How much fragrance oil is 10% in grams? 10 g per 100 g of wax. 200 g of wax takes 20 g of oil; 1 kg takes 100 g. If a jar’s 150 g capacity is the total pour, that is 136.4 g wax + 13.6 g oil. Weigh in grams — millilitres are not the same.

Is 10% too much for CSI 464? It is exactly the page’s stated maximum, so it is within the rating but leaves no headroom. Weigh precisely, check a cured candle in a warm spot for 48 hours, and prefer 9% for April–June courier stock.

How can I tell if my candle has too much fragrance oil? Beads of oil or a greasy sheen on the set surface, a translucent ring on a pressed tissue, oil under the lid or on the box, and a sooty, mushrooming wick when lit. Wet spots and frosting are not signs of overload.

Can soy wax hold 10% fragrance oil?
Yes — for the CSI soy container grades that publish a fragrance load, 10% of wax weight is within the rating, but the margin differs. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 is rated up to 10%: 10% is allowed and is also the ceiling, so weigh exactly and prefer 9% for summer shipping. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks are rated up to 13% and their page names 10% as the recommended load. Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 is rated up to 13%, leaving three points spare — ask CSI for its add temperature first. Eco Soy CSI 400 and the other soy grades do not publish a ceiling, so ask before pouring 10%. Then check the oil: most CSI oil pages give 6–10% or up to 10%, and where the oil’s figure is lower (Fresh Strawberries, 6–9%), it governs. In grams, 10% is 20 g of oil per 200 g of wax. A candle holding more than it can shows beads of oil on the surface, a ring on a pressed tissue, oil under the lid, or a sooty, mushrooming wick.

The verdict, grade by grade

“Soy wax” is not one material with one limit. Each grade states its own ceiling — or states none — and 10% lands in a different place on each.

All loads here are percentages of wax weight, the way CSI product pages state them: 10% means 10 g of fragrance oil for every 100 g of wax. “Hold” means the oil stays bound in the wax through setting, curing, warm days and the journey to a customer, without beading on the surface or seeping at the glass. A wax’s stated fragrance load is the manufacturer’s figure for how much it is formulated to hold. It is not a promise about any oil, jar or climate, which is why the answer below comes with a margin.

So the answer is yes for the three container grades that publish a figure, and “we have not published it” for the rest — which is different from no. For Eco Soy CSI 400 in particular, its page gives an add temperature (85°C, within 80–90°C, with a gentle 2-minute stir) but no ceiling; message CSI before you plan a 10% range around it, and treat any test you run in the meantime as unconfirmed.

A kitchen picture helps with what “hold” means. A rasgulla soaks up syrup to a point; press it and the excess runs out. Cooling soy wax sets into a network of tiny crystals that holds fragrance oil in much the same way, and in a candle the press is warmth and time: heat softens the network, and oil the wax cannot keep comes to the surface or collects at the glass. That is general candle-making practice, and it is why the same 10% can be comfortable in one grade and marginal in another.

Treating every soy wax as a 10% wax. Recipes online often say “soy wax takes 10%” as if the figure were universal. Container grades differ, pillar and butter blends are formulated for other jobs, and some grades publish no ceiling at all. Look up the grade on the bag, not the word “soy” — and if the bag or page gives no figure, ask the supplier before you weigh the oil.

What 10% means in grams — and the “other” 10%

Ten per cent is 10 g of oil per 100 g of wax. Most 10% mistakes come from measuring something else.

The arithmetic is short: oil grams = wax grams × 0.10. 200 g of wax takes 20 g of oil; a 1 kg melt takes 100 g. The catch is the jar. Container pages describe capacity in different ways — some as the wax a jar holds, some as a fill weight — and if a capacity is really the total you can pour, 10% of wax weight means slightly less wax and slightly less oil than the headline number. The table shows both readings for CSI containers; weigh a trial fill of your own jar to know which applies (how much wax one candle needs).

Now the other 10%. Some recipes, calculators and sellers state fragrance as a percentage of the finished candle, not of the wax. In a 150 g pour, 10% of the candle is 15 g of oil and 135 g of wax — and 15 ÷ 135 is 11.1% of wax weight. For Luxury Soy Wax Chunks or CSI 468 that is still inside a 13% ceiling. For CSI 464 it is over the stated 10%. When a recipe says 10%, find out which 10% before you pour it into a wax rated to exactly that. (Going the other way, 8% of the candle is 8.7% of the wax.)

Then units. Ten per cent is by weight. Fragrance oils differ in density, so 20 ml of one oil is not 20 g, and 20 ml of two different oils are not the same weight as each other. Pour oil into a tared pitcher on a gram scale. At 13.6 g of oil in a 150 g jar, a 1 g slip is about 7% of the dose — the difference between 10% and roughly 10.7%. CSI’s Candle Making Weighing Scale (₹354.00) reads in grams but is down to its last couple of units; any kitchen scale with 1 g steps will do the job (oil for a 100 g candle).

