CSI Wedding Orders · Development Time
Custom fragrance, custom colour and custom packaging are three projects with one chain you cannot overlap. Find that chain, add a buffer, and quote it as days from the advance.
32 days
development to quote for the worked 600-candle order: 28-day critical path + 4-day buffer · CSI live pricing, October 2026
Quick answers — read this first
Custom fragrance, custom colour and custom packaging: how much extra time? In the worked 600-candle plan, development takes 28 days on the critical path plus a 4-day buffer: quote 32 development days before production starts. Order to delivery becomes 49 days, against 22 for a proven formula in stock packaging: 27 days extra.

Why not just add up each element? Because they can overlap. Run in series, the same tasks take 58 days. In parallel, packaging artwork starts on day 0 and finishes with float; what cannot overlap is colour, because a colour can only be approved in wax carrying the approved fragrance.

What is the critical path? Sample oils → load ladder → cure → burn test → client fragrance decision (day 18) → final shades poured in that blend → cure → client colour decision (day 27) → golden sample (day 28). Every extra fragrance round adds 13 days; every extra colour round adds 9.

How do I quote it? As days from the advance and from dated client decisions, not as a fixed calendar date: "delivery 49 days after the advance, provided the fragrance is chosen by day 18 and the colour by day 27; each extra round moves the date". From an order on Wednesday 7 October 2026, that is Wednesday 25 November 2026.
The short answer
The tracks: fragrance (18 days to approval), colour (direction by day 9, approval day 27, waits for the oil), wick confirmation (day 26, waits for oil and dye), packaging (day 22, independent if designed in a neutral palette).
The critical path: fragrance → colour in that fragrance → golden sample = 28 days; buffer 4 days (14%); quote 32.
The settling numbers: 32 development days; delivery day 49; 27 days more than a proven-formula order; 13 days per extra fragrance round.
The decision rule: client date ≥ day 49 → accept with dated decision days; between day 40 and 49 → accept only if one custom element becomes a proven one; earlier → renegotiate the date.
Three custom elements, one critical path Worked 600-candle order. Day 0 = order and advance. Durations are labelled worked examples. 0 5 10 15 20 25 30 35 40 45 50 day day 18 fragrance approved day 28 golden sample day 49 delivery Fragrance blend, load oils in cure burn client Colour needs the oil cure client Wick needs oil + dye burn Packaging neutral palette brief, artwork proofs printer, delivery If print colour must match wax artwork printer, delivery Production after the gate buffer pour 11 days cure your work waiting: delivery, cure, printer courier and client decision buffer, or the slow option Critical path: oils → fragrance approval → final colour in that blend → colour approval → golden sample = 28 days. All in series the same tasks take 58 days. Packaging has float unless its colour must match the candle.
The worked order as a calendar. Fragrance and packaging start on day 0; colour can choose a direction early but its final approval must wait for the approved blend; the wick is confirmed on the coloured, scented candle. The golden sample on day 28 closes development, a 4-day buffer follows, and production starts. The dashed packaging row shows what happens if the print colour must match the candle: it finishes on day 38 instead of day 22.
Straight answer
A wedding order requires custom fragrance, custom colour and custom packaging — how much extra development time should I build into production?
Build in the critical path of the development work plus a buffer, not the sum of the three. Fragrance comes first because everything downstream depends on it: in the worked plan the client chooses the fragrance on day 18 after a load ladder, a cure and a burn test. Colour can pick a direction early in unscented wax, but its final approval must be made in wax carrying the approved blend, so it lands on day 27; the wick is confirmed on that coloured, scented candle by day 26; the golden sample is signed on day 28. Packaging artwork runs in parallel from day 0 and, designed in a neutral palette, arrives on day 22 with float to spare. Add a 4-day buffer and quote 32 development days; with production and the tail, delivery is day 49 instead of day 22 for a proven formula. Quote it as days from the advance and from dated client decisions, and state that each extra fragrance round adds 13 days and each extra colour round 9. If the client’s date is earlier, swap one custom element for a proven one or move the date; do not shorten a cure or a burn test.
One line: fragrance first, colour in that fragrance, packaging in parallel: 28 days of development plus 4 of buffer, quoted as 32 days from the advance.

