Cold throw is the scent an unlit candle puts into the air. It has one release surface, one temperature and no flame to help it, which is why it behaves nothing like hot throw. This guide defines it properly, shows the arithmetic behind it, and gives you a way to score it.

Quick answers — read this first
What is cold throw? The scent a finished, unlit candle releases into the air at room temperature. Its only source is evaporation from the exposed wax surface — in a 6 cm jar, about 28.3 cm² — plus whatever has collected in the air under the lid.

What decides it? Five things: the volatility of the oil's top tier, the fragrance load, how long the candle has cured, the surface area and headspace of the vessel, and the temperature of the room it is sitting in. Not how strong the bottle smells.

Is cold throw the same as hot throw? No. Cold throw works at 25–35°C of ambient Indian room temperature; hot throw works at a melt pool that has to reach at least the wax's stated melting point — 50–53°C on CSI 468. Different temperature, different molecules, different result.

Why does it matter commercially? Because it is the only test a customer can run before paying. On a market table, in a gift shop, in a hamper — the candle is unlit, and the cold throw is the entire sales pitch.
The short answer
Definition: cold throw is measurable scent release from a solid wax surface at ambient temperature. It is a property of the finished candle, not of the oil in the bottle.
Mechanism: only the lightest, most volatile fragrance molecules leave a cool solid surface in useful quantity. That is why cold throw reads as the oil's top tier and hot throw reads as its base.
How to judge it: after a full cure, blind, at a fixed distance, against a control jar, at the same time of day, on a 0–5 scale. One sniff of one jar tells you nothing you can repeat.

Hot throw can be engineered by changing the wick until the pool reaches the glass. Cold throw gets the jar's full internal area from the moment the wax sets, and never more. For cold throw, vessel choice is a formulation decision, not a styling one.
Straight answer
What is cold throw in candle making, and what actually produces it?
Cold throw is the fragrance an unlit candle releases into the room. Physically it is evaporation from a cool, solid wax surface, and that surface is fixed the moment the wax sets: about 28.3 cm² in CSI's stated 6 cm Amber Shiny Glass Jar, about 78.5 cm² in the stated 10 cm Apothecary Jar. Because the surface is at Indian room temperature rather than in a melt pool, only the lightest and most volatile molecules leave it in useful quantity — which is why cold throw reads as the top of a fragrance and hot throw reads as its base. The Citrus Lemon page states "Top Notes Zesty lemon, lime - sharp, bright, immediately energising"; that tier is what a customer meets on the shelf. Five things move the number: the oil's stated note structure, the fragrance load (a 200 g candle at 8% carries 16 g of oil, at 10% it carries 20 g), the cureLuxury Soy Wax Chunks ask for "a minimum of 48 hours (ideally 1-2 weeks) before performing burn tests", and standard practice for soy containers is 14–21 days by family — the vessel's surface and headspace, and storage temperature. What does not produce cold throw is a strong-smelling bottle. Judge it on the cured candle, blind, against a control.
One line: cold throw is what evaporates from a fixed area of cool wax — so it is decided by the oil's top tier, the load, the cure, the jar's diameter and the room, in that order.

Cold throw, defined properly

Three quite different things get called cold throw in maker groups. Only one of them is worth measuring.

Cold throw is the scent a finished, unlit candle releases into the surrounding air. Every word in that sentence is load-bearing. Finished means poured, set and cured — not a jar poured yesterday. Unlit means no flame, no melt pool, no heat source. Into the surrounding air means measured at a distance, not with your nose in the glass. If you change any of those conditions you are measuring something else, and you will get an answer that does not predict what your customer experiences.

This matters because cold throw is the only performance figure your customer can verify without spending money. A shopper in a store, a guest at a market stall, a recipient opening a hamper — all of them meet an unlit candle. If it says nothing from thirty centimetres away, the strongest hot throw in the world never gets its chance. Cold throw is a commercial specification, not a nicety.

The three things cold throw is confused with. One: bottle strength. Neat oil on a blotter is undiluted and unbound; a candle is 8–13% oil dissolved in wax. The two have almost no relationship, which is why an oil that overwhelms you in the bottle can read quiet in a jar — the subject of why candles don't smell strong. Two: hot throw. Different temperature, different molecules, often a different verdict — see why a candle smells strong cold but weak when lit. Three: the smell of the jar after a burn. That is residual scent from a pool that has cooled, and it is a fourth thing again, covered in why fragrance smells different after burning.

