The break-even volume: when each pack size becomes the right buy

A discount you cannot consume is not a discount. The break-even for a pack size is not "when the saving exceeds zero" — it is when you will use the pack inside a window short enough that the cash and the shelf life are both safe. Where bulk actually saves money — and where it barely moves

Two findings are worth saying out loud. First: consumables that are measured out in grams — fragrance oil, dye, mica — have steep ladders, because you are paying for packaging and handling on the small sizes and almost none of it on the large. Second: things that are already commodity-priced per unit — cotton wicks, most soy wax — have no ladder at all, because there is nothing left to strip out. Here is the case worked in full, because "don't over-buy" is worthless advice without a number attached. Take a maker doing 50 candles a month across four scents — a real, common Indian small-brand shape. Two purchase plans, same products, same rates card.

The entire benefit of committing a year of cash is one modest step on one product line, and you buy that step by owning ten kilograms of four specific smells.

Now the risks, which are not hypothetical:

There is one legitimate exception, and it is seasonal. If you have a confirmed festive order — a corporate gifting PO, a retailer's Diwali buy — then buying the whole quantity in one go is correct, because the demand is contracted rather than forecast. That is not "stocking up". That is buying against an order, and it is the one situation where the largest pack size and the longest horizon are both right. What "wholesale" has to mean beyond the price

Price is the part of wholesale that is easy to compare, which is why it gets all the attention and why it is a poor basis for choosing a supplier. Once you are past a hundred candles a month, four things decide whether a supplier is usable, and only one of them is on the price list.

Take batch consistency seriously, because it is the requirement makers discover last and pay for hardest. Suppose you save ₹20 per kilogram by moving to a cheaper wax source. On 184 g per candle that is ₹3.68 a candle, and across 600 candles a year it is ₹2,208. Now suppose the second batch behaves slightly differently — a marginally different set point, a different frosting pattern, a slightly different cure. You re-run three wick tests across two jar sizes, you lose a week of pouring, and you either ship candles that burn differently from last month's or you scrap them. One bad batch costs more than a year of that ₹20/kg saving. Consistency is not a soft benefit; it is the thing that makes your recipe an asset rather than a lucky result.

This is also the practical argument for consolidating your basket with one supplier rather than chasing the best price per line across five.
