Which wick should I start with? A ladder, not a lookup. Write the specification before you melt anything
A candle throws scent from its melt pool, so every decision that governs how wide that pool gets, how much oil is dissolved in it, and how evenly that oil is distributed has already been made by the time you strike the match. There are exactly six of them, and a maker who writes all six down before opening a bag will beat a maker who improvises, every time — not because improvising is careless, but because an unrecorded batch cannot be repeated when it works.
Fill this sheet in first. It takes five minutes and it is the difference between a product and a lucky batch. Every figure in the right-hand column is either printed on a CSI product page or measured by you with a ruler and a thermometer — nothing here is a matter of taste.

Step 1 · Choose the grade for the headroom you need
CSI does not publish comparative burn-test data across its soy grades, and we will not invent a throw ranking to fill the gap. What the pages do publish is a fragrance ceiling, and that is the number that decides your upper limit. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 state up to 13% of total wax weight. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states up to 10%. Eco Soy CSI 400 does not publish a ceiling at all — it is a good, inexpensive container wax at ₹399.00/kg with a published fragrance-add window, but if you are designing a build around a specific load, ask for its maximum on WhatsApp rather than assuming one.
Here is the honest part. If your oil's page tops out at 10%, the 13% grades give you nothing extra you can use, and the cheaper 10% grade is the better commercial decision. At 200 g a jar, Eco Soy CSI 400 costs ₹79.80, CSI 464 costs ₹101.48, Luxury Soy Wax Chunks costs ₹119.80 and CSI 468 costs ₹130.00. Headroom you cannot use under the oil's own range is headroom you are paying for and leaving on the shelf. Buy the 13% grades when you have oils that allow 11–13%, or when you want the option later.

Step 2 · Set the governing load, not the maximum
Loads on CSI pages are stated as a percentage of wax weight, not of the finished candle. So 200 g of wax at 10% is 20 g of oil and a 220 g pour, not 22 g. Getting that convention right is worth more than any trick in this guide, because the two conventions differ by about a tenth of the oil you meant to add, and a tenth is roughly the difference makers spend months chasing.
Then apply the lower-of-two rule against your specific oil. The table below runs five CSI oils against the two ceiling tiers and gives the grams and the rupees per 200 g jar at the resulting load. Note the Autumn row: its page states 7–11% for candles, which is higher than CSI 464 allows — one of the few cases where the wax, not the oil, is the binding constraint.

Read the cost column before you fall in love with a fragrance. At the governing load, Woody Oud puts ₹90.62 of oil in a jar and Dark Vanilla puts ₹152.92 — a difference of about ₹62.30 per candle, which at 200 jars a season is real money. Neither is better at throwing. They are different scents at different prices, and the dearer one is dearer because of what is in it, not because it works harder in the pool.
Two oil-page facts belong in the specification as well. Vanillin content decides whether a white candle stays white: Dark Vanilla and Roasted Coffee both state vanillin in their base notes and warn about yellowing in light wax, while Sandalwood and Blue Ocean state 0% vanillin. And flashpoint — 203°C for Sandalwood, 143°C for Blue Ocean — is a transport and storage property, not the temperature at which an oil evaporates out of wax. It does not change your add temperature.
Step 3 · The pour: three temperatures and a two-minute stir
The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page publishes the full sequence, and it is worth following literally rather than approximately. If you are using Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 instead, the numbers are completely different — melting point 50–53°C and pour at 58–60°C — so do not carry a 100% soy routine across to it. Eco Soy CSI 400 asks for fragrance at 85°C inside an 80–90°C window, stirred gently for two minutes, then poured directly.
Step 4 · Wick for a full pool by hour three
Everything above decides how much fragrance is available. The wick decides how much of it is working at any moment, because scent leaves the liquid surface and nowhere else. The arithmetic is unforgiving: a 45 mm pool in a 65 mm jar is 15.90 cm² of a possible 33.18 cm², about 48% of the surface you designed and paid to fill with oil. Go up to a 75 mm jar and the full surface is 44.18 cm², so the same under-wicking costs you proportionally more.
CSI does not publish a wick-size-by-diameter chart on the wick pages, so the honest method is a ladder rather than a lookup. Pour three identical jars from the same melt, change only the wick, and read the pools at 60 minutes and 3 hours. Eco Candle Wicks come pre-tabbed in Thin (C1) at ₹5.90 and Thick (C2) at ₹9.44 each in the 100-wick packs, which makes a three-jar ladder cheap. The target is the smallest wick that still brings the pool to the jar wall by about the three-hour mark, with a steady flame, no soot on the glass and no large mushroom on the tip. Smallest matters: the next size up will also reach the wall, but it will run hotter, burn through your hours faster and can push a delicate oil into smelling harsh. A candle that reaches the wall at two hours and is half gone by the eighth is not a strong candle, it is a short one.