Suppliers describe throw qualitatively because it is genuinely hard to quantify without a controlled room: the Verbena page states "Fragrance Strength: Strong in both cold and hot throw", and the Coffee Vanilla Tobacco page says "The cold throw is exceptional - leave a tester open at markets and let it sell itself". Those are useful signals about what an oil is built for. They are not measurements, and no supplier — CSI included — publishes a throw figure in square metres, because it would depend on your wax, load, cure, jar and room. The measurement has to happen at your bench.

Why an unlit candle smells at all

Smell requires molecules in the air, and for a candle on a shelf the only route from wax to nose is evaporation at ambient temperature. Fragrance oils are blends of many aroma materials with very different weights and volatilities, and the lighter ones leave a cool surface far more readily. It is the same reason perfumers talk about top, heart and base notes: the tiers are in practice a ranking by how readily each part of the blend takes to the air.

So a cold candle is a filter. It presents you with the part of the blend that evaporates easily at 25–35°C, which in an Indian home is most of the year. A lit candle is a different filter: the melt pool has to reach at least the wax's stated melting point before it is a pool at all — Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 states 50–53°C — and at that temperature the heavier base materials finally have enough energy to leave. That single difference explains almost every "why does it smell different when I light it" question in candle making, and it is the reason a base-heavy oil and a top-heavy oil can swap places between the two tests.

Weight, not quality
An oil whose character sits in the base is not a worse oil. Sandalwood Fragrance Oil is described on its page as "Warm, creamy sandalwood - smooth, rich, and sophisticated" with "Subtle earthy depth"; that structure is exactly why it carries in a melt pool. Judged only on a cold sniff, it will lose to a citrus every time — and a maker who buys on cold sniffs alone ends up with a collection that sells well and burns quietly. Score both, separately, and buy for the job.

The surface, the headspace and the lid

Two identical candles, two different jars, two different cold throws. Nothing in the recipe changed.

Because cold throw is evaporation, the area it evaporates from matters as much as what is in the wax. The area is simply the internal cross-section of the vessel: π × (diameter ÷ 2)². CSI publishes diameters on several containers, so this is arithmetic rather than guesswork. A stated 6 cm jar gives 28.3 cm²; a stated 10 cm jar gives 78.5 cm², which is 2.8 times as much releasing surface for exactly the same oil at exactly the same load. If you are comparing two scents, they must be in the same vessel or the comparison is meaningless.

Then there is the headspace — the air between the wax surface and the rim, sealed by the lid. On the 6 cm amber jar, a 1 cm gap between wax and rim encloses roughly 28 ml of air. Over hours and days that small volume saturates with the volatile tier, which is why the first sniff after lifting a lid is dramatically stronger than the second. That effect is real and it is worth designing for, but be honest with yourself about what it is: a concentrated first impression, not a stronger candle. A lidded jar on a market table sells by that first sniff. An unlidded jar has to compete on true cold throw alone.

The trap: testing cold throw with the lid on. If you lift a lid and inhale, you are measuring the headspace, not the throw. Every jar you compare will smell strong and you will learn nothing. Test with the lid off, after the jar has stood open in the test room for twenty minutes, at a fixed distance you write down. Use the lid for what it is good at — protecting stock during the cure and giving a customer a strong first impression at the point of sale.

The five inputs that decide it

Cold throw has a short list of causes, and they are not equally expensive to change. Three of the five cost nothing at all — they are decisions about time, selection and storage. The other two cost money per candle, which means they should be the last things you reach for, not the first. Notice what is missing. There is no line for "buy a stronger oil", because strength is not a property you can read off a bottle — it is the outcome of the five rows above. There is no line for the wick either: a wick does nothing until the candle is lit. That missing variable is exactly why cold throw is the cleaner of the two tests, and the sensible place to begin any investigation into a quiet candle.

Load is a share of the finished candle
Throughout this series, load means oil ÷ finished candle weight: a 200 g candle at 8% is 184 g of wax and 16 g of oil. Some wax pages phrase it differently — the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page states "Recommended fragrance load: 8% to 13% of total wax weight", which is a share of the wax instead. The two conventions give slightly different gram figures, so pick one, write it on your recipe card and never mix them mid-batch. The full working is in how to calculate fragrance load.

