What does a 6% fragrance load actually mean? Six grams of oil in every 100 g of finished candle — so a 200 g candle is 12 g of oil and 188 g of wax, a 120 g jar 7.2 g and 112.8 g, a 70 g votive 4.2 g and 65.8 g. Against the wax instead, 63.83 g of oil per kilogram.

Is 6% a low load or a normal one? Both, depending on which page you read. It is the bottom of the band on the 20 CSI oil pages stating "6-10%" for candles and the ceiling on the 14 stating "Up to 6% for paraffin wax" — 33 of the 107 oil pages name 6% somewhere.

Which CSI waxes allow 6%? Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states "Fragrance Load Up to 10%" and CSI 468 "Up to 13%", so 6% sits inside both. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks words its range as "8% to 13%", putting 6% below its published band, and Eco Soy CSI 400 publishes no load at all.

What does 6% cost per candle? Between ₹34.69 and ₹79.86 of oil in a 200 g candle across the eight oils priced below. Against 8%, 6% saves ₹1,024.24 per hundred candles on Eucalyptus Spearmint once the extra 400 g of wax is paid for.
The short answer
6% is a weight, not a strength setting: 12 g of oil into 188 g of wax makes a 200 g candle. Weigh both on the same scale; a load you estimated is not a load you can repeat.
Check that wax and oil both publish room for it: an "up to 10%" wax accepts 6% without argument, but a page whose range starts at 8% does not put 6% on the table — and a few oil pages name 8% as their own starting figure.
Choose 6% deliberately — bright volatile accords, small vessels, small rooms — then prove it with six jars against 8%, cured together and scored blind. On paraffin, treat 6% as the ceiling the oil pages state, not a starting point.

Every bar is one 200 g candle at the same scale: the outlined block is oil, the solid block wax. The whole 6%-to-10% argument is the 8 g between the first sliver and the third — and at 6% that sliver is 12 g, or ₹36.82 of Eucalyptus Spearmint at ₹3,068 a kilogram.

What does a 6% fragrance load mean, in grams, in rupees, and in which waxes?
A 6% fragrance load means six grams of oil in every hundred grams of finished candle: 12 g of oil and 188 g of wax in a 200 g candle, 7.2 g and 112.8 g in a 120 g jar, 4.2 g and 65.8 g in a 70 g votive. Against the wax instead it is 63.83 g of oil per kilogram, because the wax is 94% of the candle — both conventions are unpicked in how to calculate fragrance load for candles. Six per cent is the bottom of the band on the 20 CSI oil pages that state "6-10%" for candles, and the ceiling on the 14 that state "Up to 6% for paraffin wax". Your wax has to allow it too: Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states "Fragrance Load Up to 10%" and CSI 468 states "Up to 13%", so 6% sits comfortably inside both; Luxury Soy Wax Chunks words its range as "8% to 13% of total wax weight", which places 6% below its published band; Eco Soy CSI 400 publishes no load figure at all. In money, 12 g of Eucalyptus Spearmint is ₹36.82 against ₹49.09 at 8% — a net ₹1,024.24 across a hundred candles after the extra wax. Whether 6% is enough is a question about your oil, your vessel and your cure, and six jars will answer it.
One line: 6% is 12 g of oil in a 200 g candle, it is the floor of most CSI oil bands and the stated ceiling on paraffin, and it is worth testing before you pay for 8%.

What 6% is, and what it is 6% of

Nobody pours a percentage into a jar. They pour twelve grams — and the only question worth arguing about is twelve grams of what.

Throughout this series, and in CSI's guide to making candles smell strong without exceeding the safe fragrance load, load is a share of the finished candle: a 200 g candle at 6% weighs 200 g on the label and holds 12 g of oil and 188 g of wax. That is the convention for your recipe card, because it is the weight the customer holds and the weight your costing uses.

Some pages phrase the same idea as a share of wax weight — the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page says "8% to 13% of total wax weight". The gap is small but real: 6% of 188 g of wax is 11.28 g, which is 5.66% of the resulting 199.28 g candle. To land on a true 6% of the finished candle from a wax weight, use oil = wax × 6 ÷ 94 — 63.83 g per kilogram of wax. Pick one basis and never mix the two inside a batch.

