How we chose these. This is not a sales ranking and there are no sponsored placements. We picked oils that cover the main scent families, that work in soy, paraffin and blended waxes, and that have their technical details stated on the product page, so you know what you are buying before it arrives. Where a detail such as flashpoint or vanillin content is not stated for an oil, we say so rather than guess. The best oil for you is still the one that passes your own burn test, in your wax, with your wick and your jar.

How much oil do you actually need?

The question we are asked most, and the one that decides whether a first batch works.

The arithmetic

Multiply your wax weight by the fragrance load. A 200g soy candle at 8% needs 200 × 0.08 = 16g of fragrance oil. A 15g trial bottle is therefore roughly one candle of about 185g at 8%.

Start in the middle of the stated range, not at the top. More oil than the wax can hold can sweat out of the candle and does not reliably make it smell stronger. Our free candle calculators do the sums for a full batch.

Why it smells weak on day one

A freshly poured candle has not finished curing. Soy usually needs 48 to 72 hours, and paraffin 24 to 48 hours, before the throw settles. Citrus and other bright top notes benefit most from waiting.

If a fully cured candle still throws weakly, check the wick size and jar diameter before adding more fragrance. A wick that is too small will not build a wide enough melt pool to release the scent.

White wax, vanillin and soap

The three things that most often surprise a new maker after the oil has arrived.

Vanillin and colour

Oils containing vanillin, which is common in vanilla, caramel, coffee and amber scents, gradually turn white wax yellow or beige. It does not affect how the candle burns or smells.

Of the ten above, Dark Vanilla and Roasted Coffee contain vanillin. Sandalwood, British Rose and Blue Ocean are listed at 0%. For any other oil, check the product page or test a small pour and leave it for a few weeks.

Soap is a separate test

A good candle oil is not automatically a good cold-process soap oil. Lavender is known to accelerate trace, which means the batter thickens fast, so have your mould ready. Gilli Mitti should be tested in a small batch first.

If soap is not listed on an oil's product page, treat it as untested for soap and message us before making a full batch.

Handling and safety. Fragrance oils are concentrated. Wear gloves, work in a ventilated space, wipe up spills straight away and keep bottles sealed, upright and out of the reach of children and pets. Never heat fragrance oil on its own or over a direct flame; add it to melted wax at the temperature your wax recommends. Flashpoint is a handling and storage figure, not the temperature at which to add the oil. For skin products, use each oil only within the IFRA limits for that product category and check the product page or ask us for the relevant documentation. Burn-test every new combination of wax, wick, jar and fragrance before you sell it, and include the usual candle safety warnings on your labels. We make no therapeutic, medical or psychological claim for any fragrance oil - nothing here suggests a scent improves sleep, mood, focus or health. Fragrance load, cure times and throw vary with wax, wick, vessel and room, so no figure stated here is a guarantee. Prices, stock and sizes change, and the product page governs at the moment you buy.

Not sure which oil to start with?

Tell us your wax, your jar size, whether the candles are white or coloured, and whether you also make soap. We will suggest two oils and a starting fragrance load, with reasons.
