Is coconut-soy wax better or worse for hot shipping? On published figures it is the one to prove first. Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 publishes a melting point of 50–53°C and a pour temperature of 58–60°C — the lowest working temperatures of any CSI container grade. Does a candle that melted in transit become unsafe? A soy candle that softened and re-set in its container is normally still burnable; the damage is cosmetic — a re-levelled top, frosting, a wet spot, a leaning wick. Check that the wick is upright and centred before you relight, and replace anything that set at an angle.
The honest part first: you are not buying heat immunity
You describe the problem precisely, which already puts you ahead of most makers who ask this: parcels sit. They sit in a closed van in a car park in Nagpur at two in the afternoon, they sit on a hub floor under a tin roof in Ahmedabad, they sit on a two-wheeler box in Chennai while the rider finishes four other drops. None of that is measured by the weather forecast. A closed metal box standing in sun runs hotter than the air around it, and a cardboard carton inside that box holds the heat it has absorbed for hours after the vehicle moves into shade. That is the environment your candle has to survive, and you cannot buy a wax that is indifferent to it.
So the useful question is not “which wax survives heat”. It is “where do I buy the most margin per rupee”. There are four places, and only one of them is the wax: the wax and any hardening blend, the fragrance load, the format and container, and the dispatch decision. Ranked by what they cost you, the order is almost the reverse of what most sellers try first. Changing your dispatch day is free. Changing your container is a packaging decision you already control. Dropping a candle from 13% to 8% fragrance saves you ₹30.68 a candle at British Rose 1 kg pricing and makes the candle harder at the same time. Changing the wax is the only lever on the list that reliably costs more per kilo.
It matters to be clear about what actually fails, because “melted in transit” covers several different outcomes with different costs. A candle whose top has softened and re-set flat is cosmetically changed and still perfectly burnable. A candle whose surface liquefied and re-set at an angle, with the wick leaning into the wall, is a return. A candle that pulled away from the glass on cooling looks like a fault and is usually just a wet spot — contact between wax and glass broken by a temperature change. A high-load candle that beaded oil in the van arrives greasy and stains the box (the sweating guide covers that mechanism in full). And a pillar or moulded shape that slumped is simply gone: there is no container holding it, so it re-sets as whatever shape gravity chose.
One thing you do not need to worry about: the fragrance burning off in the van. Flashpoint is a transport and safety property, not the temperature at which an oil evaporates out of wax — the British Rose page gives a flashpoint of 192°C, and a parcel at 50°C is nowhere near it. What long hot storage can cost you is the lightest top notes off an uncapped candle, which is an argument for lids, not for a different wax.

Before recommending anything, here is every heat-relevant figure CSI publishes on the grades a seller like you would consider, with the gaps marked as gaps. We would rather you saw the gaps than filled them with a number from a US blog describing a different manufacturer’s wax.