The two bottle columns change a shopping list. At 6% a single 100 g bottle scents eight 200 g candles, thirteen 120 g jars or twenty-three votives — two or three more per bottle than at 8%. A hundred 200 g candles need 1,200 g of oil instead of 1,600 g.

The six-gram mistake. Plenty of first batches are poured at 3%, not 6%, because "6%" gets read as "six grams" and six grams goes into a 200 g candle. Half the intended oil — and the maker blames the oil. One line prevents it: candle weight × 0.06. Write the pair of numbers, oil and wax, on the recipe card for every vessel you pour.
6% asks more of your scale than 10% does
A 120 g jar at 6% needs 7.2 g of oil. On a scale reading whole grams, 7 g is a 5.83% load and 8 g is 6.67% — nearly a percentage point from one rounding, and proportionally worse than the same rounding at 10%. A Candle Making Weighing Scale at ₹354 settles it once.

Which waxes put 6% on the table

A load is only available if your wax page and your oil page both reach it. Most load talk is about ceilings, because that is where the risk of an unstable candle sits; 6% raises the opposite question, because a published range has a bottom as well as a top. These are formulation figures from the maker of each material, not regulatory limits, and CSI never recommends pouring above the lower of the two.

"Below the range" is not the same as "above the ceiling". Going over a stated maximum risks oil the wax cannot hold — separation, sweating, a wick fighting a flooded pool. Going under a stated minimum risks nothing physical; what you lose is the page's backing. If you pour Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at 6% when its page recommends 8% to 13%, and the candle reads thin, you cannot tell whether the load or something else caused it, because you are outside the band the wax was characterised in. Either move to a wax whose page states a ceiling rather than a range, or keep 6% and treat every result as yours alone.

The two errors also cost different amounts. An over-ceiling batch can be unsellable — the failure modes are in what happens if you put too much fragrance oil in a candle. An under-band batch is usually sellable and merely disappointing: a far cheaper mistake, and an easier one to test your way out of.

The oils whose pages invite 6%

The wax tells you what it can hold. The oil tells you what it was blended for. On 6% the oil usually has the more interesting answer.

Of CSI's 107 fragrance-oil pages, 33 name 6%, in two opposite ways: 20 state a candle range of "6-10%", making 6% the deliberate low end, and 14 pair "Up to 10% for soy wax" with "Up to 6% for paraffin wax", making it a ceiling for one wax family. Another 26 — mostly perfume-grade listings — state "Recommended load - candles 7-10% (start at 7%)", putting 6% below their own starting figure, and 26 state no candle percentage at all.

Read the last two rows together. Lemongrass and Lime states "6-10% for candles", so 6% is explicitly on offer. Zesty Lemon is also a bright citrus, but its page names 8% as the figure to start at and declines to publish a flash point, pointing to the SDS instead. Same scent family, different answers — which is why the load conversation starts on the product page. Jasmine is the other kind of candidate for a low load: an indolic floral at ₹3,923 a kilogram, stated "Up to 10% for soy wax" with "Flashpoint 185°C" and 0% vanillin, where the 10% jar often gets called heavy and the 6% jar expensive.

Flash point is not a load figure — and only 18 CSI pages publish one
Of the 107 oil pages, 18 state a measured flash point, 32 print only the shared template line "Flash point > 93°C (suitable for alcohol-based products)" — a threshold for alcohol-based products, not a measurement of that oil — and 56 state nothing. A flash point says nothing about how much oil to use; it belongs to the question of when you add it, which for soy is the wax page's stated 80–90°C band. No published figure? Ask CSI for the SDS on WhatsApp rather than assuming one.

Eucalyptus Spearmint Fragrance Oil
The cleanest oil to test a low load on, because its page publishes every figure you need: "Up to 10% for soy wax candles" and "up to 6% for paraffin wax candles", a measured "Flashpoint 199°C", and "Vanillin Content 0%" with "Zero discoloration risk - safe in white, light, and uncoloured wax". The stated profile is "Crisp eucalyptus with a refreshing spearmint finish", the eucalyptus "Sharp, clean, and immediately clarifying" — the family where a low load is most often sufficient. At ₹3,068 a kilogram the 6% arm costs ₹36.82 per 200 g candle against ₹49.09 at 8%.

