Best Oud Fragrance Oils for Candle Making in India

Oud — agarwood — is a base material in every oil here, and every page says so. What separates the oils is the composition built on top: incense and resins on one side, citrus and white florals on the other, vanilla and spice in the middle. Getting this right matters commercially, because the two ends sell to different customers. Bakhoor-style smoke sells to buyers who already burn incense; white oud sells to buyers who want a hotel-lobby candle and find traditional oud too heavy. The table quotes each page's notes exactly as published.

Two oils sit outside the table. Regal Royal Oud is listed with stated notes of "Saffron, subtle spice", "Oud (Agarwood), Cedarwood" and "Sandalwood, Amber, White Musk", but it is sold out in all three sizes, so we name it and leave it at that. CSI also lists two designer-inspired aquatic-woody oils whose stated notes include agarwood; we describe brand-inspired oils by structure rather than by the brand they reference, and neither is an oud-led candle scent. Every pack, price and cost per candle

Oud is the most expensive family CSI stocks, so this table is the one to read twice. Per-candle figures use the price per gram of each oil's largest in-stock pack — the cheapest gram you can currently buy.

Three things worth noticing. Woody Oud's per-gram price is flat from 100 gm upward at ₹4.5312, so the 100 gm bottle buys the same gram as the kilo — there is no listed penalty for staying small on that oil. Lavender Oud's 500 g pack is dearer per gram (₹12.40) than both its 100 g and its 1 kg pack (₹12.00), so if you are buying that oil, buy the 100 g or the kilo, not the middle. And Royal Oud's 100 g pack is currently sold out, which leaves ₹3,300 as the smallest way in — worth knowing before you plan a trial.

The oud oils, judged one by one

Loads, cure and the flash-point blank

Every oud page that states a load stops at 10%. Not one goes higher, and several tell you to begin well below it. That is a signal about the material: these are strong, resin- and wood-heavy compositions where the top of the band is a maximum rather than a target. The stated cures are also longer than a bright oil's — 48–72 hours on Woody Oud and Dark Vanilla Oud, and 72–96 hours on Royal Oud before you even assess the cold throw.

That fourth column is the honest headline of this guide: no oud oil in the CSI range publishes a measured flash point. Across all 107 fragrance-oil pages, eighteen state a measured value — and none of them is an oud. Four ouds carry the shared line "Flash point > 93°C (suitable for alcohol-based products)", which describes suitability for alcohol-based formats and must never be read as a measurement, and the rest are silent. What you do about it is practical: ask CSI for the SDS on WhatsApp, write the figure in your batch record, and until you have it, add fragrance at the bottom of your wax page's stated range rather than the top. Which wax and which jar

Because every oud here stops at 10%, wax choice is not about headroom — all four CSI container waxes can hold these oils. It is about temperature, finish and cost. The table pairs each wax's stated figures with what it gives an oud candle.

For oud specifically, CSI 464 is the sensible default: its stated ceiling of up to 10% is exactly where every oud page stops, so the two documents agree and there is nothing to reconcile. One verified buyer writes of it, "Soy wax quality is the best, which ever products ordered were properly packed and delivered as early as possible". If you want the lowest working temperature in the range — useful when no oil in the family publishes a flash point — CSI 468 states a 58–60°C pour. On the jar side, oud suits dark glass for an obvious reason: several of these oils publish no discolouration statement, and an Amber Shiny Glass Jar with Black Lid at ₹47.20 each (120 gm capacity, pack of 5 ₹236) hides any toning that does appear while matching the positioning.

Pricing an oud candle backwards

Most makers price forward: build the candle, add a margin, hope. With oud that fails, because the oil is the biggest line in the bill of materials. Price backwards instead — start from the shelf price you can defend, then choose the oud that fits inside it. Here is the full materials cost of a 120 g amber-jar candle at 8%: 110.4 g of wax, 9.6 g of oil, one jar, one wick, one sticker.

Read the last two columns together. The same candle, same jar, same wax, same load — and the oud choice alone moves materials from ₹165.23 to ₹236.93, which on a 3× multiple is the difference between a ₹495 candle and a ₹710 candle. That is a positioning decision, not a smell decision. If your market is gifting at ₹499, Woody Oud or Dark Vanilla Oud is the answer and there is no shame in it. If you are selling a ₹1,200 hotel-style candle, the dearer ouds have room — and you should consider the 120 g format rather than 200 g, because it halves the oil while keeping the scent.