Step 5 · Cure it as part of the recipe, not as waiting
The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page sets the rule plainly: minimum 48 hours, ideally 1–2 weeks before burn testing. Several CSI fragrance oil pages give shorter figures — 24 to 48 hours or 48 to 72 hours for best scent throw — and both are true of different things. The short window is when a candle becomes fit to burn and judge provisionally. The long window is how much better it can still get. General soy container practice sits at 14 to 21 days by fragrance family, with heavy woods, ouds and gourmands wanting the long end and light citrus and aquatic oils settling sooner.
Cure conditions are part of the recipe too, and this is where Indian conditions diverge most from imported advice. Lids on, out of direct sunlight, in a room that stays roughly 25–30°C. Heat cycling is the real enemy: a terrace room that hits 40°C at three in the afternoon and falls to 28°C by night pushes oil towards the surface and the jar wall, and what beads on the top is load you paid for and can no longer burn. Through a Mumbai or Kochi monsoon, lids also keep damp air off the surface. A closed steel almirah in an inner room beats any shelf near a window.
Write the pour date on every lid as you close it. A batch whose age you cannot state is a batch you cannot diagnose later, and a 14-day rule you keep in your head is a 9-day rule in practice. Candle Care Stickers are ₹413.00 for 500 and double as the burn-instruction label customers actually need.
Step 6 · The release burn and the batch record
On day 14, take two jars from the batch. Burn one for three hours in a closed room with the fan and the AC off, then step outside for ten minutes and walk back in — that first moment through the door is the only honest reading you will get, because a nose sitting beside a candle stops registering it within minutes. Keep the second jar sealed as a reference, so that when a customer writes to you in January you still have an example of what the batch was like on release day.
Then write five lines down. This is a record, not a score: pour date, release date, pool diameter at 3 hours against the jar's inside diameter, flame and soot notes, and a plain verdict in your own words. Five lines per batch, kept in one notebook or one spreadsheet, is what turns a year of candle making into a formula sheet. It also means that when something does go wrong, the diagnosis takes an evening instead of a season.

Scaling to sixty jars without losing the throw
Sixty 200 g jars need 12 kg of wax and, at 8%, 960 g of oil. In CSI pack sizes that is a 10 kg bag of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹5,999.00 plus two 1 kg packs at ₹599.00 each — ₹7,197.00 — a 1 kg bottle of Woody Oud at ₹4,531.20, and a 100-pack of Eco Candle Wicks C1 at ₹590.00. Total ₹12,318.20, or ₹205.30 a jar before the container. That is above the theoretical ₹198.20 because pack sizes never land exactly on a batch: you finish with 40 spare wicks and 40 g of oil, which is the next test round already paid for.
Melt capacity is the first thing that breaks. Work back: customers want candles in hand a week before, dispatch and courier transit take their own days, day 14 is the release burn, and the pour is 14 days before that. Pouring in the third week of October means selling a candle that is eight days old, which is exactly the candle that produces a complaint about weak throw. And it is fair to say that delivery timelines are a live issue for some customers — one CSI reviewer asks plainly for quicker delivery dates — so build your own buffer rather than assuming a courier will absorb a late decision.
One last honest note about scale. Sixty jars at ₹205.30 in materials is ₹12,318.20, and the jar, the label, the box and the courier are all still to come. Strong hot throw does not come from spending more on any single line in that list — it comes from the six specification decisions, all of which are free to get right and expensive to get wrong. The cheapest of them, writing the pour date on the lid, costs nothing at all.
