Every consumable, pack by pack

A consumable is anything that leaves your workshop inside, on or around a candle and has to be bought again. Wax and fragrance oil are the obvious ones and get planned carefully, because they are expensive. The small consumables get planned badly for the opposite reason: they are cheap, so nobody tracks them, and then a production day stops because the last wick sticker went on jar 38 of 54. The table below lists every consumable a CSI container or tealight line draws on, every listed pack, and the per-unit price at the smallest and largest pack — which is where you can see at a glance whether buying bigger changes anything.

Read the right-hand column and a pattern appears. The consumables that go into every candle — wicks and wick stickers — are flat-priced. The ones where scale genuinely saves are either used per batch (stirring sticks), per metre (tape), or come in very different pack ladders (tealight cups, jars below 50). So the wholesale question for consumables is not "what is the biggest pack?" but "which three or four items are worth buying ahead, and which should simply be bought with each batch?"

The costed 100-candle basket

Here is every consumable for 100 soy container candles at the series standard of 200 g at an 8% fragrance load — 184 g of wax and 16 g of oil each — with the listed packs you would actually buy. The table separates two numbers that are easy to confuse: what the 100 candles use (the cost that belongs on your per-candle costing sheet) and what you pay today (the cash that leaves your account, including stock left over for the next run).

The gap between the two totals is ₹1,192.24, and it is not waste: it is 1.6 kg of wax (₹811.84) that doubles as your spill-and-top-up allowance, 20 wick stickers (₹50) and 400 care labels (₹330.40) waiting for the next run. That is the single most useful thing to understand about consumables at the 100-candle stage. Your costing sheet should use the right-hand column; your cash plan should use the left. Now the view the hero number is built on. Take the wax, oil and jar out, and what remains — wick, sticker, label and a share of the stirring sticks — is ₹13.95 per candle, about 7.5% of materials. 100, 500 or 1,000 candles: what changes per candle

The next table runs the small consumables and jars through three production volumes using only listed packs. The "cash per candle" column is what you actually spend divided by the candles you make, so it includes leftovers. That is the number that tells you whether ordering for more candles really saves money.

The conclusion is clear. Going from 100 to 1,000 candles saves about ₹3.93 of cash per candle on the three small consumables, and almost all of that is the care-label roll being used up instead of sitting in a drawer. The real per-candle cost falls by 13 paise, from ₹12.77 to ₹12.64, and only because the 1,000 roll is cheaper per label. Jars and wicks do not move at all at these volumes on listed prices. Above them — 500 or 1,000 jars at a time, recurring monthly wick orders — the listed per-unit price is the ceiling and the quote happens on WhatsApp.

Reorder points that prevent stock-outs

A consumable stock-out almost never happens because a business cannot afford the item. It happens because nobody owned the count. The five steps below take an hour to set up and a minute a week to run, and they tie every small consumable to the batch plan so it is reordered alongside the wax.

Packaging consumables per shipped candle

For a business that ships — to online customers, stockists or corporate gifting orders — packaging is a second consumables list with its own per-unit maths. CSI lists several packaging items; their product titles state sizes and pack counts, and those are the only figures used here. Tape and bubble wrap depend on how you pack, so they are costed per metre or left for you to measure.

Put that beside the candle and it reframes the consumables question. A shipped 200 g candle carries ₹186.84 of candle materials and at least ₹30.68 of packaging — so the box and paper alone cost more than twice the wick, sticker and label combined. For a direct-to-customer business, packaging consumables deserve the same reorder trigger as wicks. For a business selling to stockists in cartons, the per-candle packaging cost may be much lower, which is one reason the two channels should be costed separately.

One basket, one invoice

Consumables are where multi-supplier buying hurts most. Wax from one supplier, wicks from a second, jars from a third and stickers from a marketplace means four deliveries arriving on four different days, and a batch that can only be poured when the last one lands.
