Which wax additives should a commercial candle producer use, how much per batch, and how do I keep them consistent at scale?
Use an additive only against a defect you have measured, at a rate the product page states, dosed per melter batch. For cracking, brittleness or poor release in pillars and moulded candles, Microcrystalline Wax Slab states 3–7% for pillars — 300–700 g per 10 kg batch, ₹89.70–₹209.30. For mottling and surface sweating, Vybar states 0.5–1% in soy and coconut wax and 1–2% in paraffin — 50–200 g per 10 kg batch, ₹156–₹624 — added before fragrance and colour. For a retail gloss, Candle Liquid Shiner goes on the fully cooled candle and air-dries in 10–15 minutes. Stearic acid has no stated rate, so it enters production only after your own test sets one, and CSI lists no UV inhibitor. Consistency comes from three habits: one additive rate per base wax across every scent, additive pre-weighed for each melter load on a ₹354 scale, and a batch record that logs the additive, its rate and its pack. Order additives from the wax plan — kilos of wax per month × rate × 10 gives grams — and move recurring volumes onto one WhatsApp quote with the wax.

Problem, additive, stated dose

Every additive on a production line should be able to answer one question: which defect are you here to prevent?

At hobby scale, an additive is something you try. At production scale, it is something you pay for on every batch for as long as the product exists, so it needs a job description. The table below starts from the defects that actually cost commercial producers money — rejects, returns and unsellable stock — and works right: what to rule out before reaching for an additive, which CSI additive's product page makes a relevant claim, what dose that page states, and what it means for a 10 kg batch. The mistake: letting an additive hide a process fault. A line that suddenly starts sweating after a hot week in storage, or cracking after the workshop fan was moved, has a process problem. Adding Vybar or microcrystalline wax may mask it for a while — and then you are paying for an additive on every batch to cover for a thermostat. Before an additive goes onto the batch sheet, rule out the process causes in why candle wax cracks, why a candle sweats fragrance oil and why soy candles frost.

Additives per melter batch

Commercial production happens in melter loads, not candles, so that is the unit additives should be weighed in. CSI lists an Electric Wax Melter in 10 kg (₹21,240) and 20 kg (₹25,960) capacity versions, and one customer who has used the 10 kg model for nine months describes 10 kg of wax melting "in mere 20-30 minutes" — a customer's experience, not a specification. The table gives each stated dose for a 1 kg test pot, a 10 kg batch and a 20 kg batch. At 184 g of wax per 200 g candle, a 10 kg batch is about 54 candles and a 20 kg batch about 108.

Rupees per batch are calculated at the per-gram price; in practice you buy whole packs. Microcrystalline comes as 500 g (₹149) and 1 kg (₹299) slabs, so a 700 g dose leaves 300 g of an opened slab for the next batch. Vybar comes as 50 g (₹156) and 100 g (₹312), which fit 10 kg and 20 kg batches at soy rates exactly. That neat fit is one reason soy container producers find Vybar easy to standardise: one sealed 50 g pack per 10 kg batch at 0.5% means no weighing from an open bag at all — though you should still check-weigh the pack.

Pre-weigh an additive cup for every melter load
At the start of a production day, weigh the additive for each planned batch into its own labelled cup or bag — "Batch 3 · soy · Vybar 50 g" — using a candle making weighing scale. When the wax is melted, the operator tips in the cup rather than weighing under time pressure beside a hot melter. An empty cup confirms the dose went in; a full cup at the end of the day is a batch that needs checking before it ships.

Microcrystalline wax has one more production note. Its page gives the melting point only as "High (varies by batch)" and says to melt thoroughly and stir well. In a large melter, chop or break the slab dose into smaller pieces so it melts through with the base wax rather than sitting as a lump, and confirm the melt is fully clear of pieces before fragrance goes in. Cutting slabs is also where a sturdy steel scraper (₹236) earns its place on the bench.

Order of addition on a production line

Additives go wrong on production lines less often through the wrong dose than through the wrong sequence under time pressure. The only order of addition CSI states is Vybar's — into melted wax before fragrance and colour — and the microcrystalline page's instruction to melt thoroughly and stir well. The standard operating sequence below builds around those two statements and your base wax's own stated temperatures.