What 6% costs, and what it saves

Dropping from 8% to 6% removes 4 g of oil from a 200 g candle and adds 4 g of wax back, so the saving is never the full price of the oil you skipped. On CSI 464 at ₹507.40 a kilogram those 4 g of wax cost ₹2.03 a candle, ₹202.96 per hundred. All figures are CSI live pricing, September 2026, at 1 kg oil pricing.

Worked out above: oil per candle = 1 kg price ÷ 1,000 × 12 g; for 100 candles, × 100 (1,200 g). Two conclusions, pointing opposite ways. On a cheap oil the decision barely matters: Citronella's whole 6%-versus-8% question is worth ₹953.44 per hundred candles — less than the ₹1,392.40 of materials the test consumes. On a dear oil it is the margin: on Neroli, ₹2,459.12 per hundred, or ₹88,528.32 a year at 300 candles a month, resting on four grams your customer may not detect. The test costs the same either way while the saving scales.

Cost the difference at your real volume before you decide
Multiply the per-candle gap — 4 g × your oil's price per gram, less ₹2.03 of wax — by your monthly candle count and write the annual figure on the recipe card next to the load. At 200 candles a month on a ₹5,000-a-kilogram oil that is ₹17.97 a candle, ₹3,594 a month, ₹43,128 a year. That number, not the percentage, justifies the six jars below.

Vessel, room and scent family: when 6% is the right engineering choice

A load is not a measure of ambition. It is a match between how much scented wax you will melt at once and how much air you are trying to reach.

What a lit candle releases is governed by its melt pool, and pool area grows with the square of the diameter. The Amber Shiny Glass Jar with Black Lid states a 120 gm fill and 6 cm diameter — about 28.3 cm² of surface, against 38.5 cm² for a 7 cm jar, over a third more. A small jar in a small room does far less work than a wide three-wick vessel in an open-plan room, and one load does not fit both.

One more reason a 6% candle reads as adequate: you stop noticing your own candle. Perception of a constant smell falls away within minutes, which is why judging from the sofa produces a verdict of "weak" and a reach for more oil. Leave the room for ten minutes and come back before writing anything down — see why more fragrance oil doesn't always mean stronger candles.

The mistake: blaming the load for a cure problem. A 6% candle judged at 48 hours is almost always called weak, and the next batch gets double the oil. Soy containers are conventionally given 14 to 21 days, and the Chunks page asks for "a minimum of 48 hours (ideally 1-2 weeks) before performing burn tests". Raise the load on day two and you have bought a permanent cost increase to fix a temporary problem — see why your candle needs a 14-day cure and, for light citrus, why citrus fragrances fade in candles.

Proving 6% is enough: the six-jar restraint test

This is narrower than a three-load comparison, and that is the point: one question — can anyone tell my 6% candle from my 8% candle? — on one oil, one wax, one vessel. Six jars, one wick size, one melt temperature, one cure window. If the answer is no, the cheaper load is the better load and you can say why.

One variable, or the test is worthless. The temptation is to change the wick on the 6% jars "because there is less oil to carry". Do not: a test with two variables cannot tell you which one moved the result. Settle the wick at one load first — see wrong wick size is killing your hot throw — then run this comparison, then re-check the wick at whichever load won. CSI publishes no burn-test results of its own; this is a protocol, and its numbers belong to your workshop.
The CSI principle
Six per cent is a choice, not a shortage. The only load you can defend is the one you weighed, cured and scored.
Read the band on the wax page and the band on the oil page, take the lower ceiling, then work upwards from the bottom rather than down from the maximum. Makers who start at the ceiling never find out that they were paying for four grams nobody could smell.
At 6% a 100 g bottle covers eight 200 g candles or thirteen 120 g jars; a 500 g bottle covers 41 and 69. How much oil to buy at 6%

A low load changes the shopping list: each candle uses less oil, so the bottle you had in mind covers a longer run. Work from the candle count, then add a planning allowance.

