Quick answers — read this first
Does 10% guarantee strong hot throw in soy wax? No. Ten per cent is the upper limit on Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464's page and the top of the stated soy range on many CSI oil pages. A ceiling describes how much oil the wax was formulated to hold, not how much of it reaches the room. Pool size, cure, add temperature and the oil itself decide that.

Should I push past 10% to fix it? Not on CSI 464 — 10% is the figure its page states. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 state up to 13%, so a grade change buys headroom, but only if your oil's own page allows it too. Where the two differ, the lower figure governs.

What is the single most common reason a 10% candle smells weak? It is usually read too early. Soy throw keeps building; the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for a minimum 48 hours and says ideally 1–2 weeks before burn testing, and 14–21 days is standard practice for soy container candles. A day-three verdict is not a verdict.

Could my 10% actually be something else? Often, yes. Ten per cent of the finished candle is 11.1% of the wax; a 1 g kitchen scale on a 20 g dose is ±5% of the dose; and oil left clinging in the beaker can turn 20 g into 18.5 g, or 9.25%. Weigh it back before you blame the wax.
The short answer
First, verify the number: 10% of wax weight on a 200 g jar is 20 g. Ten per cent of the finished candle is 22.2 g, which is 11.1% of the wax — above what the CSI 464 page allows.
Then accept where you are: at CSI 464's stated 10% you have no dose left to give. The remaining dials are pool size, cure, add temperature, stirring and the oil itself.
Then prove it in four jars: one control, one wick up, one oil swap, one split melt — ₹674.96 of materials, scored on day 14 and again on day 21.

Straight answer
I am already at 10% fragrance oil and the hot throw is still weak — what am I doing wrong?
Almost certainly nothing dramatic, and almost certainly not one thing. Start with the number itself: on Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 the page states a load of up to 10% of total wax weight, so you are not under-dosing — you are sitting exactly on the ceiling, with nothing left to add. Check that it really is 10% of the wax and not 10% of the finished candle (that would be 11.1% of the wax, above the stated figure) and that the oil actually went in: a 1 g kitchen scale on a 20 g dose is worth ±5%, and 1.5 g left in the beaker turns 20 g into 9.25%. Then check the oil's own page, because many CSI oils state 6–10% for soy candles — at 10% you are at the top of both limits at once, and the lower of the two always governs. After that, the dose is finished as a lever and four others remain. Cure is the biggest: the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for at least 48 hours and says ideally 1–2 weeks, while 14–21 days is standard practice for soy container candles — a candle judged on day three is judged too soon. Pool size is next: a 50 mm pool in a 70 mm jar is 19.63 cm² of evaporating surface against 38.48 cm², or 51%, and the fragrance is leaving from that surface, not from the rest of the jar. Heat is third: the Chunks page asks for fragrance at 80–90°C with a slow two-minute stir, and oil stirred into wax that has already cooled towards pouring temperature disperses badly. Fourth is the oil: not every fragrance in any supplier's range is built for maximum candle projection, and some CSI oils are written up for perfumery rather than for throw. Test them one at a time, four jars to a round, and read the result on day 14 — not on day two, when you can still smell the pot.
One line: At 10% on CSI 464 you are on the ceiling, so stop adjusting the dose — verify the weighing, then work the cure, the pool, the heat and the oil, one jar-set at a time.

Before anything else: is your 10% actually 10%?

You are troubleshooting a candle on the strength of a number. Check the number first — it is the cheapest test on this page and it fails more often than makers expect.

Every CSI wax page states its load the same way: as a percentage of total wax weight. On a 200 g jar, 10% means 20 g of fragrance oil poured into 200 g of wax, giving a 220 g pour. That is the only definition used anywhere on this page, and it is worth writing on the wall above your scales, because three of the four ways a 10% recipe quietly stops being 10% start with a different definition.

The first is the convention itself. If you took 10% of the finished candle, you worked out 10% of 222 g and weighed 22.2 g into 200 g of wax. Against wax weight that is 11.1%, which is above the figure the CSI 464 page states. Over a ceiling the surplus does not become extra throw; general practice is that oil the wax cannot bind separates — it beads on the top, wets the wick, and in a hot Indian room it sits as a film rather than evaporating from the pool. A candle can smell weaker at 11.1% than at 9%, which is the most counter-intuitive thing in this whole subject.