Tare, then pour to the gram
Put the empty pouring pitcher on the scale, press tare, pour the melted wax and note the grams. Multiply by 0.10 and write the answer on the batch card. Press tare again and pour fragrance oil slowly until the display reads that number. Two taps of tare remove every “about 20 ml” from your process.

CSI 464: 10% is allowed, and it is the ceiling

Rated up to 10% means 10% is inside the rating. It also means there is nothing left above it.

The product page states a fragrance load of up to 10%, describes excellent glass adhesion, a creamy, opaque finish, low frosting and minimal blooming, and gives 80–90°C as the working range for melting and pouring. A 10% candle in CSI 464 is within that rating, and a verified CSI 464 buyer above rates its quality “the best”. The practical difference is margin: at 9% you have a point of room for a heavy-handed pour or a hot week; at 10% you have none. The table shows what 10% means for each pack size at 200 g of wax per candle.

When is 10% right in CSI 464? When a cured candle at 9% with a full melt pool measurably falls short in the room it is sold for, and the oil’s own page also allows 10%. When is it wrong? When the oil page stops lower, when stock will sit in hot parcels between April and June, or when the real problem is the wick. For a range that wants 10% as the everyday load with room to spare, the Chunks cost ₹18.32 more per 200 g candle and give three points of headroom; for a range that throws well at 8–9%, CSI 464 is the cheaper, sound choice at ₹101.48 of wax per candle.

Three habits make 10% in CSI 464 dependable. Weigh oil to the gram on a scale, never by volume. Add it inside the working temperature range and stir slowly and fully — two minutes is the figure CSI gives for its soy chunks and a sensible habit for any soy — so the oil is dispersed before the wax starts to set (best temperature for adding fragrance oil to soy wax). And cure lids-on before judging anything.

Calculating 10% on the jar instead of the wax. A maker filling a 150 g-capacity jar weighs 15 g of oil (“10% of 150”), then tops the jar up with wax to the same 150 g. The jar now holds 135 g of wax and 15 g of oil — 11.1% of wax weight, over CSI 464’s stated maximum. Weigh the wax in the pitcher first and calculate the oil from that number: 136.4 g of wax and 13.6 g of oil fill the same jar at a true 10%.

For the Chunks the question almost answers itself: the page recommends 10%. The only caveat is the other ceiling on your bench — the oil page — which is the subject of the next section. For CSI 468 the wax clearly holds 10%, but its working temperatures sit far below the soy grades: a 58–60°C pour and a 50–53°C melting point. Adding oil at 85°C out of habit means holding a coconut-soy blend much hotter than its page implies, so ask for the add temperature before your first 10% batch.

Three points of headroom are what make these two grades forgiving at 10%. A 1 g slip, a warmer-than-planned cure room in Chennai, or a parcel that spends an afternoon in a van still leaves the candle well inside the rating. That margin is the practical reason a maker who wants 10% everywhere, all year, might choose one of them over CSI 464 — and not a reason to start loading them to 13%.

Hearing “holds 13%” as “needs 13%”. Headroom is insurance, not an instruction. A 13% wax at 10% is doing what its page recommends; the same wax at 13% is at its maximum, where the Chunks page asks you to test burn thoroughly. If a 10% candle in either grade smells weak, look at the wick, the cure and the oil before spending the spare points.
Diwali is 8 November 2026. A 10% hold check poured on 13 September gives a warm-room reading on 20–22 September and a first burn on 27 September, well before production candles need pouring around 15 October for a 14–21 day cure. The oil has a limit too: where 10% sits on CSI oil pages

A wax that holds 10% does not make 10% right for every oil. When the wax and the oil page disagree, the lower number governs.

CSI fragrance oil pages carry their own usage figures, and for most of them 10% is the top of the range, not the middle. That matters most in CSI 464: a 10% candle with a 6–10% oil is at the wax’s maximum and the oil’s maximum at the same time. It matters too in the other direction — a wax with three spare points does not lift an oil page’s own figure.

Put the two tables together and a simple rule appears. In CSI 464, 10% is fine for any oil in the first ten rows and wrong for Fresh Strawberries. In Chunks or CSI 468, the same is true — the extra wax headroom does not change the Strawberries page. And where an oil page gives no range, ask CSI rather than borrowing a figure from a different oil. Customer experience at these loads is encouraging: a verified Lavender buyer finds cold and hot throw “both are perfect”, another rates it “quite versatile”, and a Citrus Lemon buyer reports “good fragrance” — none of which needs more than the page allows.

Using the wax’s headroom to override the oil page. “The Chunks hold 13%, so 10% Fresh Strawberries is fine” reads the wrong label. The wax can hold it; the oil’s own page recommends 6–9% for candles. The lower figure governs, so this oil stops at 9% whatever the wax. In a 200 g candle, the point you skip also saves ₹7.08 of oil.