The order and the three custom elements, as numbers

"Custom" is three projects, each with its own clock.

The title gives no figures, so this is a worked example to replace with your own: 600 candles of 200 g in your own jar, at 8% (16 g of oil and 184 g of wax each, load as a share of total weight), plus 12 extras (three client samples, four retains, five QC burn candles) and a 4% loss buffer: 638 pours. You pour 60 candles a day, so production itself is 11 days. The client wants three things nobody has made before: a signature fragrance (you will propose a blend of two CSI white florals), a blush colour matched to their palette, and a printed label and sleeve with their names and date.

The order, restated
Every figure is a labelled worked example · CSI figures only where marked

If you are deciding whether the fragrance must be final before you buy bulk wax and wicks, that is 6345; this post is only about time.

What waits for what

Overlap is free time. Dependencies are where it ends.

Three dependencies decide the calendar. Colour waits for fragrance. Fragrance oils carry their own tint, and some contain vanillin, which commonly yellows or browns wax over time; Gardenia’s page states 0.2% vanillin, Jasmine’s states 0%, and a blend at 8% is part of what the client sees. A blush approved in unscented wax can shift once the blend goes in, so a direction ladder is useful early, but the approval is made in the final blend. The wick waits for both. The approved load and the dye both change how a candle burns, so the wick bracket burns the coloured, scented candle. Packaging waits for almost nothing: the jar and lid sizes (fixed already, because the jar is your standard one) and, unless you design around them, the scent name and the print colour.

Dependencies, and how to cut the ones you can
Practical judgement
Element Depends on Can you cut the dependency?
Fragrance sample oils arriving No; start on day 0 and confirm dispatch
Colour direction dyes arriving Yes: run it in unscented wax in parallel
Colour approval approved fragrance No: oil tint and vanillin affect the shade
Wick approved fragrance and colour No: test the final combination
Packaging artwork jar and lid sizes Yes: fix sizes from your standard jar on day 0
Scent name on print approved fragrance Yes: name it on an in-house sticker instead
Print colour approved candle colour Yes: design a neutral palette that suits any blush
Mistake: asking the client to approve the colour from the unscented direction ladder to save a round. Why it fails: the blend can move the shade, and the client then compares the production candle with a chip that was never made with their fragrance. Fix: use the unscented ladder to choose a direction, then approve the final shade in the approved blend, cured, in daylight.

The four tracks and their day ranges

Each track has a likely range. The plan uses one figure from each and says so.
Day ranges per track · planning judgement, not CSI data
The worked plan uses the figure in bold; your suppliers, printer and client decide the real ones
Track Steps Likely range Worked figure
Fragrance oils arrive, sniff and blend, ladder, cure, burn and throw test, courier, client decision 14–25 days 18
Colour direction ladder (parallel), then final shades in the approved blend, cure, courier, client decision 8–14 days after the fragrance 9 after (day 27)
Wick bracket burn on the coloured, scented candle, several sessions 3–5 days, inside the colour cure 3 (day 26)
Golden sample made from approved materials, signed, one kept by each side 1 day 1 (day 28)
Packaging brief and sizes, artwork, proofs, final proof, printing, delivery 15–30 days, printer-led 22

Fragrance: 18 days, and why the cure cannot be skipped

The sample oils arrive (four days in the plan; we do not publish dispatch or transit times, so confirm on WhatsApp). Round one is eleven candles: each candidate at 6, 8 and 10% (inside both the oils’ stated 10% and the wax’s stated 13%), plus two blend options at 8%. The Jasmine and Gardenia pages both give a 48–72 hour cure for soy before testing; the plan allows four days and then three days of burn sessions, because a hot throw judged on day one judges the wrong candle. Courier and client decision take five more days. The cure-time question under deadline pressure has its own post: can you shorten cure for a corporate order.

