Why Does My Soy Candle Crack After Cooling?

Is a cracked soy candle safe to burn? A hairline crack in the surface skin is cosmetic and vanishes with the first melt pool. Two cases are not: a deep crack over a cavity, where the flame can drop into the void, and any crack in the glass itself, which should never be sold or lit.
What pouring temperature stops soy cracking? The lower end of your grade's published range, into a jar at room temperature. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks pours at 75–80°C; CSI 468 at 58–60°C; CSI 464's page gives 80–90°C as the working range for melting and pouring.
Can I fix a cracked candle without remelting it? Usually. A heat gun reflows a skin crack in about a minute a jar at no material cost, and a 20 g top-up pour at ₹10.15 a jar fills a dished centre. A full remelt — about ₹8.44 a jar in new wicks and wax loss — is only needed for cavities you cannot reach and for seized fragrance.
What a crack in soy wax actually is
Liquid soy occupies more space than solid soy. As a jar sets, the wax contracts, and it has to take that contraction out of something — the space under the surface, the bond with the glass, or the wax itself. In a slow, even cool-down the contraction is absorbed gently across the whole candle and you see nothing more than a faintly dished top. In a fast cool-down the outside freezes into a rigid shell while the inside is still liquid and still shrinking, and now the contraction is happening underneath something that cannot move. Something must give. Either the wax tears, which is a crack, or the wax lets go of the glass, which is a pull-away.
That is the whole mechanism, and the diagram above is the whole timeline. It also explains why cracks are so strongly seasonal and so strongly linked to air conditioning: the faster the outside of a candle freezes relative to the inside, the more likely the tear. Nothing about the wax has gone wrong. Soy has done exactly what soy does, at a rate you chose without realising you were choosing it.

The distinction matters commercially as well as technically. A crack that is only in the skin can be reflowed in about a minute a jar. A crack that runs into a void is a candle with a hollow around the wick, and that is a candle you should not ship, because the flame reaches the void, the pool behaves unpredictably and the customer will tell you about it. Get a torch, look in, and let the depth decide.
Wax cracks and glass cracks are not the same emergency
Glass cracks come from thermal shock: one part of the glass expands faster than the part next to it, and the stress exceeds what the glass can take. In candle making the classic case is hot wax into a jar that is significantly colder — straight out of an air-conditioned storeroom, or a Delhi cupboard in January — and the second most common is a heat gun held still against one spot while warming a jar. Ceramic and thick apothecary glass are more forgiving than thin, lightweight glass; borosilicate is the most forgiving of all, which is why the Borosilicate Glass Jar at ₹200.00 for a 500–600 g fill is described on its page as heat-resistant.
Two published figures are worth putting side by side here, because they are the only hard numbers most makers have to work with. The Clear Glass Jar with Golden Lid page states the jar is hot-pour safe to 85°C. The Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 page gives 80–90°C as the working range for melting and pouring. Those two ranges overlap at the top, which means pouring CSI 464 at the hottest end of its range into that jar takes you to the edge of what the jar is rated for. The practical answer is not complicated: pour at the lower end, let the wax settle in the pitcher, and check it with a Pen Thermometer at ₹354.00 rather than by eye.

