I Want a Soy Wax That Works with Floral, Woody and Gourmand Fragrances — How Many Fragrance Types Should I Test Before Approving the Wax?
Aktie
Why two per family? One oil cannot tell you whether a problem belongs to the family or to that oil. Two can. Families are smell descriptions, not chemistries.
How do I keep the cost down? Screen every oil in 85 g Golden Tins (2 per oil per wax, ₹3,455.60), then take only the hardest oil per family into 200 g jars (₹4,588.12).
What do I approve? A list of oils that passed in that wax at that load. Every new oil gets a two-candle CONFIRM before launch. See the decision rule.
At least two oils per family you sell — and approve oils, not families
If your collection covers floral, woody and gourmand fragrances, test at least two different oils in each family before you approve a wax — six oils for three families — and add any bestseller that is not already among them. Then approve the wax for the oils that passed, not for the families. That last part matters more than the number. A fragrance family is a description of how something smells. Two florals can be built from completely different materials, in different proportions, and behave very differently in the same wax. One floral passing tells you about that floral.
Why two and not one? Because one oil per family cannot tell you whether a result belongs to the family or to the oil. If your only gourmand sweats, you do not know whether gourmands are a problem in that wax or whether that one oil is. A second oil in the family turns a single anecdote into a comparison. Why not five? Because the screen's job is to find the oils that need attention cheaply, not to prove the wax universal — no number of oils does that. The plan below spends most of its money on small screening candles and only takes the hardest oil per family into a full-size burn.
The example uses two waxes with the same published ceiling, so the load question does not decide it: CSI's product page states up to 13% for Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and up to 13% for CSI 468. Everything else — how each oil sets, sweats, holds its colour and throws in each wax — is unknown until tested. CSI publishes no throw, compatibility or discolouration data for any oil, and this page will not invent any. What to test across fragrances before committing to one wax sets out the test lines; this page is about how many oils, which ones, and how to spend the test budget.
Which oils to put in the plan
Choose oils that spread the risk inside each family rather than oils that are similar. Within each pair below, the two oils differ in character and in price, so a wax that passes both has been asked two different questions. The picks are real CSI oils with in-stock 15 g sizes. They are not ranked by throw or compatibility — CSI publishes no such data — and your own collection's oils should replace them wherever you sell different ones.
| Family | Oil | Screening size | Production rate | Oil per 200 g candle |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Floral | Gardenia Fragrance Oil | ₹105.02 / 15 g | ₹4.33/g | ₹69.31 |
| Floral | Raat Ki Rani (Night-Blooming Jasmine) Fragrance Oil | ₹130.00 / 15 g | ₹6.77/g | ₹108.38 |
| Woody | Woody Oud Fragrance Oil | ₹93.22 / 15 g | ₹4.53/g | ₹72.50 |
| Woody | Saffron Cedarwood Fragrance Oil | ₹103.84 / 15 g | ₹6.87/g | ₹109.88 |
| Gourmand | Dark Vanilla Fragrance Oil | ₹130.00 / 15 g | ₹7.65/g | ₹122.34 |
| Gourmand | Roasted Coffee Fragrance Oil | ₹93.22 / 15 g | ₹3.74/g | ₹59.81 |
Look at the last column before anything else. At 8% in a 200 g candle the oil costs from ₹59.81 to ₹122.34 depending on which of these six you pour — a spread of ₹62.53 per candle. The wax difference between the two candidates is ₹6.99 a candle (Chunks ₹110.22, CSI 468 ₹117.21 at their 5 kg rates). Across a mixed collection, your oil choices move cost far more than the wax does, which is one reason not to choose a wax by testing only your cheapest oils.
| Your collection | Minimum oils in the screen | Then add | Full-size burn |
|---|---|---|---|
| One family (e.g. florals only) | 3 different oils | Every bestseller | The hardest 1–2 from the screen |
| Three families: floral, woody, gourmand | 6 (2 per family) | Every bestseller not already in | The hardest 1 per family |
| Five families (add fresh, fruity) | 10 (2 per family) | Every bestseller not already in | The hardest 1 per family |
| 20+ SKUs across families | 2 per family + top sellers | Any oil above 10% load | Hardest per family + all top sellers |
Why oils in the same family behave differently in one wax
In general perfumery and candle-making knowledge, a fragrance oil is a mixture of aroma materials, often with a carrier, and two oils with the same family name can share very few of them. Some materials are light and volatile, some heavy and slow; some are polar, some not; some are commonly associated with colour change over time. How well a soy wax holds a given mixture through cooling and cure — whether it stays bound or starts to sweat, whether the surface changes, how readily it releases from the melt pool — depends on that mixture as much as on the wax. These are mechanisms commonly described, not CSI measurements for any oil.
That is why families are a useful way to spread a test and a poor way to conclude one. Testing two florals that smell different makes it likely you have sampled two different chemistries. But passing them does not license a third floral you have not tested, because its chemistry is unknown. The practical consequence is a rule you can apply forever: every new oil gets a short confirmation in the approved wax before it is sold, whatever its family.
Gourmand oils are often singled out in candle-making discussions because vanilla-type notes are commonly associated with darkening over time. That is a general observation, not something CSI publishes for any particular oil, and it is exactly why the gourmand pair in the screen gets a shelf candle checked at 14 days under the same light as the others. When a wax does well with lavender and poorly with vanilla is the next post: it handles the case where one family fails and the others pass.
The two-stage plan, candle by candle
Stage 1 is a screen, sized to be cheap: every oil in both waxes, two 85 g tins each (one shelf, one burn), at 8% — 6.8 g of oil and 78.2 g of wax per tin. That is 24 tins. Stage 2 is the full test, sized to be convincing: the hardest oil from each family goes into two 200 g White Matte jars per wax (16 g oil + 184 g wax), with one burned to the end of its life. That is 12 candles. Candle counts are labelled working practice.
| Line | Floral 1 | Floral 2 | Woody 1 | Woody 2 | Gourmand 1 | Gourmand 2 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sweating / oil on surface, 7 & 14 days | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ |
| Frosting 0–3 at 14 days | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ |
| Colour vs unscented tin, 0–3 | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ |
| Top finish 0–3 | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ |
| Cold throw, blind 0–5 | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ |
| Burn: soot / mushroom / pool | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ |
| Screen result | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ |
| Stage 2? (worst in family) | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ | ___ |
The sheet is per wax, so you will fill two. Lay them side by side at the end. A wax that is clean across all six columns is a strong candidate. A wax that fails one column has a problem with that oil, not necessarily with that family — check the other oil in the family before drawing a wider conclusion. The objective comparison protocol covers blinding and fixed-room scoring for the throw lines. If several oils need a different wick in one wax, whether repeated wick testing should influence your wax choice is the next question; if throw is the deciding line, evaluating cold and hot throw before a bulk carton and the wax properties behind strong hot throw go deeper.