The second is resolution. A 1 g kitchen scale reading 20 g is honest to about ±1 g, which on this dose is ±5% of the oil. Two jars from the same batch can be 9.5% and 10.5% and you will never know which one you sniffed. Weigh to 0.1 g. CSI's Candle Making Weighing Scale is ₹354.00 and stock on it is thin at the moment; any 0.1 g jeweller's scale does the same job.

The third is transfer loss. Oil weighed into a beaker and then tipped into the melt leaves a film behind. If 1.5 g of a 20 g dose stays in the beaker, the wax received 18.5 g — 9.25% — and you recorded 10%. Weigh the oil directly into the melt on a tared scale, or scrape the beaker with a Silicone Spatula at ₹175.82.

The fourth is sequencing. Oil added to a large pot and then poured out over ten minutes does not stay evenly distributed if the stir was short: the first jars and the last jars differ. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page is specific about this — add fragrance at 80–90°C and stir slowly for two full minutes. Two minutes is longer than it feels.

Trusting a percentage you have never weighed back. Take one finished jar off the shelf, weigh it, subtract the weight of the empty jar and the wick, and compare that with the wax and oil you believe went in. If the candle weighs 214 g when your recipe says 220 g, six grams went somewhere — usually as residue in the pitcher, occasionally as oil left in the beaker, and the throw you are judging is not the throw of the recipe you wrote. Do this once a month on one jar and the whole problem stops being mysterious.

Where 10% sits on your wax's page — and on your oil's page

There are two limits in every candle, and most makers have only read one of them.

The wax has a stated maximum and the fragrance oil has a stated range, and they are set by different people for different reasons. The wax figure describes how much oil the wax was formulated to hold in solution without seeping. The oil figure is the supplier's stated usage range for that fragrance in that format. Where the two disagree, the lower figure governs — always, and without exception.

On Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 the page states up to 10%. That is why this question exists: you are on the ceiling, not below it, and the usual advice to add another two points is not available to you. On Luxury Soy Wax Chunks the page states up to 13% of total wax weight, with 8% as a starting point, 10% as the recommended figure and 13% as the maximum to be burn-tested thoroughly. Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 also states up to 13%. Eco Soy CSI 400 does not publish a load figure at all — we will not guess one, so ask on WhatsApp before you dose it.

Now read your oil. Many CSI oil pages state 6–10% of total wax weight for soy candles — that is the figure on the Lavender, Roasted Coffee and Dark Vanilla pages. Jasmine states up to 10% for soy. Autumn states 7–11% for candles and describes itself as medium to strong. Cinnamon Vanilla states up to 13%. If you are pouring Lavender at 10% in CSI 464 you are simultaneously at the top of the wax's range and the top of the oil's range, which is a perfectly legitimate place to be and also a dead end for the dose lever.

THE GOVERNING NUMBER
Write the governing figure on the batch card before you melt anything: wax ceiling, oil range, and the lower of the two circled. A maker pouring Lavender in CSI 464 has a governing figure of 10%. A maker pouring Cinnamon Vanilla in Luxury Soy Wax Chunks has a governing figure of 13%, and genuinely does have dose headroom left. The same 10% recipe is a ceiling in one case and a mid-range dose in the other, and the two makers should be troubleshooting completely different things.
Treating the ceiling as a target for every scent. Heavy gourmands and woody-oriental oils often read as loud at 8%; light citrus and aquatic oils frequently need every point they are allowed and still read as quiet, because the volatile top notes that make them pleasant also leave the pool quickly. Pushing a citrus to 10% and a vanilla to 10% because 10% is the number on the wall gives you an overdosed vanilla and a citrus that is still not loud. Dose by oil, and record the dose per scent, not per brand.

At the ceiling, the wick is the biggest dial you have left

Hot throw leaves the candle from the surface of the liquid pool. Everything else in the jar is storage.

This is the mechanism that makes the dose lever feel so disappointing. Fragrance evaporates out of molten wax, so the rate at which a burning candle scents a room is governed by how much molten surface there is and how warm it runs. Doubling the dose in a jar with a small pool mostly buries more oil in wax that never melts.

