is out of stock on 4 October 2026 and is not shown. If your oud is from another supplier, put its price per kilo and the load your test approved into the same columns; the arithmetic is identical. For example, an oud bought at ₹9,000.00 a kilo (worked example) costs ₹144.00 a candle at 8%, takes the candle's COGS to ₹353.82 and its material ratio to 44.3% of ₹799.00. That is a candle for its own tier. The same oud at 6%, if a test approved it, would cost ₹108.00 instead: still well above a lavender at 8%.

Argued against our own interest: if you chose an oud oil because "oud should cost more", and your customers are happy with a woody oud, you may be paying for a story they never see. That is not a reason to switch to our cheapest oud; it is a reason to compare your oud's rupees per candle with your lavender's before you decide the price question exists at all.

Four candles, one bill of materials

Everything is identical except one line. That line decides the price question.

A 200 g candle at 8% (16 g of oil, 184 g of wax; load as a share of total weight), the series default: use your own. Wax and wick are CSI prices; jar and box are your own supplier's figures, labelled as worked examples. Only the fragrance line changes between the four.

Fragrance runs from about a quarter of the candle (Woody Oud) to nearly half (Amber Oud Royal). Everything else is ₹209.82 in every case. That is why "the oud oil is twice the price" does not mean "the oud candle is twice the cost": White Royal Oud's oil costs 1.55 times Lavender's per kilo, but its candle costs 1.16 times as much. The fixed costs dilute the fragrance gap; the question is whether what remains fits your price.

Use your approved loads, not a shared 8%
This table puts every oil at 8% so the price effect is clean. In practice an oud and a lavender may pass at different loads in your burn test; use each candle's own approved load. If the oud passes lower, the gap shrinks; whether to test a lower oud load as a cost lever is the keep-reduce-or-raise oud post. For building every scent's COGS at its own load and pricing a whole range from it, see fragrance-specific COGS and pricing.

Contribution per SKU at one price

One price does not mean one margin. It means the oud quietly earns less.

Contribution is what each candle leaves after its own costs: selling price minus COGS minus the costs of selling it (courier, payment gateway, packing). With one price of ₹799.00 and selling costs of ₹110.00 a candle (both worked examples; use your own), here is what each candle contributes, and what the range earns in a month at labelled volumes:

Contribution per candle at one price · ₹799.00
Price and selling costs: worked examples · volumes: worked example (120 lavender, 40 oud a month) · contribution % of price
Candle COGS Material ratio Contribution % of price vs Lavender
Lavender ₹293.36 36.7% ₹395.64 49.5% —
Woody Oud ₹282.32 35.3% ₹406.68 50.9% ₹11.04 more
White Royal Oud ₹339.47 42.5% ₹349.53 43.7% ₹46.11 less
Amber Oud Royal ₹396.06 49.6% ₹292.94 36.7% ₹102.70 less

Every candle here still makes money at ₹799.00. That is the first honest point: a premium oud at one price is not a loss-maker, just a lower earner. At 120 lavender and 40 White Royal Oud candles a month, lavender contributes ₹47,476.80 and the oud ₹13,981.20, ₹61,458.00 together. Keeping one price costs you ₹1,844.40 a month against pricing the oud to match lavender's contribution, ₹22,132.80 a year. With Amber Oud Royal at one price, ₹49,296.00 a year at the same volume.

Whether that is a problem depends on what the oud does for the range. If it is the candle people come to your stall or page for, and it pulls lavender sales with it, ₹22,132.80 a year may be cheap marketing. If it is one scent among twenty, it is simply margin you are giving away. That is a business judgement, not arithmetic; the arithmetic just tells you its size.

The hidden option: raising everyone's price to carry the oud

There is a fourth way to keep one price that nobody chooses on purpose: lift the whole range's price until the oud earns what you need, and let lavender buyers pay for it. Spread over 120 lavender candles, the ₹1,844.40 a month the White Royal Oud gives up at one price is ₹15.37 per lavender candle. That can be a perfectly good decision if lavender sells on scent and the oud is the reason people visit. It is a poor one if lavender is your price-sensitive entry candle. Either way, write the number down: it is what one price really costs your best-selling scent.

