One Soy Wax Requires More Expensive Wicks to Burn Properly — Should Wick Cost Be Included When Comparing Wax Suppliers?
Aktie
How big is the wick budget? Wax grams × price gap. CSI 464 vs CSI 468 at 5 kg: 184 g × ₹0.1296 = ₹23.85 per 200 g candle.
Which wicks fit inside it? Eco Thick C2 (+₹3.54) and Cotton Braided (+₹6.10) over Eco Thin C1. Performance Wooden Wicks (+₹35.40 to +₹53.10) do not.
How do I know which wick each wax needs? A full-life wick bracket in the cheaper wax against the dearer wax as control. CSI publishes no wick charts. See the test.
Yes — the wick is a line in the candle's cost, and it can flip the decision
When you compare wax suppliers on price per kilo, you compare one ingredient. When you compare them on cost per candle, every ingredient whose quantity or price depends on the wax has to come along — and the wick is one of them. If one wax burns properly only with a dearer wick, that wick's extra cost belongs to the wax, exactly as extra fragrance would. Leave it out and the cheaper wax looks cheaper than it is.
The size of the effect surprises people. Take two real CSI waxes at their 5 kg rates: Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 at ₹507.40 a kilo and Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 at ₹637.00. In a 200 g candle at 8% (184 g of wax), CSI 464 is ₹23.85 cheaper. That is the budget the cheaper wax has for a dearer wick. An Eco Thick C2 wick at ₹9.44 uses ₹3.54 of it; a Cotton Braided Ready Made wick at ₹12.00 uses ₹6.10. A Performance Wooden Wick at ₹41.30 to ₹59.00 each uses all of it and more — so if your burn test said the cheaper wax only worked with a wooden wick, the dearer wax would make the cheaper candle.
Two honest limits. First, no one can tell you from a data sheet which wick either wax needs in your jar with your oil: CSI publishes no wick-size charts and no burn data, and no CSI wick is claimed here as a size step from another. The scenarios below are "if your burn test shows…" cases, not predictions. Second, the wick choice is decided by safe, complete burning first and cost second. A cheaper wick that tunnels or a dearer one that overheats the jar is not a cost option at all.
The wick budget: how much dearer a wick can be
The quickest test is to compare the wick premium — what the wick the cheaper wax needs costs above the wick the dearer wax needs — with the wax gap per candle. If the premium is smaller, the cheaper wax still wins. The table runs every CSI wick option against CSI 464 vs CSI 468, for a single-wick 200 g candle and an illustrative 400 g double-wick candle. CSI does not list double-wick jars; the 400 g size is illustrative and the wick maths holds for any jar.
| Wick | Pack basis | Per wick | Premium, 1 wick | 200 g single (gap ₹23.85) | Premium, 2 wicks | 400 g double (gap ₹47.69) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eco Thin C1 | any pack (10 → 1,000) | ₹5.90 | ₹0.00 | CSI 464 still cheaper | ₹0.00 | CSI 464 still cheaper |
| Eco Thick C2 | any pack (10 → 1,000) | ₹9.44 | ₹3.54 | CSI 464 still cheaper | ₹7.08 | CSI 464 still cheaper |
| Cotton Braided Ready Made | any pack (10 → 1,000) | ₹12.00 | ₹6.10 | CSI 464 still cheaper | ₹12.20 | CSI 464 still cheaper |
| Performance Wooden | 100-pack ₹4,130.00 | ₹41.30 | ₹35.40 | CSI 468 cheaper | ₹70.80 | CSI 468 cheaper |
| Performance Wooden | 50-pack ₹2,360.00 | ₹47.20 | ₹41.30 | CSI 468 cheaper | ₹82.60 | CSI 468 cheaper |
| Performance Wooden | 10-pack ₹590.00 | ₹59.00 | ₹53.10 | CSI 468 cheaper | ₹106.20 | CSI 468 cheaper |
Three things stand out. Eco wicks and Cotton Braided cost the same per wick at every pack size — ₹5.90, ₹9.44 and ₹12.00 — so their premium does not shrink as you buy more. Performance Wooden Wicks do have a real pack break: ₹59.00 each in tens, ₹47.20 in fifties and ₹41.30 in hundreds, a 30% drop. And in a double-wick candle the wick premium doubles while the wax gap only doubles with the wax weight, so the comparison stays proportional — but the rupees involved are twice as large. At 1 kg bag prices the wax gap is bigger (₹26.24 per 200 g candle, because CSI 464 is ₹507.40 at 1 kg and CSI 468 is ₹650.00), which gives the cheaper wax slightly more room.