Some common faults look alarming but have nothing to do with fragrance load. Wet spots — patches where the wax has separated from the glass — are an adhesion and cooling matter (why candles get wet spots). Frosting, the white crystalline bloom on soy, is the wax itself (why soy wax frosts). Rough tops and sinkholes come from pouring and cooling. Lowering the load will not fix any of them, and blaming load for them is how makers end up with weaker candles that still have wet spots.

If a batch does show overload signs, it is rarely lost. General practice is to remelt, add unscented wax of the same grade to bring the load down, re-pour and cure again (can you remelt a failed candle). To take a 200 g-wax candle poured at 11% back to 10%, you need about 20 g more wax, since 22 g of oil ÷ 220 g of wax is 10%.

Calling a sweating candle “overloaded” without checking the temperature history. A 10% candle that sweats after a day in a hot car in Nagpur and one that sweats on a cool December shelf are different problems. The first is heat against a load with no margin; the second is more oil than that wax holds, or oil that never bound in. Note where the candle has been before changing the formula.

The 10% hold check: prove it before a festive batch

A throw test tells you whether 10% smells better. A hold check tells you whether it stays in the candle. You need both before 200 gift boxes go out.

Make the warm room honest
The 48-hour warm spot should be warmer than the candle’s normal shelf but not a stunt. An Indian top-floor room in late spring or a cupboard near a water heater is a fair stand-in for a parcel’s worst afternoon; a car dashboard in May is not — it will soften any container candle and tell you nothing about the load.

What 10% costs next to 8% — and when it will not help

Two extra points are four grams of oil per 200 g candle. Worth paying for when they add scent; pure cost when the wick or cure is the problem.

The extra oil is money well spent in one situation: a cured candle whose melt pool already reaches the glass and whose throw is clearly short for the room at 8%. It is money wasted in the more common one — a candle that smells weak because the pool is narrow, the cure was three days, or the oil is a soft one. An Eco C2 wick costs ₹3.54 more than a C1 and can widen a narrow pool; four more grams of Lavender cost ₹20.88 and cannot (eight reasons a candle smells weak at 10%).

The CSI principle
A wax holding 10% and a candle needing 10% are two different facts. Prove both before you pay for the second.
In CSI 464 the gap from 8% to 10% is ₹20.88 of Lavender per 200 g candle — ₹1,044.20 across 50 candles — and zero points of spare ceiling.

Indian weather belongs in this decision too. Candles for summer courier dispatch out of Ahmedabad or Delhi carry heat risk all the way to the door, so 9% in CSI 464 buys margin for very little scent. Monsoon stock in Kolkata or Kochi mostly needs lids on and quick packing. And the finest 10% candle still loses its top notes if it cures uncapped for a fortnight (why a 14-day cure; fragrance oils for Indian summers).

Ten per cent is a measurement, not a feeling. Weigh it, cure it, warm it, then decide.

Can CSI 464 soy wax hold 10% fragrance oil?
Yes. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 is rated for a fragrance load of up to 10%, so 10% is within its rating — and it is also the maximum, with no spare margin. Weigh the oil to the gram, keep to oils whose pages allow 10%, and use 9% for candles that will ship in Indian summer heat.
Is 10% fragrance load too much for soy candles?
Not for a soy container wax rated to 10% or more with an oil whose page allows it. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks recommend 10%; CSI 468 goes to 13%. It can be too much for an oil with a lower range — Fresh Strawberries is 6–9% — or in a wax whose ceiling you have not confirmed.
Why is my soy candle sweating at 10% fragrance?
Usually one of three things: the wax is rated to exactly 10% and the candle met heat with no margin, the oil went in too cool or was stirred too briefly to bind in, or the load was really above 10% — measured in millilitres, or calculated on the finished candle. Compare with an 8% jar from the same melt after 48 warm hours.
Does 10% fragrance oil mean 10 ml per 100 g of wax?
No. CSI pages state loads by weight: 10 g of oil per 100 g of wax. Fragrance oils differ in density, so 10 ml is not reliably 10 g. Tare a pitcher on a gram scale and pour oil to the weight you calculated.
Can coconut soy wax hold 10% fragrance oil?
Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 is rated up to 13%, so 10% leaves three points spare. Its page gives a 50–53°C melting point and 58–60°C pour, but no add temperature — ask CSI before your first batch. The Premium Coconut Soy Wax (virgin coconut blend) does not publish a ceiling.
Will 10% make my soy candle smell stronger than 8%?
Only if the melt pool, cure and oil are already right. The extra 4 g of oil per 200 g of wax costs ₹20.88 with Lavender; if the pool stops short of the glass, an Eco C2 wick at ₹3.54 more than a C1 is the better first fix. Judge at 14 days, on two burns.
