Should I Purchase a 100 g Fragrance Sample and Conduct Ageing Tests in Wax Before Committing to a 5 Kg Wholesale Order?
Aktie
How many test candles does 100 g make? In a 150 g jar at 8% you need 12 g of oil per candle, so 100 g makes eight candles (96 g) with 4 g left to retain.
How long should I age them? Your choice. A suggested starting plan: check at day 3, 14, 30, 60 and 90 after pouring, then decide. The 5 kg order should not exceed the period you have tested.
Will an accelerated heat test tell me the shelf life? No. Warm-cabinet ageing helps you compare options quickly; it never converts into an exact shelf life. Pair it with real-time ageing.
Is the sample worth it?
Put the two prices side by side. A 100 g pack of Lavender is ₹540.00. Five kilograms, bought as five 1 kg packs because no larger pack is listed, is 5 × ₹5,221.00 = ₹26,105.00. The sample is 2.07% of the order: ₹540.00 ÷ ₹26,105.00 = 0.0207.
Two per cent of the spend buys you the one thing the product page cannot give you: evidence of how this oil behaves in your wax, in your jars, in your storage, over time. The page gives a load range of 6–10%, a "Strong" rating (its own rating) and the note structure. It publishes no shelf life, no storage temperature and no ageing data. That gap is what the sample fills.
The sample is not worth it if all you do is open it, smell it and order. Bottle smell tells you whether you like the oil. It tells you nothing about month three.
What to buy for the test
Keep the test small and complete. You need the oil, a wax you already use, lidded jars that match your product as closely as possible, wicks and a thermometer.
| Item | Pack | Price | Used for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lavender fragrance oil | 100 g | ₹540.00 | Eight test candles plus a retained bottle sample |
| CSI 464 soy wax | 1 kg | ₹507.40 | 8 × 138 g = 1,104 g needed, so buy 2 × 1 kg or a 5 kg pack if you also want a fresh reference pour |
| Clear jar with golden lid, 150 g | 10 | ₹944.00 | Eight test candles plus two unscented controls |
| Eco Candle Wick Thin (C1) | 20 | ₹118.00 | Your starting wick; size it to your jar first |
| Pen thermometer | 1 | ₹354.00 | Pour and fragrance-addition temperatures |
At 8% of total candle weight, a 150 g candle is 138 g wax plus 12 g oil. Eight candles use 8 × 12 g = 96 g of oil, leaving 4 g in the bottle as a retained sample — tiny, but enough to sniff on a blotter against the 5 kg delivery later. Eight candles use 8 × 138 g = 1,104 g of wax, which is just over a 1 kg pack, so plan for 2 × ₹507.40 = ₹1,014.80 of CSI 464.
If your real product is a 200 g candle, keep the same 8% and accept fewer test candles: 100 g ÷ 16 g = 6 candles. Matching your real jar matters more than having more candles.
Design the ageing test
The test has to answer one question: how does a Lavender candle made today compare with one made fresh on the check day? That needs coded samples, fixed check days and a fresh reference.
The fresh reference is the step most makers skip, and it is the one that removes memory from the judgement. You are not comparing the aged candle with how you remember it smelling in week one. You are comparing it with a new one, side by side.
Should you add a warm-cabinet test?
You can, to see weaknesses sooner. Hold two of the coded candles in a controlled warm room or cabinet with a thermometer — for example 35°C for seven days, a suggested condition you choose, not a standard — and compare them with candles kept at room temperature.
What a warm test gives you is a ranking. If you are choosing between Lavender and another oil, the one that changes more under warmth is the one to watch. What it does not give you is a shelf life. Seven days warm is not "equal to" any number of months on a shelf, so never write a shelf life from it. Keep it supervised, and never use a kitchen oven, a car boot or anywhere near a flame.
Reading the results and sizing the order
Record each check in one line per candle. A simple log keeps the decision honest.
| Check day | Cold throw lid-off (1–5) | Hot throw vs fresh reference | Wax colour | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Day 3 | your score | first burn | your note | baseline |
| Day 14 | your score | — | your note | top note still clear? |
| Day 30 | your score | — | your note | any flattening? |
| Day 60 | your score | burn aged vs fresh | your note | difference noticeable? |
| Day 90 | your score | burn aged vs fresh | your note | pass or fail |
The pass rule is yours to set before you start, so you cannot move it later. One suggestion: an aged candle passes if, burned beside a fresh reference, two people cannot reliably tell them apart or prefer the aged one no less often.
Then size the order. Say your aged candles pass at day 90 and you use 1.5 kg of Lavender a month (your figure). Three months of use is 3 × 1.5 kg = 4.5 kg, so a 5 kg order sits right at the edge of what you have tested. If you use 0.8 kg a month, 5 kg is over six months of stock, and your test stopped at three. In that case buy three packs now and keep the test running; buy the rest once month six has passed.
Before you place the 5 kg order
Ask on WhatsApp (+91 7397976926) for the IFRA certificate, the MSDS and any storage or shelf-life guidance for the oil and lot you will receive, and ask whether the 5 kg will come from the same lot as your sample. If it will not, smell the delivery against your retained 4 g and make one test candle before releasing it to production.
The sample did its job if you can answer "how long have I tested this?" with a number. If you cannot, the 5 kg order is early.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials and production equipment, not finished candles. This guide separates general fragrance-ageing practice from what CSI's own product pages state, says plainly that CSI's oil pages publish no shelf life, storage temperature or ageing data, treats the 60-month shelf life on the CSI 464 and 468 pages as a wax statement only, and labels every test day, cabinet temperature, candle count, reject rate or lead time as a starting point or the reader's own figure.
Prices are live CSI prices from October 2026; product pages are authoritative. No fragrance-oil pack above 1 kg is listed, so larger quantities are shown as multiples of the 1 kg price; ask for a quote rather than assuming a discount.

Assumptions: Fragrance load is a percentage of total candle weight (200 g = 184 g wax + 16 g oil at 8%). CSI fragrance-oil pages publish no shelf life, storage temperature or ageing data; the 60-month shelf life on the CSI 464 and 468 pages refers to the wax. Accelerated heat or cycling tests compare options and do not predict an exact shelf life. Every test day, temperature, candle count, reject rate, lead time and cost of money is a suggested starting point or the reader's own figure.
