Why Is My Soy Candle Oily on Top?

What is the difference between an oily film and a sweating candle? A film is an even, wet sheen across the whole surface that lifts onto a tissue as a smear; it usually points at the recipe. Beads are separate droplets with dry wax between them, most often after a warm spell. Blot the top with a tissue and look at the mark — one smear or a pattern of dots — before you change anything.
How much oil is too much for soy wax? Use the lower of the wax page ceiling and the oil page range. On a 200 g candle, 10% of wax weight is 20 g and 13% is 26 g. Dosing a 10% wax at 13% buys 6 g of oil the formulation was not built to hold — ₹18.41 with British Rose at 1 kg pricing, or ₹920.40 across fifty jars.
Can I just wipe the oil off and sell the candle? Wiping removes today's film, not its cause, and the film usually returns. Blot it, then weigh the next batch properly: the oil that separates is oil you paid for and cannot smell in the finished candle. If load, temperature and oil all check out, the cause is storage heat and the fix is where the stock sits, not the recipe.
Film or beads: name it before you fix it
An oily film is an even, wet-looking sheen over the whole top of a cured candle. Tilt the jar under a light and the surface reflects like a puddle rather than like wax. Press a folded tissue flat onto it and lift: you get one broad, translucent smear. A film usually means the recipe is carrying more fragrance than the wax holds in solution, or that the oil never went into solution properly in the first place.
Beads are separate droplets standing proud of a surface that is dry between them, like condensation on a cold glass. The tissue lifts a pattern of dots rather than a smear. Beads most often follow a warm spell — a week of 38°C afternoons, a courier van, a shop window — and they can appear on a candle whose recipe is perfectly sound. Two more things get mistaken for oil and are not. A frosted top is dry, white and dusty — it looks matte, not wet, and a tissue lifts nothing. A hot-air-smoothed top can look glassy and wet for days without any oil at all, because you have re-melted and re-set a thin layer; again, the tissue is the referee. Do the tissue test on a candle that has been at a stable room temperature for at least an hour, not one that has just come out of a warm car.

Cause one: more oil than the wax was formulated to hold
A container wax is formulated to carry fragrance in solution up to a certain proportion of its own weight. Below that figure, the oil stays bound into the set wax and comes out as vapour when the candle burns. Above it, the surplus has nowhere to live: it migrates to the surface, or to the glass, or into the gaps between crystals, and you see it. These are the wax manufacturer's stated formulation maximums, quoted on each product page — not rules anyone imposes on you, and not a target to aim at either.
The numbers are easy to check and this is the first thing to do, because it takes a minute and it is the most common single cause. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 states up to 10% of total wax weight. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks and Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 state up to 13%, and the Chunks page adds that 13% should be burn-tested thoroughly, with 8% as a starting point and 10% as its recommendation. Eco Soy CSI 400 does not publish a ceiling at all — we will not guess one for you; ask on WhatsApp.

The 8% that was really 11%: which weight your percentage is of
Two makers can both say they pour at 10% and put different amounts of oil in the jar, because there are two conventions in circulation. CSI product pages state loads as a percentage of total wax weight — 10% of 200 g of wax is 20 g of oil, and the finished candle weighs 220 g. The other convention is a percentage of the finished candle: 10% of a 222 g candle is 22.2 g of oil poured into 200 g of wax, which is 11.1% by the first convention and over a 10% wax's stated ceiling.
That gap is small enough to be invisible on a recipe card and large enough to put a candle over the line. In money it is ₹6.82 a jar with British Rose — ₹340.89 across fifty — spent on oil that your wax was not formulated to carry. The fix costs nothing: write the convention next to the number on every recipe card, in grams as well as percentages. 200 g wax + 20 g oil = 10% of wax weight cannot be misread six months later; 10% load can.
Cause two: the oil went in at the wrong temperature
A load inside the ceiling can still end up on the surface if the fragrance never dissolved properly. Oil added to wax that has already begun to thicken sits as fine droplets rather than going into solution, and those droplets are pushed ahead of the growing crystals as the candle sets — which delivers them, eventually, to the surface. The pattern is often a sheen concentrated near the wick, where the wax stayed liquid longest, rather than an even film.
The product pages are specific about this, and it is worth following them rather than a habit. The Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page asks you to melt to approximately 80–85°C, add dye at full melt, then add fragrance at 80–90°C and stir slowly for two full minutes before pouring at 75–80°C. Eco Soy CSI 400 asks for fragrance at 85°C within the same 80–90°C band, a gentle two-minute stir and a direct pour. The Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 page gives 80–90°C as the working range for melting and pouring. Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 sits much lower, with a melting point of 50–53°C and a pour temperature of 58–60°C, so the same habit copied across grades is a mistake in both directions.
Two related worries can be set aside. Adding oil at 80–90°C does not burn the fragrance away: flashpoints on CSI oil pages sit far above that — British Rose lists 192°C, Sandalwood 203°C — and flashpoint is a transport and safety property, not the temperature at which scent evaporates. And the stir matters as much as the temperature: two slow minutes moves wax through the whole vessel, while ten seconds of vigorous whisking mostly makes bubbles. Slow, full-depth, timed.
Causes three and four: the oil itself, and the shelf it sits on
Fragrance oils are blends, and they do not all behave the same way in the same wax. That is why oil pages carry their own usage ranges alongside the wax's ceiling — Citrus Lemon states 6–10% for candles, Dark Vanilla states 6–10% for soy, Sandalwood states up to 10% for soy. Where the wax ceiling and the oil range differ, the lower figure governs. A 13% wax does not turn a 10% oil into a 13% oil. If one fragrance films while four others in the same wax, wick and jar do not, you have found your answer without changing anything else.
Heat is the fourth cause and the one most often missed in India, because it happens after the candle leaves you. Fragrance held in solution at 26°C is not necessarily held at 40°C. A jar that sat in a delivery van across Rajasthan in June, or on a shelf above a shop's display lighting, or in a first-floor room under a concrete roof in Chennai, can develop a surface sheen with nothing wrong in its recipe at all. The tell is that your held-back jars in a cupboard are dry while the shipped ones are not.
The honest fixes for heat are unglamorous and cheap: store and ship stock in closed boxes rather than clear display packs, keep it off west-facing walls and away from lighting, avoid stacking pallets against a hot wall, and choose a harder grade for summer lines rather than pushing the load up to compensate for a weak throw. If you want to try an additive, the Vybar Additive page says it improves fragrance retention and reduces mottling and sweating at 0.5–2% of wax weight, lower end for soy, added to melted wax before fragrance and colour — at 1% of a 200 g candle that is 2 g, or ₹6.24. Test it against an unchanged control and do not use it to hold up a load that is over the ceiling; grades such as Eco Soy CSI 400 are sold as needing no additives at all.
The blot, weigh and re-pour protocol
Four steps, one variable at a time, and no new materials until the arithmetic has been checked. Most makers who work through this find the answer at step two and never buy anything at all.
What the fix costs, and what the overload costs
Almost every correction on this page saves money rather than spending it, which is the opposite of how most troubleshooting works. That is worth saying plainly from a supplier: the oil is the expensive part of a soy candle, and dosing it correctly is both the fix and the saving.

One more honest note, since it costs us a sale. If your candles film only in May and June and are dry the rest of the year, you do not have a recipe problem and you should not buy a different wax. You have a storage and logistics problem, and the answers are closed boxes, shaded shelves, shorter stock cycles through the hot months and a clear line on the care card. Send photographs of the tissue test on WhatsApp before you change anything — it is free, and it is faster than a re-pour.