Colour: a direction early, an approval late

The dyes arrive with the oils, so a direction ladder (three or four shades in unscented wax) is poured on day 4 and shown to the client by day 9. That narrows the final round to two or three shades poured in the approved blend on day 19. They cure four days before anyone judges them, because soy commonly looks different freshly set than cured, and the client approves in daylight on day 27. The pilot-batch count for a custom colour is 6342.

Packaging: the long track that is rarely the critical one

Printing feels like the risk because it takes longest in one block. But printed labels are only needed when you start packing, which in the plan is day 46. Designed in a neutral palette with the scent name on an in-house sticker, packaging arrives on day 22: 24 days of float. If the print must match the candle’s colour, the final proof cannot be signed until day 27 and packaging arrives on day 38, leaving 8 days. If your printer then takes 18 days instead of 8, it arrives on day 48, 2 days after packing should start. That is the one combination that puts packaging on the critical path.

Critical path, float and buffer

The critical path is the chain where one late day is one late delivery.

Add the chain: oils 4, fragrance work and decision to day 18, final colour pour, cure, courier and decision to day 27, golden sample on day 28. Nothing else is longer: the wick finishes on day 26 (one day of float), packaging on day 22. The same tasks in strict series (each one waiting for the one before) take 58 days; overlapping them saves 30 days without shortening a single cure.

Three ways to run the same development

All tasks in series day 58 day 75 (no buffer) What "add up the three elements" gives

Proven oil from your range, custom colour and print day 19 day 40 The fragrance track disappears
Proven formula, stock packaging — day 22 Bulk materials in 5 days, then production

The buffer, and what it is for

The 4-day buffer (14% of the critical path) covers one slipped courier or one slow client decision. It does not cover a second fragrance round: that adds 13 days because the whole chain after it moves, and a second colour round adds 9. Rather than inflate the buffer to absorb rounds the client may not need, include one round of each in the plan and price extra rounds in days (and money: costing samples and rounds is 6375).

Mistake: using the buffer to cover a client who takes a week to choose between two fragrances. Why it fails: the buffer is gone before production starts, and the next slip lands on the delivery date. Fix: write the decision days into the quote; when the client takes longer, the date moves by the same number of days, and the buffer stays for genuine accidents.
Shorten the path without cutting a test
Start everything on day 0 (the advance unlocks the sample order, not the client’s approval). Send the fragrance samples and the colour direction chips in one courier. Book the client’s decision days in advance. Fix packaging sizes from your standard jar on day 0. And run the wick bracket inside the colour cure, as the plan does, so it costs no extra days.

How to quote development time

A date with no conditions is a promise you do not control.

Half the critical path is the client’s time: two courier legs and two decisions. So quote development as days from the advance, conditional on dated decisions, and turn those into calendar dates for the client. From an order on Wednesday 7 October 2026: fragrance decision due Sunday 25 October 2026 (day 18), colour decision due Tuesday 3 November 2026 (day 27), golden sample signed Wednesday 4 November 2026 (day 28), delivery Wednesday 25 November 2026 (day 49).

1
State the development period"Development: 32 days from receipt of the advance, including one fragrance round and one colour round."
2
List the client’s decision datesFragrance by day 18, colour by day 27, packaging proof by day 12; give the calendar dates.
3
Tie delivery to them"Delivery 49 days from the advance, provided each decision is made by its date; a late decision moves delivery by the same number of days."
4
Price extra rounds in days"Each additional fragrance round adds 13 days; each additional colour round adds 9 days."
5
Name what is not shortenedCure and burn testing are calendar time and are not shortened to recover a late decision.
6
Confirm in writingSend the schedule with the quote and ask the client to confirm it with the advance.

The decision rule, with the settling numbers. The client asks for delivery on day 40 (Monday 16 November 2026). The full custom plan needs day 49, so as it stands the answer is no. Offer two choices in writing: keep all three custom elements and move delivery to Wednesday 25 November 2026; or keep the custom colour and print but use a proven oil from your range, which removes the fragrance track and brings delivery to day 40 (Monday 16 November 2026), exactly the client’s date, with the 4-day buffer still in it. What you do not offer is the full custom plan with a three-day cure.