Five causes of cracking, in the order they usually apply
1 · Cooling too fast, usually in an air-conditioned room
An 18–22°C room is the single most reliable way to crack a soy top in India, and it is exactly where a lot of studios and spare bedrooms are in May. Pour the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks at its page range of 75–80°C into a 20°C room and the wax must shed 55 to 60 degrees; in a still 30°C room the same pour sheds 45 to 50. The shell sets earlier in the cold room, the interior keeps shrinking under it, and the shell splits. Add a fan and it is faster still.
2 · Cold surfaces under the jars
A granite or marble counter is a heat sink. It pulls warmth out of the base of the jar far faster than air pulls it off the top, which sets the bottom and the walls first and leaves the last liquid wax stranded in the middle at the top — exactly the geometry that produces a deep crack and a hollow. Stand the tray on wood, thick cardboard or a folded towel. It is free, and in a Delhi or Jaipur winter it is the single most effective change most makers can make.
3 · Deep pours and big jars
Volume is against you. A 600 g fill in a Borosilicate Glass Jar holds three times the wax of the 200 g unit this page has been costing — ₹304.44 of CSI 464 in a single container — and the middle of that mass is a long way from any surface. It stays liquid for hours after the shell has set, and everything it shrinks by has to come out of the shell. Big jars want lower pour temperatures, slower cooling and, very often, a deliberate second pour to fill what the first one left behind. A 20 g top-up is ₹10.15 in CSI 464.
4 · Hard waxes blended into a container soy
This is the cause that surprises people, because the blend was usually added for a good reason. Beeswax hardens a candle; microcrystalline hardens it further — the Microcrystalline Wax Slab page lists 1–5% for hardening blends. A harder, more brittle candle body is exactly what cracks under shrinkage stress. So is a pillar wax poured into glass: Soy Pillar Wax is formulated to shrink and release from a mould, which is what a mould wax must do, and putting it in a jar guarantees both cracking and pull-away.

5 · The heat-and-cool cycle after the candle leaves you
Cracks that were not there when you packed the box are real and they are not your pour temperature. A candle that sits in a courier van at 45°C in the afternoon, softens at the top, and is then delivered into a 22°C air-conditioned office has been through a small remelt and a fast re-set with a lid on. That cycle produces exactly the surface tension that splits a skin. It is also why festive orders posted in the last week of October behave differently from the same candles handed over at a stall.
The controlled cool-down, in four steps
This is general container-candle practice rather than a CSI protocol, and it applies to any soy grade. The aim of all four steps is the same: keep the difference between the outside and the inside of the candle as small as possible for the first two hours.
Repair: what can be saved, and what cannot
Work out first whether the crack has depth. Shine a torch across the top: a line that throws no shadow and shows no darkness beneath it is a skin split, and a skin split is a one-minute job. A crack you can see into, or one that sounds hollow when you tap the glass beside it, is a structural fault with a void underneath, and the only honest repairs are a top-up pour that genuinely fills the void or a full remelt.

Indian rooms, Indian couriers, Indian seasons
A Kochi maker pouring in July and a Delhi maker pouring in January are running different processes with the same recipe. The Kochi room is at 28°C, still and humid; the Delhi room is at 11°C with a cold stone floor and dry air. The wax has not changed. The rate at which it is being asked to give up 45 or 65 degrees has, and the Delhi candles will crack while the Kochi ones do not.

That last row is the reason this page keeps returning to dates. Diwali 2026 falls on 8 November 2026. Soy container candles want a 14–21 day cure — the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks for at least 48 hours and ideally one to two weeks, and 14–21 days by family is standard practice — and then they need courier time on top. A batch poured in mid-October can be inspected, reflowed or remelted and still arrive. The same batch poured on the last weekend of October cannot, which converts a ₹506.22 material problem into a lost order.
What a cracked corporate order actually costs
Sixty 200 g candles in CSI 464 with Apple Cinnamon at 8%, an Eco C1 wick and a clear glass jar are ₹277.68 each — ₹101.48 of wax, ₹75.90 of oil, ₹5.90 of wick and ₹94.40 of jar — and ₹16,660.66 for the order. Against that, the fixes are almost embarrassingly cheap.

Two honest observations to finish on. The first is that the cheapest line in that table — cooling slowly and changing nothing — is also the correct one for most cracked batches we are sent photographs of. A wax upgrade to CSI 468 at ₹1,711.20 across sixty jars is a real improvement for makers who genuinely cannot control their room, because a 58–60°C pour has far less distance to fall than an 80°C one. For a maker who can simply switch the air conditioning off for two hours, it is money spent on a problem that a switch solves.
The second is about delivery charges, because one of the reviews in the strip above raises them and it would be dishonest to skip past it. If you are ordering wax repeatedly in 1 kg lots to fix a recurring problem, the freight adds up faster than the wax does. Diagnose the crack once, order in 5 kg or 10 kg — ₹2,537.00 and ₹5,074.00 for CSI 464 — and ask on WhatsApp about bulk pricing and GST invoicing before you place a third small order in a month.