The arithmetic is unforgiving because area goes with the square of the diameter. In a 70 mm jar, a full pool is 38.48 cm². A pool that stops 10 mm short of the glass on each side is 50 mm across and covers 19.63 cm² — about 51% of the surface. You did not halve the fragrance in the candle, but you roughly halved the surface it can leave from. That gap dwarfs the difference between 8% and 10% in almost every jar we have ever been sent a photograph of.

Measure it rather than eyeballing it. Burn one jar for three hours in a still room, then lay a steel ruler across the top and read the widest part of the liquid, edge to edge. Photograph it with the ruler in shot and write the number on the batch card. If the pool is short, move one step up the wick ladder — Eco Candle Wicks come in Thin (C1) at ₹5.90 each and Thick (C2) at ₹9.44 each in 100-packs, and CSI does not publish a diameter table per wick, so this has to be a test rather than a lookup. There is a limit in the other direction, and it is worth stating plainly because it costs money: a wick that is too large does not keep improving throw. It runs the pool too hot, burns the candle down quickly, mushrooms, soots the glass and can scorch the fragrance it is meant to be carrying. A full pool by hour three or four is the target. A full pool in ninety minutes with a 15 mm-deep puddle is an over-wicked candle, not a well-scented one. Pool depth is worth watching too — 6–12 mm is the commonly cited working band in general candle-making practice.

Cure: the fortnight most 10% candles are never given

A soy candle on day three is not a finished product. It is a wet draft of one.

This is the most common single answer to the question in the title, and it is free. Soy container candles keep changing after the pour. The wax continues to set and rearrange; the fragrance distributes through it and binds; the surface stops giving off the loose oil that makes day-one cold throw so flattering. General practice for soy container candles is 14–21 days before you judge hot throw, with the longer end for heavy vanilla, amber and woody-oriental blends.

CSI's own pages sit either side of that. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for a minimum of 48 hours and says ideally 1–2 weeks before burn testing. Several fragrance oil pages give shorter figures — 48 to 72 hours is common — because that is genuinely enough to test a candle and know it works. The two are answering different questions. Forty-eight hours tells you whether the candle burns and smells of the right thing. Fourteen days tells you how loud it will be on your customer's shelf, which is the number you are actually arguing about.

Cure conditions matter as much as cure days in India. Lids on during cure keeps dust out and slows the loss of top notes; a cupboard at 25–30°C is better than a shelf in direct sun at 38°C; and in Mumbai, Kochi or Kolkata in monsoon a sealed carton with the lids on is the difference between a candle that reads well in October and one that has been quietly breathing out its top notes for a fortnight. Re-pouring a batch on day four because it smelled weak. This is the most expensive mistake on this page and we see it constantly before festival season. A 40-jar batch remelted at day four costs the wick, the labour and part of the fragrance, and you will very often be remelting candles that would have been fine on day 14. Hold three jars back from every batch as a cure reference, score them at day 7, day 14 and day 21, and only remelt after the day-14 read. If you are planning for Diwali on 8 November 2026, a 14–21 day cure plus courier time means the festive pour should be finished by about mid-October.

Where the heat took it: add temperature, stirring and the pour

You can weigh a perfect 10% and still deliver an uneven 8% to half of your jars.

Fragrance oil has to go into solution in the wax, and that happens at temperature and with agitation. Add it too cool and it does not disperse properly — it stays in richer and poorer regions of the melt, and the poorer regions are the ones that end up in some of your jars. Add it too hot, or hold the melt hot for a long time afterwards, and you lose more of the light volatile material than you need to.

Use the grade's own figures. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks you to melt to approximately 80–85°C, add dye at full melt, add fragrance at 80–90°C and stir slowly for two full minutes, then pour at 75–80°C. The Eco Soy CSI 400 page asks for fragrance at 85°C within a range of 80–90°C, a gentle two-minute stir, then a direct pour. The Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 page gives 80–90°C as the working range for melting and pouring. Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 is different again, with a melting point of 50–53°C and a pour temperature of 58–60°C — a grade you cannot run on soy habits.

