₹1 Lakh · 5 Deep or 15 Shallow
Fifteen scents at 100 g scent only 90 candles and leave most of the lakh with nothing to do; fifteen at 15 g cannot scent a single full 200 g candle at 8%. The answer is both, in different sizes: five deep to sell, ten at 50 g to test.
90 vs 365
candles from 15 scents at 100 g against 5 scents deep, each in a full ₹1 lakh basket · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
5 deep or 15 shallow? Both, in different sizes: five deep at 66 candles to sell, ten candidates at 50 g to test. 360 candles, ₹15,851.02 kept.

What is the minimum test quantity? 50 g — three 200 g candles at 8%. 15 g cannot scent a full 200 g candle once pour loss is counted; it scents 2 × 85 g tins.

What does 15 × 100 g leave? 90 candles (60 to sell after tests) for ₹23,868.68, and ₹76,131.32 with nothing to scent.

What does 5 deep leave? 365 candles (355 to sell) for ₹84,629.08, and ₹15,370.92 in reserve.
The short answer
Answer: Neither alone. Five deep (66 candles each) plus ten candidates at 50 g, Natural Soy Pearl and White Matte jars: ₹84,148.98 at CSI, ₹15,851.02 to promote the candidates that test well.
Floor: A 200 g candle at 8% needs 16.48 g of oil with loss: 15 g scents none, 50 g three, 100 g six.
Trap: Shallow breadth cannot absorb a lakh: oil for six candles a scent needs only six jars' worth of wax. The rest waits or goes idle.
₹1 lakh: five deep, fifteen shallow, or both? 200 g candle (illustrative) at 8% · Natural Soy Pearl · White Matte jars · tools and wick test in every option · ≥15% kept back 5 deep 5 × 73 candles ₹84,629.08 ₹15,370.92 of the lakh unspent (dashed) 365 candles 355 sellable 15 × 100 g 6 candles a scent ₹23,868.68 ₹76,131.32 of the lakh unspent (dashed) 90 candles 60 sellable 15 × 50 g 3 candles a scent ₹13,136.18 ₹86,863.82 of the lakh unspent (dashed) 45 candles 15 sellable 5 deep + 10 × 50 g 5 × 66 + 10 × 3 ₹84,148.98 ₹15,851.02 of the lakh unspent (dashed) 360 candles 320 sellable Shallow breadth cannot use the budget: oil for 6 candles a scent needs only 6 jars' worth of wax. The money either waits or goes idle.
Four full ₹1 lakh baskets, each with tools, a wick test and wax, jars and wicks bought to the candles its oil can scent. The shaded bar is CSI spend; the dashed remainder is what is left unspent. Shallow breadth leaves most of the lakh with no candle to go into.
Straight answer
With a ₹1 lakh raw-material budget, is it better to launch 5 fragrances with deeper inventory or 15 fragrances with very small quantities?
Launch five deep and test ten at 50 g — two different jobs, two different sizes. At a working 8% a 200 g candle needs 16.48 g of oil with pour loss, so a 15 g bottle cannot scent one full candle, 50 g scents three (the minimum sensible burn test) and 100 g scents six. Fifteen scents at 100 g therefore make only 90 candles — 60 to sell after tests — and leave ₹76,131.32 of the lakh with nothing to scent. Five scents deep make 365. The hybrid stocks five oils at 66 candles each and ten candidates at 50 g, with Natural Soy Pearl and White Matte jars: 360 candles for ₹84,148.98, keeping ₹15,851.02 to promote the candidates that earn it.
One line: sell five, test ten, keep the cash to promote what you learn.
Fifteen fragrances at 100 g each make only 90 candles — and after two test candles per scent, 60 to sell. Five fragrances deep make 365. This page's answer is both: five deep at 66 candles plus ten candidates at 50 g, 360 candles for ₹84,148.98 at CSI, with ₹15,851.02 kept to promote the candidates that test well. The shared base is Natural Soy Pearl Wax, the only CSI soy wax with a real bulk break (₹424.80 a kilo from 5 kg).
Shop fragrance oils

First: the smallest sensible quantity of an oil

"Very small quantities" has a floor. Below it, a bottle cannot tell you whether a scent works in your candle.

Before comparing five deep with fifteen shallow, settle what "shallow" can mean. CSI lists 51 oils with an in-stock 15 g bottle; many start at 50 g or 100 g. At a working 8% in a 200 g candle — an illustrative fill for the White Matte jar, whose fill CSI does not publish — one candle needs 16 g of oil, or 16.48 g with 3% pour loss. That single number sets what each bottle size can do.