Check the pack you buy before you price

The corridor should use the per-gram price of the pack you really reorder. For White Royal Oud it barely matters: 16 g costs ₹129.60 from a 100 g bottle against ₹129.65 from a kilo. For Amber Oud Royal it matters a lot: ₹207.84 from 100 g against ₹186.24 from 1 kg, a ₹21.60 difference that moves its material ratio by several points. But a kilo of a slow-selling perfume-grade oil ties up ₹11,640.00 of cash; whether that is worth it is the slow-selling fragrance post's question, not a pricing one.

Mistake: setting one range price from the lavender candle's cost and never re-checking it as you add scents. Why it fails: each premium scent you add drags the range's average contribution down without anyone deciding it should. Fix: compute contribution per SKU every time you add an oil or a price changes, and check it against the corridor below. If a whole range is creeping, start from the fragrance cost hub.

The price corridor rule

Pick a band once. Then every new scent either fits it or earns its own price.

A price corridor is a band of material ratio (COGS as a share of selling price) within which candles can share one price. Set its ceiling from the margin you need after selling costs and overheads; set its floor so you notice a candle that may be under-specified for its price. In our worked example the band is 30%–40%, which at ₹799.00 means COGS between ₹239.70 and ₹319.60. The numbers are a worked example: a maker with higher selling costs needs a lower ceiling.

1
Fix the shared price and the corridorChoose the price you want for the range (₹799.00 here) and the band of material ratio you accept on it (30%–40% here, worked example). Write the band in rupees: ₹239.70 to ₹319.60.
2
Cost every scent at its own approved loadSame jar, wax, wick and box; each oil at the load its burn test passed, priced at the pack you actually buy. Do not use a shared load unless your tests really gave one.
3
Place each candle against the bandInside: one price. Below the floor: check that the candle is not under-scented or under-specified for the price. Above the ceiling: it needs a decision.
4
For each candle above the ceiling, pick one of threeA separate price tier; a lower cost for that candle (load test, pack size, a different oil, all tested); or a knowing decision to carry it as a flagship below the corridor, with a review date.
5
Re-check on every changeA price rise on one oil, a new pack size or a new approved load moves that candle; re-place it against the band before the next production run.

Applied here: Woody Oud (35.3%) and Lavender (36.7%) sit inside, so they share ₹799.00. White Royal Oud (42.5%) is just above the ceiling: it needs ₹848.68 to sit exactly on it, which is why ₹849.00 is the natural tier. Amber Oud Royal (49.6%) is well above: it needs ₹990.15, which points to ₹999.00. A corridor turns "should they cost the same?" into a rule that answers the same way for the next twenty scents.

If you tier: setting and testing the oud price

A tier is a promise that the dearer candle is worth more. Make sure it visibly is.

Two prices in one range work when the customer can see why. An oud in a heavier jar, with a different label colour or a "reserve" name, reads as a step up; the same jar at a higher price for a scent alone is harder to sell. Keep everything else identical and the fragrance has to carry the price on its own. A single price, by contrast, is simpler for gift sets, bundles and corporate orders, where buyers want one number.

Tiering also has a cost if it loses sales. At 40 oud candles a month, moving White Royal Oud from ₹799.00 to ₹849.00 adds ₹24,000.00 a year if volume holds. The tier still earns more than one price unless you lose more than about 5.0 oud candles a month. That is the threshold to watch in a test; modelling how price changes sales (elasticity) and the case for carrying an oud below margin as a flagship belong to the oud flagship post.

A four-week tier test · worked example
Run on one channel, compare with the previous four weeks or a channel kept at one price · volumes are yours
What to track Why Decision
Oud units a month at ₹849.00 the volume the tier must keep keep the tier if the loss is under about 5.0 a month
Lavender units a month whether the range sells differently with two prices if lavender drops, the tier is costing more than it shows
Bundles and gift orders mixed-scent orders are where two prices cause friction consider a bundle price that averages the two
Returns and complaints on the oud a higher price raises expectations of throw re-check throw before blaming the price
Argued against our own interest, again: the cheapest fix for an oud that does not fit the corridor is sometimes to change nothing in your supplies at all and simply price it properly. We would rather you sell an ₹849.00 White Royal Oud candle you are proud of than swap to our cheaper Woody Oud to squeeze it into ₹799.00. If you do consider swapping the oil, that is a scent change: a full retest of throw, wick and colour (whether a fragrance change needs a new burn test, what to retest), not a pricing decision.

