The rule, and where bigger packs really are cheaper

The first mistake is buying your core lines small: jars in fives, oil in 100g bottles, wax a kilo at a time. It feels cautious. The second is buying uncertain lines big: a kilo of a scent you have smelled only in the bottle, a 100g dye before you know your shade, five moulds for a product nobody has ordered. The rule that avoids both is simple. Buy in bulk what goes into every candle and has already passed a burn test. Buy small what is still a question. Then check the price ladder, because on some lines a bigger pack is cheaper per unit and on others it is not.

Read the two halves together. Buying every core line small costs about ₹2,819 a month — almost all of it on jars — plus the time spent reordering. Buying a single untested scent in a kilo risks more than that in one bottle. So the bulk decision is about certainty, not discounts: when you are sure a line will be used, the bigger pack is never worse; when you are not, the small pack is insurance.

The bulk list: the lines in every candle

A home producer's bulk list is short on purpose. Standardising on one wax, one jar and one wick is what makes bulk buying safe: the burn test you ran last month still applies, the wick still fits the jar, and a bag opened today behaves like the bag opened last week.

Two small-value lines also belong on the bulk list, because they go into every candle and running out stops a pour. Candle Wick Stickers are currently listed as 40-sticker sheets at ₹100 (the 100-sticker sheet is sold out), so a month is five sheets. A Candle Care Stickers roll of 500 (1 inch) at ₹413 lasts well over two months; the 1,000 roll is a different size (1.5 inch) at ₹699, so choose on label size, not unit price.

The small list: tests, colour, moulds and new jars

Everything on the small list shares one feature: you do not yet know whether you will use it again. The pack size is set by the test, not by the month's production.

Notice what is not on the small list: a separate test wax. Test jars should be poured from the same bag of Luxury Soy Wax Chunks as production, so the only thing that changes is the thing you are testing. The same logic keeps additives off the list until a burn test shows a problem they solve — Vybar states 0.5–1% for soy, so a 50g pack at ₹156 treats 5 to 10 kg of wax, more than enough to find out whether it helps.

Fragrance oil: the line that graduates from small to bulk

Fragrance oil is the only line that belongs on both lists. A new scent is a 15g sniff or a 50g test; a scent your customers reorder is a bulk line. When to move it depends on two numbers: candles sold a month, and how the price per gram falls. At 16g of oil per 200g candle, a 1 kg bottle covers 62 candles — so a scent selling about 60 candles a month uses a kilo a month, and one selling 30 uses a 500g bottle a month.

The pattern is the same on all three and worth remembering. The big drop is from 15g to 50g or 100g — Lavender's 15g bottle costs about 30% more per gram than its 100g — so a 15g bottle is for smelling, never for pouring. From 100g to 1 kg the saving is real but modest, from 3.3% on Lavender to 10.3% on British Rose. That means the 1 kg bottle is justified by certainty and convenience more than by price: buy it when the scent sells steadily, not because the kilo looks cheaper. A costed 180-candle month of home production

The example is a home producer pouring 180 × 200g candles a month in one jar, three proven scents at 60 candles each, and testing two new scents, one colour and a pillar line on the side. Wax and oil carry a 3% planning allowance for spills and residue; that is a planning figure, not a measured loss.

Inside each finished candle the materials are: wax ₹110.22 (184g at ₹599/kg), wick ₹9.44, jar ₹29.50, wick sticker ₹2.50 and care label ₹0.83 (₹413 ÷ 500) — ₹152.48 before fragrance. Add the oil and the three candles cost ₹236.02 in Lavender, ₹212.29 in Roasted Coffee and ₹201.57 in British Rose. The small list is not in those numbers, and it should not be: it is research spending, and a home business that stops doing it stops adding scents.

Space, storage and safety at home

A month of home production is seven 5 kg bags of wax, two cartons of jars, three 1 kg bottles of oil and, by the end of the month, up to 180 candles curing on shelves. None of it is dangerous handled sensibly, but hot wax, heated fragrance and glass in a family home deserve a routine. When a small line becomes a bulk line

The small list should not stay the same for ever. Each line has a trigger that moves it into bulk, and each trigger is something you can observe, not a feeling that the business is "ready". When a trigger fires, move that one line and nothing else.

The jar row carries a lesson of its own. Several CSI jar styles, including the matte glass jars, are listed only in 5- and 10-packs at the same ₹70.80 a jar, so "bulk" on those lines is a WhatsApp question rather than a checkout option.