Read the third column again, because it contains the one genuinely counter-intuitive answer on this page. Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 is the grade most Indian brands reach for when they want a premium finish, and it is the grade whose page publishes the lowest working temperatures: a melting point of 50–53°C and a pour temperature of 58–60°C. A wax that pours at 58°C is a wax that flows with very little heat. That is exactly what makes it pour beautifully and set ultra-smooth — and exactly why, on published figures alone, it is the grade to be most careful with if your parcels bake. This is not an argument against coconut-soy; it is an argument for testing coconut-soy in a hot box before you commit a summer collection to it.
For the pure soy grades, be equally clear-eyed: CSI does not publish a softening or slump temperature for CSI 464 or Luxury Soy Wax Chunks, and CSI 400’s melting point is not published. We are not going to invent one. What we can tell you is what the pages do say — 464 lists a 60-month shelf life in cool, dry storage and asks you to avoid direct sunlight and moisture; 468 lists the same shelf life and asks you to keep it sealed. Those are storage instructions for the raw wax in your workshop, not a promise about a finished candle in a van.
If you ship at volume, the missing figures are worth a message rather than a guess. Ask on WhatsApp for whatever technical documentation exists for the grade you use, along with MSDS and IFRA paperwork for your oils. Where a figure is not published we will say so rather than send you a number that was never measured for that grade.
Measure your own worst case before you change anything
The whole decision turns on one figure nobody has published for you: how hot the inside of your parcel gets on your worst route. A seller shipping Bengaluru to Bengaluru in September has a different problem from one shipping Mumbai to Jodhpur in May. Two days and about ₹1,292.81 of materials will tell you which problem you have, and that number includes a Pen Thermometer at ₹354.00 you will use for every batch afterwards — roughly 8 candles’ worth of wax, oil and wick.
Two details make the results trustworthy. First, pour all the test candles from one melt on one afternoon; batch-to-batch variation is real and you are trying to measure heat, not your own consistency. Second, run the test in the month you are worried about. A hot-box test in December tells you nothing about May in Ahmedabad, and by the time you find that out you have already shipped the collection.
Three ways to make the candle itself harder
1. The grade you start from
On published figures there is only one clear statement to make: CSI 468 publishes the lowest working temperatures of any container grade CSI sells, so if your parcels reach the top of the ladder above, it is the grade that needs proving first. For the pure soy grades the honest position is that you must test. CSI 464 at ₹507.40/kg and Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at ₹599.00/kg are both sold as container waxes with excellent glass adhesion and low frosting; neither page gives you a slump temperature. At the series unit of 200 g of wax, the Chunks cost ₹18.32 more per candle than CSI 464 and CSI 468 costs ₹28.52 more — 28%% on the wax line, or ₹2,852.00 across a hundred candles. Those are small enough numbers that you should choose on the test result, not on the price.
Two grades come off the list for a pan-India summer seller regardless of price. Soy Pillar Wax at ₹600.00/kg is sold for pillars, moulds and designer candles — it is made to release from a mould, and a free-standing shape has nothing to hold it if it softens. And a wax with no published figures at all gives you nothing to plan with, which is why Premium Coconut Soy Wax at ₹920.00/kg is a poor starting point for this particular problem even though it is a perfectly good wax for a maker who has already tested it.
2. A hardening blend
Microcrystalline Wax Slab is the one CSI product whose page explicitly gives a blending percentage for hardness: 1–5% for hardening blends, 3–7% for pillar candles and 8–10% for detailed and sculptural work, and the page lists hard, high-temperature candle blends among its uses. Its melting point is given as high, varying by batch — so treat the exact figure as unpublished and confirm the behaviour in your own test. The arithmetic is the surprise: at ₹299.00/kg the slab is cheaper than every soy grade on this page, so a 200 g candle blended at 5% — 190 g of CSI 464 and 10 g of microcrystalline — costs ₹99.40 against ₹101.48 for plain CSI 464. You save ₹2.08 a candle, about 2.1%, or ₹208.40 across a hundred.
That is not a free lunch, and you should not treat it as one. A blend changes the burn, the finish and often the wick you need, so it has to go through the full parcel test and a burn test before it goes into a collection. Start at 1%, not 5%, and work up only if you need to. Beeswax Pellets at ₹800.00/kg are the other classic hardening component — in general candle-making practice beeswax is the harder, higher-melting partner in a soy blend — and there the money runs the other way: 180 g of CSI 464 with 20 g of beeswax is ₹107.33 a candle, ₹5.85 more than plain CSI 464 (5.8%), or ₹585.20 across a hundred. Beeswax also carries its own honey note, which you may or may not want under your fragrance.
Vybar Additive is the third option and the one to be most careful about. Its page says it is compatible with soy, paraffin, coconut and blends, gives 0.5–2% of wax weight with the lower end for soy, asks you to add it to the melted wax before fragrance and colour, and claims improved fragrance retention, smoother surfaces and less mottling and sweating. At ₹3.12 per gram, 2 g in a 200 g candle brings the wax-and-additive line to ₹106.71, ₹5.23 more than plain wax. Our position across this series has not changed: test it in a controlled batch, and do not use it to paper over a dispatch or packing fault (the Vybar and stearic comparison covers the additive question in its own right). Single-pour soys are sold as needing no additives at all.
3. The fragrance load
This is the lever that pays you to pull it. Fragrance oil is liquid at room temperature, and in general candle-making practice a heavily loaded soy candle is a softer candle that is more likely to bead oil in heat. If you are running 13% because the wax ceiling allows it, a summer line at 8% is a harder candle and a cheaper one: 26 g of British Rose against 16 g on a 200 g candle is a saving of ₹30.68, 17% of the whole wax-and-oil cost, and ₹3,068.00 across a hundred candles. Remember the ceilings are stated as a percentage of wax weight, and where a wax ceiling and an oil page’s own usage range disagree, the lower figure governs.

Look at the two rows with a minus sign. Together, blending at 5% and bringing a 13% line down to 8% take ₹3,276.40 out of a hundred candles while making every one of them harder. That is the shape of this whole page: the changes that help most in a hot van are not the ones that cost the most.
Format and container decide more than the grade does
Wax that softens inside a sealed container has nowhere to go. It re-levels, it cools, and unless the parcel was lying on its side it looks close to what it looked like when you packed it. The same wax with no walls around it is a different story. This is why format is the highest-leverage decision on the page for a seller shipping pan-India, and why the answer to “which wax should I use” often turns out to be “the wax you already use, in a different container, dispatched on a different day”.

