Is 10% too much for CSI 464? It is exactly the page’s stated maximum, so it is within the rating but leaves no headroom. Weigh precisely, check a cured candle in a warm spot for 48 hours, and prefer 9% for April–June courier stock.
How can I tell if my candle has too much fragrance oil? Beads of oil or a greasy sheen on the set surface, a translucent ring on a pressed tissue, oil under the lid or on the box, and a sooty, mushrooming wick when lit. Wet spots and frosting are not signs of overload.
The verdict, grade by grade
All loads here are percentages of wax weight, the way CSI product pages state them: 10% means 10 g of fragrance oil for every 100 g of wax. “Hold” means the oil stays bound in the wax through setting, curing, warm days and the journey to a customer, without beading on the surface or seeping at the glass. A wax’s stated fragrance load is the manufacturer’s figure for how much it is formulated to hold. It is not a promise about any oil, jar or climate, which is why the answer below comes with a margin.

So the answer is yes for the three container grades that publish a figure, and “we have not published it” for the rest — which is different from no. For Eco Soy CSI 400 in particular, its page gives an add temperature (85°C, within 80–90°C, with a gentle 2-minute stir) but no ceiling; message CSI before you plan a 10% range around it, and treat any test you run in the meantime as unconfirmed.
A kitchen picture helps with what “hold” means. A rasgulla soaks up syrup to a point; press it and the excess runs out. Cooling soy wax sets into a network of tiny crystals that holds fragrance oil in much the same way, and in a candle the press is warmth and time: heat softens the network, and oil the wax cannot keep comes to the surface or collects at the glass. That is general candle-making practice, and it is why the same 10% can be comfortable in one grade and marginal in another.
What 10% means in grams — and the “other” 10%
The arithmetic is short: oil grams = wax grams × 0.10. 200 g of wax takes 20 g of oil; a 1 kg melt takes 100 g. The catch is the jar. Container pages describe capacity in different ways — some as the wax a jar holds, some as a fill weight — and if a capacity is really the total you can pour, 10% of wax weight means slightly less wax and slightly less oil than the headline number. The table shows both readings for CSI containers; weigh a trial fill of your own jar to know which applies (how much wax one candle needs).

Now the other 10%. Some recipes, calculators and sellers state fragrance as a percentage of the finished candle, not of the wax. In a 150 g pour, 10% of the candle is 15 g of oil and 135 g of wax — and 15 ÷ 135 is 11.1% of wax weight. For Luxury Soy Wax Chunks or CSI 468 that is still inside a 13% ceiling. For CSI 464 it is over the stated 10%. When a recipe says 10%, find out which 10% before you pour it into a wax rated to exactly that. (Going the other way, 8% of the candle is 8.7% of the wax.)
Then units. Ten per cent is by weight. Fragrance oils differ in density, so 20 ml of one oil is not 20 g, and 20 ml of two different oils are not the same weight as each other. Pour oil into a tared pitcher on a gram scale. At 13.6 g of oil in a 150 g jar, a 1 g slip is about 7% of the dose — the difference between 10% and roughly 10.7%. CSI’s Candle Making Weighing Scale (₹354.00) reads in grams but is down to its last couple of units; any kitchen scale with 1 g steps will do the job (oil for a 100 g candle).

When is 10% right in CSI 464? When a cured candle at 9% with a full melt pool measurably falls short in the room it is sold for, and the oil’s own page also allows 10%. When is it wrong? When the oil page stops lower, when stock will sit in hot parcels between April and June, or when the real problem is the wick. For a range that wants 10% as the everyday load with room to spare, the Chunks cost ₹18.32 more per 200 g candle and give three points of headroom; for a range that throws well at 8–9%, CSI 464 is the cheaper, sound choice at ₹101.48 of wax per candle.
Three habits make 10% in CSI 464 dependable. Weigh oil to the gram on a scale, never by volume. Add it inside the working temperature range and stir slowly and fully — two minutes is the figure CSI gives for its soy chunks and a sensible habit for any soy — so the oil is dispersed before the wax starts to set (best temperature for adding fragrance oil to soy wax). And cure lids-on before judging anything.

For the Chunks the question almost answers itself: the page recommends 10%. The only caveat is the other ceiling on your bench — the oil page — which is the subject of the next section. For CSI 468 the wax clearly holds 10%, but its working temperatures sit far below the soy grades: a 58–60°C pour and a 50–53°C melting point. Adding oil at 85°C out of habit means holding a coconut-soy blend much hotter than its page implies, so ask for the add temperature before your first 10% batch.
Three points of headroom are what make these two grades forgiving at 10%. A 1 g slip, a warmer-than-planned cure room in Chennai, or a parcel that spends an afternoon in a van still leaves the candle well inside the rating. That margin is the practical reason a maker who wants 10% everywhere, all year, might choose one of them over CSI 464 — and not a reason to start loading them to 13%.
The oil has a limit too: where 10% sits on CSI oil pages
CSI fragrance oil pages carry their own usage figures, and for most of them 10% is the top of the range, not the middle. That matters most in CSI 464: a 10% candle with a 6–10% oil is at the wax’s maximum and the oil’s maximum at the same time. It matters too in the other direction — a wax with three spare points does not lift an oil page’s own figure.

Put the two tables together and a simple rule appears. In CSI 464, 10% is fine for any oil in the first ten rows and wrong for Fresh Strawberries. In Chunks or CSI 468, the same is true — the extra wax headroom does not change the Strawberries page. And where an oil page gives no range, ask CSI rather than borrowing a figure from a different oil. Some common faults look alarming but have nothing to do with fragrance load. Wet spots — patches where the wax has separated from the glass — are an adhesion and cooling matter (why candles get wet spots). Frosting, the white crystalline bloom on soy, is the wax itself (why soy wax frosts). Rough tops and sinkholes come from pouring and cooling. Lowering the load will not fix any of them, and blaming load for them is how makers end up with weaker candles that still have wet spots.
If a batch does show overload signs, it is rarely lost. General practice is to remelt, add unscented wax of the same grade to bring the load down, re-pour and cure again (can you remelt a failed candle). To take a 200 g-wax candle poured at 11% back to 10%, you need about 20 g more wax, since 22 g of oil ÷ 220 g of wax is 10%.

The extra oil is money well spent in one situation: a cured candle whose melt pool already reaches the glass and whose throw is clearly short for the room at 8%. It is money wasted in the more common one — a candle that smells weak because the pool is narrow, the cure was three days, or the oil is a soft one. An Eco C2 wick costs ₹3.54 more than a C1 and can widen a narrow pool; four more grams of Lavender cost ₹20.88 and cannot (eight reasons a candle smells weak at 10%).
Indian weather belongs in this decision too. Candles for summer courier dispatch out of Ahmedabad or Delhi carry heat risk all the way to the door, so 9% in CSI 464 buys margin for very little scent. Monsoon stock in Kolkata or Kochi mostly needs lids on and quick packing. And the finest 10% candle still loses its top notes if it cures uncapped for a fortnight (why a 14-day cure; fragrance oils for Indian summers).