The full candle, wick by wick
Here is the whole material cost of a 200 g candle with Sandalwood Fragrance Oil at its 1 kg rate (₹5.03 a gram) and a White Matte Glass Jar (₹70.80), for CSI 464 with each wick, against CSI 468 with an Eco Thin C1 at ₹274.34. Excludes labour, packaging, freight and GST.
| Candle | Wax | Oil | Wick | Material | vs CSI 468 + Thin (₹274.34) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| CSI 464 + Eco Thin C1 | ₹93.36 | ₹80.43 | ₹5.90 | ₹250.49 | −₹23.85 |
| CSI 464 + Eco Thick C2 | ₹93.36 | ₹80.43 | ₹9.44 | ₹254.03 | −₹20.31 |
| CSI 464 + Cotton Braided Ready Made | ₹93.36 | ₹80.43 | ₹12.00 | ₹256.59 | −₹17.75 |
| CSI 464 + Performance Wooden (100-pack) | ₹93.36 | ₹80.43 | ₹41.30 | ₹285.89 | +₹11.55 |
| CSI 464 + Performance Wooden (50-pack) | ₹93.36 | ₹80.43 | ₹47.20 | ₹291.79 | +₹17.45 |
| CSI 464 + Performance Wooden (10-pack) | ₹93.36 | ₹80.43 | ₹59.00 | ₹303.59 | +₹29.25 |
With an Eco or Cotton wick, CSI 464 stays the cheaper candle by ₹17.75 to ₹23.85. With wooden wicks at any pack size it becomes the dearer candle. That is the whole decision on one line — and it depends entirely on what your burn test says each wax needs. The cost-per-saleable-candle hub has the method, and comparing at each wax's optimal load adds the fragrance line when the waxes need different loads as well as different wicks.
What the wick decision is worth in a month
Per-candle differences look small; a month makes them visible. In an example 500-candle month of the Sandalwood 200 g candle, the material bill for each CSI 464 wick option, and its difference from CSI 468 with Eco Thin, is:
| Wax + wick | Month's material | vs CSI 468 + Eco Thin |
|---|---|---|
| CSI 464 + Eco Thin C1 | ₹1,25,245.20 | saves ₹11,923.20 |
| CSI 464 + Eco Thick C2 | ₹1,27,015.20 | saves ₹10,153.20 |
| CSI 464 + Cotton Braided Ready Made | ₹1,28,295.20 | saves ₹8,873.20 |
| CSI 464 + Performance Wooden (100-pack) | ₹1,42,945.20 | costs ₹5,776.80 more |
| CSI 468 + Eco Thin C1 | ₹1,37,168.40 | — |
Wick prices are only half the wick cost. The other half is development: every time a wax needs a different wick, every fragrance in your range may need its own wick bracket before it can be sold. If one wax needs repeated bracketing and the other does not, that is a real cost of the first wax, paid in test candles and weeks. It belongs on the same sheet, as a one-off cost spread over the candles you expect to sell. When multiple wick tests per fragrance should influence your wax works that out properly.
Finding out which wick each wax actually needs
The test is a small wick bracket in the cheaper wax, against the dearer wax with its approved wick as control. It answers: does CSI 464 burn as well as CSI 468 with the same cheap wick, and if not, which dearer wick does it need? The wicks in the bracket are chosen as different constructions to compare, not as size steps — CSI publishes no sizing chart and claims no equivalence between its wicks.

The decision rule, ending in a purchase
| Cheapest passing wick in CSI 464 | Candle vs CSI 468 + Thin | What you buy |
|---|---|---|
| Eco Thin C1 | CSI 464 cheaper by ₹23.85 | CSI 464 5 kg ₹2,537.00 + Eco Thin C1 100-pack ₹590.00 |
| Eco Thick C2 | CSI 464 cheaper by ₹20.31 | CSI 464 5 kg + Eco Thick C2 100-pack ₹944.00 |
| Cotton Braided | CSI 464 cheaper by ₹17.75 | CSI 464 5 kg + Cotton Braided 100-pack ₹1,200.00 |
| Only wooden passes | CSI 464 dearer by ₹11.55 even at 100-pack wicks | CSI 468 5 kg ₹3,185.00 + Eco Thin C1 |
| Nothing passes | Not a cost question | Stay on CSI 468; ask CSI on WhatsApp |
With the example result — CSI 464 tunnelling slightly with Eco Thin but passing with Cotton Braided — the purchase is Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 in 5 kg bags (₹2,537.00) and Cotton Braided Wicks in a 100-pack (₹1,200.00). The candle costs ₹256.59 against ₹274.34, and in a 500-candle month that is ₹8,873.20 saved even after the dearer wick. If only wooden wicks pass, stay with CSI 468 — the wick would cost more than the wax saves.
Comparing suppliers, not just waxes
Your question says "wax suppliers", and the wick line matters even more there. Different suppliers' waxes may need different wicks, and a supplier who sells wax but not your wick adds a second purchase, a second freight charge and a second stock line. Keep the comparison at cost per saleable candle and every one of those differences has a place to go: the wick price in the wick line, the extra freight in a landed cost per candle, the extra bracket tests as a one-off development cost. Landed cost per kilo across suppliers and the true commercial cost of a soy wax build that sheet.
Finally, keep the wick decision tied to the wax lot that proved it. If the wax supplier changes, or the same supplier changes the product, the wick result goes back to REPEAT, not KEEP. Why an identical-looking wax still needs wick testing explains why.
The wick line sits beside the others in the cluster. A cheaper wax that needs a dearer wick may also need more fragrance — total formulation cost handles that — or a different load for the same throw, which the throw-value post prices. If the dearer wick also changes how many candles you scrap, the rejects post folds that in, and the lowest-cost-per-saleable-candle comparison adds every line together.
CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. We sell every wax and wick on this page, including the dearest. The arithmetic shows that a cheap wax needing wooden wicks is the expensive choice, and we say so. We publish no wick-size charts or burn data, so the wick each wax needs is your bracket's result.