Commercial protection (practical judgement, not legal advice): development starts when the advance lands, so the advance should at least cover the development materials (₹5,807.40 at CSI prices in the worked plan) and your development time, and any client-specific packaging once the proof is signed. Put the decision dates, the rounds included, the cost of extra rounds and the date consequence in the written order. What the client must approve, and what "approved" means, is 6359; the whole flow from sample approval to delivery, with documents at each gate, is 6360.

What to buy at each gate

Buy reusable things when it suits you, and custom things when they are approved.

The development stage is small money: ₹5,807.40 of CSI materials (five 100 g bottles, two dyes, 4.5 kg of wax, a wick bracket), plus your jars, couriers and hours, for ₹10,497.40 in the worked plan, ₹17.50 a candle across 600. Round one uses 68.8 g of Jasmine, 59.2 g of Gardenia and 48 g of Raat Ki Rani. The 11 colour, wick and golden candles then need another 176 g of whichever blend wins, more than the first bottles have left, so the two shortlisted oils get a second 100 g bottle on day 5, the day the shortlist is made; they arrive long before the day-19 colour pour. The bulk is bought gate by gate.

Argued against our own interest: we would happily sell you 120 kg of wax and 660 wicks on day 0, and the wax at least is reusable stock. But the wicks wait until day 26: if the bracket picks Cotton Braided instead of C2, 660 C2 wicks are stock you did not need. And the oils wait until day 18; a second blend round would change the 60:40 split and the grams of each oil.

Two notes on the oils. Jasmine is cheaper in 500 g packs than in 1 kg (₹1.00 per kilo), so the purchase is 12 × 500 g + 2 × 100 g. Gardenia’s 1 kg costs ₹2.00 more than ten 100 g bottles, so 41 × 100 g + 50 g would be ₹8.00 cheaper than 4 × 1 kg + 100 g + 50 g; we would still buy the kilos, because 42 bottles is more handling and more chances of mixed lots for a trivial saving. Ask us on WhatsApp whether each oil can come from a single lot; if it cannot, compare the lots side by side before mixing them into the order.

This page is for you if a client wants more than one custom element and you need to know how long development takes and how to quote it. Read elsewhere if you need the list of what the client approves (6359), the end-to-end order flow (6360), or the testing sequence for a single new fragrance on a 500-piece order (6341).

Products for the development stage

The three candidate oils, the dyes, the wax and the plain inner box. Nothing here is ranked on performance (CSI publishes no burn or throw data); the oils are chosen on their stated notes, stated loads and stated vanillin, which is what matters for the colour track.

1
fragrance oil · blend component, 60%
Jasmine Fragrance Oil
The page describes it as "sweet, floral, and slightly musky with a timeless luxurious aroma", states "Recommended load up to 10% soy, up to 6% paraffin", and says "0% vanillin - no discolouration" (the page’s claim; test anyway). That last line matters for this post: an oil that leaves the wax near its natural colour lets the colour track start its direction ladder early with less risk of a surprise shift. Two 500 g packs are ₹1.00 cheaper than one 1 kg, so the bulk buy is 12 × 500 g plus two 100 g bottles.

Gardenia Fragrance Oil
The page describes "Rich, creamy, and velvety - a true-to-life gardenia bloom", states "Up to 10% for soy wax candles" and "Vanillin content 0.2% - minimal discoloration risk". Low is not zero: the final colour must still be judged in the approved blend, which is exactly why the colour track waits for day 18. Flat at ₹4.33 a gram from 100 g up, so pack size changes nothing per gram; buy what the grams need.

fragrance oil · the third candidate
Raat Ki Rani (Night-Blooming Jasmine) Fragrance Oil
A third white floral for the shortlist. The page lists "Green Stems, Fresh Ozone" over "Night-Blooming Jasmine, White Florals" and "Soft Amber, Musk", and states "Recommended fragrance load is 6-10% for candles"; the text we captured states no vanillin figure, so colour-test it like any oil. The product address still carries an old "ships-21st-june-2025" note although it is in stock on 7 October 2026; confirm dispatch on WhatsApp. At ₹7.00 a gram for 100 g it is the dearest of the three per gram, which is a fair reason to include it only if the client’s brief points there.