What the oil pages actually state

Three oils, chosen because their published note structures illustrate three different relationships with cold throw. Every specification below is quoted from the product page; where a page states nothing, this guide says so rather than filling the gap. Per-candle figures assume a 120 g candle at an 8% load — 110.4 g of wax and 9.6 g of oil — which is the fill CSI's stated 6 cm amber jar is listed for.

Verbena Fragrance Oil
One of the few CSI pages that addresses cold throw head-on in its specification block: "Fragrance Strength: Strong in both cold and hot throw". It is described as a single note — "Main Aroma: Crisp lemony verbena with herbal undertones" — so there is no heavy base to hold anything back, and the page also publishes a measured "Flashpoint: 200°C" and "Vanillin Content: 0% (No discoloration risk)". Stated load is "Up to 10% for soy wax Up to 6% for paraffin wax" with a stated cure of "48–72 hours for soy wax". Gourmand-woody · a heavy blend that still reads cold
Coffee Vanilla Tobacco Fragrance Oil
Proof that cold throw is not simply a citrus privilege. The stated pyramid is a "Deep Coffee Opening with Creamy Vanilla Heart and Warm Tobacco-Amber Dry-Down" — heavy at the bottom, but with a roasted coffee top that is itself volatile. The page's claim is commercial and specific: "The cold throw is exceptional - leave a tester open at markets and let it sell itself". Stated load is "Recommended load - candles 7-9% soy wax (strong throw at lower loads)" with "Start at 7% and test", and the page warns plainly that the oil "contains vanilla and cocoa, which will cause significant browning in white or light-coloured wax over time" — so pour it into a colour you have chosen on purpose. It is the most expensive of the three per candle, and at 7% rather than 8% that gap narrows.

A supplier's wording is a signal, not a result. "Exceptional cold throw" on a product page tells you what the blend was designed to do and how other makers have used it. It does not tell you what it will do in your wax at your load in your jar after your cure, because none of those were part of the sentence. Use stated notes and stated loads to build a shortlist of three or four candidates, then let a blind test on cured jars pick the winner. That is the whole argument of the best oils for strong cold throw, and it applies to every supplier including this one.

Scoring cold throw so it is a number

"It smells nice" is not data. It is a memory of a smell, recorded by the least reliable instrument in the workshop.

Human olfaction adapts within seconds and drifts with hunger, humidity, time of day and expectation. That does not make your nose useless — it makes an uncontrolled nose useless. The protocol below removes four sources of error: fatigue, bias, inconsistent distance and inconsistent cure. It costs nothing beyond jars you were pouring anyway, and turns cold throw into a figure you can compare next month.

Pour identical jars and one unscented controlSame wax, same load, same jar, same pour temperature, same day. Add one jar with no fragrance at all. The control is the single most useful jar in the test, because it tells you what plain soy smells like from thirty centimetres — and plain soy is not odourless. Label on the base, not the lid, so the labels cannot be seen during the sniff.

Cure them together and judge nothing earlyLids on, in a closed carton, one room, out of sunlight. Set the room up once and never change itOne room, no incense, no cooking, no other candles, windows shut for thirty minutes beforehand. Write down the room temperature — cold throw is temperature-dependent, so a 33°C afternoon and a 22°C morning are not the same test. Take the lids off and leave the jars standing open for twenty minutes before anyone smells anything.

Sniff at a fixed distance, blind, with resetsMark 30 cm on the bench with tape and keep your nose behind it — nose-in-the-jar readings are headspace readings. Have someone else shuffle the jars. Between jars, breathe through a clean sleeve or step outside for a minute; without a reset the second jar always scores lower than it deserves.

Score 0–5 on two axes, not oneReach: 0 = nothing at 30 cm, 3 = clearly there at 30 cm, 5 = obvious as you walk into the room. Recognition: can a person who has not been told name the scent family? A candle that scores 4 on reach and 1 on recognition has a projection problem and an identity problem, and they need different fixes.