Allow it to dry fully before any test burn. Log the lacquer bottle used against the batch.
Don't add Vybar after the fragrance "because it was forgotten". It happens on busy days: the fragrance is already in, and someone tips the Vybar cup in afterwards. The page says before fragrance and colour, so that batch is now outside the recipe. Mark it, pour it separately, and test it before it joins the stock. The cup system in the previous section exists precisely so a forgotten additive is caught at step 3, not discovered by a customer.

The production additives, pack by pack

Three CSI products do most of the additive work on a production line; the fourth, stearic acid, only joins once your own test has fixed a rate. Each card's size table counts how many 10 kg-batch doses a pack holds at a stated rate, because on a production floor that is the unit that matters.

The page states 1–10% overall with 3–7% for pillars, 1–5% for hardening blends and 8–10% for detailed or sculptural work, and describes improved adhesion to containers and moulds, reduced cracking in pillar and moulded candles and added flexibility. Vybar Additive for Candle Making
The additive for coloured and container lines where the page's claimed effects — fragrance retention, smooth glossy surfaces, preventing mottling and sweating — are the defects you are fighting. The stated dose is set by wax: 0.5–1% for soy and coconut wax, 1–2% for paraffin, 1% recommended, added before fragrance and colour. For soy producers the packs line up neatly with batch sizes; the table counts 10 kg batches at 0.5%.

The page describes a high-gloss, polished appearance and a protective, dust-resistant layer "even after handling", which is why it appeals to lines that ship pillars in retail packaging or shoot product photography. Stated method: fully cooled candle, shake well, thin even layer, 10–15 minutes air-dry, optional second coat, ventilated space, dry fully before lighting. No coverage is stated, so measure millilitres per batch on your own line and cost it at ₹2.20 per ml.

The CSI principle
At production scale, an additive is a standing cost with a job description. If you can't name the defect it prevents, it shouldn't be on the batch sheet.
Every additive you keep costs rupees on every candle and adds a step where something can be forgotten. Every additive you remove after a clean control test simplifies the line for good. The best-run production floors have fewer additives, not more — and each one earns its place.

Batch records and quality checks for additive lines

A batch record is what turns an additive from a habit into a controlled input. It is also the only way to answer the question every growing candle business eventually faces: "this week's candles are different — what changed?" The fields below take under a minute per batch to fill in, and they are the minimum needed to trace an additive problem back to a cause.

The last row is the one that pays for the others. If your microcrystalline line records zero cracks for twelve weeks running, you have evidence that the additive is working — and a reason to run one control batch without it to see whether it is still needed. If the defect count creeps up while the additive line is unchanged, the cause is almost certainly elsewhere: wax delivery, workshop temperature, pour temperature or fragrance. Without the record, all you have is a feeling that "the candles aren't as good lately".

Keep one retained candle from every batch for at least as long as that batch is on sale, boxed and labelled. When a stockist reports a problem, burn the retained candle beside a fresh one from a recent batch. That single comparison resolves most complaints faster than any amount of speculation — and it tells you whether the problem is in the batch, in the storage, or in the customer's room.

Monthly consumption and reorder points

Additives should never be the thing that stops a production day. They are also the easiest thing to forecast — because they follow the wax.

Here is a worked example for an illustrative candle business running two lines: a soy container line pouring 60 kg of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks a month with Vybar at 0.5%, and a soy pillar line pouring 20 kg of Soy Pillar Wax a month with microcrystalline at 5%. Two lessons come out of that table. First, additives are 2.6% of the wax spend in this example — which is why running out of them is so frustrating: a ₹312 pack of Vybar can stop a line holding ₹6,000 bags of wax. Second, the monthly additive quantity is fully determined by the wax plan, so the reorder point is mechanical. A simple rule works: order additives in the same basket as the wax they will go into, and never let additive stock fall below the next full batch. For the soy line above, that means three 100 g packs of Vybar travel with every six 10 kg bags.

