At What Temperature Should You Add Fragrance Oil to Wax?

Is the add temperature the same as the pour temperature? No, and confusing the two is the most common mistake on this subject. On Luxury Soy Wax Chunks the fragrance goes in at 80–90°C and the wax is poured at 75–80°C. You add, you stir for two minutes, the wax falls, and then you pour.
Does adding fragrance oil above its flash point destroy it? Flash point is a transport, storage and handling property, not the temperature at which fragrance burns away. Even so, stay below the figure your page prints: Gardenia Tuberose publishes 98°C and Neroli publishes 85°C, which sits inside the usual band — add those at the cool end.
What add temperature does CSI publish for coconut soy? None. The Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 page publishes a melting point of 50–53°C and a pour temperature of 58–60°C, but no fragrance addition temperature — that is not published, so ask on WhatsApp rather than borrowing a soy figure.
What CSI's wax pages actually publish, grade by grade
Three CSI soy pages publish something about the moment fragrance goes in. Luxury Soy Wax Chunks is the most complete: melt to approximately 80–85°C, add dye at full melt, add fragrance at 80–90°C and stir slowly for two full minutes, pour at 75–80°C. Eco Soy CSI 400 names a point rather than a range — add fragrance at 85°C, within 80–90°C, stir gently for two minutes, pour directly. Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 gives 80–90°C as the working range for melting and pouring.
The rest do not publish an addition temperature, and we are not going to fill the gap with an estimate. Premium Coconut Soy CSI 468 publishes a melting point of 50–53°C and a pour temperature of 58–60°C, which tells you the add step has to sit above the pour and above the melting point, but the figure itself is not published — ask on WhatsApp. Soy Pillar Wax, Premium Coconut Soy Wax, Natural Soy Pearl Wax and Soy Butter Wax publish neither an addition temperature nor a fragrance ceiling.

Why there is a window at all
Think of sugar in tea. Stir it into hot tea and it disappears — one liquid, evenly sweet everywhere. Stir it into a cup that has gone cold and you get a gritty layer at the bottom and a drink that tastes of nothing until the last mouthful. Fragrance oil in wax behaves similarly: molten wax at 85°C is thin enough for the oil to disperse through it and stay dispersed as the wax sets, so every gram of the finished candle carries the same dose.
That gives the window its two edges. Below it, the wax is thickening and starting to set; the oil has nowhere to go and ends up carried as fine droplets or streaks rather than dissolved, which shows up later as uneven scent, mottling, or oil at the surface. Above it, nothing dramatic happens to the fragrance — flash point is not a burning-off point — but you are holding volatile material at temperature for longer than you need to, and you are closer to whatever ceiling the oil page prints. There is no advantage to going higher, so there is no reason to.
The two-minute stir belongs to the same idea, and the Chunks page states it plainly: add at 80–90°C and stir slowly for two full minutes. Two minutes at temperature is what gets the oil distributed; the technique itself, and what under-stirring does to a batch, is a subject of its own. What matters here is that the clock starts while the wax is still in the window, which is why you add at the top of the fall rather than at the bottom.
The second ceiling: what your oil page says
Flash point is a transport, storage and handling property — the temperature at which a liquid gives off enough vapour to ignite in the presence of a flame. It is not a measure of fragrance strength, it does not rank hot throw, and it is not the temperature at which an oil "burns off" in wax. What it is, for a candle maker, is a ceiling: there is no reason to take a liquid to or past it in an open pot, and several good reasons not to.
Most of the numbers CSI publishes sit far above the add window and can be ignored in practice. Three do not. Gardenia Tuberose publishes 98°C and its page instructs adding below that figure, noting that a standard soy addition temperature is well within the safe range. Palo Santo publishes 93°C. Neroli publishes 85°C — the lowest on the list and inside the 80–90°C band itself, so with Neroli you work at the bottom of the window and check the thermometer before the bottle is opened.