A point worth retiring: flashpoint is not the temperature at which your fragrance burns off. It is a transport and storage safety property. British Rose states a flashpoint of 192°C, Jasmine states 185°C, and Roasted Coffee states approximately 191–193°C. Adding at 80–90°C is a long way below all three. If your throw is weak, the flashpoint is not the reason, and dosing at 60°C to protect the oil is a good way to get a badly dispersed candle instead.

Two process habits are worth building. First, stir with intent but without whipping: slow figure-of-eight passes that reach the bottom corners of the pitcher, for the full two minutes by a clock, not by feel. A CSI Pro Mixer at ₹349.00 is useful for larger melts, at low speed and below the surface. Second, pour promptly once the oil is in. A pitcher standing on the bench for twelve minutes while you fuss with wick stickers is losing top notes and dropping through its pour window at the same time.

When the oil is simply a quiet oil at 10%

Some fragrances are loud. Some are beautiful. The overlap is smaller than the marketing suggests.

This is the least popular answer, so it belongs on a page written by a supplier who sells fragrance oil: after the dose, the cure, the pool and the heat, a fraction of weak-throw cases are simply an oil that does not project strongly in soy at any allowed load. That is not a defect. Projection depends on the volatility of the materials in the blend, and a composition built around soft musks, heavy resins and creamy base notes is chemically committed to being close-range.

CSI's own pages tell you a surprising amount if you read them as specifications rather than as descriptions. Pages that describe an oil as strong-rated or as delivering strong cold and hot throw — Lavender, Jasmine, Roasted Coffee — are telling you the blend was built for it. A page describing an oil as medium to strong, as the Autumn page does, is telling you something different. And an oil written up for perfumery — Solar Bloom's page positions it as best formulated as an eau de parfum at 18–22% with moderate projection — is a fine oil that was never composed to fill a drawing room from a 200 g jar. One of the reviews on this page is a maker reporting exactly that, in a diffuser rather than a candle. We would rather point at it than pretend it does not happen.

The way to settle it in your own workshop is a reference oil. Pick one oil whose page states strong throw, buy it in a size you will finish, and pour one jar of it in every diagnostic round — same wax, same wick, same jar, same cure. British Rose works well as a reference because it is inexpensive at ₹3,068.00 for 1 kg, states a flashpoint of 192°C and states 0% vanillin, so it will not yellow a white wax and confuse a second variable into your test. If your problem oil is quiet and the reference is loud in the same jar on the same day, you have your answer and it is not the wax.

A ceiling tells you what the wax can hold. It never told you what the room will hear.

The four-jar round that settles this in sixteen days

One pour day, four jars, one variable each, and a scoring sheet you fill in twice.

Do not change four things and hope. Pour four jars on the same afternoon, from the same wax, into the same containers, and change exactly one thing in each. Materials for the round — 800 g of Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464, 80 g of British Rose at 10% and four Eco Candle Wicks — come to ₹674.96, or ₹168.74 a jar. That is less than most makers spend on a single panicked wax change.

Day 0 — pour the control, and weigh everything backJar A is your current recipe, poured exactly as you normally pour it, but weighed to 0.1 g and recorded: wax grams, oil grams, add temperature, stir time by a clock, pour temperature, room temperature. Weigh the finished jar and subtract the empty jar and wick so you have a true poured weight. This jar exists to prove that your recipe is what you think it is, and it is the yardstick every other jar is scored against.

Day 0 — pour the three single-variable jarsJar B is the control recipe with one step up the wick ladder — C1 to C2, or a wider wick within the same family. Jar C is the control recipe with your oil replaced, gram for gram, by the reference oil at the same 10%. Jar D is the control recipe with the process corrected: fragrance added at 80–90°C, stirred slowly for two full minutes, poured promptly. Nothing else moves. Same jars, same fill height, same bench, same evening.

Day 3 — read the pools, not the smellBurn all four for three hours in the same still room, one at a time or well separated, fan off and door shut. Measure each melt pool with a ruler at three hours and photograph it. Note soot, mushrooming and pool depth. This visit answers the wick question only; ignore how they smell, because on day three they are all lying to you.