Don't warehouse a year of additives in an Indian summer. Every CSI additive is flat-priced or effectively flat between its two packs, so nothing on the listing rewards buying a year ahead, and opened slabs and powders stored near a hot melter or under a tin roof are a quality risk. Hold one to two months of additive stock, sealed, dry, away from heat and direct sun, first-in first-out. If your monthly volumes justify more, that is a WhatsApp quote — not a storeroom full of 100 g packs.

Standardise before you scale

The most expensive additive mistake in commercial production is not a wrong dose; it is recipe sprawl. A business with twelve scents that runs Vybar at 0.5% in six of them, 1% in four and none in two has created three production recipes for one wax — three sets of cups, three chances to mix them up and three times the testing every time the wax delivery changes. At 54 candles a batch, a mix-up is not one bad candle; it is a batch.

The fix is to standardise additives per base wax, not per scent. Choose one rate for the soy container line and prove it with your hardest scent — usually the darkest, heaviest or most heavily dyed one. If it works there, it will almost always be adequate for the lighter scents. Do the same for the pillar line with microcrystalline. When a single scent genuinely cannot work at the standard rate, that is a reason to question the scent in that wax, not to add a fourth recipe. Standardisation also makes supplier conversations shorter. "Vybar at 0.5% on 60 kg of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks a month, microcrystalline at 5% on 20 kg of Soy Pillar Wax" is a quote request CSI can price in one message, alongside the wax, wicks and jars it goes with. This one recommends the opposite: rule out the process cause, add only what a defect justifies, standardise it per wax, and remove it if a control batch performs as well — because a producer with a simple, repeatable line orders more wax, not fewer candles.

What additives are used in commercial candle making?
The common categories are blend waxes such as microcrystalline wax, polymer additives such as Vybar, fatty acids such as stearic acid, and surface finishes such as candle lacquer. CSI lists all four: Microcrystalline Wax Slab (stated 1–10%, 3–7% pillars), Vybar (stated 0.5–1% soy, 1–2% paraffin), Stearic Acid (no stated rate) and Candle Liquid Shiner. CSI does not list a UV inhibitor. Commercial producers should use only the additives a measured defect justifies.
How much Vybar do I need for a 10 kg batch of wax?
At CSI's stated rates, 50 g at 0.5% and 100 g at 1% for soy or coconut wax, and 100–200 g at 1–2% for paraffin. That costs ₹156, ₹312 or ₹624 at ₹3.12 per gram, or ₹2.87–₹11.48 per 200 g candle. How much microcrystalline wax do I add to pillar candle wax?
CSI's page states 3–7% for pillar candles300–700 g per 10 kg of wax — within an overall 1–10% range (1–5% for hardening blends, 8–10% for detailed or sculptural work). At ₹299 per kilo that is ₹89.70–₹209.30 per 10 kg batch, or ₹1.65–₹3.85 per 200 g pillar. Melt it thoroughly into the base wax and stir well before adding fragrance. Test 3% and 7% against a control in your mould.
Do additives increase candle production costs much?
Usually not by much. At stated rates they add ₹1.65–₹11.48 per 200 g candle. In an illustrative business pouring 60 kg of soy at Vybar 0.5% and 20 kg of pillar wax at microcrystalline 5% a month, additives cost ₹1,235 against ₹47,994 of wax — about 2.6%. Microcrystalline can even lower pillar wax cost when it replaces Soy Pillar Wax. The real cost of additives is process complexity, which is why standardising one rate per wax matters.
Which additive stops soy candles from frosting?
None of CSI's additive product pages makes a stated frosting claim. Vybar's page describes preventing mottling and sweating, which is a different defect. Frosting in soy is usually addressed through the process — pouring and cooling temperatures, workshop conditions and the wax itself — and is often cosmetic rather than a performance fault. When should additives be added during candle production?
Melt the base wax and any microcrystalline wax together until fully melted. Add Vybar to the melted wax before fragrance and colour — CSI's page states this. Then add fragrance at your wax's stated add temperature and stir for two minutes, add dye, and pour at the wax's stated pour temperature; Vybar's page says it does not change optimal pour temperatures. Candle lacquer is applied only after the candle has fully cooled.