Candle Dye Liquid (Red and Purple)
Two 15 g/ml bottles (₹472.00) cover the direction ladder and the final shades. No CSI dye page states a dosage, so the dose is whatever your approved colour card says; the worked purchase uses 0.5 g per kg of wax purely as an example. Note the listing mixes units ("50 ml" for Red, "50 gm" for Purple): weigh dye on a scale either way. Buy production dye as one bottle after day 27, so the whole order is coloured from one bottle. Repeatable dye formulas are 6343.

wax · reusable, so it can be bought on day 0
Luxury Soy Wax Chunks
The page states "up to 13% fragrance load capacity", above both oils’ stated 10%, so the oils’ ceiling governs the blend and a 6/8/10% ladder sits inside both. Flat per kilo from 1 kg (the 500 g is fractionally cheaper per gram), so the development wax is five 500 g packs (₹2,695.00). Because it is your standard wax, the production 120 kg is not a client-specific risk and can be bought before approvals if you would use it anyway.

CSI does not print custom packaging; your printed label or sleeve comes from your printer, on your printer’s lead time. This plain box protects the candle inside it. The CSI principle
Fragrance first, colour in that fragrance, everything else in parallel.
Quote the critical path plus a buffer, as days from the advance and from dated client decisions, and price extra rounds in days.
"Three custom elements are not three times the work. They are one chain you cannot overlap and two you can."

Why trust this guide

CandleMakingSuppliesIndia sells the oils, dyes, wax, wicks and boxes in this plan and does not sell finished candles or printed packaging. This page still tells you to buy 100 g bottles before kilos, to hold the wick order until the bracket has picked a wick, and to offer the client a proven oil from your range when the date is too close for a custom one.

Every CSI price was checked on the live store on 7 October 2026; every pack offered is in stock on that date. CSI does not publish dispatch or transit times, stock depth or lot continuity, so the four-day sample delivery and the bulk timing are worked examples to confirm on WhatsApp.

The order, durations, decision days, printer lead time, jars, courier, hours, dye dose and calendar are labelled worked examples; prices and page wording are data. This is practical judgement, not legal advice. For bulk pricing, stock and lot confirmation, GST invoicing, and MSDS and IFRA documentation on request, message us on WhatsApp at +91 7397976926.

Frequently asked questions

How long does custom candle development take for a wedding order?
In the worked plan, 28 days of development on the critical path plus a 4-day buffer: 32 days before production. With 11 days of production and the tail, delivery is day 49, against day 22 for a proven formula in stock packaging.
Can I develop the candle colour before the fragrance is final?
You can choose a direction in unscented wax, but approve the final colour only in wax carrying the approved fragrance. Oil tint and vanillin can shift the shade, so an approval made without the oil may not match production.
Should custom candle packaging wait until the candle is finished?
No. Start artwork on day 0 from your standard jar’s sizes and design a neutral palette, with the scent name on a separate sticker. Packaging is only needed at packing, so it usually has float: 24 days in the worked plan.
How much buffer should I add to a candle order timeline?
Enough to cover one slipped courier or one slow decision (4 days, about 14% of the critical path, in the worked plan). Do not use buffer to absorb extra sample rounds; quote those as extra days.
How do I quote delivery time for a custom candle order?
As days from the advance, conditional on dated client decisions, with the extra days each additional round adds. Then translate those days into calendar dates so the client can see the schedule.
What if the client’s wedding date is too close for custom development?
Offer choices in writing: move the date, or replace one custom element with a proven one. Using a proven oil from your range removes the fragrance track and brought the worked delivery from day 49 to day 40. Never shorten a cure or a burn test to fit.
Custom fragrance, colour and packaging
Start the critical path on day 0 and quote it as days from the advance.
For the worked order: fragrance approved day 18, colour day 27, golden sample day 28, 32 development days quoted, delivery day 49. Sample oils and dyes from CSI today; bulk after each approval.