Day 14 and day 21 — score the throw, then decideBurn each jar for three hours in a closed room of roughly the same size, with a rested nose and at least an hour between jars, and score the throw from 0 to 3 at one, two and three hours — nine points per jar. Repeat at day 21 for anything heavy or woody. A jar that beats the control by two or more points on both readings has found your cause. A one-point gap is a tie, and a tie means keep the cheaper option.
Measure the pool with a ruler and the oil with a 0.1 g scale, and two-thirds of weak-throw mysteries stop being mysteries.

Scoring all four jars in one evening, one after another. Your nose adapts within minutes and the fourth candle will always seem weaker than the first. Score one jar per session with at least an hour between, or have someone else light them in an order you do not know. It costs nothing and it is the difference between a test result and a mood.

What each answer costs — and what a wrong guess costs

The order to test in is not the order that feels urgent. It is the order that is cheap to be wrong about.

The dose lever feels like the expensive one because oil is the expensive ingredient, and it is: on a 200 g jar of CSI 464 the wax is ₹101.48 and 20 g of Lavender at 10% is ₹104.42. The oil costs slightly more than the wax it is dissolved in. Which is exactly why it is worth knowing whether the extra two points are buying anything: dropping from 10% to 8% on Lavender saves ₹20.88 a candle, or ₹2,088.40 across 100 candles, and in a jar whose pool never reaches the glass it will cost you almost nothing in throw.

Set that against the cost of guessing. A 100-jar festive batch poured at a dose you have not verified, cured for three days, wicked by habit and then remelted because it smelled weak, costs the full wax again at ₹101.48 a jar, a new wick at ₹5.90, whatever fragrance is lost in the remelt, and two working days you did not have in the last week of October. The four-jar round is ₹674.96 and sixteen days. Run it in September and you never have that conversation with yourself in November.

IF YOU ONLY DO ONE THING
Hold three jars back from your next batch, cure them properly with lids on in a cupboard at room temperature, and burn one on day 7, one on day 14 and one on day 21 in the same closed room. It costs three jars of stock and nothing else. In general practice it resolves more weak-throw complaints than any product change on this page — which is an uncomfortable thing for a supplier to write, and still the most useful line on it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I go above 10% fragrance oil in Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464?
The CSI 464 page states a load of up to 10% of total wax weight, so 10% is the figure to work to. If you need more dose headroom, the grade has to change: Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 both state up to 13%. Check your oil's page as well — many CSI oils state 6–10% for soy, and where the wax page and the oil page disagree the lower figure governs.
Is 10% of the wax the same as 10% of the candle?
No, and the gap matters. Ten per cent of wax weight on a 200 g jar is 20 g of oil in a 220 g pour. Ten per cent of the finished candle is 22.2 g, which is 11.1% of the wax — above CSI 464's stated maximum. CSI product pages state loads as a percentage of total wax weight, so use wax weight.
How long should I wait before deciding my 10% candle has weak hot throw?
At least 14 days for most fragrance families, and 21 days for woody, amber and heavy vanilla blends. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for a minimum of 48 hours and says ideally 1–2 weeks before burn testing. A 48-hour read tells you the candle works; a 14-day read tells you how loud it will be for the customer.
Will a bigger wick fix weak hot throw at 10%?
It often will, because throw comes off the liquid pool. A 50 mm pool in a 70 mm jar is 19.63 cm² against a full 38.48 cm² — roughly 51% of the surface. Step up one size at a time with Eco Candle Wicks (C1 ₹5.90, C2 ₹9.44 each in 100-packs) and stop at a full pool by hour three or four. A wick that runs the pool too hot soots, mushrooms and shortens burn time without adding throw.
Does adding fragrance oil at a lower temperature protect the scent?
No — it usually harms it. Oil added to wax that has cooled towards the pour window disperses unevenly and some of it never goes into solution. Flashpoint is a transport and storage property, not a burn-off point: British Rose states 192°C, Jasmine 185°C and Roasted Coffee approximately 191–193°C, all far above the 80–90°C the wax pages ask for.
Could the fragrance oil itself just be a weak performer in soy?
Yes, and it is worth ruling in rather than dancing around. Some blends are built on soft musks and heavy bases and stay close to the candle at any allowed load, and some CSI oils are written up for perfumery rather than candles — Solar Bloom's page positions it as best at 18–22% as an eau de parfum. Pour one jar of a reference oil whose page states strong throw, in the same wax, wick, jar and cure, and compare on day 14.