200 g candle (illustrative) at 8% · 3% pour loss · test-candle roles are labelled working practice
What 15 g, 50 g and 100 g of one oil can actually test
Bottle 200 g candles it scents What that lets you learn Minimum for…
15 g 0 — a 15 g bottle scents one candle of up to 182 g, or 2 × 85 g tins Cold-throw sniff test; one short candle or two tins; no burn comparison in your real jar Smelling a scent before you test it
50 g 3 Two burn-test candles and one shelf candle in your real jar The minimum sensible test
100 g 6 The test above, plus three candles for samples or a first sale A test that can also start selling

So the honest floor for a candle-test of a scent in your own 200 g jar is 50 g. 15 g bottles are useful — for smelling, for a tin, for a quick cold-throw comparison — but they cannot put a full-size candle beside your control on a burn test at this load. They also cost more per gram: across the fifteen oils on this page, the 15 g bottle is between 4% and 100% dearer per gram than the same oil's 100 g. Between 50 g and 100 g there is usually no per-gram difference at all.

Check the 50 g before you plan around it
Not every oil has every size in stock. On the 4 October re-check, for example, Grapefruit Oleo's 50 g, Sacred Sandal Ember's 100 g and Sandalwood's 15 g, 50 g and 100 g were out of stock. Send your candidate list on WhatsApp and we will confirm which have a 50 g in stock before you order; where only 100 g is listed, that is your minimum test size.

Numbers in brackets are positions in CSI's best-selling sort — fourteen of the first fifteen, with Sandalwood (position 6) left out because its 15 g, 50 g and 100 g are out of stock on the 4 October re-check, and Dark Vanilla Oud added as the fifteenth. The sort order is not a sales forecast for you; choose your own fifteen.

Five deep against fifteen shallow, priced

Now put each approach into a full basket: tools and a wick test in every option, Natural Soy Pearl, White Matte jars, production wicks and stickers bought to the candle count the oil can actually scent, and at least 15% of the ₹1 lakh kept back. The column that answers the title is the last one — what each approach leaves for wax and jars, and whether it can use it.

The shallow rows reveal the trap. Fifteen 100 g bottles cost ₹7,492.28 and scent 90 candles; the wax, jars and wicks for those candles cost ₹14,807.00. That leaves ₹76,131.32 of the lakh with nothing to do. Spend it on more wax and jars and it becomes stock no oil can scent; leave it, and you have launched a fifteen-scent business with 60 candles to sell — 4 per scent once the tests are poured. Five deep, by contrast, puts 365 candles on the shelf, 71 saleable per scent, and still keeps ₹15,370.92 back.

The CSI principle
Shallow breadth is a test budget, not an inventory. Deep depth is an inventory, not a test. A ₹1 lakh launch needs both, in different sizes.
Buy deep where you have a reason to; buy 50 g where you want to learn; and keep the cash to promote what you learn.

The answer: five deep, ten tested, cash to promote

Treat the fifteen as two different jobs: five scents to sell, ten scents to find out about.

The hybrid takes the five oils you have most reason to back — here the top of CSI's best-selling sort, as an example — and stocks them 66 candles deep. The other ten are bought at 50 g each, the minimum sensible test: three 200 g candles per scent, two to burn beside a deep-scent control and one for the shelf or a customer sample. Every line is a listed, in-stock CSI pack and the lines close exactly on ₹1,00,000.

The ten candidates cost ₹2,891.38 in all — 2.9% of the budget — for the right to evaluate ten scents properly. The deep five cost ₹21,882.20. The reserve, ₹15,851.02, is sized for what comes next: promoting a candidate that tests well to a 100 g bottle and six more jars costs about ₹1,312.25–₹1,854.25 including wax and wicks, so the reserve could in principle promote most of the ten. In practice two or three will earn it, and the rest of the reserve is there for reorders of the deep five.

The BOM and the candle count

Per 200 g candle at 8%: 16 g of oil, 184 g of wax. Natural Soy Pearl's page publishes no fragrance ceiling, so 8% is a labelled test value inside the general 6–10% starting range — ask CSI on WhatsApp for the wax maker's stated maximum. The stack: 10 wick-test candles from the deep five (two each) and 30 evaluation candles from the candidates counted as whole candles; 3% pour loss on wax and oil; glass breakage from the spare jars pack rounding leaves; round to real packs.

The basket makes 360 candles. Every deep oil and every candidate is bought to its own count; jars and wax are bought to the total and land just above it. At these prices a deep-five candle costs from ₹203.19 to ₹241.43 in materials, before labour, packaging, freight and GST.

The 15 g catalogue. Fifteen 15 g bottles for ₹1,522.48 looks like the cheapest way to launch fifteen scents. At 8% in a 200 g jar none of them can scent a single full candle with pour loss counted, and each costs more per gram than its 100 g bottle. Fix: use 15 g for smelling and for 85 g tin tests (2 tins a bottle); use 50 g when you want a real burn test in your real jar.