The rule that follows is the same one this series applies to fragrance loads. Where the wax page and the oil page both publish a figure, the lower one governs. A 13% wax ceiling with a 10% oil range means 10%; an 80–90°C wax window with an 85°C oil flash point means the bottom of the window, or lower. That principle costs you nothing and protects you from the only version of this decision that ends in a scrapped pot.
How to actually hit the number
One measurement is worth doing once and never again: time how long your pot takes to fall from 90°C to 80°C. In a 1 kg steel pitcher in an air-conditioned room it can be surprisingly quick; in 5 kg in a melter on a 40°C afternoon in Nagpur it can be several times longer. That number is your real working window, and it decides whether you can weigh, add and stir comfortably or whether you need to prepare everything before the wax comes off the heat.
Tools that make the number repeatable
Two different problems hide here. Knowing the temperature is a measurement problem and costs ₹354.00 to solve. Holding the temperature is a thermal problem, and it is the one that separates a comfortable pour from a rushed one — especially for anyone working in a cold room, a hill station winter or hard air conditioning, where a small pot falls out of the window while the oil is being weighed.

None of this is compulsory. A steel vessel over a pan of water, a ₹354.00 thermometer and a clock will hit 85°C as reliably as any melter, and generations of candles have been made that way — the argument for a melter is time and consistency across repeated batches, not accuracy. Start with the thermometer, work for a month, and let the batches tell you whether you need the rest (double boiler versus electric melter).
Indian workshops: 40°C afternoons, AC rooms and hill-station winters
In a Delhi, Ahmedabad or Nagpur summer, with the room above 40°C, wax falls slowly. The add step is comfortable — you have minutes rather than seconds — but the fall to a 75–80°C pour takes longer than you expect, and the jars then cool slowly too, which changes the surface rather than the scent. Plan the pour around the thermometer, not the clock, and expect a hot-weather batch to occupy the bench longer than a winter one.
The opposite problem is sharper. In an air-conditioned room, a hill-station winter or a January morning in the north, a 1 kg pot can drop out of the window while you are weighing the oil. That is the situation to prepare for in advance: weigh first, keep the vessel covered, warm the beaker, and consider a melter that holds temperature rather than a pot that only loses it. It is one of the most common reasons a maker thinks their oil has weakened when in fact it went in at 68°C.
Monsoon adds a different risk that is not about temperature at all: water. Condensation on a cold beaker, a wet spoon, or steam from a water bath carried into the pot introduces moisture the wax cannot hold, and moisture in the wax makes trouble at the surface later. Dry every tool before it touches the melt, and keep the water bath below a rolling boil.
What the number is worth in rupees
Put a batch on the bench and the arithmetic answers itself. A 5 kg pack of Luxury Soy Wax CSI 464 is ₹2,537.00 and 400 g of Gardenia Tuberose at 8% of wax weight is ₹1,732.80, so one pot holds ₹4,269.80 of materials before wicks, jars or labour — about ₹170.79 a candle across twenty-five 200 g candles. A Pen Thermometer is ₹354.00, or a little over 8% of that single batch, and it is not consumed.
Even at the smallest working scale the answer holds. One kilogramme of CSI 464 with 80 g of Gardenia Tuberose is ₹853.96 of materials; the thermometer costs less than half of it and lasts for years. That is the whole financial case, and it is why this page spends more words on how to measure than on which number to measure to.
The bench card
Melt to the page's melting figure — approximately 80–85°C on Luxury Soy Wax Chunks. Dye at full melt. Off the heat.
Read the middle of the melt. Add the pre-weighed oil at 85°C — at 80–82°C if the oil page prints a flash point of 93°C or 98°C, and at the very bottom of the band for Neroli at 85°C. Stir slowly for two full minutes by the clock.
Fall to the grade's pour figure: 75–80°C on Chunks, 58–60°C on CSI 468. Pour. Record melt, add, stir, pour and room temperature.
When a figure is not published — CSI 468's addition temperature, Soy Pillar Wax's anything, a numeric flash point on most of the 92 oil pages — ask on WhatsApp rather than borrowing a number from a different product. It is a two-minute message and it is the difference between a recipe and a habit.