Get three noses, not one, and keep the sheetThree people scoring blind will disagree, and the spread is information: wide disagreement usually means the throw is marginal. Average the scores, write the figure on the recipe card with the room temperature and the cure day, and file it. Six months of those sheets is the most valuable document a small candle business owns.
Two instruments worth ₹354 each
Cold throw depends on load, and load is a weight percentage — so a Candle Making Weighing Scale at ₹354 is not optional if you intend to repeat a result. Why cold throw is the number that sells

Every other candle specification is judged after the money has changed hands — burn time, hot throw, tunnelling, soot, how long the scent holds in a bedroom. Cold throw is the one that happens before it: on a market table, on a shelf, in the two seconds a guest lifts a lid at a Diwali gathering. For a maker selling at exhibitions and through gifting orders, that makes it the sharpest commercial lever in the formulation.

CSI customers describe the effect without using the jargon. One review of Apple Cinnamon Fragrance Oil reads: "My customer was very happy with this apple cinnamon fragrance. As soon as they entered their home this smell is warmth and pleasing. And I got many orders who visited their home, as they also loved the smell." That is a cold-throw sale — visitors smelling an unlit candle in a room, then ordering. Another, on British Rose Fragrance Oil, is unusually precise about the thing this page is about: "I found what am looking for strong fragrance in cold throw and hot throw and you can go for the minimum percentage in candle still it will give amazing smell".

Designing a collection on cold throw alone. The opposite mistake is just as expensive. If you pick every scent by cold sniff, you will systematically over-select bright, volatile, top-heavy oils — and your customers will light them and find the room quiet after an hour. The fix is not to stop caring about cold throw; it is to score both throws separately and require a scent to pass both before it earns a place in the range. The CSI principle
Cold throw is the only part of your candle the customer gets to test for free. Everything else they have to take on trust.
Which means cold throw is not a bonus feature of a good candle — it is the advertisement for one. A range that opens well on the shelf earns the chance to prove itself at home. A range that says nothing unlit never gets asked.

That is worth stating here, because the commercially convenient definition of cold throw would be "how strong the oil smells" — and we sell the oil. It is not that. Cold throw is a property of the candle you build, and the biggest lever on it, the cure, costs you nothing and earns us nothing.

What does cold throw mean in candle making?
It is the scent a finished, cured, unlit candle releases into the air at room temperature. The only mechanism is evaporation from the exposed wax surface — about 28.3 cm² in a stated 6 cm jar — so only the lighter, more volatile parts of a fragrance oil contribute much. Cold throw is a property of the candle, not of the bottle: the same oil will give different cold throw in different waxes, loads, jars and cure lengths.
Is cold throw the same as hot throw?
No, and treating them as one number is the most common reason a candle disappoints. Cold throw happens at 25–35°C ambient from a solid surface. Hot throw happens from a melt pool that must reach at least the wax's stated melting point — CSI 468 states 50–53°C — where heavier base materials finally evaporate. A top-heavy oil often wins cold and loses hot; a base-heavy oil does the reverse. Score them separately.
How long should I wait before testing cold throw?
Longer than most makers do. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks you to "cure for a minimum of 48 hours (ideally 1-2 weeks) before performing burn tests", and several oil pages state 48–72 hours for soy. Those are minimums before testing is meaningful at all. Standard practice for soy container candles is 14–21 days by fragrance family, and the Citrus Lemon page agrees in principle: "citrus fragrances benefit from full cure time to develop their best cold throw".
Which fragrance oils have the best cold throw?
Structurally, oils with a bright and volatile top tier. Citrus Lemon states a full citrus pyramid from lemon and lime down to mandarin; Verbena states "Strong in both cold and hot throw"; Coffee Vanilla Tobacco states "The cold throw is exceptional" on the strength of a roasted coffee opening. Those are the pages' own words, not test results — build a shortlist from them and settle it with a blind test on cured jars.
Does a bigger jar give better cold throw?
A wider jar gives more releasing surface, which is not the same as better value. A stated 10 cm Apothecary Jar offers 78.5 cm² against 28.3 cm² in a stated 6 cm jar — 2.8 times the area — but it also holds roughly four times the wax and oil. For the same money, two smaller candles in two rooms often out-perform one large one. Height adds nothing to cold throw; only diameter does.
Can cold throw be too strong?
It can be misleading. A candle that shouts unlit sets an expectation the hot throw then has to meet, and if the oil is all top tier the customer feels let down an hour after lighting it. It can also be a symptom: oil that has not gone fully into solution can sit at the surface, reading strong cold while sweating and drowning the wick later. If your cold throw is remarkable and the surface looks oily, check the load against the wax's stated ceiling and read can too much fragrance oil make a candle smell weaker.