Testing ten candidates against five controls

1
Settle the wick on the deep five firstTwo test candles per deep scent — Eco Thin C1 and Eco Thick C2. CSI publishes no wick-per-diameter chart and no temperatures for Soy Pearl; record the temperatures you use.
2
Pour each candidate on the winning wickThree candles per candidate from its 50 g bottle. If a candidate behaves differently on that wick, test it on the other before judging the scent.
3
Use a deep scent as the controlBurn each candidate beside one of the deep five in the same room, same day, same cure age. You are judging the candidate against a scent you already trust.
4
Score blindSomeone who does not know which is which scores cold and hot throw 0–5 from a fixed spot. CSI publishes no throw data for any oil; your sheet is the only evidence.
5
Keep one candle per candidate for customersThe third candle goes on the shelf for a storage check — or to two or three customers whose opinion you value.
6
Promote on evidenceA candidate that matches or beats its control earns a 100 g bottle and six jars from the reserve (about ₹1,312.25–₹1,854.25). One that does not is finished at 50 g — no dead stock.

Safety lines come first: a candle that runs a taller flame, soots or heats the jar more than the control fails whatever its scent. CSI publishes no numeric limits; use your jar supplier's guidance and the candle fire-safety standard you work to.

Argued against our own interest, plainly. Fifteen scents at 100 g would sell you fifteen bottles; five scents deep would sell you five bigger ones. We would rather sell you ten 50 g bottles that most of the time end there — because the two or three that earn a 100 g bottle will be bought again and again, and the rest will not be sitting in your cupboard as ₹3,471.50 of oil you were never going to pour.
Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026. A five-deep launch with ten candidates on test can be poured and cured before the festive weeks, and the reserve is ready for whichever candidates earn their place. Send us your fifteen on WhatsApp and we will check stock, flag any without a 50 g size and price the basket. Larger quantities are quoted; no volume discount figure is published.

The ₹10,000 hub sets the allocation rules. ₹50,000: wax and jars or more fragrances shows that width barely moves the candle count once a basket is balanced; ₹1 lakh without dead stock stages the oils; the smallest pilot before ₹1 lakh sizes the stage before this one; and three sizes in five fragrances is the next step once the deep five are proven.

Why trust this guide

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. Fifteen bottles or five big ones would both suit our till. This page recommends ten 50 g bottles that will mostly never be reordered, because that is the cheapest honest way for you to find the two or three scents worth backing.

Frequently asked questions

How many candles can 15 g of fragrance oil make?
At 8% with 3% pour loss, one candle of up to about 182 g — or 2 × 85 g tins. Not a full 200 g candle.
How much fragrance oil do I need to test a new scent?
50 g for a real burn test in a 200 g jar at 8%: three candles — two to burn, one for the shelf.
Is it better to launch with fewer candle scents?
Launch fewer to sell and test more on the side. Five deep plus ten at 50 g gives both depth and learning.
Are 15 g fragrance samples worth buying?
For smelling and tin tests, yes. They cost more per gram than 100 g and cannot fill a 200 g candle at 8% — use 50 g for a full burn test.
How many candles does ₹1 lakh of raw materials make?
In this hybrid, 360 candles of 200 g (illustrative). Five deep alone makes 365; fifteen at 100 g only 90.
What do I do with a fragrance that tests poorly?
Nothing — that is the point of 50 g. Its three candles were the test; no further oil was bought.
Sell five, test ten
Five scents deep to sell. Ten at 50 g to learn. Cash to back what you learn.

Non-price figures and assumptions: CSI convention: fragrance load is a share of the finished candle (200 g at 8% = 16 g oil + 184 g wax; with 3% pour loss, 16.48 g of oil). The White Matte fill is not published; 200 g is illustrative. What CSI's product pages state (quoted, not CSI test results): Luxury Soy Wax Chunks — maximum fragrance load 13%; Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 — up to 10%, shelf life 60 months in cool, dry storage; Premium Coconut Soy Wax CSI 468 — up to 13%, melting point 50–53°C, pour 58–60°C, shelf life 60 months cool and dry; Natural Soy Pearl — no fragrance ceiling, temperatures or shelf life published. 51 oils list an in-stock 15 g; the 15 g premium over 100 g (median 23.1% across the catalogue) is from the 24 September pull. Two test candles per scent, three evaluation candles per candidate, 3% pour loss and the 15% reserve line are labelled working assumptions. Best-selling positions are the collection's sort order, not sales data. Material costs exclude labour, packaging, freight and GST. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November.