Stage 2 is priced with the first oil of each family as the example pick; if the screen picks the other oil, the top-up changes by the price difference. Two 15 g packs of each oil cover the screen with 1.44 g to spare, so Stage 1 never needs a 50 g bottle. The alternative — skipping the screen and putting all six oils straight into two 200 g candles per wax — costs ₹8,142.32 in materials and still burns only two candles per oil. The screen buys more information per rupee, and the full-size money goes where the screen says it is needed.

The decision rule: when the wax is approved, and for what
| Result | What it means | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| All six pass the screen; all Stage 2 oils pass | Strong candidate for the collection | Approve for the six oils; CONFIRM each other oil before launch |
| One oil fails, its family partner passes | An oil problem, not a family one | Approve the wax; treat that oil separately (5416) |
| Both oils in a family fail in one wax only | That wax may not suit that family | Use the other wax's result; consider if one wax can still carry the range |
| Both oils in a family fail in both waxes | Load, process or the oils themselves | Test a lower load before blaming either wax |
Then buy the wax and size the bag. If Chunks is approved for the collection, two 5 kg bags (₹5,990.00) are ₹9.00 cheaper than one 10 kg bag (₹5,999.00) for the same 10 kg. If CSI 468 is approved, the 5 kg (₹3,185.00) and 10 kg (₹6,370.00) bags cost the same per kilo, so the choice is storage and cash. Buy the six oils at the sizes that match your sales — and remember that per-gram price breaks above 100 g are rare: of these six, the 1 kg pack saves 4.2% for Roasted Coffee, 3.2% for Raat Ki Rani, 3.2% for Dark Vanilla, 1.4% for Saffron Cedarwood per gram against the 100 g pack, and nothing for Gardenia or Woody Oud. The qualification test turns this oil list into the approved-material record.

CANDLEMAKINGSUPPLIESINDIA supplies raw materials, not finished candles. We sell both waxes and all six oils in this plan, and we publish no throw, compatibility, composition or discolouration data for any of them. So this page does not tell you which wax holds which family better; it gives you the smallest test that finds out, and recommends fewer oils than we could sell you.