The arithmetic is one line: oil = candle weight × 0.06 × number of candles. A hundred 200 g candles need 1,200 g of oil and 18,800 g of wax; two hundred 120 g jars need 1,440 g and 22,560 g. Add a 3–5% planning allowance for wax left in the pot, a jar re-poured and a top-up on a sunken surface — at 4% that hundred-candle run becomes 1,248 g of oil and 19,552 g of wax. Then buy the pack that covers it and check the price per kilogram, because listed per-kilogram prices fall as the pack grows: Eucalyptus Spearmint is ₹4,562.67 a kilogram at 15 g, ₹4,248 at 50 g, ₹3,540 at 100 g, ₹3,304 at 500 g and ₹3,068 at 1 kg. CSI lists fragrance oils up to 1 kg — there is no 5 kg or 10 kg fragrance pack — so a larger requirement is several 1 kg bottles or a conversation, and the listed 1 kg price is the ceiling for your costing. One caveat: those figures assume every gram reaches a jar, and the last few grams cling to the bottle and the pot. That is why the candles-per-bottle column is rounded down — eight 200 g candles from a 100 g bottle leaves 4 g in hand, enough for a top-up and not a ninth candle.

CSI supplies raw materials — wax, fragrance oil, wicks, vessels, dyes, additives, equipment — and does not sell finished candles. That matters on a page about a low load, because the commercial incentive runs the other way: a supplier earns more when customers pour 10%. Frequently asked questions

What does a 6% fragrance load mean in grams?
Six grams of oil in every 100 g of finished candle: a 200 g candle is 12 g of oil and 188 g of wax, a 150 g jar 9 g and 141 g, a 120 g jar 7.2 g and 112.8 g, a 70 g votive 4.2 g and 65.8 g. Per kilogram of wax that is 63.83 g, using oil = wax × 6 ÷ 94. Measured against wax weight instead, 6% is a smaller dose — 5.66% of the finished candle.
Is a 6% fragrance load too low for soy wax?
Not by any published figure. CSI 464 states "Fragrance Load Up to 10%", CSI 468 "Up to 13%", and 20 oil pages state a candle range beginning at 6%. Whether it is enough depends on the oil's note structure, the vessel, the room and above all the cure. Judge it at day 14 against an 8% jar poured the same afternoon, not against a memory.
Can I pour 6% in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks?
Physically yes, but below the band its page publishes. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page states "Recommended fragrance load: 8% to 13% of total wax weight" with "10% Recommended", so at 6% you are outside the range the wax is characterised in and lose the page as a reference. If a low load is the plan, CSI 464 states a ceiling rather than a range and leaves 6% clearly available. Never go the other way and exceed a stated maximum.
Is 6% the right fragrance load for paraffin candles?
On paraffin, 6% is usually the top rather than the bottom: 14 CSI oil pages state "Up to 6% for paraffin wax" alongside "Up to 10% for soy wax", and Citrus Lemon states "6-8% for paraffin wax". CSI's Semi Refined Paraffin Wax page gives a melting point of 80–90°C but no load, so the oil page is your figure. Never raise it to chase throw.
How much fragrance oil do I need for 100 candles at 6%?
For a hundred 200 g candles, 1,200 g of oil and 18,800 g of wax — 1,248 g and 19,552 g with a 4% planning allowance. That is a 1 kg bottle plus a 500 g bottle. In money, 1.2 kg of Eucalyptus Spearmint is ₹3,681.60 at 1 kg pricing against ₹4,908.80 at 8%. For 120 g jars allow 720 g per hundred.
Does a 6% candle need a different wick or a different cure?
The cure is the same: 14 to 21 days for soy containers by convention, and the Chunks page asks for "a minimum of 48 hours (ideally 1-2 weeks)". The wick needs its own test, because it is matched to the wax, the diameter and the load together — a wick proved at 10% is not automatically right at 6%. Settle the wick first, change the load second, re-check the wick after.