The four oils in the comparison

The four CSI oils used in the tables, chosen on page statements, prices and stock on 4 October 2026; each is in stock in every size listed. CSI publishes no throw or burn data, so nothing is ranked on performance. Per-candle figures use 16 g, a 200 g candle at 8%.

Woody Oud Fragrance Oil
The premise check. At ₹4,531.20 a kilo, Woody Oud is ₹689.80 a kilo cheaper than CSI's Lavender and the cheapest in-stock 1 kg oud listing CSI has. The page describes "citrus and spice top notes opening into rich oud and patchouli heart, settling into warm woody notes, amber, and musk" and states "candles (6-10%)". It is ₹4.53 a gram from 100 g to 1 kg. Limitation: it is a woody, patchouli-led oud, not a perfume-grade one; if your customers buy your oud for a richer profile, this is a different candle, not a cheaper version of the same one.

Its 50 g and 100 g are both ₹5.40 a gram, and the 1 kg only reaches ₹5.22, so its per-candle cost moves little with pack size. Note: it is not a cheap oil on CSI's list; a reader whose lavender costs much less than their oud may be buying a cheaper lavender elsewhere, which is fine: plug your own price into the corridor.

The CSI principle
One price is a choice you make per candle, not a default for the range.
Cost each scent in rupees per candle, place it against your corridor, and give any candle above it its own price, a lower cost, or a deliberate flagship role.
"Price per kilo starts the argument. Rupees per candle, against the price you charge, ends it."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the four oils compared here and does not sell finished candles. This page still says our perfume-grade oud does not belong in a candle priced like a lavender, that pricing a premium oud properly can beat switching to our cheaper oud, and that the 1 kg of White Royal Oud saves almost nothing per gram.

Every CSI price was checked on the live store on 4 October 2026. All four oils are in stock in every size shown; Regal Royal Oud is out of stock on that date and is not offered. Product wording is quoted from the pages; where a page is silent in the text we captured, we say so.

The ₹799.00 selling price, ₹110.00 selling costs, the 30%–40% corridor, the tier prices, the jar (₹70.00) and box (₹20.00), and 120 lavender and 40 oud candles a month are labelled worked examples; the 8% load is used for every oil so the price effect is clean, and your own approved loads replace it. This is practical business judgement, not financial advice. For bulk pricing, GST invoicing, and MSDS and IFRA documentation on request, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Only while each candle's cost of goods sits inside a band you set as a share of the price (worked example: 30%–40%). A scent whose oil pushes its COGS above the band needs its own price, a lower cost, or a deliberate decision to earn less on it.
Is oud fragrance oil more expensive than lavender?
Not always. At CSI, Woody Oud is ₹4,531.20 a kilo and Lavender ₹5,221.00; premium ouds such as White Royal Oud (₹8,103.00) and perfume-grade Amber Oud Royal (₹11,640.00) cost more.
How much more does an oud candle cost to make than a lavender candle?
In a 200 g candle at 8%, CSI White Royal Oud adds ₹46.11 of oil over Lavender, and Amber Oud Royal ₹102.70. Woody Oud costs ₹11.04 less.
What is a price corridor for a candle range?
A band of material ratio within which candles share one price. At ₹799.00 with a 30%–40% band (worked example), any candle costing ₹239.70 to ₹319.60 fits; one above ₹319.60 needs a decision.
Should I charge more for oud candles?
If the oud candle sits above your corridor, a tier often makes sense. Worked: White Royal Oud at ₹849.00 instead of ₹799.00 adds ₹24,000.00 a year at 40 candles a month if volume holds.
Does one price for all scents lose money?
Not necessarily; usually it earns less on the dearer scents. In the worked example a White Royal Oud candle at ₹799.00 contributes ₹349.53 against lavender's ₹395.64.
Oud and lavender, one price or two
Cost each candle in rupees, place it against your corridor, and price the one that does not fit.
If your oud is a woody one, it may already be cheaper than your lavender. If it is premium, a tier often beats squeezing it into one price. Send us both oils' prices and your selling price on WhatsApp and we will run the corridor with you.
