Which oils clear that bar at CSI today? Fifteen. They are the oils that publish a measured flash point and list 15 g, 50 g, 100 g, 500 g and 1 kg all in stock — from Citronella at ₹2,891 per kg to Vanilla Bean at ₹7,646. The full table is below.
What does repeatability actually cost? Mostly nothing — it is weighing instead of pouring, and writing instead of remembering. What not doing it costs is measurable: on a 400-candle batch, one percentage point of load drift is ₹2,454.40 to ₹6,116.80 depending on the oil.
Do I need to re-test every new bottle? Not a full qualification — but yes to an incoming check. Keep a sealed retained sample from the bottle you qualified, smell the new bottle blind against it, and pour one control jar before the new bottle enters a customer batch.
What "professional" actually means when you are buying fragrance
A hobby maker who finds a wonderful combination by accident has had a good day. A studio that finds a wonderful combination by accident has a problem, because the next hundred candles have to smell like that one and nobody wrote down how it happened. Everything that separates professional fragrance buying from enthusiastic fragrance buying follows from that single asymmetry: you are buying the ability to repeat, not the sensation of discovery.
Which changes what you look for on a product page. Strength stops being interesting, because strength in the bottle is not strength in a melt pool and no page can promise either. What becomes interesting is anything you can copy into a document and check again later: the stated notes, the stated load percentage for your wax family, the stated vanillin content, the measured flash point where the page has one, the pack ladder, and the reviews that other Indian makers left on that exact listing. Those are facts with dates on them. A phrase like "rich and long-lasting" is not.
The second change is that the decision stops being about the oil alone. A candle's smell is produced by a system — oil, load, wax, wick, vessel diameter, cure, and the room it burns in. Move any element and the output moves. So the professional question is never "is this a good oil?" but "is this a good oil in the one system I have already fixed?"
Third, a professional buys inside a supply reality. An oil that is perfect and only listed in 100 g is a sampling scent, not a production scent — not because it is worse, but because a range built on packs you cannot restock will eventually ship a candle that smells different from the photograph. The pack ladder is part of the specification. So is the honest note that CSI is a supplier, not a manufacturer of fragrance: the store lists the oils, states what the pages state, and supplies documentation on request. The performance verdict is yours to produce and yours to record.
The repeatability screen — and the fifteen oils that clear it
Here is the screen, in three questions. One: does the page publish a measured flash point? Fifty-one of the 107 listed oil pages mention a flash point, but only 18 state an actual measured value; 32 carry only the template line "Flash point > 93°C (suitable for alcohol-based products)", which is a threshold used on perfume-grade listings rather than a measurement of that oil, and 56 pages say nothing at all. Two: is every rung of the pack ladder in stock, so that sampling and production can both happen without a substitution? Three: does the page state a candle load and a discolouration behaviour, so you know what you are committing to before you pour?
Fifteen oils pass all three today. That is not a ranking of quality — it is a ranking of documentation, which is the only thing a supplier can hand you before you make a candle. Sorted by the 1 kg price, with the flash point quoted exactly as the page states it.

Two honest observations. First, the set is dominated by single-note and classic candle scents, because it is the candle-focused listings that publish measured values; the perfume-grade pages carry the threshold line instead. If your brand needs those directions, you have less published specification and more of your own testing to do. Second, seven of these fifteen pages never mention IFRA at all — British Rose, Verbena, Cinnamon, Ylang Ylang, Palo Santo, Neroli and Vanilla Bean. Best-documented on flash point does not mean best-documented on anything else.
Four oils to build a professional spec on
Four scents cover a fresh, a floral, a woody and a gourmand — enough for a small professional range, and each one documented well enough to write a specification from before the first pour. Every card shows every listed pack, the price per 100 g, and roughly how many 200g candles at 8% each pack makes. Note what the 15 g rung produces: ≈0. Fifteen grams is a smelling rung, not a pouring rung — useful for shortlisting, useless for a test jar.

The five places repeatability actually breaks
When a customer says "this one smells different", the cause is almost never the oil. It is one of five things, and four of them are inside your own workshop. The value of knowing the list is that each has a cheap detection method, so you can find the cause in an evening instead of blaming a supplier and reformulating a range.

Notice the ordering. The first four are yours, and they are where almost all drift lives. Only the fifth involves the supplier, and it is the one cause you cannot inspect — which is why its control is a reference sample rather than an argument. No CSI page publishes batch test data, so a dated retained sample is the only genuine comparison either side has, and it costs a sealed 15 g bottle and a label.
Turning a passed test into a specification you can reorder from
A qualification is not finished when the candle smells good. It is finished when a person who was not there can reproduce the candle from a piece of paper. The sequence below takes one scent from a 100 g bottle to a locked production entry, and it is deliberately boring — the point is that it produces the same result in March.
What to ask for — and what no product page will tell you
IFRA — the International Fragrance Association — publishes standards that set maximum use levels for fragrance materials by product category, for consumer safety. The category matters: a level that applies to a leave-on body product is not the level that applies to a candle, because the exposure is different. An IFRA document for a specific fragrance states those levels for that blend, which is why a stockist, a marketplace or a hotel buyer may ask for one. What it does not tell you is anything about throw, strength or how the oil behaves in your wax.
Here is the honest position at CSI. Seventy-one of the 107 oil pages mention IFRA, in at least fifteen different phrasings, and 36 never mention it at all. The Jasmine page, for instance, phrases it as "Use within safe IFRA rates for lotions, body oils, and personal care products"; Citronella says "Follow IFRA guidelines for skin safety". No page anywhere publishes a certificate number, an amendment number, a category number or an assessment date, and no page attaches a document. So the correct professional move is not to read a badge and relax — it is to request the documentation for the specific oils in your specification, via WhatsApp, before the production order goes out. That is CSI's stated practice, and it is how MSDS and GST invoicing are handled too.

And the part no supplier here can supply. No CSI page states a shelf life, an expiry date or a storage temperature, and none publishes lab or third-party test results. Treat storage as your own general good practice — closed, upright, away from heat and direct sunlight, used in rotation — and treat the retained sample as your consistency check. "Not published, ask for the SDS" is a more professional answer to a customer than an invented figure.
Fixing the load fixes the cost
The last reason to write the load down is commercial. Load is the only part of a candle's cost that can move without anyone deciding to move it, and because oil is the expensive ingredient, small drifts are not small money. The table takes the four picks through a 400-candle month — a realistic figure for a working studio — at a fixed 8% and a fixed 10%.

One convention worth stating once. This guide calculates load as a share of the finished candle: a 200g candle at 8% is 184 g of wax plus 16 g of oil. The Cinnamon Vanilla page instead states "Up to 13% of total wax weight", as does the Luxury Soy Wax Chunks page — slightly different grams, which is exactly why a spec should record which convention it uses. A ceiling is a formulation limit on what the wax will hold, not a regulatory limit and not a target.
