If you buy only one oil: why it is Lavender

For a soy maker buying a single fragrance, four things decide "best". Evidence from people who poured it — a buyer writing that it worked in a candle. Breadth of appeal, because one scent has to sell as a gift, a self-purchase and a spa candle with no second scent to catch the customer who walks past. A price ladder that lets you test small. And behaviour in your own wax and jar, which only the trial later in this guide can answer. The table covers the first three. British Rose is the closest challenger, and on price it wins outright: ₹34.45 less oil in every 200g candle. What keeps Lavender first is depth and breadth: its evidence comes from several buyers rather than one, and lavender sells to the customer who wants calm, the one buying for a parent, and the salon or spa. Rose is a more decided taste. If your budget is tight or your market leans floral, British Rose is a defensible "only one"; for the broadest first candle, it is Lavender.

What soy wax asks of a fragrance oil

Three general properties of soy container wax shape which oils do well in it. They are working principles, not CSI claims about any particular oil.

A gentler melt pool. Soy generally releases fragrance more softly than paraffin, which is why the same oil can seem louder in paraffin (the mechanism is here). Oils with a lasting base — woods, resins, gourmand notes — tend to hold up better in soy than blends built mostly on bright, fast-evaporating top notes.

Temperatures that matter. CSI's soy pages state 80–90°C for adding fragrance to Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and 85°C with two minutes of gentle stirring for Eco Soy CSI 400. A cure that changes the verdict. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page says to cure a minimum of 48 hours, ideally one to two weeks, before burn testing; 14–21 days is standard practice for soy containers, with heavier families at the longer end.

The best fragrance oil in each family for soy

Once the first oil is proven, the second should be as different as possible from it. Lavender, Jasmine, Gardenia and Rose looks like choice but is one customer's taste four times over. The table picks one CSI oil per family, favouring oils with a published review about the fragrance in use, and flags where a family carries a known soy caution.

These are not claims that each oil beats its whole family — most CSI oils have no reviews yet — only that a buyer has put something useful in writing. Which soy wax to pair with each oil

Four CSI container waxes do almost all the work in a soy-based line. They differ in the two ways that matter to your oil: the stated fragrance load, which decides how far you can adjust, and the wax cost inside the candle, which decides whether a premium wax is earning its keep.

Three pairing rules follow. Rule 1 — if you might need to go above 10%, don't pour the test in CSI 464. Its stated ceiling is 10%. If Lavender is quiet at 8% after cure and you want to try 11% or 12%, you need a wax stated to hold it — Luxury Soy Wax Chunks or CSI 468 — and moving waxes means testing twice.

Rule 2 — an oil that performs at 8% doesn't need a premium wax to carry it. If British Rose passes at 8% in Eco Soy CSI 400, the ₹36.80 extra per candle for Chunks buys headroom you are not using. Spend it on the jar or label, where the customer sees it.

Rule 3 — the more expensive the oil, the more the wax should be a known quantity. Gilli Mitti at ₹143.36 per candle or Dark Vanilla at ₹122.34 deserves a wax with stated add and pour temperatures, so a failure can be traced. Natural Soy Pearl Wax (₹450) and Premium Coconut Soy Wax (₹920) state no load or temperatures — prove them with a cheaper oil first.

What each oil-and-wax pairing costs per candle

Most soy makers never put the wax and the oil side by side in the same candle. The table does, at 1 kg pricing for both and a 200g candle at 8% — 184g of wax, 16g of oil. Jar, wick and label are left out because they don't change with the pairing.

Working: wax per candle = 184g × price per gram — Eco Soy CSI 400 184 × ₹0.399 = ₹73.42, CSI 464 184 × ₹0.5074 = ₹93.36, Chunks 184 × ₹0.599 = ₹110.22 — plus the oil line; totals are rounded from unrounded products.

Two readings matter. First, the oil is as big a decision as the wax. Lavender costs ₹34.45 more per candle than British Rose; Luxury Soy Chunks cost ₹36.80 more than Eco Soy CSI 400. Makers agonise over the wax and pick the oil by smell, when the rupees are almost equal. Second, the extremes are wide: British Rose in Eco Soy CSI 400 is ₹122.50 of core materials, Lavender in Chunks ₹193.75 — ₹71.25 apart on the same candle. That is a pricing decision, not a problem, as long as you know it before both sit at one retail price.

Raising the load moves these numbers faster than switching wax. From 8% to 10%, 4g of wax becomes 4g of oil: on Lavender in Chunks that is +₹20.88 of oil, −₹2.40 of wax, a net ₹18.49 per candle. Earn every extra point with a cured burn test; don't start high "to be safe".

Proving your one oil: the six-jar, three-wax trial

Before a single kilo, pour your chosen oil into the three soy waxes you are deciding between, with everything else identical, so the result tells you which pairing to reorder. From one oil to four: the order to add scents

A soy range grows safely when each new scent is tested small against the one already proven, and only survivors are bought by the kilo. The ladder assumes each newcomer is tested in a 100g bottle, then reordered at 1 kg.

Four kilos is about 248 candles at 8% — 62 per kilo, because 1,000g ÷ 16g = 62.5 — and the average fragrance cost across those four oils is ₹16,558.20 ÷ 4,000g × 16g = ₹66.23 per 200g candle.