The tin deserves a fair hearing in both directions, because it is the format most often recommended for hot shipping and it has real drawbacks. Metal conducts, so a tin reaches the parcel temperature faster than glass does — it is not insulation. What it gives you is that it cannot shatter, it re-sets flat, and a press lid holds the wax in even if the box is turned over. The 85 gram tin measures 6 cm by 4 cm on the page and the 135 gram tin 7.5 cm by 5 cm. Against a lidded glass jar it also costs less: ₹70.80 against ₹94.40, a difference of ₹23.60 a unit, which is larger than most of the wax decisions on this page. One verified buyer notes that some tins arrived with small dents and that the lid can be hard to open once a candle is set in it — worth knowing before you standardise a whole line on them.
Set against the candle itself, the container is where your money actually goes. At the series unit a 200 g candle carries ₹156.47 of wax, oil and wick; add a lidded glass jar and it is ₹250.87, add an 85 g tin instead and it is ₹227.27 for a smaller candle. The dispatch decisions that cost nothing
Heat damage is cumulative and it happens while a parcel is stationary. A shipment that moves steadily through a network spends a few hours in each vehicle; a shipment that arrives at a hub on Friday evening in a city where the sorting slows over the weekend can spend two full afternoons in the same place. That is the difference between a candle that softened once and re-set, and a candle that softened, re-set, softened again and finally beaded oil. None of that is visible on a tracking page.
So the rules worth adopting are dull and free. Dispatch early in the week so a parcel is unlikely to be warehoused over a weekend. Avoid dispatching into the two or three days either side of a public holiday in the destination city. In March to June, hand over in the morning rather than the afternoon, so the first leg happens before the day peaks. Keep finished stock off a top-floor room and away from a west-facing wall — a great deal of summer damage happens in the seller’s own storage before the courier ever touches the box. And put a short printed card in the parcel asking the customer not to leave the candle in a parked car and to let it stand upright for a few hours before lighting; it costs nothing and it turns a cosmetic complaint into a piece of care advice.
Seasonally, be precise about when the risk actually sits. The hard months are March to June across most of the country, with the pre-monsoon weeks the worst. Monsoon itself changes the problem rather than solving it: temperatures drop, humidity rises, cartons soften and labels lift. The festive peak is a different animal — Diwali falls on 8 November 2026, when the weather is on your side but the courier network is at its most congested, so parcels sit for longer at ambient temperatures that no longer threaten the wax. For that peak, the binding constraint is cure time, not heat: candles poured by about mid-October finish a 14 to 21 day cure with days in hand for transit (how early brands should order for Diwali covers the ordering side).
On courier charges, two verified CSI customers have said in public reviews that delivery costs are high enough to limit how much they order, and one asks for faster delivery timelines. We do not publish delivery times or shipping thresholds, so the honest advice is the boring kind: consolidate your raw-material orders into fewer, larger consignments, ask for a bulk quotation on WhatsApp before you split an order across three deliveries, and plan wax stock ahead of the festive rush rather than reordering into it.

Setting the expectation that a soy candle is a natural wax that responds to heat, and that a re-set top is not a fault, prevents a large share of summer complaints. You sell across India, which means you are not solving one problem — you are solving a Chennai problem, a Jaipur problem and a Shillong problem with the same catalogue. The practical route is to keep one base wax for everything you can, and to treat the hot-route lines as a separate specification rather than a separate business.

If you want the single-sentence version: stay on CSI 464, drop the summer line to 8% fragrance, move the hot routes into tins or clip-tops, dispatch early in the week, and spend ₹1,292.81 once on a parcel test before you spend anything per kilo. If the test says the candle still fails, add 1–5% microcrystalline and test again — and if it still fails after that, the honest answer is that the route is too hot for a soy container candle in May, and the right decision is to sell those cities a different product or a different month, not to keep buying a more expensive wax.
Two comparisons will help you keep perspective on the money. Moving every candle from CSI 464 to CSI 468 costs ₹2,852.00 across a hundred candles; a single re-shipped order, with the courier charge, the replacement materials and the customer-service time, generally costs more than that. But so does a year of paying the difference on thousands of candles for a change that never fixed anything. The test is what separates the two, and it is ₹1,292.81.
